I have a question as a newbie to this entire crypto coin thing...  Are these long periods due to the pool not finding a block or that the pool doesn't have enough processing power to decipher the block?

I am far from an expert but luck as well as total hashing power does have a part in it. We are coming off of a 30 day run or so of really good luck so I really can't complain too much. Larger pools do usually find more blocks but your share will be a lot smaller so it does average out. Here is a link to weekly pool stats and luck: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=77000.0

I started here last week Sad
I know it is tempting to jump ship but hang in there it will pick back up. Usually after a run like this we have a couple of really good rounds.

Cool, hanging in.

I have a question as a newbie to this entire crypto coin thing...  Are these long periods due to the pool not finding a block or that the pool doesn't have enough processing power to decipher the block?

Think of it like this, 5 people (5 miners in the pool - slush) are standing in a room and are being asked to guess a number between 1 and 10000.
They shout their guesses out as fast as they can.
They are trying to guess the same number faster than the 50 people in the room next door (50 miners in ghashio).

With 50 people compared to 5, it's most likely that the larger pool will guess more numbers.

On a lucky day however, slush with it's dedicated army of 5 - will punch way above it's station (and historically always has).

On unlucky days the 50 people next door are having all the fun and us paltry 5 people seem to have no chance.

TL;DR version for the impatient
So to answer you question, the reason we have these longs rounds is due partly to bad luck and partly to the fact that there are much bigger pools than us. I still mine here, always have liked the underdog.

If you poke around Blockchain.info you can find some useful information. The most important one for this discussion is the average time to find a block, which is above 10 minutes, which means all pools are suffering a little bit and finding fewer blocks than normal. That high average also means the Level of Difficulty increase coming up may be a small one. Not much of a consolation but we had some big LOD increases recently and they really kill your hardware investment. I'll trade 1 24 hour block for 1 small LOD increase!

Thanks, my son (and other non-bitcoin people) understood it this way way. Opens up loads more questions:
  • What happens if one guy shouts answers really fast - better hash rate
  • What happens if slush and ghash recruit extra people so they guess the numbers faster - difficulty increases and you now have to guess a number between 1 to 15000

etc

sorry Im still new to this ... how do we find out when the round ends? Its been over 18 hours and the reward I had so far (with my 110gh/s) has been puny at 0.00045383 BTC. Feels like all this work but very little return. Is that how this work ?

some rounds we earn more, some less ? What is that dependent on ?

thanks

Look at your estimated reward on the account page, when this round ends that is close to what you can expect to receive. This is just an unusually long round, but you look under your statistics page to see when it as well as previous rounds have ended.

You will know the round ended by visiting the "Statistics" page and seeing the counter reset and the last block added to the table below the displayed variables.

You will get your "puny" 0.00045383BTC when this round ends, and something similar at the end of each round.  Unfortunately the last couple of days have been very poor for everyone here, but sometimes the luck is out of control and it kind of makes up for it.

110GH/s is hardly anything these days, which is why your reward looks like hardly anything.  Things will be better when some good luck comes around.

The amount earned depends on your hash rate relative to the rest of the pool.
People come and go, some are known as 'Pool Hoppers', they will split and go to
another pool when blocks get long. So, earnings per block are very dynamic but
will be approximately the same during each LOD period.

I have seen blocks take over 24 hours. Everybody hates it but it happens. There
are also the 10 minutes blocks that everyone loves. Best thing to do is not watch
it too close. Go to Coindesk.com and do some reading, or anything other than hitting
refresh during a long block, or you can drive yourself nuts.

thanks for all the replies. I understand that 110gh/s is tiny and it will only get worse with difficulty going up. I have an S3 coming but with the electricity costs here in OZ its almost pointless I guess. Bit of fun though!!! Its quite fascinating

Get in the translation, if you Google translator does not work. But I shall explain, Google can not convey all intonations and eloquence Russian language. Grin

It is 100% agreement! Someone disconnects from the network pool at certain times. Otherwise I can not give an explanation of what is happening. Why do we catch blocks 9 and fucking hang. Then again, a couple and hang. Then again 9 and hang. Now forgot to include the pool to the network? That is why we are in such an ass? AU! Wake up! Enough to scoff at his men, who with you!!!!!!!
