2081  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Ransomware and Bitcoin on: September 24, 2021, 01:36:54 PM
the more restrictions there are the harder it is to do the crime and then catch the people doing it as well...
You have a point but until they could tackle the origin, all they'll be doing is catching their shadows; in other words, they're always one step behind [regardless of the imposed sanctions]!

There is one problem though, it is based on Russia, so not sure if US treasury can shut it down.
Exactly, I wonder why Chainalysis used that word in their blog post?!

The question is why US departement going to far? Suex OTC is on Czech and Russian, not US...
From their own words:

What I think might be the main reason:

  • Suex is also found to have received over $50 million worth of Bitcoin sent from addresses hosted at illicit cryptocurrency exchange BTC-e from 2018 through 2021, well after BTC-e was shut down by U.S. authorities for its own money laundering activity on behalf of cybercriminals.

Chainalysis categorized Ransomware, Scams, High risk exchanges, Darknet market and Mixers are high risk sources, I agree with all category except mixers. Though mixers could be used for Money laundering but not all coins mixed is illegal, it should be grey area.

https://i.ibb.co/0Gbhgvv/Screenshot-9.jpg
Unfortunately, they're not the only ones with that type of attitude towards mixers [e.g. AMLBot, Antinalysis and etc...].
2082  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: [SCAM ALERT] Fake Innosilicon store innosilicon.us.com on: September 24, 2021, 11:46:15 AM
I reported the website to Namecheap, but they didn't take any action and didn't even respond by updating me on the status of ticket. Is it possible that they do nothing for a phishing website hosted by them?
Unfortunately, yes! That's been the norm for the past few months [on average, they respond to two or three of my reports, out of ten], and since that's the only option to take that website down, then we've got no other choice but to hope they would do something.

We continue to report, maybe they will take action ...
It's great to see multiple users reporting it, but I wouldn't recommend a single user to submit repetitive reports [it'd probably annoy them].
2083  Local / Pamilihan / Re: Additional Requirement from CoinsPh on: September 24, 2021, 10:41:08 AM
Doon sa mga nagsabi na tinangal na nila ang pending status sa transactions nila, pwede pa confirm kung isang beses lang kayo nakatangap nun or may nakareceive ba dito ng ganun status para sa dalawang consecutive transactions?
- Don't quote me on this one pero sa tingin ko every time lumagpas ang total amount sa ₱50K and above, maghihingi sila ng mga ganyan information [I could be wrong].
2084  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2021-09-23] Twitter rolls out bitcoin tipping for iOS users via Lightning... on: September 24, 2021, 08:24:36 AM
In the above article, it mentioned "worldwide" but since the receiver still has to use Strike, then that defeats its purpose to a large extent [at least until they integrate it with something else]!

2085  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2021-09-24] UAE to allow crypto trading in Dubai free zone on: September 24, 2021, 07:24:22 AM
CMIIW: According to "this thread", BTCitcoin is legal in UAE, but for some reason, they were not allowed to trade it with other cryptocurrencies?

The only thing that doesn't impress me from the agreement in question is the fact that they've tied it to "Dubai free zone", as opposed to UAE as a whole, and on top of that, it looks like they have to obtain a license first [from SCA].
2086  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Trezor One, update 1.10.3 firmware failed (or not) on: September 23, 2021, 06:15:20 PM
someone had a similar experience
It looks somewhat similar to what I described in the "latter part of this" post.
- I forgot to mention the error that I got on the upper right corner of Suite for a split second.

  • Can you go to the Device tab [on Trezor Suite] and check the firmware version?
    - Are you seeing 1.10.2 by any chance [despite seeing or rather thinking that the latest firmware was installed after the restart]?

and should I be concerned for some future updates?
If something goes wrong, you always have the option of downgrading both "firmware" and the Trezor Suite version [assuming that you've at least kept one of its previous versions on your hard drive].
- I "temporarily" downgraded my Trezor Suite version last week [as a workaround to some of the bugs]!
2087  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Robinhood launching crypto wallets with commission-free trading on: September 23, 2021, 09:21:34 AM
There is a waiting list
I never imagined this day would come and we'll see a waiting list for a "custodial" wallet that comes from an exchange that has a dubious reputation!

