You don't need water cooling to have quiet. You just need to stop designing for maximum density. Spread the chips out and use nice quiet slow big fans. That's really all water cooling is.
If the SP20 was twice as large (same number of chips, without putting 2 chips in line of the airflow) it would run much better and quieter with 2 fans.
I agree with the sentiment on spreading chips out, in every product other than the SP20 though. The SP20 has other issues / coexisting hurdles required to get it silent at stock speeds which wouldn't necessarily be solved with a decrease in density. On the SP10, SP30, SP31, SP35 though, almost certainly. Of those only the SP10's fans were actually loud, everything else was PSU noise from using 1U PSUs. Which other issues do you think the SP20 has that would cause decreased density to not allow it to become silent? That's classified information Doesn't matter his response, what matters is: is there any chance of watercooled Spondoolies miner?!?!?!
There are significant challenges to a watercooled SP20. Primarily, I'm too busy to set it all up. Cable ties are your friend That's $800 of cooling gear for a $400 miner, as well as spagetification Maybe it would be viable with 'northbridge' off the shelf blocks and chain them all with a syscooling level [$50] kit, although even then we're talking 8x $25 + $50 I completely agree with your opinion. In fact I would say when comparing the sound issue to the sp-20 and the s-5 the s-5 with mods can be made quieter then the sp-20. I have a thread that shows mods under 20 bucks to make the s-5 pretty quiet. If you are willing to do mods the s-5 is easier to lower the sound.

That's nothing inherent in the SP20 though, the S5 just has about half the power density as the SP20 so it takes a lot more air to cool. If you were to put the SP20 in a double wide case, you could considerably reduce the noise for a couple reasons. First off, you could use two slower fans to move the same amount of air as the singe 120mm fan with a much better acoustical profile, which would help quite a bit. Second, the lower velocity with dual fans would decrease turbulence and grill noise, further helping it. Lastly, running four boards with two ASICs each would not only stop having the second ASIC running on hot air, it would allow you to use cheap heatpiped CPU coolers. Decreasing the thermal resistance between the die and the air can make a huge difference, as you then need a lot less airflow to maintain the same die temps. I'm genuinely curious why Syke's original point that the SP20 could not be made much quieter without watercooling by decreasing density. I haven't noticed any coil whine or anything specific to the boards that would lead me to that conclusion. That's $800 of cooling gear for a $400 miner, as well as spagetification Maybe it would be viable with 'northbridge' off the shelf blocks and chain them all with a syscooling level [$50] kit, although even then we're talking 8x $25 + $50 Yeah, it was more just a joke. There's no need to use watercooling when talking about dissipating 100W/chip.

My predictions, three months ago: Bitcoin TLV `14, #25 - Guy Corem - Mining ForecastBitFury revealed their mining address two days afterwards. I didn't expect to see AntPool grow so much. Let's see how the rest of my predictions will be in 2015. It was based of BTC value of $400 The rest of Inside Bitcoin TLV lectures can be found here: Inside Bitcoins Tel Aviv 2014tI think that it was one of the best Inside Bitcoin conferences ever. Kudos to Meni Rosenfeld. Nice video. That forecast did not include the bitcoin exchange rate, which is the most uncertain variable for mining as a business: Racks of machine can become paperweight when bitcoin price dive below $100 Home mining however are not affected as much since many of them are not profit oriented Thank you. I wish I could forecast the bitcoin exchange rate Have you ever considered in forming an alliance like OPEC to limit the hash rate race? I just saw Bitfury said that their cloud service would only add hardware based on demand, is this a trend towards more cloud based service?

Question on the SP3x machines. I have replaced 21 power supplies now (i received all the murata ones and have replaced with Emerson). The emerson power supplies I have bought in the US blink orange when I install them or run green and then 10 minutes later or so start acting up. The Muratas that are bad keep going down every night around midnight and then are red the next day. If I swap out the bad red light ones with another machines' power supply that is always green, that power supply goes down the next day. Anyone experience this? I will say that 70% of the machines I have run steady, but the rest are driving me insane.

No, it's illegal. How is that illegal? It is just a consensus (if it ever can be reached). Even pools can be allied together to protect against a faulty fork in 2013, and against potential 51% attack if it ever happens Imagine a vendor that have leading semi-conductor process 10nm, he can limit his production scale at a certain level so that the network hash rate increase slowly. He then could start a cloud mining service and sell the hash power at market rate, which leaves him large margin to deal with market volatility. I think that is what Bitfury means

1) Upgrade to latest FW. 2) We worked with Emerson to fix their FW. Some Emersons you buy on ebay have old FW and wont work. You must mark them as "generic" in /etc/mg_generic_psu file. 3) Set lower WATT limit to the failing PSUs. If not helping, contact me on Skype.

If miners start making deals, then why not make 51% attack? The more miners hate each other the better for the BTC it is

Snapshot of the manufacturers poll Philipma1957 ran before the mods killed it off I find the mods action unbelievable. Guy Edit: I opened a meta thread to discuss the poll removal by the mods, without any explanation: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=938782.0Who has the best firmware? Someone that always buys Bitmain products isn't going to have a clue who has the best firmware, or customer service. To truly get honest feedback from those questions the user would need to have products from all the manufactures listed. Since I only own two of the manufacture's listed in the polls, I really can't answer them accurately.

^very true. unfortunately the shipping size/weight=cost would be about 50% more. In any case the SP20 is quite reasonable when its running at 1200GH or less. I wonder what the comparison of the shipping size/weight/cost of changing the specs of a SP20 to run cooler would be compared to adding the weight of water blocks, tubing and radiators to the box? More if its a sealed system with included liquid. Yea man, I would totally be into a more silent miner. Someone has to do some thinking outside the box. With today's technology computer fans that we've been using since the 80's just has to change. Don't need a better fan or to reinvent it, need a completely different way to cool electronics that no one has thought of yet. Chemicals? Compounds? Liquids? Has to be something.
