1301  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Bradley Manning Says US Public Lied to About Iraq War from the Start on: June 15, 2014, 06:31:37 PM
Quote
New York (AFP) - The detained US soldier convicted of leaking a trove of secret documents to WikiLeaks made a rare foray into public life Saturday to warn Americans they were being lied to about Iraq once more.

Chelsea Manning is serving a 35-year prison sentence on espionage charges and other offenses for passing along 700,000 secret documents, including diplomatic cables and military intelligence files, to anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks in the largest-scale leak in US history.

"I understand that my actions violated the law. However, the concerns that motivated me have not been resolved," the soldier formerly known as Bradley Manning wrote in a New York Times editorial.

"As Iraq erupts in civil war and America again contemplates intervention, that unfinished business should give new urgency to the question of how the United States military controlled the media coverage of its long involvement there and in Afghanistan."

President Barack Obama said this week he was "looking at all the options" to halt the offensive that has brought militants within 50 miles (80 kilometers) of Baghdad's city limits, but ruled out any return of US combat troops.

Obama has been under mounting fire from Republican critics over the swift collapse of Iraq's security forces, which Washington spent billions of dollars training and equipping before pulling out its own troops in 2011.

While the US military was upbeat in its public outlook on the 2010 Iraqi parliamentary elections, suggesting it had helped bring stability and democracy to the country, "those of us stationed there were acutely aware of a more complicated reality," Manning wrote.

"Military and diplomatic reports coming across my desk detailed a brutal crackdown against political dissidents by the Iraqi Ministry of Interior and federal police, on behalf of Prime Minister Nuri Al-Maliki. Detainees were often tortured, or even killed."

Manning, a former US Army intelligence analyst, said he was "shocked by our military's complicity in the corruption of that election. Yet these deeply troubling details flew under the American media's radar."

Criticizing the military's practice of embedding journalists, Manning charged that "the current limits on press freedom and excessive government secrecy make it impossible for Americans to grasp fully what is happening in the wars we finance."

Manning is serving out the prison sentence at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas and had requested a name change after court-martial proceedings revealed the soldier's emotional turmoil over sexual identity.

A US Army general denied clemency to Manning in April, upholding the 35-year sentence.

And so many Americans don't understand how censored the US press really is. I'm referring to the corporate press of course. I work at a hospital and I encounter upwards of a 100 different people every day and it really stands out how in the dark most of these drones really are.

the US media is absolutely censored, mainly because media magnates own them and it helps them and their friends make more and more money. i stopped even watching the media a few years ago.. got sick of the CNN bullshit.

i can't believe ryan is still actually popular. that guy has proposed some nefarious bullshit, not to mention he wanted to increase the defense budget by how many billions it was?

basically he wants to cut medicaid, but increase defense spending. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/04/02/us/politics/paul-ryan-budget.html
1303  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The Lack of Major Wars May Be Hurting Economic Growth on: June 15, 2014, 05:47:08 PM
the "defense" industry is large. republicans want to increase it to an even higher number, but i don't think that's going to happen any time soon. war is just a way of spending money, and when you can influence who wins the govt contracts, you make money that way. there are so many ways you can profit from war.
1304  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What's your percent chance that Bitcoin will be the "Myspace" of cryptos? on: June 15, 2014, 05:14:21 PM
bitcoin is not myspace, mainly because myspace was never as dominant as bitcoin. btc's infrastructure is way,  way more supported than myspace was.

1306  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Will a war start in Ukraine? on: June 15, 2014, 05:11:42 PM
russia can't compete in a war of attrition.. they don't have the resources for that. i do give them credit  for having the balls to try and start shit with the U.S. and europe though. they are honey badgers.
1307  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Have you personally seen a bitcoin millionaire? on: June 15, 2014, 06:23:06 AM
i wonder when we will hear of our first kidnapping for ransom (for bitcoins). it would make releasing your victim a lot easier, since you don't need to be in-person to make the bitcoin exchange.
1308  Other / Off-topic / Re: Blood fetish? on: June 15, 2014, 06:19:03 AM
Is this a thing?? I mean, i know some people like weird stuff. But i didn't knew that blood was attractive, i always thought of blood as a kinda horrible thing. I mean, seeing it outside your body rather than inside where it should be it's just gruesome.

everything is a thing. there are people who like to literally get shit on. someone you know is probably a freak, but you wouldn't know because everyone's got their own fetishes and secrets.

if you want a plan like this to work, you at least need to show pictures or videos of him, so they can empathize. otherwise, no one will give a shit for another random story .

vice episode last friday.. they covered police state surveillance, kinda trippy how they are just putting "eyes everywhere." at least in new jersey.

