1801  Other / Politics & Society / Re: US trains Syrian rebels in Qatar on: May 29, 2014, 07:03:27 PM
geopolitical interest of both the US and Russia are on the line, Syria is one of the only Russian allies and big customer in the region and the US want them out and want to put a puppet leader to control the country, and the big loser here sadly is the Syrian population .....

that's basically the american business model for the middle east. come in, conquer, set up one of your guys, and the exploit the shit out of the people. i don't support terrorism, but this is part of the reason why there are so many radical extremists who are hell-bent on bombing us. seems like there are generally more muslim kooks than your average religious people, but i bet a lot of the al queda sympathizers are just people who have had their families blown to bits.
1802  Other / Off-topic / Re: Elliot Rodger Killed 7 and Wounded 7 on: May 29, 2014, 06:58:09 PM
I read his story a bit and If I didn't miss anything It's pretty much parents fault, that kid just needed help, like psychologist who would guide and give him suggestions on how to change his life. He just didn't have enough experience to understand that himself. There Is saying : Smart people will try to adapt to the world, unsmart people will try to change the world, thinking that their truth Is the only one and other people are wrong. And even worse is to wait till the world will "change" doing nothing and that's what that kid did. He waited till his life will change while he just waits? He wasnt wide minded enough to change his life in to a happy life. He just needed someone to guide him and parents didn't get him to psychologist?

that's pretty unfair to just point the finger towards his parents. how do you think it would upend their lives knowing that their son has a mental illness? they can't babysit him 24/7.. even if they wanted to, he probably wouldn't let it happen and would likely act out.
1803  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Snowden should 'man-up' and face trial: says SOS John Kerry on: May 29, 2014, 06:56:54 PM
at least in Russia he's being treated as a human being.

Maybe, but sadly this courtesy doesn't extended to some of their own citizens, specifically homosexuals and feminist activists (not to mention their involvement in the Ukraine).

Has Snowden actually got a Russian passport now, or has/will he be granted citizenship? I wonder if he'll ever make his way to Cuba, but I'd probably rather stay in Russia where it's safer for him. Cuba looks a nice place to live though. Whatever happens I hope he can find some comfort/happiness in life. Pretty bullshit he'll most probably have to spend the rest of his life as a fugitive now.

would russia even let him leave? he has valuable information on not only the U.S., but other countries as well. it could be a strategic advantage for them to know this information.
1804  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Tests $600 on Strong US Volume on: May 29, 2014, 06:52:48 PM
It takes a really special kind of oblivious to write fluff pieces targeted to a clueless demographic, and post them to a Bitcoin message board!

well, yeah, the right might be kind of clueless.. but i don't think he said anything over the top or misinformed.
1805  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Avoid U.S. Taxes on Bitcoin. Give to Charity. on: May 29, 2014, 06:50:13 PM
i don't think i'm quite comfortable with donating via bitcoins.. it's irreversible, and someone can steal the bitcoins without being within my presence. there are just too many ways for scammers to scam with bitcoin.
1806  Economy / Economics / Re: OverStock Reported $1.6 Millions in Bitcoin Sales - WOW on: May 29, 2014, 06:39:46 PM
it's a nice start, but they do over $1 billion in sales a year, so even $10 million is only a drop in the ocean. i'm just hoping bitcoin's integration isn't too burdensome for them, so that they continue to do it.
1807  Economy / Speculation / Re: Why are psychics bearish on bitcoin? on: May 29, 2014, 06:37:04 PM
physicists, if you look throughout history, can be narrow-minded people who are entrenched in their old ways of thinking. the great ones usually come along and challenge the convention, like an einstein or newton. all of the best theoretical physicists are usually artistic-minded people too. einstein plays musical instruments, and i think sean carroll does as well.
1808  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Avoid U.S. Taxes on Bitcoin. Give to Charity. on: May 29, 2014, 06:33:47 PM
With all the moaning and complaining about the impact of the recent IRS statement on the tax-ability of bitcoin, most have overlooked one good outcome of this clarification. One that hopefully will unleash even more philanthropy in our bitcoin community.

Under current IRS guidance, dispositions (sales and spendings) of bitcoin are a taxable event. Bitcoin is property and when it's sold or spent, an individual must calculate the gain or loss on that transaction and report it as a capital gain or loss on his/her Federal Income Tax filing.

