Malik Beasley just got evicted from his apartment after being sued twice for failing to pay rent. He made 60 million dollars playing in the NBA. Now he’s being investigated by the FBI for sports betting and is homeless. It’s shocking to me that someone could make 8 figures and still not own a house and have enough invested to set them up for life. These players need a finance guru.

Well, it's worth noting that he's far from the only NBA player facing such problems. The stories of Antoine Walker and Delonte West are no better.
By the way, I once came across information that approximately 60% of NBA players go bankrupt or experience financial difficulties within five years after the end of their careers.

This is very  true, most NBA players ended up nothing after they are gone from the NBA. This is due to lack of investment and knowledge on how they will manage their wealth.
Bar and girls are one of the most reason why they were being bankrupt. I hope it is not too late for Beasley to get up and make his life better.
I posted about this a few pages back about Trevor Ariza's case, here.

And now we have heard about the case of Malik Beasley. The thing is that he has no team yet if I'm not mistaken. And then he is still being investigated as well. So it's very hard life for Malik right now and recently he breaks this silence about it and says that people are turning their backs on him. That is the sad reality though, when you are on top, everyone loves you, but if you make that one mistake, then they will easily judge you.

Gambling as well could be one factor. I remember one player, when his friends and entourage going to Las Vegas and play and gamble and have fun all night long. So that is the dangers for this young black players, very young and with a lot of money at their disposal. And then the lack of knowledge of how to handle that money. I think Antoine Walker becoming a spokesman to new players because he is one of those who fell victim on it. Hopefully Beasley can get up from his predicament right now and can bounce back and have a better life. 60% is a huge numbers for NBA players going bankrupt after their career is over. The NBA might have responsibility as well to remind players when they are coming into the league and let them know the consequences of their actions in the future if they didn't take care of their money.

Yup, most of those who mishandled their fortune ends up messing up their lives, though nowadays there are many available investment that players can choose to take care of thier money, they just need to think more about their future and just spend what's already spare, with huge contracts that they are recieving it's their obligation to themselves to set their future and not to live like there's no end of this fortune knowing that with a single mistake or an injury can completely ruined their careers.

Its so bad to experience those things and its great for new generation of ballers that they have something to look at if they mishandle their finances.

That's why proper financial planning towards their future is important since even if they are earning huge money from the contract they get from NBA there's still a huge chance that they got broke especially if their spending's exceed to their career earnings.

Its hard to return back on high status if they already experience hardship in life. Since no teams would give them a huge contract especially if they have lots of issues or old enough to play competitive basketball.

It's good that new players are learning from the mistakes of players before them. I don't know those players who wasted their money, perhaps there was no mentor on their side to be their financial adviser that's why many players fall for it and now they don't have any money.

Even the great Mike Tyson was a victim when everyone around him even his manager Don King transpire to get all his money. Good thing is that he was able to recover from it and now living a good life. But for some NBA players, there are no getting back as once their career is over, money is not going to come it plenty and easy.

It’s very hard to improve your game if you are psychologically weak due to your problem. Perhaps this is the reason why he performed poor on the last season.

A huge debt and potential lawsuit while your career is already thrashed makes so hard to recover unless he become humble and start to play low again.

He should start paying those debts slowly while still play on NBA in case he will dodge the allegation against him for match fixing involvement.

It's just a bit unfortunate for him that he's going through all of this while not having a contract in the NBA at all since he's now an Unrestricted Free Agent.

He's supposedly sign a 3-year $42 million contract with the Pistons, and he deserves it TBH after his performance all year long last season. Unfortunately, sports betting incident came, and he's now homeless, and at the same time, the Pistons pulled out of the contract signing and instead signed Duncan Robinson. Right until now, there's no team that's giving him a contract. This is a bit shocking, but I've watched some YouTube videos regarding the incident, and there's a high probability that he really might be involved on a sports betting. Not judging him though.

It's quite unfortunate that these players are earning this huge of an amount, but they can't handle it properly, and instead spending it on some things that they don't really need at all.

Poor guy.

I hope that the NBA itself will have their series of financial literacy class every year. And it should be conducted per team to make it easier for all of them to realize that NBA career isn't forever and don't dwell into gambling while you're in the pro scene.

He's now added to the collection of those NBA players that from living a good life, to this kind of worse situation.

The situation with Beasley is quite strange. He performed well last season, averaging 16.3 points per game, and as far as I know, the Pistons were negotiating with him to sign a three-year contract worth $42 million. But in the end, the signing of this contract stalled due to the investigation against Beasley. In fact, it's currently unclear whether he has any future in the NBA at all.

