AFCON: Don’t watch us on TV anymore – Super Eagles captain, Musa sends message to President Tinubu

Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu not to watch the team on television anymore but to come over to Ivory Coast and cheer them at the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON.

Whether the president come over or on TV as for me they can't do anything because their football skill on the pitch is very weak and slow. And their previous match said about them all. Nigeria Super Eagles can't play with Morocco or Mali if the case may be if they escape from the round of 16.with Cameron. And instead nof calling the president to come over why can't he tell the president to prepare a wonderful monetary package for them if they win the cup and that will also motivate them on the field. The present of Tinubu will not change anything so they should play their game they way they want.

Serious I have the same thing going on in my mind as you, and that is why once I come across this post, that’s why I quote it. However, Oshimen is not really doing well in the AFCON this time around, and I’m surprised at how he plays for Napoli and comes back home playing the way he is doing now because if the striker had put in effort and done what he is doing in Napoli, he would have scored a goal, but the player is not doing as expected seriously. And it weakens me down. Any time Nigeria has a match, I always don’t put high expectations on them because I always think they won’t win due to how the players are doing.

You’re missing the point. No one is saying Victor Osimhen is a bad striker. When we look at the Nigerian national team, there is no striker in the Super Eagles that comes close to Victor Osimhen and we would be doing him a disservice if we say he’s not a good striker. Osimhen was highest goal scorer in the qualifiers and was also instrumental in the World Cup qualifiers as well.

We have had several encounters with Cameroon, historically Cameroon has been a tough opponent for the Super Eagles. We will need a new strategy otherwise we won’t survive the today’s game. I think Peseiro should add another striker to play in front with Victor Osimhen.

  Nigeria vs Cameroon
There is a lot of action sure to go down in this game but if you look at the two of them, it will be so difficult to predict the game as the two sides both had less than satisfactory performance during the group stages even though Nigeria won two of their games, we all know it was by a slim margin and I'm sure they will struggle in this game. Cameroon came into this tournament looking so unprepared and if not for a late goal by defender Christopher Wooh, they would have been knocked out in group stage by Gambia.
Many believe that if Andre Onana is behind the sticks for Cameroon, they would concede a lot of goals but I strongly doubt that, being as they failed to score a bucket of goals against Guinea Bissau in their last game, settling for just one goal and the way I see it, if they manage to get one goal today it will be a big struggle to keep that goal and even get another one. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed for the game.

Maybe the presence of the president may give them motivation to do better, who knows. However, if i were the president, today will be the day I'll decide if I'll come watch them play in the future. The performance if Nigeria in this competition is so discouraging to watch. Imagine i had a conversation with my friend yesterday at work and i said i will be going out to watch the match of Nigeria against Cameroon today with some of my friends. And he was like ' You still watch those underperforming Super Eagles' Its quite embarrassing though, but it is the truth. Perhaps they haven't watched how their replay and see how bad they are performing. Today they may be lucky but after today it won't have to be a game of luck it will be a game of how composed and strong your team is.

In regular times it might be a bit difficult to predict who will win but I saw some sportsbooks predicting Nigeria to qualify to the next round. I don't expect anything interesting in this fight because usually both teams play defensively with low goal especially Nigeria recently who have scored one goal more often, Cameroon also played the same way only scored 1 goal in 4 matches except in the last match. Overall I predict this match will be no more than 2 goals and for betting under 2.5 goals might be a good idea but the odds are low.

Nigeria vs Cameroon is one of the top fixtures of this Round of 16 in the AFCON especially as the 2 teams are both top tier teams in Africa. Surprisingly, they both haven’t been able to attain the maximum satisfaction performance in any of the 3 matches they’ve played.

And this fact alone makes this match so hard to predict, but what can be said is that the best midfield in this fixture will take the glory home. Judging from this, I think Nigeria will get all the glory of this fixture. Andre Onana in between the sticks, I think he wouldn’t make much errors today but any error he makes and Nigeria capitalizes on it could be the only goal or should I say winning goal for the match. I think the Nigerian strikers should use Onana frequent errors to their advantage and score more than just 1 goal.

This is the second time today that I'm seeing a post which the poster is saying that Victor Osimhen isn't a good striker and I can't help but imagine what could be the very source of such claim. Victor Osimhen after scoring in the Super Eagles first game against Equatorial Guinea have never found the net but has been very instrumental to the success of the team so far and that's why I think he doesn't deserve all the criticism he's currently receiving.

Of a truth, the primary work of a striker is to score goals plenty of goals of which the Nigeria international haven't been doing in the ongoing tournament but it doesn't mean that he's not a good striker.
And the one who wrote that Osimhan is a bad striker said that he did not score a single goal, this already suggests that this critic does not follow him properly, and perhaps these are just words. A team is not about individual players, if the team achieves a result, then everything was done well and it doesn’t matter whether the striker scores goals in any match, or he can score one important goal that will bring the team victory.