Except for this: Bitcoin that has been held for more than a year and gone up in value can be donated to a recognized charity without having to report any taxable gain to the IRS; what's more, one can take a deduction for its full market value at the time of donation. Donations of appreciated bitcoin held a year or less are still deductible, but their gains in value must also be recognized (and taxed).

This often overlooked fact turns a significant negative into a strong positive. Don't sell or spend profitable long-term holdings of bitcoin. Inasmuch as you can, donate them to charity and buy yourself a double tax break with your generosity.

There is a long section on Contributions of Property found here: http://www.irs.gov/publications/p526/ar02.html#en_US_2013_publink1000229703

Here you'll find more specific information in the sections Giving Property That Has Increased in Value -- Ordinary Income Property & Capital Gain Property: http://www.irs.gov/publications/p526/ar02.html#en_US_2013_publink1000229755

The IRS Guidance Summary is here: http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/IRS-Virtual-Currency-Guidance

Example: Let's say in 2014 you have taxable income of $100k and thus you were in a 25% marginal tax bracket; and you itemize deductions on Schedule A. You have $3000 worth bitcoin (present value) to sell/spend or donate; for those coins, you paid $1000 more than a year before.

If you sell or spend those bitcoin, you will pay $300-560 in Federal taxes ($2000 gain X 15-28%), depending on what tax rate is applied. And you might also pay state income taxes; at say 5%, that's another $100.

If you donate the $3000 worth of bitcoin to a charity, you pay no Federal or state tax, and you pick up a tax benefit of $750 in the Sch A deduction of $3000; that is, $3000 X 25%.

Ok, so I do a bunch of work, spend a gazillion dollars to gain a ton of Bitcoins and then give them all away so I don't have to pay taxes?

Are you on drugs?

I think the point is that you can donate some of your bitcoins and then use that as a deductible to lower your taxes on whatever fiat you make, thereby 1) Doing a good deed and 2) Giving yourself a tax break on your 9-5'er income.

Sorry, Charlie!

ALL of my income is derived online.

I utilise proper business setups to minimise my taxes but do not have nearly enough money to engage in philanthropy.

There are very few Andrew Carnegie types in the crypto world.

there are very few carnegie types in the world, period. and if you are extremely wealthy, it is more likely that you are crude and don't give a fuck about others.. it's about climbing the ladder after all.
1809  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Events that changed the world... on: May 29, 2014, 06:29:29 PM
I think the invention of firearms was one of the greatest events that changed history. Think about it, before firearms, people have to fight in close range. And it was very hard to kill people. But once guns are widely used in warfare, the number of casualties have sharply increased and wars keep getting bigger and bigger.

It is also now much easier to kill people and commit crimes with guns.

i fail to see how it was one of the "greatest" events. all it led to was an easy conquest and domination over people who did not have the technology.
1810  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BTC or LTC will replace Paypal some day? on: May 29, 2014, 06:27:40 PM
I think BTC or LTC never replace Paypal
because Paypal is Good for Currency and Safe
But BTC or LTC we don't know 10 years ago is still safe or no

oh man, your opinion will be very unpopular here. paypal is not good for currency. they are one of the companies that would probably eliminate competition if it were possible, in order to be the only guy around.

tila tequila, a fellow vietnamese compatriot of the OP, was a hot topic on reddit last night. turns out she has the classic symptoms of schizophrenia. she seemed really paranoid about the government and other conspiracies, and it reminds me of actor tom truong. he is a schizo if it turns out he's not actually a troll.

have a look at her statements on the illuminati https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5lVSCWdxYVk

I'm not sure whether you're joking or not? Hard to tell with some users on here, especially when some people actually believe that false flag gun conspiracy crap.

welcome to america m8, land of the kooks and gunslingers. a lot of them are republicans and live in rural areas.. just like cliven bundy.
1813  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Its shocking and depressing to read BOTS made bitcoin boom! on: May 29, 2014, 08:22:21 AM
depressing? i'd say yeah.. but shocking? nah, i am desensitized to that shit, but the madness happens every day.
1814  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Snowden should 'man-up' and face trial: says SOS John Kerry on: May 29, 2014, 08:17:57 AM
Yep, a real patriot would come back to be assasinated.

nah, they are not that kind. probably will have to torture him. for instance, isn't some of the information on how they are treating bradley classified?

maybe if they're brave enough, they'll torture him and leak out information that they did, to set a precedence for any future offenders that if they rat out the US gov, then they will wish for their death.
1815  Other / Off-topic / Re: Elliot Rodger Killed 7 and Wounded 7 on: May 29, 2014, 08:12:28 AM
it's such wasted opportunity.. he was a good looking dude and son of a director who is wealthy.. damn, a normal functioning kid in his position can have it all really.