His team won't let him sign after his involvement in gambling. Because it might compromise his performance also while being with the team.

In fact, it's currently unclear whether he has any future in the NBA at all.
There is no future for him anymore in the NBA. And I think even in the overseas leagues, it's unlikely that some team even for a season will sign him. These people have given the best deal of their lives while many of us have dreamt of it and some are still chasing their dreams to play for an NBA team and have these contract but they have wasted it.

Yeah, a guy earning that much could have afforded a house or at least paid rent. But nah, he didn’t, maybe he really was into gambling. If he doesn’t have a gambling addiction, then how come he still has financial problems with all those earnings? That’s the only explanation I can think of. Poor guy, he didn’t manage his finances well, and now he’s in an even worse situation because of it. Right now, if he doesn’t play next season, playing overseas is his only choice. With his issues, even playing overseas is a question.

Its like you became so desperate on that situation and it possibly destroy team chemistry if that happens. Also almost no teams would provably gamble to take him especially that he's facing serious issue now.

He's badly broke now and reportedly have 8 million in debts.

Also he's talent agency sued him which create noise in mainstream media. He's totally fucked up and recently just what other shared he's been evicted on his rental home which means Beasly he's so fucked up

Hope he learn his lesson and other players should learn on big mistake he made on his career.

Yeah, once they missed out the fortune it's difficult to re-earned the trust especially if their performances or their attitudes affects their relationship with the team who hired them and gave them opportunity to play, they need to be well-prepared in terms of financial as there's no permanent contract since there are many competitions with old and new stars can takeaway their position and they can quickly be replaced.

That's the good thing now, there are many financial adviser who can lead them to choose the right way and right investment to take, they just need to pick who's going to trust about their fortune, and same with what you say even Iron Mike experienced that hardship in life after being so famous and got a huge amount of money.

Perhaps he was invited due to referral commission because surely he wagered huge sum of money that makes an affiliate profitable big time.

I never encouraged someone to gamble but I do knew that there’s a lot of people recruit non-gambler to gamble due to the referral commission.

I become involved on early gambling because someone I knew online invite me to try gambling specifically primedice.

I don't want to rub it in, but I do agree that earning millions and then you can't even afford to buy a house? Something is not adding up, although maybe he will have houses in other cities as he had travelled on different teams. But not paying the rent is something that only him can answer like where is the money?

Overseas though might be a different case, maybe there are still teams that will get him despite the pending case or even if he is found guilty. Maybe that is the only way out for him right now. There are a lot of precedent already of players playing in other league just to continue with their careers and obviously they are still be paid handsomely by teams in millions of dollars.

Mostly those friends who encourage them into gambling disappears when things got tough, its really important to find friends who will not just take advantage, for their own benefit, but find friends who always give you advice to save, its really hard to find, if they can't find one, then they should help themselves, or have a financial adviser like everybody suggest, they have to think of the future instead of short happiness.

Indeed, nowadays you need to be wise and not just to spend your money the way you think that you won't be emptied, if you mishandled your finances due to many expenses long the way you'll find yourself got nothing to use, likewise better to have financial advisor to help you finding the right business to invest your money and to make sure that after your career ended you have good financial support to finance your needs.

The smarter ones, ends up hiring a financial company to take care of their business. I agree that the older generation didn't made that much, but we hear stories about rich players who nobody heard about, because they made good investments.

An example is Vinnie Johnson, the Pistons guard, who never made a dime over 800k in his career per year, and yet he has a 500+ million dollar empire today. How? He created an auto parts company, that spreads across all over USA, and response very quickly to any failure. See how he was smart with his money? Even someone as famous as Magic Johnson, didn't made as much as Malik Beasley did in his career, and yet he owns 1+ billion networth now, thanks to his investments. You just need to realize, while earning, those checks will not keep on coming, so use those to buy something that will keep on getting you paid.

Yes its true most old players don't earn much but the value of money during that time is much higher, i have read and watch a video the other time, that a player owns a Wendy's
and some stores he is just a benchwarmer in NBA but he is being called franchise king, its really having the mindset how he prepare the future its not just we want it, we have to have a goal so that we don't have waste opportunity.

Thank you for sharing this. I didn’t know. A couple more examples are Dave Bing who made hundreds of millions owning a steel company and Junior Bridgeman who owned a lot of Wendy’s and Chili’s franchises.

I want to add Jason Richardson, drafted 2001. He just finished BA in college just this year, there is not that much information on him but he's 2x dunk contest champ.

He played as guards for the Suns, Magic, 76ers and Warriors.

So, there are a lot of ways for them to still go on and have a better life after NBA depending on how they manage their finances or path they want to take.
