Monero Missives

September 15th, 2014

5. We have a new tagged release, 0.8.8.4, available for download (binaries: Windows, Mac, Linux, FreeBSD). This adds the following features:

  • Testnet: we now have an operating testnet. When using bitmonerod or simplewallet you can now use the --testnet flag to use testnet instead of mainnet. Feel free to run a mining node or just a testnet node, we will be setting up email alerts for testnet nodes when an update is pending (although having a few older testnet nodes on the network won't hurt testing).
  • FreeBSD Compatability: Monero now works on FreeBSD out the box. We will add it to the ports tree soon. At the moment compilation is no different from regular Linux and Unix compilation, and the same dependencies apply.
  • GPG commits: we have begun GPG-signing commits and merges. This is an important step in maintaining the integrity of the codebase, and will ensure that any compromise of our computers or even the github account won't allow a malicious attacker to push code to the repository without the unsigned commits being spotted. Verification can be done by running 'git log --show-signature', which will show and verify signatures. An example of what you should see is below:

  • Versioning: versioning is a lot easier, now, as tagged releases from 0.8.8.4 onwards will show version-final (eg. 0.8.8.4-final) as their version, and those built between tagged releases will show version-commithash (eg. 0.8.8.4-9088ea1). We expect this will greatly aid in debugging problems, as we can immediately pinpoint the actual version / commit a user is on.
  • Logging: default log levels have been adjusted so that non-critical warnings are now relegated to log-level 1 and above. Apart from the normal reorganisation notifications, the only messages in red that should show up in the daemon are actual errors.

- updated by fluffypony

I downloaded the update.  Really strange getting no error messages Grin  Is there a reason the update is not on the first page?

I had set up a second wallet which is empty.  I erased the contents of the file associated with that wallet as I confused it with the simple wallet log file.  I thought each wallet had it's own log file but I guess not.  I figured it wasn't correct but did it anyway as it was empty.  The help menu in my working wallet shows nothing for restoring a wallet.  I checked the FAQ and it says that when restoring a wallet from seed it will ask for a NEW name and NEW password.  I would really like to keep both the name and pw.  Is there something else I can do?  I have the keys file.

Also note that the fee will be changed "soon".

It will be determined by the KB size of the transaction not the amount of coins.  This will make the fee around 0.01 for most transactions.  Sending a transaction composed of many smaller previous transactions will cost more.  Again we will find out the details, soon.
2044  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: September 15, 2014, 06:51:48 AM
It has been a very slow day of trading.

I have found a way to prevent myself from turning all my btc into Monero.  Crazy glue the number keys.

Are you sure you won't regret the choice to diversify into BTC, 1-2 years down the line... Cheesy

All I'm sure of is that I am here and it is now.  There is one more thing, those that I love now I will love forever.

I have already converted the majority of my modest amount of btc into XMR.

btw - smooth, taco, flufffy... some shill on poloniex's trollbox is claiming that you all "Worship" cryptozoidberg,  spreading fud and about how BBR is better, and that he's the "Best anon dev" on the planet and that you guys worship him... can you touch on your overall feelings about the lone BBR dev at all? I don't see why both coins cannot peacefully co-exist, but the fud is annoying. thanks again.

Install a Poloniex addon to mute people, from here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=776060.msg8746634#msg8746634

Thanks, but i just left it for a while, i don't need to ignore people on the trollbox, i was just looking for the truth, as he says xmr devs "Bow" to cryptozoidberg, which i don't believe... thanks! Cheesy

Are you serious?  I was there and I don't think anyone would take him seriously.  At least he was polite.

I just checked and he is still at it.  I wonder how many hours he is going to keep this up LOL

OK back on topic.  We are waiting for soon.  That is all.

26.5k krill account for sale.  200 chips or best offer.  Pm me.

Is that legal to buy/sell accounts? Would guess probably not

It happens all the time and Seals is aware of it.

Very easily, the right click menu has a paste option in the command window.

There is no context menu in 0.8.8.3. CTRL-V does not work either.

EDIT: Ahhh I found it. Click on icon in upper left corner of pane. edit -> paste

You may get an unwanted space in your address and I think this may be due to it wrapping onto 2 lines.  It's not always easy to see.  It happened to me while setting up my miner so it didn't work at first.

Why do you guys have so many different support topics and shill accounts here ?

Why do you have maxcoin in your signature? Why do the tides go in and out? No one can explain that.

i have MaxCoin in my sig because i support the coin and the tides go in and out because of the gravitational pull of the moon.
anything else you want to know ?

You missed the reference to the tides.  May I suggest you google it.  "Why do the tides go in and out? No one can explain that."
Are you this snarky in real life?

