1621  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is Monoprice going to accept bitcoin soon? on: June 05, 2014, 11:46:50 PM
isn't monoprice a chinese company that sells accessories and cables? either way though, doesn't seem like they get enough volume to be of any real news. we're all hoping for a gamechanger like amazon, ebay or facebook.

Seriously, there should be a statement that you agree to when you first open a web browser the first time.  One of the stipulations being, you don't believe anything you read on the rag known as the huffington post.  All they do is publish useless articles with click bait headlines.

i like huffpo more than i do most other media outlets.. like nbcnews, msnbc, cnn, whatever. they at least post links for shit that's a legitimate concern.
1623  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: "We've been working to pay attention to bitcoin" -EBay CEO on CNBC on: June 05, 2014, 11:12:06 PM
This would be revolutionary for Ebay.   Sellers could theoretically have an option to set a price for fiat, and a separate price for BTC.

Still unsure how they would handle chargebacks and returns though?

I think ebay would make you host the transaction on their system. This ensures that they can keep the buyer protection thing and still get their cut as well.

Yes, you are probably right.  Maybe when you pay with BTC, they will have a checkbox, that you have to click that acknowledges that the purchase is a final sale or something like that...

they would probably have to use an escrow system, much like silk road does. otherwise someone could just take your money and run.

Must be them sleepwalking Chinamen, eh?

I found some archival material of Jorge performing some early research into the Chinese Slumber Method

You can tell that this picture is a feigned Chinese slumber method b/c Jorge is giving us the finger, while he is supposedly slumbering.

maybe he held it that way because he hurt himself while trying to use the zipper.
1625  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Who would you be allowed to marry in Israel today? on: June 05, 2014, 11:07:59 PM
i kind of find it funny how when you bring up some of the atrocities that come from israel, some people begin to point the finger at you like you are some anti-semite.

This is no accident - Israel, together with some right wing pro-Israeli Jews in the west, has been working very hard in recent years to perpetuate this notion that criticizing Israel is antisemitism. It's a beautifully planned and executed propaganda campaign, and it's working like a charm. This campaign is encouraging antisemitism around the world - which is exactly what Israel wants.

it's not just that, but christians love the jews because they are mentioned in the bible. saw a vice documentary recently and apparently christians spend lots of money in israel.

well, there are kids who are rebels without a cause.. they break rules because they think it's cool to be above the law.

i don't think that's the entire or even main reason though. i think part of it is peer pressure.. that's what did it for me at least.

I think that a lot of kids get into smoking as it is a social thing. For adults, a lot of people on nights out tend to smoke, or stand in smoking areas as it is a great place to socialise with people away from the loud music.

yeah, for some it's a social thing.. but most people can't control it. i envy those who can go with smoking a few cigs on the weekends only.

1628  Other / Off-topic / Re: Do You smoke? on: June 05, 2014, 10:43:31 PM

Why do you suppose kids smoke? Do you suppose its because they create a vin diagram and carefully laid out all of the pros and cons? Obviously not. Its obvious to anyone halfway reasonable that the reason kids smoke is because they aren't supposed to. Its the only rational explanation since smoking its self isnt rational without adding that consideration. You know cocaine used to be totally legal for anyone to buy. A 5 year old could buy as much of it as he wanted. Did we have a cocain epidemic when it was legal for anyone including kids to buy? absolutely not. The moment cocaine addiction began to appear is the moment it became illegal. This is what happens when you use violence to try to address complex social problems, it always achieves the exact opposite of its stated goal. In this case that means that making it illegal for kids to smoke means that more kids will smoke and smart public relations professionals, like the ones in the employ of the cigarette lobby, understand this very well. Frankly though i dont care if you believe me. You can believe what ever you want.

That's not true at all and is some seriously bizarre and twisted logic. I've never heard anyone make this point before. Kids don't just do things because they're illegal. There's many reasons they do, but being illegal probably isn't one of them. Why are they not all strung out on Class As? If they suddenly make cigarettes legal for children are they going to suddenly not want to bother with them?

1631  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Divorce's new weapon on: June 05, 2014, 09:52:44 PM
You do want to make sure you're buying the bitcoin well in advance of any troubles or divorce though.  If you have $100,000 in your bank account and suddenly it's gone and you claim you don't have any other assets, it's not going to work during divorce proceedings.

My Father in law is an attorney. They excel at finding that kind of stuff. You could only move currency in small amounts over a period of time.

What happens if you move it all over to bitcoin, keep it, but say you lost it all at an online bitcoin casino?  Never getting married but that would be my go to play.

Then you run the risk of gambling charges and perjury if they can prove otherwise.

You can always do the gamble from a jurisdiction where it's legal, a short vacation trip and some logs are enough to prove that

Do a 50/50 bet with the entire wallet. If you double your money, keep the profit yourself, share the original amount with your ex. If you lose, show the logs to the attorney and she gets 50% of zero.  Cheesy

Even better, marry in Germany where you can do a "church only" marriage: all the show but no legal ties. I have never understood why there is any payments after divorce anyways. The marriage is over and so should be all payments. If you quit your job you don't get a salary for the rest of your life, do you? Everything else is crazy and so are people who accept that sort of enslavement....

I think in one of the Nordic countries the law is such that divorce means, end of marriage, no mutual obligations of any kind. Social security or get a job...and you know what, suddenly men can risk marriage and having children again. Way to go!  Smiley

The feminazi movement in the US would never allow such a logical and sensible system.

