1101  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] AEON 2nd gen cryptonote, anon, mobile-friendly, scalable, pruning on: October 16, 2015, 11:41:59 PM
I am now running a Monero node using the 0.9 beta version which is using almost no resources.  Can I run an Aeon node at the same time?  My comp is not very powerful but it does not have much problem running Aeon.  My internet connection is 30 Mbs down and 5 Mbs up and is hardwired if it makes a difference.

If you can run AEON by itself then yes you can very likely run AEON along with Monero 0.9.

Yes I ran them both with no issues.  I will start Aeon again after I deal with restoring my Monero wallets.
1102  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency - 0.8.8.6 on: October 16, 2015, 11:30:23 PM

Why don't you just use your mnemonic seed to recreate your account with the new binaries? (ver. 0.9)
https://github.com/monero-project/monero-site/blob/master/knowledge-base/user-guides/Restoring%20your%20Monero%20Account.md

Thanks to all that helped.  My wallet is refreshing after restoring from seed.  Thanks luigi1111 for instructions on the command prompt.  I remember having an issue restoring from seed once when trying to use the command prompt I got after just clicking on simplewallet.  I then restored with the keys file which was very simple.

After restoring this empty wallet I will start on a wallet that actually has Moneroj.

Thanks again.

1103  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency - 0.8.8.6 on: October 16, 2015, 09:01:03 PM
Just copy the keys files to the folder where your simplewallet.exe is located. You can also copy your bin files so that you don't have to refresh the wallet from scratch (I think they're compatible).

Basically the [walletname].keys file has your encrypted spend+view keys pair.
The [walletname] file stores the info about the incoming/outgoing transacions.

I don't know if you meant to do this for 0.8.8.6 or the beta.  Since I had the beta running and it would take a while to get 0.8.8.6 running I copied and pasted my .keys file into the folder of simplewallet of the 0.9 beta and it still didn't recognize it as an existing wallet when I started simplewallet.  I'll have time tonight to do it for 0.8.8.6 if that's what you meant.

@Nik4692, It was seemingly straightforward so I have no idea what I could have done wrong Tongue
You are doing something wrong. What's the exact name of the .keys file for the wallet? What's the exact command line you are trying to execute to open this wallet?

I can't see the exact name of the .keys file anywhere.  I assume this is name of the wallet?  If I open the file it looks like Chinese characters.

I open simplewallet and after "Wallet file name:"  I put in the name of the wallet like I've always done.

Thank you

There is no need to try with the previous version (0.8.8.6.) of bitmonerod.exe.
Do you have any files that have the extension keys in their name?
Better yet, could you tell us the full name of the files you copied?

Edit:

When one creates a wallet with simplewallet 3 files are generated:
  • [walletname]
  • [walletname].address.txt
  • [walletname].keys
Of these 3 the important one is the [walletname].keys file because it's that one that has your private keys.
There are only two ways of recovering an account: with the mnemonic wordlist and with the keys file.

Are you running simplewallet from the command line or by clicking?
If the later try this:
  • Open the folder where simplewallet.exe is located
  • Make sure you have the [walletname].keys file there
  • Right click inside the folder on windows explorer and select open command line (i'm not sure of this description here since i'm not in windows)
  • Run simplewallet from the command prompt

If this does not work, there probably is a problem.

Right don't open the *.keys file; tell us what the * is and also what exactly you're typing into simplewallet. Smiley

Edit (for edit above): In Windows, hold Shift then right click in blank space within a folder with nothing selected to enable an "Open command window here" option.

*= albert
what i am typing into simplewallet= albert
as I've always done

How do I run simplewallet from command prompt as you desribed?  When I open it up the command prompt reads.......
C:\Users\me\AppData\Roaming\BetaMonero>
How do I run it from here?

As far as where are my keys file now,  I tried dragging them to the simplewallet application folder directly which did nothing that I can tell.  I dragged it into the BetaMonero folder and there it is.  Actually when I dragged the keys file what ends up in BetaMonero is the keys folder which when opened up contains the keys file.  That is not how it was originally, it was just the keys file itself.