In those matches when he doesn't score, he can be just as useful as other players.

Osimhen have never been a bad striker for the Nigerian national team, just that Nigerian pattern of play is totally different from Napolian style of play, in that Napoli team, the midfielder makes it easier for the attacker, but in the Nigerian color that's never the case.

Secondly, in as much as Nigeria vs Cameroon will always be a fascinating encounter, the Nigerian team need to step up and work on their attack, since their defense is well able to do, if they must qualify to the next round.
In a team where the main focus is on defense, it is always more difficult for the attackers to perform well. If Nigeria today again concentrates on playing defense, and does not actively attack, then we could see low-scoring football. But this won’t make Osimhen a bad striker, it’s just the strategy of the team.

At least Osimhen has scored a goal and just like you stressed on the defensive play from the team, we know it could get worse if the midfielders and defense concentrate more on scoring with their sluggish build up of play.
It's a pattern for the Eagles. Slow and steady they say, but when most times they find themselves in front of goal, it becomes a question of who can score from that point instead of passing onto the best positioned man.
I do hope they get to win Cameroon in the encounter tonight just to shut the critics and haters up and help their FIFA ranking go up.

I just want to confirm if Ahmed Musa the captain of the super eagles team actually said the above. Is there any link to buttress that it was Ahmed Musa that made the statement. These days I am always not in a haste to believe anything that is written over the internet by the media personalities. If actually Ahmed Musa made such a statement, it should be concluded that Nigerians do not actually know what they want.

Do you guys remember the time of president muhammadu buhari, whenever he wishes the super eagles good luck and they lose they will say that it is the bad luck of the president that made them to lose. What do you think will happen if president bola Ahmed tinubu travels to Ivory coast to cheer the boys and they eventually lose. The statement would be that, since he never visited the boys they have been winning just the only time that he traveled to meet them they lost. Therefore it is the president that made them to lose.

There is no need to compare him with the past President Muhammadu Buhari as their luck might differ, But as a president of the Federal republic of Nigeria and as well the Chairman of the ECOWAS board, it makes a lot of sense if he pays the super eagle team a visit because his presence matters when it comes to anything Africa, Nigeria is the giant of Africa and a warm visit and a word of encouragement given to the team can spice up things and strengthen the team the more, thus making them go far in this competition, even can go as far as promising them something he will do for the team should they bring the trophy home.

Like you rightly said, defensive game will not take them far at this stage of the competition. The coach have to talk to the players for a change of mindset because they have to be scoring goals, something they have not been doing well. They have only score three goals in this tournament with one of those goals being penalty and the other own goal. So it is right to say that they have only scored one goal in this competition.
A team that have goal scoring machines like Osimhen and Chukwueze should not struggle to score because these are key players on their respective teams. With this pattern of playing, if Cameroon score Nigeria first, it will be hard to equalize and possiblly win the match. Therefore, to survive tonight, I want to see more of attacking football with focus on scoring at least three goals.

You're right but this time around I believe the Super Eagles will change that much defensive style of play, we have guys who can run through defense and get goals even provide the attackers with balls inside the box.
Cameroon are some how going to be stubborn in this encounter but the Super Eagles will surprise them with a different pattern of play and I feel this is the game the Super Eagles will get more than 1 goal in this tournament, I predict this game to end 3-1 in favor of the Eagles.

The Super Eagles are playing average football but they are getting the results. They have not given us the confidence that they can go all the way to winning the title. So far, only a handful of the players have impressed me. The other players have not displayed the skill and stamina needed to play African football. Victor Osimhen gets chances and he throws them away, the Osimhen at Napoli would have scored those goals yesterday but the Osimhen at the AFCON is shooting wide. I think it’s time for José Peseiro to trust his other strikers.
Osimhen is an elite striker. Perhaps, He's not to everyone's taste but arguments can't be made against his consistency & progression across 3 leagues & teams. It goes against every grain of common sense to focus exclusively on AFCON as a test of his abilities when none of the shining stars has particularly come to the fore.

Honestly I think we are all only criticizing them because they have not been winning convincingly.
Imagine osimhen scored the two clear chances he had in the first game. Then, same in the second and third.
Plus all the wrongly disallowed goal will we be saying they are underperforming? Maybe he’s too relax, but he is the best in the squad, you just can’t drop him for another striker.

I don't need the ideas of nobody to tell me Victor Oshime is a bad striker why? Because he hasn't scored for Nigeria International. They shouldn't forget he doesn't have the same kinds of players he has with Napoli so they don't have no grounds to compare or get angry over such a player, new set of Afcon based players ( Home Base ) should be employed to play the next World Cup Competition or the Afcon with new set of players eager to play for the club.