Sorry I have not been following this thread of late.  To all those looking to go to the Moon, the New Horizons spacecraft is due to reach Pluto on July 14, 2015.  That is in 307 days 7 hrs and 38 min.  It was launched in 2006 and I have been following it for 5 years.

So have patience it will come.  Then again I hear that btc is a tourist trap.

If you're not asking "What have you done for me lately" then you're asking "Are we there yet; How much longer?"   Wink

I'm just curious if it's going to turn into a circle jerk "don't worry about it buy ram" while another coin implements the fixes needed to support a larger network/more transactions with lower hardware requirements.

I just think the approach of "Buy more ram" at 8GB running out is a terrible one to hear when thinking about the future of a coin.  However hearing the delay is "because it's being done right" (assuming it actually is) is the best possible explanation.

OK I get it now.  You don't know what the terms "swap file' and 'virtual memory' mean, much less how or why one would go about adjusting them.

Here's the skinny: increasing your swap file gives your PC more memory, takes about 60 seconds (including reboot), and costs nothing.  Google it.

Bitcoin's footprint is much heavier than Monero's, but that hasn't even slowed it down and most BTC users aren't even aware of the issue.

A large percentage of users do not know what those terms mean and even greater percent do know how to adjust the VM. Additionally, most users do not know how to upgrade RAM. These users will not Google it. They will quit, put it off till later, or post all over the place asking for help.

I know I had issues on my 8GB Windows box over a month ago. I could only run the deamon if closed most other apps. (edit - i have since upgrade to 16GB and the deamon loads normally)

I do not know the rate the XMR blockchain is growing but someone with more time could extrapolate the blockchain size vs time and figure out when the daemon will not load on a plain vanilla Win build with 8GB. Unless the database is complete at that time, new users will be unable to try out XMR and those already using XMR will lose functionality.

Bitcoin's footprint s indeed heavier but it has multiple lightweight wallets. I don't know of any XMR lightweight wallets endorsed by the devs.

I will repeat that I only have 4GB, use windows 8.1 and can run XMR.  I guess it depends on what else you want to do.  I am able to wander the web and play poker at the same time, neither of which are resource intensive.
2054  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: rpietila Altcoin Observer on: September 09, 2014, 08:40:56 PM
Nekomata how much RAM do you have.  I didn't see you mention it and after you did people are talking that 8GB is not enough.

I have 4GB and can run a node.  It has been near maxed out for over a month with it seems no change over that time.  Somebody was discussing physical RAM vs virtual which may be the reason but I would have no idea.

Edit: iCEBREAKER, I also have no idea or need so far but will google it at some point.

@smooth, @rpietila:

I don't think that we can take such statistical conclusions to the recent variations in the number of transactions, without taking into account the concern that users would have had during the brief time of the attack/fork and the couple of days that followed. I'm not saying that the higher transaction fee did not impact on number of transactions, but just that in this particular instance, it was not really the only motivation for less transactions.

In any case, I'm looking forward to per-kb fees, and appreciate the rationale that you've both presented on this matter.
~ Myagui

The fee increase happened in the response to the spam attack and I don't believe it produced the user concern this last attack did as it didn't have an effect except for some minor delays for a short period of time.  The question of the effect of the fee increase was brought up before the last attack and the fee increase did indeed decrease the number of transactions.  I didn't check but I believe the decrease was the same as just stated.

P.S.  It would be nice to have more hair to turn gray Grin

When the 0.1 fee will be fixed ?

When we replace it with per-kb fees.

When
you you replace it with ... ?

Fees based on the size (in kilobytes) of the transaction.

I don't think that answers his question of when.

The following was posted yesterday......

Can we still expect per KB fees until September ~15th?

Good job if everything else is now working properly again.
Any comment on this? Smiley

We've been reeling this week to weed out any effects of the attack, so hard to say. We'll regroup tomorrow and see where we're at with that, but it has/had been progressing quite nicely: https://github.com/mikezackles/bitmonero/tree/fees_wip

I guess that it will be happening soon®

Now the version # needs to be added to the tread title. Smiley

Krill not updated yet.  I believe it's not automated and if so and with Seals having to manually deal with deposits may effect the crediting of krill.

I hope I reached a krill milestone and would really like to know.

Just email them at support@sealswithclubs.eu 0.005 is nothing for them, I am sure they didn't scam you, it might be a technical issue.

I'm way too lazy to email them. If someone can do that for me, thank you.

Disappointing from such a site, I should get some kind of bonus.

I don't curse but for you I'll make an exception.

Are you fucking kidding me?
