Excellent batting display from the England, mammoth target of 20 runs. Australia is in big trouble.  Grin

LOL... Before the start of the series, 90% of the users here were saying that England is going to whitewash Australia. And look at what happened. Australia very nearly pulled off an innings victory. BTW, I haven't seen too many posts congratulating Pat Cummins. We can't ignore his contribution here (both as the captain, and as the opening bowler). He made his test debut 10 years ago, at the age of 18 years. And this is very rare in Australia, where the selectors normally doesn't consider players for national team selection until they are 21-22 at least. And I guess he was the last teenager to make debut for them.

England batting again collapsed in the 2nd innings. When Dawid Malan and Joe Root were batting at 80+ each I thought they could turn the game around for England, but none of the remaining England batsmen were able to show any big performances and Australia easily won this test match.

After Root and Malan showed application on the third day, the English submitted their surrender. English crumbled once again with the new ball, giving a target of 20 runs is just incredible. All down to England's first innings surrender - a disappointing start to the series. This was a totally one-sided match. Australia put 500 on the board, the visitors struggled to score 300.

I do agree with you. I was of opinion that England will have upper hand in this Ashes as they have strong team compared to Aussies. Full credit to Cummins, he bowled well in his first test as captain. He was first fast bowler captain for Aussies in 70 years.

First test as the captain for Cummins. Let's see how it goes from here for him. England was perhaps a bit overconfident? They didn't played any warmup matches before the first test. The only match practice they had before the Brisbane test was the abandoned match between their A and B teams, which lasted for just 29 overs (two and half days out of three days washed out). Increasing number of COVID cases in Australia (as well as the ongoing BBL) means that they can't yet schedule any matches against the first class teams.

Now it's too late to discuss the warmup matches and why England did not opt for them. I do think that the England team, after this loss, will come back strong in the second test. They have the players and talent to turn the tables, therefore Australians can't relax and take things for granted even though they have won the first match.

First off, test matches in Australia and England look so beautiful. I love the pitches. Joe Root changed his stance as compare to 2019 ashes. Now he is keeping foot infront of middle stump so that his head is Infront of off stump. Joe Root classy shot, the temperament to stay alive in the hunt and the leadership to lead a team to victory. The character he has shown in the fightback is clearly visible and i can see the intention to stay in the crease till lunch or even further so that his team can put on a tough fight to wrap things up on the final day.

Hardly anyone in this thread follow test cricket or even remember last 5 tests so i don't blame them for predicting anything. Other than this thread i didn't find any discussion where majority were favoring the Poms, even their die hard fans. All discussion was about whitewash by Aussie or outcome of rotation policy in the Ashes, which started last year or so.

Australian stadiums are majestic, crowd is good and coverage is average. Recent coverage of Gabba felt like its went back to 2000s, No ball drama, equipment failure or take today's example where they covered good amount of overs with only 1 camera. On commentary every broadcaster should ban Warne and Junior without any explanation, they give ear cancer to the listener.

Thats the dilemma of England cricket team. They have average team most of the times but as soon as there performance start gets better they become arrogant and show such non serious behavior. They have got a blistering reply from Australia that England s still an average team.

On commentary every broadcaster should ban Warne and Junior without any explanation, they give ear cancer to the listener.

I do agree on this note with you that Shane Warne must not be allowed to enter any commentary box. He is so biased and full of hate for his opponents.

I never expected a whitewash by either side though my prediction is that England will win this series though I didn't expect Australia to demolish them in the 1st test in this manner. Australia is improving drastically in all formats currently.

England need to rethink their strategies if they wish to shift the momentum back in their favour in this series.

Not true as I have been following the test cricket for quite some time and I am a die hard fan of cricket also  Wink
From 1989 to 2003, Australia consecutively won the 8 Ashes which is a big record. No doubt, Aussies were the best team in that era. From 2009 to 2013, England dominated the Ashes with three consecutive wins. Then the race was very even as each team wins alternatively till 2019 when we had a 2-2 draw in the Ashes.
Thereafter the covid hit us and along with many other tournaments Ashes was postponed too and now we are playing the post covid Ashes.

