I remember when people first did these, blew me away.

Is that a fan on the cpu running?
Video would be cool.

Ya, it's so weird to think that the fans are still running completely under the liquid. They usually run at a lower RPM, due to the higher resistance, IIRC.

Interesting story.  One of the cards had a almost stuck fan.  After I put it into the oil, the fan started to spin again.  First start and stop, then 100%.  Though the system reads the fans only spinning at 250RPM at 100%.   Grin

To answer some of your questions:

I am using mineral oil.  Though around here the only mineral oil that I can get local is used as a farm animal laxative.  I can order it online, but the shipping kills me.  One Gallon jugs are already $15 each and this rig is using a 20 gallon tank, though only using 15 gallons.  There are videos of people using vegetable/cooking oil, but while its cheaper, you have to change out the oil after several months.  Mineral oil, if kept covered, should last years (tested by one company for over 5 years to date)

The setup was not that hard.  I was going on ideas and guesses.  I could have bought the kit from a company for $500 but it would only hold 3 dbl slot cards.  Since I was piecing it together there was a lot of error to get pieces right, but with experience I know what to expect now.

The idea of submerging it for me at least, is the advantage that you don't need to buy water blocks for your cards.  Each block can cost you 80-100 each, that is if you have a current video card.  Since most miners (imo) use older cards, harder to find water blocks.

For me it was the fact that I could keep the computer in a "dirty" location, and not worry about the computer getting covered in dirt or bugs.  Plus keeping it in the garage takes care of any noise issues.  There is a night and day difference between air rig and oil rig with noise and possible heat, but there is also a 2x-4x cost difference between the air and oil.  So it comes down to need or desire.

Ill post of a video of air rig and oil rig after I get my triple Rad installed and get the oil rig running at 100%.  I think my issue is now that all the cards running 100% heats the oil up enough that it causes the USB controller on the motherboard to overheat and it reboots, but it hangs while initializing the USB controller.  The big downside to the oil rig, is it heats up everything.  So if one thing has a low threshold, then everything fails.  The rig would work on air, if I had a box fan blowing directly through it (not in the tank).  So I know it will work, just need enough cooling.

So expect some video this weekend.

I wonder if fans would last longer like this. They're already swimming in oil, so no need to re-lubricate them.

the oil will get dirty and yellow in usually about 6-8 months and then you will need to buy a fuel filter or something to get it like new again

@elrodvoss

I think your neglecting the fact that it will take 8-12 hours for that much oil to reach max temperature. Oil cooling just doesn't work well for mining. It would be fine for gaming as you never game for that long straight, well normal people anyways. Maybe if you use the triple radiator and the double it may be enough but even that's doubtful. I'm just trying to help so you don't waste your money on something that doesn't work. It will be way better and cheaper in the long run to take a trip to a junk yard and get one. Just because that radiator says it will dissipate 700w with water does not mean it will do it with oil running through it. The oil acts much different than water because it had a much lower thermal conductivity 0.162 vs 0.58.

I moved my rigs to the basement, decided to power them off my 250v 30A dryer socket for increased power efficieny and not needed to screw around with lower voltage and lower amperage circuits, and have since replaced my stressed evga nforce 790i sli ultra board with an msi z77a-g45.

Left rig has from bottom to top: XFX HD-585X-ZNFC (5850), SAPPHIRE 100281-3SR (5870), ASUS EAH5850 DIRECTCU/2DIS/1GD5 (5850), XFX HD-585A-ZNFC (Reference 5850), XFX HD-585X-ZNFC (5850), and GIGABYTE GV-R585OC-1GD (5850). The gigabyte's fans malfunctioned and have 2 x 80mm x 25mm fans tied onto it.
Middle rig has 4x 5970, all reference. Right rig has 4x 5870 and 2x 5970, all reference. All gpu's run at 1v except for the sapphire 5870 which is 1.05v and the Gigabyte which runs at an unknown, locked, high voltage (It's stable at 1030 MHz core).

Power supplies used are 750 watt NZXT HALE90 for the left one, Rosewill LIGHTNING 1300 watt for the middle one, and PC Power & Cooling 1KW-SR (1000 watt) for the right one. The rosewill powers one of the 5970 on the right. Power consumption is probably in the area of 2850 watts between the three (The middle one measured 985 watts when it was outside). Hashrates are 2150mhash for the left, 2854for the middle, and 2995 on the right.

An friend here in Portland told me to post a video showing her BFL FPGA / GPU setup.

She made this video in order to win a BFL SC Single. There's also a raffle incentive if she wins. She's looking for views, but I looking to everyone that "Lady Miners" do exist and they are every bit as unorganized and hilarious (duct tape, a piece of wood holding up a milk crate filled with GPUS?!) as the rest of us. Hilarious. (no offense Ada)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=On0r-7XGf0U

For those of you who are hardcore and want an extra challenge, I'll send 1 BTC to the first 5 people who can correctly guess the number / type of each GPU shown. 1 entry per user. G'Luck!

Hot-air, dryer room, dryer plug, right next to dryer ..... ever thought about ducting hot-air off rig into dryer air intake? Will make your dryer work less if it has temp. control, might save some pennies and when dryer isn't running re-direct or might just pipe through on its own (depends on resistance to flow).

Unacceptable

Dryer is run on gas and 110v socket. And miners are currently serving as a space heater.