The game against Cameroon will be a great test. Nigerians will have to win or run back home. Cameroon will fight to give Nigeria a strong head. I'm still not clear if they'll be ables to win.
It was the same thing that I was complaining the other day about the comparison of Victor Osimhen performance in his club and his performance with the super eagles, the national team is a different playing ground compared to Napoli where he has the likes of his teammates that they've been playing together and understand their chemistry, unlike the national team that they just trained for only a week and they are still trying to understand themselves. The impact of some home-based players into the team will really help to improving the teams performance especially the midfield because I remember the last time Sunday MBA was introduced to the national team to support, he was a home-based player.
As for the cameroonian team I know that they are all out for a serious business against Nigeria.

Nigeria's playing style is weak and slow this time around and they always have a difficult match against Cameroon, so I think Cameroon will give it their all best to defeat Nigeria. But if Nigeria has to improve their defence and concentrate more on winning, trust me Cameroon and other nations will be bonus to them.

And instead nof calling the president to come over why can't he tell the president to prepare a wonderful monetary package for them if they win the cup and that will also motivate them on the field. The present of Tinubu will not change anything so they should play their game they way they want.

In my opinion, his presence will serve as motivation for both the players and the Nigeria fans in the stadium and that is why Ahmad Musa asked for that.
It's not a bad idea to prepare a monetary package for them, but do you think they'll focus on the pitch again if they know about the package? Because this reminds me of Saudi Arabia during the 2022 World Cup. They performed well against Argentina, but were rewarded with luxurious goods after the game, which caused them to lose concentration and play not well against Poland and Mexico.
His presence will be more better than any rewards

I think footballers representing their county in the AFCON competition are not happy that their presidents are not interested in watching them play live in the stadium. That they prefer watching on TV. However, the Nigerian captain has come out in public to address this situation. He is addressing this to his president, so read what he said.

Is it compulsory that the president should watch them live? To me i feel it is part of his duties to show that patriotic feeling by traveling with them to the stadium. Or maybe he is not a fan of football, and he is not impressed with their performance. Am just saying maybe he has his own personal reason.
It is actually not compulsory to watch them live, but his presence will mean a lot to the players and will give them more confidence while representing Nigeria.
I am sure the Super Eagle captain said this statement out of anger because so many people are criticizing their performance so far in the competition, that was why he will want the President and other representatives of sports to come and witness their effort.

I'm just keeping my fingers crossed for the game.

The match will be difficult to predict because both of them have had even performances when you check their last matches. Nigeria and Cameroon are both winning each other in the AFCON, but Cameroon mostly wins Nigeria in the finals, while Nigeria mostly wins them in elimination stages like this.
Lets wait for the outcome of the match, but as far as I am concerned, Nigeria has all it takes to beat Cameroon.

I'm far from impress with the super eagles performance in the AFCON tournament. After the stalemate against Equitorial Guinea, we were able to win our last two matches against Ivory Coast and Guinea Bissau but in summary we've been really poor. I don't know how far we are going to keep depending on luck. The indomitable lions of Cameroon on the other hand, are also having their own struggles, so the game is going to be two average teams lurking horns together, and there's no favourite.

The defensive style of football has been a regular thing for the super Eagles , it's been their style of play for most of their appearance, changing such mentality that has been in them for years even the former super eagles squads had similar characteristics so changing at this time wouldn't be something they will do just at once but they may take some time. The Cameroonian ain't any better as compared to the super eagles but  they may want to perform more than their regular performance since they know how critical the stage they are now.

I'm hoping the eagles add some improvement to their creativity and striking force while still strengthening their defense because I still don't trust their keeper well enough, he hasn't had any spectacular performance since his AFCOn appearance.

Lolz. Nawao!! I don't think that Musa made that statement and if does he can only said, the president should support them and encourage them in the tournament. And probably I am suspecting that the statement was made by a joker fan who just wanted people to laugh at the moment. There was also post in Facebook that, the Captain of Cameron team said, he has not been playing football since when the tournament started because of injury and now that he okay, he must play in this evening match to win Nigeria and send them home.

The Super Eagles should not blame anyone with their bad luck and unprofessional performance on the field. Id they played well they would have won those games. And now they are trying to repeat those mistakes again.

The first round of 16 games in the AFCON, Angola - Namibia has kicked off. This match is a test of their will to make history, both teams are super hyped and have the full support of their respective countries. Keep in mind the winner of this match will face Nigeria (God willingly) in the last 8.

Nigeria vs Cameroon will start later. Rumours is circulating that Onana may not be starting the match. This is surprising because Onana is a brilliant goalkeeper and plays for one of the biggest clubs in English football. Cameroon may just be making a grave mistake by benching Onana.

Angola (wins)
Vs
Namibia

Namibia had the advantage in the game but they could not make use of it. Angola still look dangerous even playing with ten men after their goalkeeper Adilson Neblu was sent of for using his hand to stop a ball outside of the penalty box. They have still scored the first goal in the game. Angola with their ten men still pressured the Namibia defense to get their own red card, and then score a second goal from the free kick. The game is over for Namibia, because if they could not control this game when they had the advantage, they cannot control it and get themselves back now that they are a man down. Congrats on this bet.
