I just had a point on @Sithara007 statement that gulf cricket team model may be adopted by netherland if incidents like racism keep happening. Netherland is developed country and they will not allow team of expats to represent Netherland at international venues. Gulf model is very different. Its really that simple.

The Gulf nations do this in most of the sports. Even in the Olympic games, countries such as Qatar usually fields mercenary athletes from Africa and the former USSR. But the catch here is that the other sports have strict quotas for such athletes, while in cricket you can easily form a "national team" without a single citizen. Look at basketball for example. Citizenship is mandatory, and on top of that there is an additional condition that the number of naturalized citizens should not be more than one.

So its basically International Basketball federation (FIBA) who is regulating this citizenship act in basketball. What is ICC doing in this regard in cricket? Clearly they are silent. Only gulf countries do this shameless act of making national team by hiring players from South Asia. IMO no other country is adopting such model.

Gulf countries are in the early days of making their presence into cricket. For that reason, now they look for good players from the South Asia. This way the national team will slowly progress and there is no opposition being from the citizens. So, nothing to make it a big issue and that's the reason ICC seems to be silent on this matter.

As far as i understand, UAE is having their Cricket team from the 1990 as per their website, so basically it is more than 27 years and you cannot call them fairly new to the game of Cricket. It is a fact that they are including mercenary players in their team because the citizens are not interested to play the sport and ICC has given them the consideration in return for allowing them to have their headquarters in the UAE and basically tax free.

In my country cricket matches are unique and had huge amount of followers. Our government use this as a mode to unique people. And feed away the religious difference and other cultural differences. Even people will forgotten the fight in front of the cricket matches. Many cultural mismatch will be over come with the cricet match.

Until 2010 or so, foreigners were not allowed to represent national teams. That situation changed only 10-12 years ago, when the Emirates Cricket Board pressured the ICC to change the rules, with open support from the pig-3. And the gulf model has been adopted by the other countries as well. Out of the 105 ICC members, more than half (especially those in the gulf and the Europe) doesn't have a single citizen playing for them. And because of these nations, those teams playing with native players are losing out.

An example is here, from the Czech Republic:

It is a news for me; I have not come across any article on the foreign player policy of ICC. If I remember correctly, I first saw Kevin Peterson was playing for England and Usman Khawaja for Australia after that lots of players migrated to New Zeeland, Australia and England.

In my opinion, the country which got the maximum benefits out of this foreign player policy must be England as they have won the 2019 WC with an Irish Skipper.

I have not seen India signed any foreign player so far but interestingly India head coach Rahul Dravid once played for Scotland; I was really surprised on hearing that but not getting any background information about that deal because as far I have been watching him since his debut in 1999, he was successful with India and led India for 2007 WC as well but not sure when he played for Scotland.

Australia is not touring Pakistan even before 9/11, last time they tour Pakistan was in 1997 AFAIR. While SL team was attacked in 2009, Pakistan keep touring Australia despite CA boycott to tour Pakistan. I remember CA has no issue sending players to India to play IPL during peak of covid19. Money is above everything.

So this means that if the Australian team visits India for a series, they will get more incentives and salary as compared if they visit a country like Pakistan?
Don't the cricket players get fix salaries no matter where they play cricket as per the ICC schedule?

Are you kidding here?
Could you provide any proof or any reference for confirming that Rahul Dravid played other than India?

I read that Yuvaraj Singh was freed by BCCI to play for other T20 tournaments only after got retiring from all the formats officially which is the reason we are not seeing any Indian player to be playing any of T20 tournaments. So, your news on Rahul Dravid might be a rumor as representing a national team might need citizenship and after getting duel citizenship, most countries will not treat their own people like before.

You are right that Rahual Dravid has played for Scotland. If you see his profile at Espncricnfo.com (see link below) then its clearly mentioned that he has played for Scotland before joining Indian national side. Not much detail is available about when and how many matches he played for Scotland.

He played for Scotland in English domestic one-day league in 2003 (11 matches) and 1 match against Pakistan (Guess warm up game).

I wasn't aware as well but then came across this tweet from the cricket scotland.

Thanks for updating me. I think ICC laws back in 2003 were fragile so there was no restriction on players to play for different countries (correct me if I am wrong). But I am thinking why he played for scotland? He was called as a "WALL" in Indian cricket and was one of top player of Indian team then why he went to play for Scotland.

Before you asked this, it seemed this was a hot topic on google search and in cricket world (when you type Rahul Dravid on google search you will get suggestions for "why Rahul Dravid played for Scotland") and I found this article to explain you all the details you might be looking for: https://www.sabguru.com/en/why-rahul-dravid-played-for-scotland.

Even I do watch cricket keenly, I did not come to know about this Rahul Dravid's contract with Scotland cricket. It is really a different news for a day.

Article is not explaining well the reason I mean its bullshit to read this from above article "After the World Cup, some senior members of the team were given a break from international cricket. At that time, Scotland were promoted to the Second Division of the National Cricket League for a trial period of three years and the Scottish Cricket Union wanted an Indian cricketer to improve the cricket of their team.". Kohli need some break from international cricket, so it means he can go and play for other countries like Ireland?

LOL... you guys got it completely wrong about Rahul Dravid. He didn't represented the Scottish national side in any of the international matches. Back then, Scotland was given an opportunity to play in the county championship by the ECB, for a period of 3 years. They requested international players for help, as they couldn't afford the mandatory overseas player requirement for county championship. Dravid, being a big supporter of small teams like Scotland immediately agreed to play for them and the Scottish guys were surprised as well as overjoyed at the same time. As far as I know, Dravid refused to accept any payment in return, and was the "player-plus-coach" for the Scottish team for many months.

LOL... you guys got it completely wrong about Rahul Dravid.
Yes you are right. Rahul Dravid never played of scotland in any international matches. He was always a gentleman in cricket and he represented scotland only in the counties which is not a international tournament.
But yes he helped and groomed many scotland players back then.

@Sithara007 knowing Dravid I’m not surprised that he refused any payment, because for him it’s always been about development of the team and player’s first. Lastly I don’t think that any player of his class would have worked for free, but then again he’s always been different and he has time and time again proved that he’s the true gentleman of Cricket.

There is news that BCCI raised 2 billion usd by adding 2 more franchise in IPL, such filthy rich board is not paying to coach of there national side? I mean we all must be realistic and shouldn't get over excited in praising someone to this extent. I am sure he must be getting decent pay for his services as BCCI is richest board.

You are confusing two things here. Rahul dravid will take the money as an Indian coach and he won't work for free. He is a professional and will take money for any service he does for the Indian team. but the above discussion was about the Rahul dravid playing for Scotland and in those days he did not take any fee. I hope this clears both statements.

This is interesting about Rahul Dravid and thanks for clarifying this issue. As a player his stats are phenomenal, in 286 test innings he has average of 52 and 318 ODI innings his average is 39. Lets see how he transfer his skills to Indian team who right now is struggling because of row b/w there ex captain and BCCI.

So year 2021 is going to end in few hours and we have done with one more cricketing year. Can you share what's your best cricketing moment in 2021? I start with mine, I liked T20 WC the most this year and Aussies play throughout the tournament. My cricketing moment was Australia winning the T20 WC for the first time.
