Why give @theymos so much Merit in this post? Huh He has no need for it  Grin Grin Grin

Keep those Merits for us!
They say that to quell the beast, the sources must supply it with merit for each new feature created. 'Tis a curse and a blessing indeed.
Also, we should give thanks or appreciate all of the efforts of the admin for maintaining and sustaining our community through different systems. Theymos is still a member of the community, he can receive merits even though he's our admin and besides, we are the one to decide where those merits will go.

If you don't find where to spend merits, then spend it on theymos' posts.

Well, theymos received the Merits in this thread in a form of appreciation for implementing the Merit System which brought a smile on many members on this forum.

So keeping aside the fact that theymos is the Admin and the root of this forum and doesn't need the Merits, on the other side the fact is all these Merits that he received in this thread is for implementing such a great idea with the Merit System which would eventually help this forum to grow more and reduce spam at some extent.

In-fact, like others members did, even i would have thrown a Merit over here if i had one, no doubt.

Yeah, but that was quite some time ago, and I don't think people realized the importance of the merit system in the first few days of its implementation.  Tons of merits were being handed out for posts that were kind of meh.

Me, I can't see giving merits to Theymos--or satoshi for that matter.  As a merit source, I try to reserve my sMerits for lower-ranked members, though it's not always easy to find good posts written by them.  When I see a very well thought out post, it's usually written by a Hero or Legendary member.  Perhaps I need to do some more digging and reading, but it's frustrating.

If you don't find where to spend merits, then spend it on theymos' posts.
I wouldn't advise this, though I have no issue with the quality of his posts.  I think merits should be distributed to members who need them to rank up, provided the posts are worthy.  I have no problem meriting a Legendary member for a fantastic post, but I try to do that sparingly.

I actually appreciate your way of great thinking and the way you keep your sMerits reserved to give it to the most worthy post and to help the lower rank members to boost who contribute quality post.

What i can say over here is, due to Senior Inspiring Members like you the deserving Newbie Members get their first Merit for their worthy post.

Keep up the good work pal, blessings!

Why give @theymos so much Merit in this post? Huh
Without theymos and his decision to build up merit system, the forum would have been burried with tons of shit. It is obviously that theymos deserves thousands of merits for this thread.

Yeah, but that was quite some time ago, and I don't think people realized the importance of the merit system in the first few days of its implementation.  Tons of merits were being handed out for posts that were kind of meh.
It is just part of story. Within that period, not only this lack of right understanding on importance of merit in first days/ weeks after its launch, there were some people abused merit system at beginning days, because they did not think that they will get caught by abusing merit system. Merit system has some amazing features, so let's me recap:
- Prevent spammers to rank up to members with its first version
- Prevent spammers to rank up to Junior Members with its second version
- Tracing merit transactions and catch abusers
- Improving average post quality in the forum as well as reducing spam serverity.
One year anniversary of merit system

If you don't find where to spend merits, then spend it on theymos' posts.
I don't see real convincing reason to do this. Good posts are around, so if people really use the forum with decent time to read and discuss, not spam; I am sure that they will see good posts to send their sMerits to. theymos' posts are always worth of merits, it is undeniable fact.
If you don't see good posts yourself, and if want to save your time to find good posts, there is a topic, in which you can see lots of suggested posts (I don't say all of suggested posts in that thread are good ones, but most of them are probably good posts, or at least not shitposts)

You can have it too (you are doing quite well, I see), just do something that other members may appreciate.

Merit system is well thought out decision (tranthidung pointed out it's advantages above), forum members appreciate that and give theymos merit as token of appreciation.

Why give @theymos so much Merit in this post? Huh He has no need for it  Grin Grin Grin

Keep those Merits for us!

Funny but I asked myself that very question when I was finding it difficult to earn some merit (back in 2018). When I thought about the level of merit he recieved been influence mostly as an act of appreciation, I asked why can't a simple "Thank you message" be used to show that appreciate as I felt we were been deprived merit by over meriting his topic although all those thoughts disappeared after I got informed on the number of smerit circulating the forum monthly. There's quite enough to go round.

If you don't find where to spend merits, then spend it on theymos' posts.

I disagree with this suggestion, personally I don't think I have ever merited any of his post although I have recieved from him on several occasions. Me not meriting, doesn't mean I don't find his post informative or anything but due to the difference in our time zone, (when he's active is when I'm sleeping) so before I see any of his update/posts, it must have gotten enough merit to rank up 10-30 different newbies Grin. So I just intentionally decide to take my meriting somewhere else especially as his post aren't hidden like others and can easily be merited.

In my view, If you can't find a quality post, lower your standards and merit the next decent post you see (someone who isn't spamming)

It would be nice if users would receive some notifications every time they receive merits.
Simple. Nothing fancy.

Is something like this possible in Bitcointalk forum?
Indirectly, you already have it. Whenever you make a new post, you will get indirect notification on your merit statistic.

Simple. Nothing fancy.

Is something like this possible in Bitcointalk forum?
Maybe script or planned for future?

I haven’t posted on recent merits in this manner for sometime, so here’s an update:

What I’m showing is merit distribution over the last 10 weeks (weeks 28 to 37), with all previous data aggregated (2018 and 2019 "compress") in order to reduce the number of columns. Week 37 is still partial (lacking the weekend’s data).

I’ve highlighted in yellow the most significant changes over between the last two complete weeks: Bitcoin Discussion and Development & Technical Discussion have gone down a fair share. On the other hand, Economics (WO?) and Market Place have boosted, whilst some Local Boards have lingered (French, German, Italian, Turkish). Beginners & Help has picked-up a bit, so has Politics & Society, whilst Meta has dropped a respectable amount (will recover this week I see).

It would be nice if users would receive some notifications every time they receive merits. <…>
Perhaps @Piggy could add it to his notifier, although I think he’s not very active lately and may be short on spare time. It would be nice for this (and the mention notifications) to be inner forum features, but I don’t believe we’ll see them on the current platform (Epochtalk has the mention notification feature, and could perhaps expand it to merit notification).

Eh, I don't know if I'd care for such a feature--it's easy enough to see where you're at, merit-wise, when you make a post or check your profile.  And as I said in a thread where someone suggested a visible marker of ranking up, Theymos doesn't tend to make a lot of these frivolous, cosmetic, and unnecessary changes that get brought up.  Some ideas are good, some bad, but they all seem to fall upon deaf ears.

Bitcoin Discussion and Development & Technical Discussion have gone down a fair share.
Hm.  I think I've handed out quite a few merits in the latter section recently, but it doesn't surprise me that the merit flow to Bitcoin Discussion has dropped.  It's like pulling teeth trying to find decent posts to merit there.

There's this counter under my username that always makes me curious when it goes up. I don't remember the exact value, but some how I always notice when it changes.

You could us a browser extension such as Check4Change on your profile to get a notification when your Merit count goes up.

I second the idea.
I have a feeling that with a few adjustment piggy could add to Maggiordomo (his telegram bot notifying users of mentions. Link is here) an options to be notified of merits received, amount and link to merited thread.
Same as LoyceV I am always curious when I receive Merits, and I use this as a positive feedback loop to improve my writing and posting habits (trying to keep my line straight, of course, otherwise I would be only posting trains meme on WO).
I am definite looking forward such enhancement. I don’t know if other users are willing to take this challenge!
Of course this should come as an opt-in option to Maggiordomo, because, you know, “Merit is life”, but also “Merits ruined my life”
