I know some are not going to be a big fan of Fox here, but this is the best I could do on a breaking news story - https://www.foxnews.com/politics/drops-doj-case-against-michael-flynn-in-wake-of-internal-memo-release
How exactly, could anyone not be a big fan of Fox?

Fox is reporting now that Obama was in the middle of the plot to take down Trump, by going at those such as Flynn, in the effort to get them to rat on Trump. Obama was in the meetings and regularly briefed on the status of the scheme to bring down Trump.

That's not a jab at Fox in particular, I'm just not a big fan of watching people on TV make a big spectacle of things. Would much rather take a deeper dive and read the news from WSJ, NY Times, etc. I feel like you remove some portions of the sensational side of talking heads in the typical media.

Different strokes for different folks though, nothing wrong with that.

I would agree with that. For some odd reasons, even a podcast can convey far more information than the likes of television media. And written pages orders of magnitude more.

+1 to that. Podcasts / just reading the news always conveys a lot more information then people sitting on TV and yelling stuff at me for hours.

The thing with a Podcast / Article is that it kinda has to do a somewhat good job in delivering the story that was advertised. When you're watching the news I don't have any control over what stories I'm going to see or hear about, but on a Podcast I can just click whatever I want or on an article I can do the same.

Removes a large amount of the bias, but not all of it. Still on you to pick who you're going to spend your time with.

Charges against Michael Flynn have just been dropped by the DOJ. Top prosecutor in the case removed himself earlier this Thursday, and all of this is following the release of the memos from the FBI. These have been discussed in these threads already, but the Flynn team have said that these memos (from the FBI) show that the FBI was wrong in how they went about some portions of their investigation.

I know some are not going to be a big fan of Fox here, but this is the best I could do on a breaking news story - https://www.foxnews.com/politics/drops-doj-case-against-michael-flynn-in-wake-of-internal-memo-release

Just a bit of an update here, it is possible for the Judge to reject this and to continue the case if he wants to. Pretty stunning to see the DOJ come out and do something like this, no one was expecting this in the least.

This is the portion where the US DOJ is moving to dismiss the case:
In moving to dismiss, the U.S. said an internal review found that Flynn’s false statements to agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation weren’t “material” to the probe into whether Russia interfered in the 2016 election. “The government cannot explain, much less prove to a jury beyond a reasonable doubt, how false statements are ‘material’ to an investigation that ... seems to have been undertaken only to elicit those very false statements and thereby criminalize Mr. Flynn,” U.S. Attorney Timothy Shea said in a brief.

We'll be waiting on what happens with Sullivan (the judge) in the case. He doesn't have a ton of power to reject, he'd have to prove a lot as there is a good amount of precedent on the topic regarding trial judges, but it is still possible.

A cruise ship seems to be a self-contained world once it is at sea. It occurred to me that if one could ensure that anyone on board s free from the virus, or immune, then occupants could associate freely without risk. This would reduce some of the burden from society, and provide some income for the operators. They wouldn't even need to leave port to be effective. Of course they would need to have medical facilities on board, and any supplies or visitors would need to be checked thoroughly.

Why would you want to be on a cruise with the people you don't know while you can get your own boat and live on that with your family?

There is even a better choice: Bunkers. Rich people already have them.

Or ya know, you don't even need a bunker. Just stay in your house and have food delivered, or go to the grocery store with a mask on.

Your house is the best you're going to get in a time like this, honestly. Just take the proper precatuions and you're most likely going to be okay. Even if you're young and get the Coronavirus you're going to be fine, just don't interact with those at risk.
985  Other / Politics & Society / Re: 2020 Democrats on: May 07, 2020, 08:02:34 PM
I understand that things have changed, yes, but these thinkers are now deemed Republican and Conservative and that's what people are going to refer to them as. If liberal people with similiar thoughts to RBG was appointed and confirmed to the court, we would say that the court is moving towards the left.

Unsure on what your argument really is here. I feel like this is an argument for just the sake of arguing.

I am very sorry you don't understand the meaning of The Overton Window, and how an extremist left would make moderates appear more conservative in comparison.

Just to start, I identify myself as a conservative.

Wouldn't that go the same way if Conservatives were going farther and farther to the right? The people on the left would look more moderate. You're literally arguing based on your own viewpoint, that's it. I would assume that Twitchy and Flying Hellfish would both sit here and argue that the people on the left are moderate while the people on the right are bat shit crazy.
986  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why isn't anybody talking about hantavirus? on: May 07, 2020, 07:56:28 PM
Hantavirus is out there, but the focus of people, the government, and the medical world are at the Covid-19. We don't know if Hantavirus is dangerous or not, but the rats transmit it to people who don't take care their clean, and it is related to the clean of our environment and of course, our home. Just make sure you have cleaning everything in your house so the rats will not come to your home. Be careful with the rats by clean up your table from the food.

It's not that we're just focused on one thing and not another because of priorities, we're just focused on the Coronavirus because it has come out of left field, has a pretty high mortality rate for those that are in the high risk groups (older, diabetes, heart issues, etc) We don't have much research on the Coronavirus as well, while we have a good amount of research on the Hantavirus.