Thanks everyone for trying to help helping The Drooling Masses©

My windows 0.9 beta has synced and it is using less memory than google chrome  Smiley Smiley

After I started I shut down my miner which uses both cores of my dual core pentium and therefore maxes it out.  I then noticed while syncing that every 200 blocks there is an operation that maxes out my cpu for a couple of seconds.

I just now opened simple wallet and entered the wallet file name of a wallet that is currently empty.  The message I received was.....

"The Wallet doesn't exist, generating a new one
password:"

When I first open simplewallet it notes the version # as v0.8.8.7-7792255
 Sad Tongue Cry

When I typed "exit" in the daemon I received more info than the times I tried to exit when the daemon hadn't fully synced but still it didn't exit.  I retyped "exit" and it very quickly shut down.  I started the daemon up again which only took a few seconds.

The .keys file of the wallet you want to open should be in the same folder as simplewallet.exe or you should provide a path. If it's in the same folder, but simplewallet still can't find it then you should double check the name of the file (maybe rename it to something very simple as "M.bin.keys" and then try to load "M.bin" - this will be generated based on the .keys file).

When I downloaded 0.9 beta I created a folder BetaMonero for it while keeping 0.8.8.6 in folder Bitmonero.  Now there are no more KEYS files in the Bitmonero folder or the other file with the wallet name!  I do have copies of the KEYS files.  I don't know when this happened.  The first time I tried to run the beta in a new folder and then closed it that new folder disappeared and in the original Bitmonero folder there was a new folder which was/is lmdb.

I guess it's time to get on IRC

the 0.8.8.6 wallet files should open on 0.9

but if not

u can run the bitmonerod from 0.9, and run the wallet from 0.8.8.7 ( i think ). thats the beauty of the software architecture of monero.

Do you mean run the beta daemon and the wallet from 0.8.8.6?  That's all I have.  I just tried to open 0.8.8.6 with the beta daemon running and I get a message from windows 8.1 "This App can't run on your PC.  To find a version for your PC, check with the software publisher."

Edit:  I assume you were talking to me. Embarrassed

yep sorry.

im on windows 8.1 64 bit. litrally just dloaded the old 0.8.8.6 bins, was able to run simplewallet

Feels like we're going around in a circle.  ofc I can run my 0.8.8.6 wallets on 0.8.8.6, all I need to do is start the daemon and let it sync, total time a few hours as it is a couple of week behind and only 2 1/2 hrs to shut it down as I have only 4GB RAM.  And my comp won't be usable for much else.

How do I run them on the beta?  Wait the beta isn't even what 0.9 will be as far as simplewallet is concerned considering all the improvements that MoneroMoo has done.

I think I'll just go back to waiting for the official release of 0.9 which I hear is coming soon Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

Price is dropping, somebody should call houbi CEO.

It's a catastrophe!

Wow that cat wheel is a real thing and it costs 1 btc ($249)

One of my cats should love this.

How long would I have to wait till the price is less than 1/3 btc?

BTW this was on kickstarter and they raised their $10,000 goal in 7 hrs and raised $320,000 in a month Shocked

i've mentioned this before but i've got old deprecated wallets that crash 0.8.8.6 when i load them. it asks for my language of choice for the words then crashes. i tried the new 0.9 version and got it sync'd from scratch. but it still crashes at the same step, after asking what language i would like for my words. just letting you devs know. is there an old version of the software that still works that i could use to load this wallets and move the funds? and if so, where could i get that from?

- much appreciated

Hello from 2+2 Smiley

Although I have never used it for problems, I hear going on IRC is helpful.  Have you tried #monero or #monero-dev ?

now u can run jwinterms wallet. edit the conf file to local host or whatever and boom! monero gui.

I don't need a gui.  What I need is a way to access the wallets I created with 0.8.8.6 when I run the windows beta.  Is that what you are trying to say with your fancy tech talk?  Remember the only computer course I took used punch cards Grin

bitquick no longer takes customers from NY Tongue

That's because they're a centralized entity subject to NY laws. A decentralized computer program would not have that problem.

Edit: I actually wouldn't be surprised if OpenBazaar is used by some people as an exchange. Come to think of it...maybe I need to work on an "exchange store" on there...

