1381  Other / Politics & Society / Re: US Government Defies Court Order & Destroys Evidence of NSA Spying on: June 07, 2014, 11:31:12 AM
Not surprising at all. At the same time moonbats like John Kerry are asking for Russia to deport Snowden back to the United States. What is the point in coming back to the US, to face the jury, when even the jury is powerless?

I think John Kerry needs to retire, nobody takes him serious anymore:

"John Kerry caught sleeping during press conference in poland"
"Sen. McCain plays poker as Kerry argues for military strike against Syria"
"John Kerry Accuses Edward Snowden of Helping Terrorists"

I think Satoshi is NSA or something like this.
In many countries there is trend to get rid of cash.
Many ppl don't like whole "money printing" idea.
So some government had this idea: let's create digital gold to cater for those who don't like printing money.
And during the proccess... they printed even more money.
Result: users are happy, government is happy - win-win situation.

Doubt the government would do something so sensible as return to honest money.
Why would they put money in the hands of value producers when they can print money?

Secret services have been very busy with dragnet surveillance lately, basically they want to own all the data, any time, anywhere.  I do not think 'a decentralized money system' fits right in with that.

i don't know how pussy riot shoving dead chickens up their vaginas...

This stuff still disgusts me. A combination of necrophilia and animal sex. Video link should have a word of warning (other than NSFW)

1384  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Secret Service Wants Software That Detects Sarcasm On Social Media on: June 06, 2014, 11:00:00 PM
Now that is one of the hardest coding jobs I could think of
Akin to having a smart AI that can detect lexicon patterns and then filter them into common remarks and sayings then take the variants of those sayings to create an algorithm that detects the probability of any set of parameters being met to detect sarcasm
Within the context of a long conversation increasing the error rate.

I guess it could be done but efficiently from A to B might take merging a few technologies
We do have Intel's Watson system so Sarcasm is just a step away.

Indeed, this is an expensive project in terms of development time (and cost). The algorithm would be experimental, so its going to have quite a few errors.

TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

It seems there is something in the news every day about gun violence. The recent mass shooting in Isla Vista, California, a movie theater riddled with bullets in Colorado, children and teachers gunned down at school in Connecticut, and the list goes on. While you may be seeing more and more shooting, the fact is, overall gun homicide rates have dropped dramatically over the past two decades, according to a recent study.

More than half of Americans believe gun violence has increased over the past two decades, but what you’re watching on the news, may be skewing your view.

That recent study said compared to 1993, the peak of US gun homicide, the rate was 49 percent lower in 2010, even though the population had grown. In other words, fewer people are dying by guns.

Assaults, robberies, and sex crimes also went down by 75 percent in 2011. Perhaps images from shooting crime scenes seem all too familiar, but perhaps the attention to gun violence in recent months has caused more Americans to be unaware that gun crimes are actually markedly lower than they were two decades ago.

There have been about two mass shootings per month in the US over the past five years, according to another report. A mass shooting is constituted as four deaths or more, but this study said each year less than one percent of gun homicides are from mass shootings. Between 1983 and 2012 there were 547 deaths from mass shootings. These shootings are highly publicized and the public is paying close attention.

“I don’t normally just read on it all the time, but when there’s a mass shooting or something like that and it’s big on the news, yes I do read about it and I take part in online debates and stuff,” Anna Katrina Pecson, a Tyler resident, said.

No story received more public attention from mid-March to early April 2013 than the debate over gun control. Though, seeing is believing, numbers don’t lie.

The study also noted more than half of gun-related deaths are suicides. Researchers aren’t sure why gun violence has gone down so drastically, but the study did note that the decline has slowed over the past decade compared to the rapid reduction in the 90’s.
Tell the MSM and the progressives to put that in their pipe and smoke it.

The actual study is at http://www.pewsocialtrends.org/files/2013/05/firearms_final_05-2013.pdf

Interesting study. The strange thing about the statistic is that the firearms deaths seem to be stable around 10.2 - 10.3 for the last 10 years.

It depends, if we're talking about the real feminists, I would actually argue that pussy riot fall into that category, because all they were doing was fighting for free speech and basic rights like that which I can agree with

Either you don't know much about the Pussy Riot, or you are having some real issues with yourself.  Grin

You might classify the video (given below) as an example for the Pussy Riot fighting for free speech and basic rights, but most of the people would classify it as a sign of mental illness.

..... Holy shit I didn't know about that, for fucks sake, where have all the real feminists gone?! >_< God fucking damnit! Fucking western propaganda >_<

Seriously, don't look at that video everybody LOL Tongue

I just realize about another modified western propaganda story  Shocked holy smokes, that's disgusting

Maybe they want it so they can stop arresting people for saying sarcastic or non-literal stuff on twitter etc.

This technology would not only be used for sarcasm, but for whatever you want to search for.

1389  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: US Government Bans Professor for Mining Bitcoin with A Supercomputer on: June 06, 2014, 03:50:03 PM
Quote
The researcher misused over $150,000 in NSF-supported computer usage at two universities to generate bitcoins valued between $8,000 and $10,000.

