Have no idea how many points each of them got last year so that is why I gave general example.
it does depends only on Djokovic until the end of the season, Medvedev won all tournaments until the end last season (Shanghai, Paris, Nitto Finals), so he cannot get new points, even if win everything again Djokovic is actually defending some 2000 points on these tournaments, Tokyo 500 win included, so he has to drop early-on on all tournaments to drop no.1 before the season end AO is the first possible place to drop no.1 IMO, he won it, Medvedev lost final, so in case that next year would be opposite, that is 1600 points on Medvedev to overcome

There are still 2 ATP masters 1000 tournaments that give quite a lot of points if Medvedev wins it, actually his win at the US Open will not necessarily make him able to win the remaining ATP 1000, only if that happens the point difference with Djokovic will be smaller and his chances of replacing Djokovic are very likely, however Djokovic's record as the most weeks in first position will still difficult to surpass other players maybe even this will last a long time.
I don't think he's likely to overtake Djokovic in ranking points. If we look at the race points, he's still 2k behind. We have to remember that Medvedev has 1,500 points from last year's ATP finals to defend. But a lot will depend on Djokovic's motivation. I can't see that he has anything left to achieve outside the slams. How does he maintain his motivation in lesser tournaments? It might take the whole tennis tournament for Medvedev to overtake Djokovic in the number 1. First, if Djokovic doesn't play or only play less tournaments next year and didn't won. Second, Medvedev winning all the tournaments he entered net year. So most likely it will also be hard to overcome the lead of Djokovic for now. This elite players is also motivated, specially after you lost a big grand slam this year. So for sure Djokovic wanted to comeback again and won tournaments as many as he can.

Here is an image grab from wikipedia, is shows the points structure for the 1000 tournaments, Winner gets 1000 obviously with the other finalist winning 600. As @Trofo posted there are 2 tournaments left, Shanghai Masters and Paris Masters, Medvedev is the current holder of both titles. In Shanghai 2019 the last tournament Djokovic only managed the Quarter finals and I dont think he was at the Paris Masters.

If we are asking whether he can overtake Djokovic by the end of the year, then there's no need to look at current ranking points, and who has what from last year to drop. Instead we only need to look at the race points, from the season so far. Medvedev has a 2,000 point deficit, or thereabouts. It's a big ask to overcome that by the end of the season. Even if he won everything, it would need Djokovic to score very very low points.

Ok so we know how many points a winner gets but there are points for other stages, this is a view of those so from the diagram Djokovic only has to enter one of the two remaining 1000 masters tournaments or even a lesser 250 or 500 tournament to make some points but Medvedev has to pack his schedule to earn points.
Its a visual

So probably next year will be big for both players, Djokovic aiming to remain at the top, while Medvedev is closing in. And there could be surprises as well that can take away their race for the top spot. There's still Zverev and Tsitsipas that might spoil Medvedev chances and then the wave of young guys, Alcaraz, Sinner.

However next year both can have a fresh go at each other, and even Nadal should be fitter by then so it’ll be a really entertaining contest as to who’ll claim the top spot next year.

I also think that Medvedev is unlikely to be able to fulfill this extra task. First of all, Djokovic is an extremely strong fighter, able to easily recover, as I think, not only physically but also psychologically after this unfortunate loss. However, the score of the match was such that it showed the equality of the rivals. And of course, we must not forget the players you listed. In any case, very interesting matches and events await us in the near future and next year. Let's watch ...

I think that it's even theoretically impossible for Medvedev to take the no. 1 spot this season. He'll have a much better shot next year, when Đoković is defending 3 GS titles.
In tennis the no. 1 spot isn't that important anyway, it does show who collected the most points but personally, not who the best player during that year was. For example - a player who played only Grand slams and won 3 of them would be behind a player who won 2 masters and lost 4 GS semi-finals.

Fun fact which I don't think anybody shared yet: This year women's final had higher number of views then men's final. This really surprised me since it is usually the other way around and not even close. I guess people wanted to see new faces battling it on girls side and/or maybe we can attribute this to viewers in UK. I believe tennis is very big there and having their girl in the final must have been magnet for many to tune in.

Another fun fact: Leylah Fernandez, who obviously has a break out tournament in the US Open, still a teenager just like her counterpart, Raducanu, has a Filipino blood. And we all know that Filipinos love to support their athletes, like Manny Pacquiao and they are proud if they see athletes of Filipino blood many names for themselves (Philippines also just won their first gold medal in the Olympics). There's a lot of billboards of Leylah around in the country as well. So maybe we can attribute the increase of viewership to Filipinos in Canada and in the Philippines and around the world.

Yes, it's really surprising, maybe the ladies side, specially two teenagers attract more tennis fans to see instead of the Djokovic vs Medvedev, which they thought could all the way be Djokovic. And maybe fans wanted new faces in the ladies and what better to watch upcoming players Fernandez and Raducanu. So this is rejuvenate the womens side because for sure everyone are going to follow this two to whatever tournaments they enter and this could be a rivalry in the making.

@Juggy777 - yes that's what I'm trying to say, mathematically, Medvedev can't overtake him at the end of the year because there are tournaments that both are entered and chances are they can win it or at least least reach semi finals and earn ranking points. As for Nadal, we can't really say the same, hopefully he can bounce back and still win clay court tournaments.

Medvedev is handsome. But I did not understand why the hell he collapsed on the court like a dead fish and showed everyone his tongue. This is a stupid gesture, I do not approve of it. Although the victory was certainly a big grief for the Djokovic.

Nah, not true at all. Ask any player if he'd rather win a GS or be at the no. 1 spot and they will all choose the GS win. No. 1 spot in tennis sometimes really does mean you are the best but can often mean that you simply play every tournament. It is the same for the ATP finals - only the 8 best players of the year attend and they play for the no. 1 spot and it is more of an exhibition than a serious tournament. Even famous Masters 1000 tournaments carry more weight than the ATP finals.

There was lots of people who did not understand the gesture but there were also some who were thrilled by it. Personally, I find i a bit strange, but I understand the idea and intentions behind it, so well done. Tennis is a sport that can use all the extra media attention and even few bad boys. Kyrgios is gone for now, no more antics from him as compared to last year, not just in court but out court revelations (sleeping with a fan), and drama (Nadal bickering). Anyone looking at the Istanbul Atp challenger tournament? Just saw some odds, but I'm not familiar with the players name. Not sure if others are betting or skipping this one.

He had just beaten the strongest tennis player in the world in straight three sets in a Grand Slam tournament. Not sure if we would be able to control our emotions fully and don't make a weird gesture as well. He deserved this one although I am still shocked that game ended 3 - 0. I wonder if anyone placed a bet on that result?

But that's what betting is, sometimes one gets lucky, sometimes one gets broke. and about the gesture, we honestly have seen people make different kinds of gestures in the past, and some got heavily punished for those. But as a sportsman, he's representing his country on one of the biggest stages. So he should keep his certain emotions in check. But depending on the adrenaline rush of human body, it can be really hard to do at times. Again, it's not about being guilty or not, it's about the little kid who thinks of the sportsperson as his idol.