We’re making crypto transfers safe, secure, and simple––whether you’re a long-time crypto trader, or one of the millions of people transacting on-chain for the first time.
I wouldn't be so sure about that [at least not for the end-users part].
- Not Your Keys, Not Your Coins.
2088  Other / Bitcoin Wiki / Re: Request edit privileges here on: September 23, 2021, 06:58:20 AM
???I think, this thread is no more responsive because it's been more than 2 months and no reply or any kind of response.
I still don't have any edit approval — it's been 2 months. How do I get it? Maybe I should contact someone else?
I would suggest requesting directly on the IRC channel [#bitcoin-wiki - Freenode] instead [you'll have a better chance in there].
- Having said that, I would recommend commenting in the following thread if it's just a minor edit: The Bitcoin Wiki Modernization Project - request changes and edits here
2089  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Trezor Suite- highly recommended on: September 22, 2021, 02:51:44 PM
Interesting, thanks for the info!
You're very welcome Smiley

Is there any reason I shouldn't be using the Trezor Suite now and just go back to using the website?
~Snipped~
Apart from experiencing cache problems occasionally, I don't see any other reason for switching to the web version, but having said that, depending on the features that other wallets offer, you can try using your Trezor device with those instead [e.g. Coin control on Electrum and etc...].
- I did notice the part that you mentioned Ethereum, but since I'm not that familiar with the type of features that other wallets offer for it, I didn't use it in the above example.
- Looks like the "Sign & verify" feature will be added to the Trezor Suite's upcoming version [based on the label, I think it'll be on "October 13"], so that's another reason to stick to Trezor Suite.
2090  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin wallet from Satoshi Nakamoto era activates after 9 years on: September 22, 2021, 01:25:26 PM
@btcwish1
I have to disagree with the headline of that article and the one on the subject field [Satoshi era].
- Satoshi's last forum activity was at the "end of 2010" while the owner of that address acquired those BTCitcoins at the "end of 2012".

The intention is still not clear and not sure how it will affect the upcoming price!
Despite moving it to a new address [after two transactions], it doesn't look like he/she wants to sell those [at least for now]!
2091  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Withdraw and stop using Binance on: September 22, 2021, 11:44:06 AM
I wonder, why suddenly there is so much pressure on Binance?
They paid the price for ignoring various warnings from the regulators and that led to them attracting way more attention than they should've had in the first place.

Maybe what could happen is that the owners of Binance could get arrested and charged but Binance would remain operational with stricter policies just like what happened in Bitmex.
This! Regulators just want a piece of the pie, so they would probably arrest and penalize involved employees and maybe even CZ [if there was insider trading and other stuff].

Actually, they have two domains so which one will be affected by this?
If this is only related to the US then the only affected are those who use Binance US?
Based on the fact that they're still looking for the location of their servers [they're still not sure if they could do something], then it's safe to say that they're "not" after the one with .us extension.
2092  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Is bybitglobal.com a backup site of bybit.com? on: September 22, 2021, 08:41:38 AM
Well, it does show up as bybit owned domain when entered in their authenticity checker, check for yourself: https://www.bybit.com/en-US/verification

https://i.imgur.com/VikHYAI.png

but it wouldn't hurt to double check and ask this using another channel, maybe in reddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/Bybit/)
I have looked all over the web and on their official site, but bybitglobal.com does not show up anywhere.
What @Potato Chips provided in the above post should be more than enough, but just to address the part I've bolded, you can refer to the following things:

  • Hover over the buttons on "this blog post" and you'll see all of them are linked to BybitGlobal and they even mentioned it in their fifth term [bottom of the page].
  • Their Co-founder [Ben Zhou] made the following "tweet" back in July.
2093  Other / Meta / Re: [POLL] Top 5 boards deserve most merits on: September 22, 2021, 07:32:35 AM
@Little Mouse
Without looking at any of the stats, my vote goes to both "Mining" and "Mining (Altcoins)" boards and sub-boards.
- Just to be clear, I voted those due to suffering from poor merit distributions, as opposed to the overall quality of the boards that deserve more merits!

all boards deserve active distribution of merits
Amen to that!
2094  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2021-09-21] U.S. to Target Crypto Ransomware Payments With Sanctions on: September 21, 2021, 06:06:50 PM
That means going after the digital wallets that receive ransom transactions, the crypto platforms that help exchange one set of blockchain coins for another to obscure the culprits and the people who own or manage those operations.
~Snipped~
The government hopes to choke off access to cryptocurrency in certain situations in a bid to limit the potential payoff from ransomware
Realistically, they could only target the cryptocurrency exchanges [centralized], as opposed to non-custodial wallets and most of the mixers. AFAICS, this only makes them shift to other routes [unfortunately, it'll have little to no effect on them]!

but it hurts to see people use it for money laundering and terror financing too.
All of us hate that part, but traditional methods are being used a lot more in those departments!
2095  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: [LIST] Bitcoin Seed Backup Tools on: September 21, 2021, 04:18:46 PM
I would add that probably best and cheapest way is to make your own DIY backup seed phrase, you just need to purchase stainless steel flat washers
~Snipped~
https://i.imgur.com/0c1gQ1a.jpg
https://www.econoalchemist.com/post/backup
You're right, it's indeed the cheapest one but I'm not so sure if it's the best one. I wish he [@econoalchemist] would've included the temperature at peak [he had a thermometer] and the exact time when it reached that level [the video appeared to be on x3, so it was probably less than 3 minutes at around "800 - 900°C"].

and people probably won't suspect what you are using this for.
But if there was a way to not include the seed numbers, it would've been a lot better.
- Sorry for nitpicking [I do know it's needed to not mess up the order].