I'm skeptical both that they claim it used $150k in electricity and that it was able to mine that much bitcoin.  Most supercomputers are just a lot of standard CPUs.  Even if it had GPUs in there (like Nvidia Tesla which is used in some supercomputers) I would think the hashrate would still be significantly lower than a couple ASIC miners (and well below the quoted $8-$10k over 6 days.

Wow he did it for only 6 days and got caught?  You'd think being one of the brightest supposedly he would come up with a better plan wouldn't you?  to avoid being caught I mean.

One would think so. Maybe that is why he was working for the government instead of in the private sector.

I'm sure the geeks responsible for tech support noticed the bandwidth. They don't miss much those guys.

I think he didn't expect to be caught on the super computer, or, perhaps it was an experiment  Smiley
1390  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Who would you be allowed to marry in Israel today? on: June 06, 2014, 01:57:15 PM
what?? it's very complicated. so only both partners are jews who can marry in israel?

According to the chart this seems to be the case. Non religious can have some form of contract. The diagram does not display what the situation is if both people are of the same religion (other than Jewish). Can anyone clarify?

1391  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: New cryptocurrency conversion and portfolio app for Android on: June 06, 2014, 01:53:14 PM
The app looks very good, is it possible to modify the colors? I prefer a bit darker blue on white.
If so, I will install it.  Smiley
1392  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If bitcoin ever goes mainstream on: June 06, 2014, 01:20:42 PM
Mainstream is a pretty relative notion. In my opinion, I already consider it mainstream, as I use it everyday since.. a long time and a lot of my friends use Bitcoin as well.
So among my entourage is quite popular and mainstream, even more than PayPal Smiley.

I don't think we can call it anywhere near mainstream yet. It might be getting talked about in the mainstream but it's not been implemented yet.

I think we can call it mainstream when we see it on every single website. Still a path ahead, maybe in 4-8 years

By JAMES RISEN and LAURA POITRAS

The National Security Agency is harvesting huge numbers of images of people from communications that it intercepts through its global surveillance operations for use in sophisticated facial recognition programs, according to top-secret documents.

The spy agency’s reliance on facial recognition technology has grown significantly over the last four years as the agency has turned to new software to exploit the flood of images included in emails, text messages, social media, videoconferences and other communications, the N.S.A. documents reveal. Agency officials believe that technological advances could revolutionize the way that the N.S.A. finds intelligence targets around the world, the documents show. The agency’s ambitions for this highly sensitive ability and the scale of its effort have not previously been disclosed.

The agency intercepts “millions of images per day” — including about 55,000 “facial recognition quality images” — which translate into “tremendous untapped potential,” according to 2011 documents obtained from the former agency contractor Edward J. Snowden. While once focused on written and oral communications, the N.S.A. now considers facial images, fingerprints and other identifiers just as important to its mission of tracking suspected terrorists and other intelligence targets, the documents show.

Their precision is pretty accurate, but still they get a lot of false positives.

I removed all photos from my face book page a long time ago. I don't believe any images of me exist in cyber space. People said i was paranoid at the time.  Cool

They still exist. NSA gets a copy of the entire Facebook data center once in a while. Even photos of 12 years ago.

1394  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Chinese rumor group caused big price drop of Bitcoin on: June 06, 2014, 12:09:29 PM
will go drop more
china will ban forever

China bans bitcoin every month, again. I have read the same story about ban in February, March, April, May and June.
There are even jokes about it. All it shows is that bitcoin has an enormous potential and the Chinese government is afraid of that.

That will never ever happen. It might go up to 5k but that's it.
Between 2014 and 2034 there price may reach $10.000 per coin. 20 years is a long time in terms of technology.

I think Apple was interested in accepting Bitcoins only because of its growing value
and this fact confirms it

In late November 2013 each bitcoin was briefly worth about $1,000 (£596) but the value collapsed soon after.
Current exchange rates suggest each one is now worth about $650.

Exactly, initially they banned all virtual currency apps from their store. Now they allow it, as you cant just ignore a billion dollar market  Smiley I think its a matter of time before they will try to make their own crypto app
1397  Economy / Speculation / Re: When will BTC reach $50,000? on: June 06, 2014, 09:02:03 AM
Don't get me wrong, I would do cartwheels if BTC hit $50,000, but I realistically don't think it will ever get that high.

why not though, what is stopping this?  nobody thought we'd hit 1k so quick.   Something like ebay/paypal could set the stage.

50.000$ is no problem, it will take some time though. The market needs to grow about 100%  Smiley
1398  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Seriously? Printing HUMANS? on: June 05, 2014, 11:20:32 PM
Do we not have enough humans on this planet? And I know a few people who would be willing/able to volunteer to conquer space. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/06/05/printing-humans-colonize-space_n_5439073.html?ncid=txtlnkusaolp00000592

It may not be necessary to print humans in order to colonize another planet. Assuming of course, this would be at all possible. By the time we have this technology, many of the dead could be brought back to the living. If at all possible, it is not going to be anytime soon.  Sometimes these ideas do sound like someone just ate a few mushrooms  Smiley but its important for a scientist to keep open minded.

For colonizing you simply need a translation from point A to point B. Distances in space are in the many light years, but perhaps there is a way around the speed of light.