I saw that. Pretty creepy, like vegas casino cameras everywhere. Pretty soon the entire US is going to be like that. Hell your car will probably print out a ticket for you out of your dashboard when you accidentally run a red or break the speed limit.

yeah, we are more and more living in a police state. nothing else can explain why the middle class is getting poorer yet there is less crime.
1311  Other / Off-topic / Re: Blood fetish? on: June 15, 2014, 04:59:12 AM
don't those kind of people turn into cutters? it sounds kinda creepy, but i try hard not to judge.
1312  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What would be your SR auction bid? on: June 15, 2014, 04:42:38 AM
so if you don't win any auctions, they keep your $200k? that's pretty fucked up.. you'd have to at least post 1 bid at market value -200k.
1313  Other / Off-topic / Re: NHL Stanley Cup Final 2014. Who do you want to win and why? on: June 15, 2014, 04:01:21 AM
Hopefully the Kings can close it out Friday. If not, look out!  Shocked

What a game! It was great to see my Kings close it out and win the cup for the 2nd time in 3 years. Hats off to king Henrik for a terrific series. He kept the Rangers in each and every game.

Yeah such a crazy game. The Kings were definitely the team of destiny this year after coming back from being down 0-3 games in that early series.  I think the goalie should have gotten the MVP though!

how often does that happen in hockey? sounds like more often than in basketball.. i don't think any team in the nBA has come back from 0-3.
1314  Other / Politics & Society / How to Get More From Police Self-Surveillance: Don't Turn It Off on: June 15, 2014, 03:42:03 AM
the numbers show that there are fewer and fewer crimes being committed, while the middle class/poor segment of the population are growing. it's probably due to this:

1315  Other / Off-topic / Re: Should I sell 2 BTC to take hubby to the Kings Stanley Cup game for anniversary? on: June 15, 2014, 03:26:43 AM
Did you end up going to the game? It was a pretty awesome game, and i don't even follow hockey. Pretty cool that the Kings closed out at home!

We did not go after all.  The price never went lower than $700 per ticket and we could not bring ourselves to pay more than $500 or at max, $600 per ticket, especially when a win was not guaranteed.  Also, it was completely depressing when we spent 2K to go in 2012 only to have the Kings lose the game we went to (they ended up finally winning game 6 but we had spent so much going to game 4 that we could not go to the game they actually won the cup at).

Losing another game like that would have been really hard to deal with.  We do not have that kind of money to blow.  Maybe when Bitcoin hits $10,000+?  Wink  Maybe then we can justify the price but we are not at that point of luxury yet.  Sad but true.  Hopefully the Kings will end up in the Stanley Cup finals again next year and we will be in a better place thanks to Bitcoin.  We will see.  That is a gamble too I guess.

even though he really wanted to, at least you guys have $1400 more in your pocket.

1317  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: US Marshalls auction SilkRoad bitcoins on: June 15, 2014, 03:19:14 AM
is it me or does it look like the FBI wants to give their friends coins on the cheap? it's like they're not going to even try to get the most out of the bitcoins they own..
No more for bitcoin than for any other merchanise.  It is not part of their mission to make a profit from sales of seized stuff.

Why do people think that the FBI views seized bitcoins any different from seized cash, gold, stocks, etc?

FBI guy:  How are we going to get rid of these things.
USMS guy:  How about 10 lots of 3,000 each, highest bidder, silent auction?  That will be the least amount of work for us.
FBI guy:  Sounds good.

That is probably pretty close to what happened.  Those FBI agents don't get a fee, they will get paid the same amount whether it sells high or low.  Like many government employees (actually like most people), they just want to do the least amount of work possible.

as i mentioned, they could have wealthy friends (i mean, come on, they are in the FBI) who could use a little insider info to make profits from buying these bitcoins cheap.
1318  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Dev Sells 50% of his Bitcoin due to 51% threat. on: June 15, 2014, 01:59:44 AM
we don't like the foundation because they're trying to speak for us, when they are an obviously fuckedup/disorganized org. to make matters worse, they are probably just figuring out how to become a major player among the bitcoin community, so they can benefit themselves only.
1319  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: US Marshalls auction SilkRoad bitcoins on: June 15, 2014, 01:56:44 AM
is it me or does it look like the FBI wants to give their friends coins on the cheap? it's like they're not going to even try to get the most out of the bitcoins they own.. and are they going to disclose who buys them at what price, or is that private?
1320  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Can we all write to FBI asking not to sell bitcoins but hodl them? on: June 14, 2014, 03:02:30 AM
I dont see too much of an issue with this. It's a private auction with the coins, not a exchange selling them off. If they went to an exchange to do this, I would be very concerned, but with a private auction it creates a sale outside of the BTC ecosystem and should have little effect on the price aside from speculator fears.

It doesn't matter if the mass amount of coins are sold on exchange, or privately. It'll eventually trickle down to the market. Sure the FBI isn't originally dumping it on an exchange, but there is no guarantee that the auction winner will not in turn dump it on an exchange or hold them.

it'll still be a net positive if the auction draws massive whales that would otherwise not have dipped their feet., something like an impetus for wallstreet to join the game. but no one knows whether that will happen or not.

Perhaps large whales or wall street will join, but they will not be buying from the current pool of available bitcoins, which has no positive effect on driving prices up. They buy directly from FBI, which has a potential of crashing the price afterwards.

whales are called whales for a reason, and wallstreeters play big. they would start buying bitcoins, not just from the FBI.. as investments.
