822  Other / Politics & Society / Timothy Draper, Silkroad Auction winner, plans to cut California into 6 states on: July 15, 2014, 06:05:24 AM
Quote
(Reuters) - A long-shot effort to break California into six separate states got a boost on Monday, when the billionaire venture capitalist behind the proposal said he had gathered enough signatures to place it on the ballot in two years.

Timothy Draper, a founder of a Silicon Valley-based venture capital firm that has invested in Twitter, Skype and Tesla, among other companies, has been agitating for months for a ballot initiative to chop the most populous U.S. state into smaller entities.

"It’s important because it will help us create a more responsive, more innovative and more local government, and that ultimately will end up being better for all of Californians," said Roger Salazar, a spokesman for the campaign. "The idea ... is to create six states with responsive local governments - states that are more representative and accountable to their constituents."

Salazar said Monday that the campaign had gathered more than the roughly 808,000 signatures needed to place the measure on the November, 2016 ballot. Draper and other supporters plan to file the signatures with California Secretary of State Debra Bowen on Tuesday.

But the plan has raised bipartisan hackles across the state, and opponents say it stands little chance of gaining voter approval. If it does win the support of voters, it must still be passed by Congress, which opponents say is also unlikely.

823  Other / Politics & Society / Re: CNN national poll: Rand Paul 13%, Bush 13%, Ryan 12%, Huckabee 10%, Christie 9% on: July 15, 2014, 05:35:13 AM
There is very little chance of Rand Paul winning the race. Even if he is ahead, the other "mainstream" Republicans such as Bush and Huckabee would gang-up together to defeat him.

I think that is only the case if the average voter is not truly educated on the candidates.  I think he is the best candidate from that lot for sure.  The least likely to play politics in important issues.  Even thought I'm skeptical of him he's the only one of them even close to change from the norm.

this is how i feel. but not just that.. being electable is one thing, and fundraising is another. if you're going to do what rand talks about, then he's going to have a lot of monied people against him.. either that, or he receives money from them and the same shit happens as with every president.
824  Other / Politics & Society / Re: CNN national poll: Rand Paul 13%, Bush 13%, Ryan 12%, Huckabee 10%, Christie 9% on: July 15, 2014, 03:39:46 AM
^ well that's the problem.. the GOP base is full of extremists. that makes it harder to get things done.. as mentioned before, the GOP nominee will have to go through a "i'm super conservative" primary cycle, and then when it comes to winning the general election votes, it's "i'm not a super right guy, i'm actually a centrist."
825  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Is anyone following the Israel & Palestine Situation. on: July 14, 2014, 11:15:28 PM
US news outlets are generally worthless when it comes to world issues. instead they talk about what miley tweeted.. seriously. i'm talking about CNN even.
826  Other / Politics & Society / Re: CNN national poll: Rand Paul 13%, Bush 13%, Ryan 12%, Huckabee 10%, Christie 9% on: July 14, 2014, 10:09:10 PM
will be more difficult the republicans down the line. if i had to choose who would get the nomination, it would be rand paul.

Conservatives are stuck in a perpetual outrage loop. The reappearance of Todd Akin, the horror-movie villain immortality of Sarah Palin, the unseemly celebration of the Hobby Lobby decision – these all speak to a chorus of "la-la-la-can't-hear-you" loud enough to drown out the voice of an entire generation. Late last week, the Reason Foundation released the results of a poll about that generation, the millennials; its signature finding was the confirmation of a mass abandonment of social conservatism and the GOP. This comes at a time when the conservative movement is increasingly synonymous with mean-spirited, prank-like and combative activism and self-important grand gestures. The millennial generation has repeatedly defined itself as the most socially tolerant of the modern era, but one thing it really can't stand is drama.

Republicans were already destined for piecemeal decimation due to the declining numbers of their core constituency. But they don't just have a demographic problem anymore; they have stylistic one. The conservative strategy of outrage upon outrage upon outrage bumps up against the policy preferences and the attitudes of millennials in perfect discord.

We all can recognize the right's tendency to respond to backlash with more "lash" (Akin didn't disappear, he doubled down on "legitimate rape"), but it seems to have gained speed with the age of social media and candidate tracking. The Tea Party's resistance to the leavening effect of establishment mores and political professionals has been a particularly effective accelerant. Palin's ability to put anything on the internet without any intermediary has rendered her as reckless as any tween with a SnapChat account. Akin's whiny denouncement of Washington insiders is likely to make him more credible with a certain kind of base voter. The midterms are, as we speak, producing another round of Fox News celebrities, whether or not they win their races: the Eric Cantor-vanquishing David Brat, Mississippi's Chris McDaniel and the hog-castrating mini-Palin, Jodi Ernst of Iowa.