The Hantavirus is something that we've had outbreaks on and we know how to ensure that it won't spread. Not the same regarding the Coronavirus.
987  Other / Politics & Society / Re: US and China are very close to starting a war in the South China Sea on: May 07, 2020, 07:35:08 PM
A war is not going to happen in the situation that we are right now.
COVID-19 is the first enemy for China and US right now and they are not going to fight each other.
Their hospitals are full of people and economies are still under quarantine - at least the USA's is still.
They don't have any benefit of starting a war.

I'd have to agree with this as well, we're not going to start a war over the Coronavirus (which is not the case of this OP) and we're not going to start a war over some minor issue regarding China trying to takeover areas in the South China Sea. I'm pretty sure I've read the articles saying that China is building islands - yes, building Islands - to be used for defense and control purposes.

The most we're going to see is sanctions due to Chinas inaction during the Coronavirus. That's it.

Michael Flynn lost his house trying to pay for the legal fees of defense team. All because the FBI suggested Flynn didn't have a lawyer in his interrogation and because badly motivated FBI agents tried to get him in a perjury trap.

Typical thing for law enforcement to do, they'll tell you that you don't need a lawyer and its kinda on you to figure out if you should have a lawyer present. I think the issue with him is that he was most likely under the impression that he was there regarding an administration matter, and nothing that would come back to haunt him personally.

But yes I did see that he had to put his house up for sale and all that, that's rough. Tough part of the US legal system is that everyday it feels like more and more that its on you to prove innocence instead of the prosecutor having to prove guilt.

Guy has spent years defending himself, and he has to spend LARGE deals of money paying for lawyers. Pretty sure you can't sue a legal entitiy for false accusation, cause then they'd be charging no one with crimes.

A US Navy ship had hundreds of infected people recently. You can't be sure nobody was infected prior to climbing aboard.
Besides, a ship cannot stay indefinitely at large. You need to refuel, get fresh water and food.
Yeah that's where you open up to another issue, if the ship needs to be refueled, needs fresh water, and needs food delivered to it every so often -- all you're doing is opening up the window for an infection, and once when occurs on the ship you're screwed.

The only real way to social distance on a ship is to be sitting in your room and having food delivered -- which yet again is opening up another avenue for infections to spread. Cruise ships are going to have to be closed for a bit.

But you're totally right about this being suicidal to start a political campaign from. If she wants to start, work your way up from the rep / senate level in your state (IL) where they're very popular. (Pretty sure they're more popular in IL then HI)

If I were an evil DNC conspiracy planner I'd send Obamas somewhere like Georgia or Mississippi and try to take a Senate seat from Republicans. IL is too blue and too corrupt.

Probably possible to win the seat in Georgia, cant see a win in Mississippi though. Kinda only saying IL and HI because of Barrack Obama living in HI as a child, and being the former senator from IL.

Georgia is really possible though when you think about it. Stacey Abrams was VERY close to winning the state, I wouldn't be surprised if Michelle could get that last half a percent to pull off a win.

Though all of this is saying that she wants to do it. They probably earned enough favors to be able to live off for their lives. They'll be fine with all the movie deals, book deals, and consulting for companies if needed.
992  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why isn't anybody talking about hantavirus? on: May 06, 2020, 10:57:57 PM
if you have seen rats near your home. maybe you need to clean your garden/home more often.

if rats are already in a supermarket then the supermarket has been too relaxed with health and safely precautions for a long time.. hanta should not be the only concern

+1 to this, unsure on why we'd freak out about Hantavirus when we have a large amount of control, and information regarding it. This isn't like the Coronavirus where there are many many MANY unknowns, this is a virus that we have a good amount of data and research on.

Here's the info from the CDC regarding the Hantavirus - https://www.cdc.gov/hantavirus/index.html - Outbreaks in 2017 and 2012 in the US.

We'll be alright, just staying sanitary will help here. Pretty much helps in all walks of life.

Calm down. Squatz isn't an idiot or a fucking liar.  Why not be civil?

Fuck you and your tone policing you disingenuous twat. So many delusional people here dreaming they have a sliver of a chance of winning in November. Just like last time, you will hang yourself with your baseless overconfidence.

I'm not confident at all about what's going to happen in November.
You seem to be though.

Why not just be civil instead of attacking anyone who disagrees with you?

I honestly missed the fact that he attacked me, but I see it now. Not going to quote what he said cause who cares.

Unsure on why I was even attacked so personally though. I'm literally talking about the fact that I don't think the best way forward is to open up the economy right now. I think we need to take more time to keep places closed and to establish plans for opening the economy. Yes, some people are going to lose money here, but I'd rather have people lose money then have more people die.

Maybe I'm wrong, and I accept that, but I don't think that any of the personal attacks are needed here. At ALL.

994  Other / Politics & Society / Re: [BET] Trump or not Trump 2020, eddie13 vs suchmoon on: May 06, 2020, 10:23:27 PM
Obama is incredibly popular within the democratic party yes, but Michelle Obama is just his wife. That's all. That's like saying just because Bill Clinton was a very popular President then Hillary Clinton has a LOCK on the presidency. We know she didn't, as she lost the Democratic primary in 2008 (to Obama) and lost the Presidential Election to Trump in 2016.