You're really starting to sound like you've got the hots for him  Cheesy. What's the biggest tragedy here? The killings or that fine piece of ass he just wasted? Haha.

man, i don't have the hots for him.. i just want to be him. having a rich dad, who probably hangs out with celebrities... i'd make charlie sheen look like a panzy.

btw, i've seen you use the word "whilst" a few times and i was thinking to myself "why the fuck does he say whilst? who actually uses that word?" and then i realized you were british.
1816  Other / Off-topic / Re: Favourite Bitcointalk member on: May 29, 2014, 07:55:23 AM
can't say i have a favorite, but i think after spending some time with certain people, you can get a feel for how you'd get along if it were in real life, and there are a few people i think i would get along with.
1817  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: eBay will go bankrupt in 10-15 yrs, and Bitcoin will be largely to blame on: May 29, 2014, 07:52:29 AM
If ebay fails as a business model it will fail because of outrages fees, a broken feedback system, or a competitor, not because of a currency.

Not to mention they are already preparing to embrace Bitcoin. How they will implement it will be interesting to see, but I don't think Bitcoin has anything to do with killing eBay or PayPal. If anything it will help strengthen their marketplace.

i wonder if there's an actual userbase that would be open to dealing with bitcoin through ebay. i know most of us early adopters are completely against paypal/ebay, but there are future btc users who might use their services.

eBay/PayPal are mainstream, whereas Bitcoin isn't. That means they have a MASSIVE market to bring Bitcoin to and they will achieve that easily. The question is more along the lines of how badly they will hurt Bitcoin in the process (bringing it mainstream through those companies may not be what we want, but it's hard to tell. It's either going to be great or it's going to be one of the worst things to happen).

sure, but i can't foresee ebay integrating some function of bitcoin that fiat/credit cards can't do. maybe they'll come out with some great ideas.
1818  Other / Off-topic / Re: death of a star?? on: May 29, 2014, 07:51:03 AM
I just saw a star die, i was smoking a cig and looked up and noticed a star was bigger and brighter than normal, then it turned blue, then red, then it shrunk quickly and completely disappeared from the sky, does nasa have a way to confirm this?
IMAO no way light can travel that fast to you to even see it with the naked eye like that buy I could be wrong.  I see  stars turn colors all the time from glares.  which star was it, you should be able to read it from the constellations

God people are stupid around here.  Light travels at 186,000 per second.  What does it matter if you are a block away or 25 light years?  The light still travels at that speed.  You are not seeing the event in "real time", just the time it took for light to travel to you.  In fact we can see star light from 13.5 billion years ago (estimated age of the universe)  And if you had read the thread, I posted a link showing that you can in fact see a star explode with your naked eyes.

http://www.space.com/22453-nova-delphinus-star-explosion-naked-eye.html

haha, you said what i thought but didn't want to say out loud. i don't even understand what he's talking about... light not being fast enough to see? i.. don't know.
1819  Other / Politics & Society / Re: "No Way To Prevent This," Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens on: May 29, 2014, 07:49:42 AM
to me, the american mentality is really off.. our gun culture is pretty fucked up, and even though guns aren't the ones who ultimately kill people, it's for some reason entrenched in our culture to own guns and lots of them. there is no other developed nation that has close to the gun violence that we do.
1820  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Favorite political figure? on: May 29, 2014, 07:47:37 AM
Mine is Adolf Hitler, he was an inspiring figure and a one that can act on his dreams. He was a great leader all the way to his death.

The person who triggered the WW2 is your hero? Some 60,000,000 people died during the WW2, which was at that time close to 3% of the world's population. All this because Hitler wanted to invade Poland.

he's obviously joking around.. either that or he's an aryan german who dreams about the rebirth of the reich.