827  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: PayPal Integrating Bitcoin soon. on: July 14, 2014, 04:20:47 AM
problem with paypal is that they don't have any real competition for what they do.. they are also tethered to ebay, so that means they get more clout over ebay transactions.
828  Other / Politics & Society / Re: World Economy 'More Fragile than Before 2007 Crash' on: July 14, 2014, 04:15:58 AM
you can't keep kicking the ball down the road. the longer you kick it, the bigger the explosion we'll see. looks like it might be the great depression 2.0. that would be pretty damn significant, and not just that, we could see our economic world dominance dwindle because of it. look at what happened after the first one... it led the way to make us the world's first superpower.

830  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Obama Wants $67,912 for Every Illegal Alien Minor on: July 13, 2014, 10:20:07 PM
So we create a crisis and then demand money to resolve it? How dumb do they think we are?

How many days are we down to until the next president takes office? Prince O is by far the worst president we have ever had.

the worst? i don't think so.. but he's horrible. the guy before him was the one who cut taxes and then sent trillions of dollars to iraq and pakistan.

3.7 billion for immigrants.. wtf is obama thinking? i don't even get what his angle is here.

it's funny how mccain has been wrong with virtually everything, and yet he still acts like he's some sort of foreign affairs expert.
LOL, yep ole stiffy is always trotted out there as some respected voice, usually about foreign affairs, but he's nothing more than a cheerleader for the military industrial complex and more death and destruction. Hence, he's always loaded w/ money for reelection.

well, i'm glad we can agree about something. here is the clown singing "bomb bomb iran" while trying to get the GOP nomination. http://youtu.be/o-zoPgv_nYg?t=38s

i'm really, really glad he didn't win in 2008.. he is one of the most bellicose politicians we have today. he wouldn't flinch at the thought of sending our troops abroad.

oh man, if he gets the nomination i know where to put all my money in vegas for the 2016 election. it would be hilarious though, so i wouldn't mind it. half of his campaign will be defending his level of intelligence.

Much of what I know about Rick Perry is based on his horrible performance in the debates last time around. Since then, he has claimed he was recovering from surgery (on his back?) and that he was affected by prescription drugs during the debates.

Either way, he is the guy who said "I am actually for gun control: Use both hands" (to better control the gun) and that is pretty funny.  Smiley

the lack of sleep/prescription shit is probably just a coverup for his low intelligence. he's also had "stadium prayers" in houston. yeah, they go to stadiums and pray for an improved economy and rain (a lot of drought happening in texas. they have no idea why, even though science shows it's climate change).

he's also had plenty of shady deals in the past, where his friend "bought" him real estate in a developing area.
834  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin and Craigslist on: July 13, 2014, 08:56:20 PM

835  Other / Off-topic / Re: Invest in silver or not? on: July 13, 2014, 07:34:45 PM
Nah, I think buying gold is better in the long run.. I got burned by litecoin so I am thinking silver might have the same effect.

you can't equate gold and silver to bitcoin and litecoin.. gold/silver are not just investments, they can actually be used for other things.
836  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: State of Bitcoin Q2 2014 Report on: July 13, 2014, 07:15:39 AM

Speaking of which, @Phinnaeus_Gage, the most prolific poster on this forum by far, has been absent in since 2014-06-17.  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=24792
People who miss him or not have been speculating https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=667460.0

840  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin and Craigslist on: July 13, 2014, 06:42:29 AM
I made one posting and I got a buyer for 100BTC in 24 hours.

Nice to get actual cash for bitcoin.

For real? I know that you are smooth trader. I've lurked and learned. Seriously though; you got a buyer on craigslist for 100BTC? Recently? Someone handed you $60someoddthousand for 100BTC off craigslist? I follow most of what you post and would like to know more about this.
I would say that this kind of post (on Craigslist) should be approached with extreme caution. You should really never deal in that large of amounts with a stranger.

yeah that sounds spotty.. i don't want to give that info out to strangers, could get robbed/kidnapped. it's like putting a target on your back.