LOL.. I heard there was power outage? Also, as per the COVID protocol, TV staff were cut down by 75%. This delayed the resumption of TV coverage. Ashes is being watched by hundreds of millions around the world (a large chunk of that number being in the sub-continent). Watching the matches from Australia live on TV is another experience altogether. I still remember watching Brett Lee and Glenn McGrath steaming in two decades ago, when I was still in school. It was more stimulating than my morning coffee.

I never expected a whitewash by either side though my prediction is that England will win this series though I didn't expect Australia to demolish them in the 1st test in this manner. Australia is improving drastically in all formats currently.

England need to rethink their strategies if they wish to shift the momentum back in their favour in this series.
Yeah whitewash sounds overstretched as couple of matches are D/N and anything could happen in Pink Ball tests. Anderson-Broad duo will join the team for sure then it should be a excellent contest.

Btw their batters are in terrible form.

Haha yeah for like 30-40 minutes. Fox sports feed went poof and everyone suffered. It was hilarious tho, literally felt like i was watching county cricket or some other local league.

Yes I was expecting that england will give a tough fight to Australia and may be try to force a draw atleast take it to the day 5 of the test match but again they collapsed. With only 55 lead left and 8 wickets in hand they had a good chance to give about 150 to australia and take it the 5th day of the test Match. England have alot to worry about specially in batting department. Their opening partnership needs to come good most importantly.

Even when they resumed the coverage, it was not the usual stuff. I don't really understand the point in reducing the number of passes allotted to the TV staff, giving the excuse of COVID protocols. They can reduce the number of viewers, but how can they reduce the number of technical staff? Even after two years, it is really irritating to see at least some of the countries engaging in this sort of restrictions. And I guess in Australia the vast majority of the adult population are already vaccinated.

England is facing a nightmare. For maintaining slow over-rates in the first Ashes Test in Brisbane, England has been docked five points in the World Test Championship and fined 100% of their match fees. On day 2, they only bowled 84 overs whereas they were supposed to bowl 98, which put them 10 overs behind the over rate. However, 100% of their match fees for slow overate, when the match ended so early? All these decisions are not acceptable to me, some rules need to be corrected. There are a lot of poor decisions going on with the game in general, and the game is losing its luster.

Now it's too late to discuss the warmup matches and why England did not opt for them. I do think that the England team, after this loss, will come back strong in the second test. They have the players and talent to turn the tables, therefore Australians can't relax and take things for granted even though they have won the first match.
Recently we have no warm-up matches due to some busy schedule and Covid both having serious impact on them, and we have very few warm-up matches or just practices nothing good happening which is seriously hurting to many players. After lost of first test match now I still have feeling England is just one man army, and they can't compete with Australia with current squad because no player can bat good just few bowlers have some good experience but batting line is totally crap, so they need some long term planning for this if they want some better results in near future.

Cummins has done some good in his first test as skipper look like he is going to stay on this job for some time because CA is not happy about Steven Smith came again as captain.

Australia have won the match with style. There is big improvement and how this gonna get continued in a consistent manner is unknown.

The senior team used to perform like this and one can believe they'll make it. With the present team that is missing. This win could boost Australia and make England prepare themselves better. More discussions were taking place about whitewash, but I don't think even though Australia have got home advantage.

The Australian board failed to check and verify these details and they had the worst experience in terms of umpiring decisions because they failed to identify no balls and the technology available for the match. With the advent of technology the on field umpires are becoming lazy as they failed to look for front foot no balls and they did not inform about the lack of technology to anyone as the on field umpires were relying on the third umpire to inform them.

Australians have history of many big failures and cricketing hypocrisies, but they never accept this and ICC never have any action against them because they are founding members of cricket and have role of superpower in cricket which is worst for this game.

In this match failure of technology or human error both things apply but still no noise or any apology from them if this happened in any other country specially in Asia then there could be too many noises and have some serious punishment about this all because here few countries are having nothing strong relationship with ICC or Australia. Still, it's a good win for them and two collapses are alarming for the English batting line-up which is already on ventilator.

That does not matter anymore now, they have won the match and won it in a commendable manner. Winning by 9 wickets is a big win. 4 more matches are left and England can still come back if they start working on their batting. For the second innings only two playes were able to bat and the rest of the team were struggling. Overall they have the potential and they can surely comeback.