Yes, I was just passing on a small bit of info.

I just checked the OpenBazaar site, it's been a while since I last did.  It's "Opening Soon"  Grin Grin
At least they are still working on it after a lull.

papa_lazzarou,  I took your advice and tried exiting.  Like last time I typed exit and received the message "[node] Stop signal sent" along with a time stamp immediately followed by a message in green "Stop signal sent"  after which nothing has happened for an hour.  My Task Manager shows no activity for bitmonerod, no cpu or disk activity and memory is at 14.1 MB.  I have noted the last block synced and am now going to close it via the X and receiving the "exiting without saving message" in red.  At least this time I still have the folder with 0.9 in it.  The log folder is empty Huh
Someone reported that he typed 'exit' again after the first one and it worked.

Thank you Smiley

I just restarted the daemon, let's see what happens.
1116  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: October 15, 2015, 11:37:13 AM
well, they had plenty of time already to acquire 'institutional' clients, since it is not because the website launches that they did not prepared upstream for important users to use the platform, even before any public launch.. anyway.

agree that interesting times lies ahead.

i get this feeling the rest of the financial world, as it obsessively misdirect people into 'blockchain technology' propaganda, is on the edge here and things are accelerating somehow as the end of the year approaches. will their status quo stand a couple more year? hard to say.
I was actually talking about the exchange itself. It takes time to accumulate volume and for the service to mature. I'm just hoping that there are no errors or bugs that would harm them so early. Besides, you have to remember the amount of time it takes to verify an account and transfer money to the exchange.

It would be nice if the price went up even higher.

The absurd "Regulated Exchange" era of Bitcoin is nothing more than a millimetre thin geologic layer in the advance towards domination.

Bitcoin price will surge at some point, and neither regulations, institutions, governance or whatever other deluded mass-marketed socialist businesses will have anything to do with it, ever.

A decentralized exchange could do more for Bitcoin than a regulated exchange. I'd rather use a decentralized exchange and trust nobody with my Bitcoins than use some regulated exchange that requires KYC, fingerprint samples, blood samples, and an iris scan just to register. There are masses of people who don't trust the unregulated exchanges, but don't want to go through KYC to use fully regulated ones.

Can someone remind me, how is fiat dealt with on a decentralized exchange?

Maybe it would be like localbitcoins or bitquick, but without the centralized website.

Have not followed the decentralized exchange topics though.

bitquick no longer takes customers from NY Tongue

OK I'm trying the windows 0.9 beta again.  I once again created a new folder for it as the last one disappeared after I closed the daemon without exiting as it hung up when I tried to exit after the syncing hung up.  I am currently syncing the blockchain from scratch as I did the first time and this time it started from ~ block 376206 so maybe it was stored somewhere?

It seems obvious but I want to check to make sure I don't mess anything up.  Once the daemon syncs I can then open any simplewallet I have?  And transact with it?

Blockchain is stored in %ALLUSERSPROFILE%. You definitely aren't syncing from scratch if it started from 376206. Smiley

Yes to your last two questions (unless there's some compatibility issue that I don't know about, but why not just use the matching 0.9 simplewallet?).

Thank you luigi,

I let it run while sleeping and now I'm on block 307986  Shocked and it's syncing almost as slowly as 0.8.8.6  Tongue
I'm no longer getting all the white words including "blob" speeding by but instead it's mostly the yellow lettering I'm used to when syncing with the white lettering being NOTIFY_REQUEST_GET_OBJECTS................
Hope you are enjoying the technical description Grin

As far as simplewallet I meant using simplewallet in 0.9 and using the name and password that was set up in 0.8.8.6

I was just taking a tour around the pools and see that dwarfpool lists their top 20 miners.  4 of the addresses start with Poloniex.com and one with Bittrex.com.  I take it that these are mining directly to the exchanges for selling.  The top 2 miners on dwarfpool each have over 15x the hash rate of #3 and one of those is a Polo address with a HR of 835KH/s.  The network is at 12MH/s so that one miner has 7% of the network HR and I assume this will all be sold.  All 5 of the exchange addresses listed = 920KH/s or 7.67% of the current network HR.