MO is very popular in her own right and she could boost Biden's chances but she's said many times that she doesn't want to run for any elected office. Even if she decided to change that opinion, joining this shitshow of a campaign would be borderline suicidal. There are far better options for starting one's political career.

Fuck you and your tone policing you disingenuous twat. So many delusional people here dreaming they have a sliver of a chance of winning in November. Just like last time, you will hang yourself with your baseless overconfidence.

Oh don't beat yourself up about your failed 2018 predictions. I'm sure you have more than a sliver of a chance this year.

Kids would just meme the shit out of her joining the campaign, talking about how she would take their good food away. The kids that she 'took' the food away from are going to be voting this year I'm pretty sure, so yeah.

But you're totally right about this being suicidal to start a political campaign from. If she wants to start, work your way up from the rep / senate level in your state (IL) where they're very popular. (Pretty sure they're more popular in IL then HI)

Come on guys, you can't be so conservative (or right) to the point of thinking conservative thinkers are moderates.

Why exactly? It is a fact. 20 years ago I was considered a liberal. Today some people call me a right wing Nazi for moderate stances. The Overton Window has been shifted so far left by extremists, it is a fact a large portion of conservatives are simply moderates.

I understand that things have changed, yes, but these thinkers are now deemed Republican and Conservative and that's what people are going to refer to them as. 996  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Could cruise ships become safe havens? on: May 06, 2020, 09:16:31 PM
Safe haven? No, no way at all. The only way you'd be able to make a claim like this is if you were able to effectively test people and then MAYBE cruises would be safer.

If you are able to test everyone before they get on a cruise, and test the entire cruise ship for any remnants of the virus, then yes this COULD be a cruise ship. Cruise ships are the worst possible spot to be in todays environment, you have no idea where people are coming from and if they have the virus AND if they go off the ship and interact with someone who has it.

Joe is on his way out. Meet your new Dem pick. https://docquery.fec.gov/cgi-bin/forms/C00745075/1403629

It literally is committeee for her to be picked for VP. God if this is real and something that happens, I swear to god that's insane. This is literally just going to be another Obama presidency if that is the case. Honestly what am I saying, it's going to be an Obama presidency either way if Biden is elected. They (Biden and Obama) are pretty much the same.

..... Biden is totally not picking his VP right now, too far out and people don't care. They care a lot more about Coronavirus updates.

If Michelle Obama is Joe Biden's pick for a VP, suchmoon I'm pretty sure you have a guaranteed win for this bet. Michelle Obama is someone that's going to win independents even though she doesn't have political experience. People are immediately going to associate her with Obama's policies and Obama is still incredibly popular with moderate democrats. I expected Kamala Harris and speculated that she dropped out early because Biden's campaign cut her a deal for some position in his administration, but I could see Michelle Obama taking the same spot.

Kamala for SoS, maybe? That was what Obama did for Hillary back in '08.

I'm totally going to have to disagree with this. Who in gods fucking name is asking for Michelle Obama to be on the ticket, I think we're pretty sure that not even Michelle Obama wants that to be the case.

Kamala supported some HEAVY conservative policies (at least at the time) when she was the AG for California, which is actually one of the big reasons that African American people hate her.

https://apnews.com/a454d2cabfdcc00af60aebbe4aacda87

(the headline is the article - can't find any other details)

SCOTUS pick #3 would huge for Trump.  The talking points, the drama, ect...

I'm sure all the evangelicals will be praying for a speedy  RGB recovery though.

Now this is some breaking fucking news, holy shit. If RGB goes (and theres been so many rumors for so long now) then the court is going to be pushed to the right for decades upon decades to come.

I know me and you are going to disagree on the pick if there is one, though I do truly hope that RGB gets better -- I wouldn't wish death upon anyone.

This is going to be insane. We'll be chatting here in the coming days as further updates come out.

RGB doesn't need to get better to prevent the Courtnado. She doesn't even need to show or or participate in Court activity, she only needs to not die.

But it's near impossible that Trump does not get one OR TWO more justices in place before Ivanka is voted in.

An ideological hard line liberal coming off the court does not move it to "the right", but to the center.

Lol, the Ivanka comment. I'm expecting another term for Trump and for him to move the court further to the right -- or to cement the fact that the court is going to have a conservative balance for the next 20 or so years.

Come on guys, you can't be so conservative (or right) to the point of thinking conservative thinkers are moderates.

At the rate this is going the only woman willing to be his VP will be his wife, or maybe his sister, not sure.

Heh, lol. Honestly took me a second to catch it, but then it clicked. Biden has so many gaffes it's hard to remember and keep track of them. Instead of Bushism's I think we should start saying Bidenism's

But I'd have to agree with TwitchySeal here, I doubt this is some long drawn out idea from everyone. Why in gods name would Michelle Obama want to be BIDENS VP -- there's really nothing there. Biden is a senile guy who I highly doubt is going to be able to drive voters to the polls. The guy isn't too interesting, and really has an enthusiasm problem with his voters.