I wonder what would have happened if he continued with the heat test for a few more minutes.
For just a few more minutes, I think we would still be able to read the letters but anything beyond 30 minutes [assuming that the temperature rises gradually] would probably result in those flat washers melting fast [Stainless steel melting points].
2096  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Bybit 2FA problem when trying to add address for withdrawal on: September 21, 2021, 12:43:22 PM
A message pops up to reset my 2FA

https://i.imgur.com/a6FWExd.png
Did you change any of the other settings [on the "Account & Security" page] before you tried to withdraw yesterday?

I did reset the 2FA, but the 2 FA reset message has continued to persist both on the mobile app and browser whenever I try to make a withdrawal.

Has anybody experienced this kind of problem before on bybit?
I'm not one of its users but the following two things might be the reason:

I think you would probably get a better response if you repost this on their "subreddit".
2097  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Inequalities increased due to current cryptocurrencies on: September 21, 2021, 10:33:26 AM
I am based in India and forget bitcoin we can't even get to have 24hours regular power supply to my home.
You're probably telling the truth, but I'm pretty sure I've seen a couple of miners [based in India] selling their rigs a few months back [I don't think what you're experiencing represents all parts of India].

If my internet connectivity is slow I am done.
You're wrong!
The amount of network bandwidth that's being used in mining operations is actually quite insignificant [a bad internet connection "might" lead to getting more invalid/rejected shares, but even with a good connection, you'd still get some of those from time to time].
- In other words, all you need is a reliable connection, as opposed to a high-speed one.

I can't afford to have expensive hardware for mining
Nobody is forcing you to buy those.

The system should also consider the time factor while distributing the coins. If a miner who was mining for long time with a low hash rate should be given high priority than a person who just got a coin.
What you just described there is exactly what most corrupt government officials do! They do little to nothing and still get paid ridiculous amounts for something that they didn't even do.
- Hopefully, I was able to clearly point out the flaw in your system.
2098  Other / New forum software / Re: Progress? We're waiting... on: September 21, 2021, 08:21:10 AM
I'm sure there are plenty of people here who can code AngularJS (myself included), so can't we just code it collaboratively?
Try to get in touch with "Cryptios" or just use "Coinbistro" to test and report bugs: Coinbistro.com - Epochtalk testing grounds

Why is it dragging for so long like this?
Here you go [I do know 2 years has passed since @theymos made that comment but I think, for the most part, they're still accurate]:
- I've highlighted the main parts.

  • ~Snipped~
The things blocking a transition from the current software to the new software are:
     - There hasn't been enough testing. I think that immediately after transition, a variety of small missed features, bugs, and performance issues would crop up. As a result, if the transition happened now (which is technically possible!), I'd expect the post-transition user experience to be poor for months while these things are fixed, which I don't want.
     - I am the only bitcointalk.org sysadmin and on-demand programmer, and I'm used to the current software. Furthermore, I need to frequently make changes to the current software, but each change I make might require alterations to Epochtalk, which is problematic.
     - The current PHP software, while ugly and sub-optimal in many ways, performs well, especially since I have extensively modified the backend to add features and improve performance. So I don't feel much urgency.
     - The data-transition procedure still has a few known minor bugs.

2099  Other / Meta / Re: Top reporters on: September 20, 2021, 03:36:10 PM
I wonder if someday there will be general statistics of reporters for the entire life of the forum? It would be interesting to look at this data.
We had one [all time reports] in both "2016 [top 50]" and "2017 [top 50]". Despite not being that active in the past year or two, it'd be really nice to see such stats again.
- Something along the lines of the "Merit stats" page, would probably result in more users becoming active in that department.
2100  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: SCAM REPORT ON playtipus111 ($30) on: September 20, 2021, 02:31:37 PM
@playtipus111 has not bothered to rever here.
I've tagged him/her [might help in getting his/her attention but don't get your hopes up].

I really want him to learn the lesson.
Since @playtipus111 hasn't been active since Sep 17 [archived], then I would suggest to wait until he/she logs in and see if @playtipus111 would respond. If he/she doesn't, then that's when you should "create a type 2/3 flag" and with enough support, it'll become active:
