they can exist without a whitepaper if they are in a very early stage of development, but if they are already halfway through the scheduled launch date and don't have a white paper that's a big flaw and quite suspicious for me. because any serious project has to have the whitepaper ready in the announcement to attract future investors with their vision

Whitepaper for me is the backbone of any ico project because whitepaper is the thing that a project write their ambitions, vision, mission, roadmap, etc. It is very important in my own opinion because it is similar to a business plan. You don't wanna invest unto something that does not have future development plans right ? stay away from those kind of ICO's co'z They are probably scams.

I think you're right. Personally, when I joined the ICO, I was very interested in the whitepaper of the project. I am really afraid of joining ICOs without a whitepaper, they are not credible

But what about those trying-to-be-legit icos that have a whitepaper yet turned out scams? They try to look legit so they can lure the people to invest in their project. IMO, if an ico really tends to scam people then it will be, no matter how attractive their project neither the team.

I'm not saying without whitepaper is good nor we should be more extra cautious in choosing. Remember that before, bitcoin doesn't have a whitepaper too and it came up when it's already in the market.