No kidding.   Even the male judges in the US system heavily favor women.   Even druggy women...

oh man, this topic is starting to move into /r/mensrights on reddit. i kind of agree though. if i were wealthy before getting into a marriage, i'd definitely ask for a pre-nup.
1632  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I am pretty confident we are the new wealthy elite, gentlemen. on: June 05, 2014, 09:50:43 PM
even if i were ultrawealthy, i don't know if i could live it up quite like a few of you guys would do it. i'd probably just have a normal sized house, and the only luxurious thing i would have is maybe a tesla.. the $40k model  Cheesy

The smart ones will never touch the principle, and only spend the investment income that is left over after a certain level of reinvestment required to keep investment income growing with (real) inflation. You actually need quite a bit of money to do this.

Real wealth buys someone time and freedom from having to work ever again, which frees one to pursue interests and life endeavors as they come and go. Time is the measure of wealth, not houses, cars, vacations, etc.

well, if your intention in life is to "live it up," that could be a problem.. and i'm thinking a lot of people are like that. especially when they feel like their money wasn't earned.
1633  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Forced to stay on life support -- yes, no, maybe? on: June 05, 2014, 09:37:14 PM
the best decision is to think of what that person would have chosen given if he/she were conscious enough to make a decision. forcing someone to live as a vegetable because "it's the right thing" is kind of messed up.
1634  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: "We've been working to pay attention to bitcoin" -EBay CEO on CNBC on: June 05, 2014, 08:49:08 PM

you are ignoring the difference in price though. if a competitor decided to charge significantly less, there would be more people who would use their service, because they either get more by selling their goods on ebay, or the people buying get better prices. a competitor would be nice, because then at least ebay might start playing nicer.. at least if they can't eliminate their competition.

I'm saying it's a classic monopoly catch-22. A competitor can't offer enough value to sellers/buyers unless it has significant volume, and it can't achieve such volume without offering the value to buyers/sellers. Again, I'd still sell on ebay if there was a competitor with 0% fees, and I still buy on ebay without bothering to check the various smaller auction sites regularly...it's just not worth the time. This is the type of market where the first one in wins (at least for quite a while). Ebay won this battle in the late '90s.

that, or a big tech juggernaut with a reputation of being disruptive could jump into the game. google is known to be like this, and they already have access to hundreds of millions of people. they could hit hard if they swing, but i'm not sure if they are really interested in taking down ebay.
1635  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: "We've been working to pay attention to bitcoin" -EBay CEO on CNBC on: June 05, 2014, 08:41:43 PM
...
i really do hope there is a competitor to ebay.. i remember reading about some site that does online auctions like that too.

A viable/sizable competitor to ebay is actually unlikely. Ebay's core business has fantastic dynamics. Classic network effect. As a seller, it makes sense to me to pay their 10-13% fees versus a theoretical competitor that offered 0% fees, simply because I get *far* more visibility and bids, more than covering the fees. As a buyer, I have far more options on ebay versus a competitor, so unless I want to spend a bunch of time searching tons of tiny competitors, I'll just stick with where all the sellers are.

It's like bitcoin vs altcoins... Each new entrant has incentive to join the biggest network, thus making that network stronger, and in turn, the value prop of that network greater for the next guy. Such things build upon themselves rapidly. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metcalfe's_law

if this did happen, there'd still be an issue with our human being with an earth-like immune system.. they'd be in a new ecosystem and would be exposed to diseases that their bodies are not prepared to fight against.
1637  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: "We've been working to pay attention to bitcoin" -EBay CEO on CNBC on: June 05, 2014, 08:32:26 PM
If this news is confirmed there will be a huge increase in the adoption of bitcoins worldwide (and therefore of its value).

Well it is the CEO that said so it seems pretty confirmed. This is a big step in taking our currency main stream.

I haven't sold on ebay in a while. I'll be both a happy seller and buyer when ebay-paypal lets me pay/receive bitcoin.

The huge benefit to ebay versus other companies/merchants accepting bitcoin is the two-sided nature of it. It'll act as another mechanism for people (sellers) to acquire bitcoin. Far more of a closed loop than a big retailer simply accepting bitcoin.

And given the hints that both Donahue and David Marcus have been dropping over the past 6 months or so, I'd say the chances of this actually happening are decent.

i really do hope there is a competitor to ebay.. i remember reading about some site that does online auctions like that too.

We tried also with electronic cigarettes but without success, luckily she smoke only 4-5 small/thin cigs a day.

E-cigs never did it for me. Vapor just doesn't feel the same. I do like vaporizing cannabis, and surprisingly it actually hits the spot most of the time. But e-cigs just never satisfied.

yeah i tried e-cigs, i remember them working for a time, but then i just said "fuck it, i'm getting a cigarette." it's also a pain in the ass having to maintain the cartridges, and i often had to buy new ones after using them for a few days. so it ended up costing more than cigs.
1639  Other / Off-topic / Re: Do You smoke? on: June 05, 2014, 06:57:39 PM
yeah i do 4 or 5 cigs a day, something i'm not really proud of.. but it's just another thing that has me addicted. i've tried quitting, but my will is too weak
1640  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BTC In Afghanistan? ... it's 100% ripe right now on: June 05, 2014, 06:56:30 PM
I can see the headlines now: 'Bitcoin funds al qaeda'

I agree. Unfortunately it would do more harm than good to push Bitcoin in Afghan right now. The government is in talks with the Taliban who may soon be power-sharing.

Sub Saharan Africa and small independent States are better options if you are trying to encourage Bitcoin use as a major part of a country's economy.

The US government would probably love it to be able to publicly tie BTC and cryptos with funding Al Qaeda.  That would give them so much smear campaign potential that it isn't even funny...

well, if i were a lobbyist for mastercard or paypal, i'd try to plant this story and shit on bitcoin. it would make my argument much more effective.
