Previously the forum was hosted on sourceforge http://bitcoin.sourceforge.net/boards/index.php which is no longer reachable.
Founded by Satoshi Nakamoto. The domain name was owned by Sirius but is now controlled by Cøbra. The forum is administrated by theymos .
The forum was also reachable under forum.bitcoin.org for some time before it moved to bitcointalk.org IIRC.
The "name" of the forum is actually "Bitcoin Forum", not "Bitcointalk" (see upper left corner of this page).

There was a period where both Sirius and I were active administrators. For convenience, I reckon Jan 1, 2012 as when I became head administrator, though it was actually a gradual transition starting before and ending after that.

The Cypherpunks and Bitcoin. The years before bitcointalk.

There is a huge amount of history on Bitcointalk. There are some really iconic threads to read:

Probably more. Does copy and paste of copyrighted material deserve a merit ? How much is required for it to be plagiarism ?
I'm not making accusations - I'm asking a genuine question.
--snip--

He is clearly citing the source so plagiarism is overruled, and for his efforts bringing up something to the community deserve merit (not everybody reading news)

Source
Be Positive

So plagiarism would be the wrong word. Copyright infringement ? I agree it is newsworthy and clicking links is a pain.

Yes is working great  but we (or better, you DT members) need to be more strict to punish abusers.
I remember this:
Merit sales, transfers to aliases, back-and-forth trading, etc. are not much of an issue. All illegitimate merit will decay, and will account for a tiny and very expensive fraction of the total merit economy. It's basically a rounding error; fight it where convenient, but waste no sleep over it.
I've been on DT2 for 2 months now, and only tag red on accounts that I believe deserve it without a doubt. So far I haven't tagged merit abusers, and I'm not planning on changing that. I do like how the 5 merit abusers received red trust from 5 different DT-members. That seems better than all of it coming from the same person.

I agree that the system overall works. Anyone rising rapidly would require some of the merits from DT2 members and smerit sources to level up quickly. There are not enough merits floating around to do it without obvious systematic abuse.

There is a risk that too much tagging for spam or merit will make the real $ scammers look more legitimate.
2004  Other / Meta / Re: Celebrating my 0 to 100+ merits and demonstrations of impact on: May 28, 2018, 07:15:57 AM

Well guys, I will say it's more!!!
Unfortunately it 15/24 are questionable (!!!) Check yourself.

It's a big question (?) how these members are misusing merits.

Yes is working great but we (as forum in this cause, you DT members) need to be more strict to punish abusers.
Wish they would. These merit abusers has their own excuses and lately I noticed IT WORKS. I feel in need of shifting my energy to something else.

Probably more. Does copy and paste of copyrighted material deserve a merit ? How much is required for it to be plagiarism ?
I'm not making accusations - I'm asking a genuine question.
There are genuine reasons to copy and paste and it is unpleasant to have to click a link to go to an article but there are also copyright to be considered.

Some promoters avoid US jurisdiction by barring US residents from participation.
2009  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Cryptopia Cryptocurrency Platform Services and Development on: May 26, 2018, 08:18:32 AM
I really wish they would add ETH as another quote market, maybe instead of NZDT markets..

I doubt they will remove the NZDT market - hopefully they can get the fiat deposit and withdrawal through the banking system going again. (Sort out the KYC issues with their banking partner). Banks are making it hard for Crypto.

Cryptopia is not a fan of ETH. It has cause them a lot of problems in the past. They opposed the DOA fork so while ETC remained listed it took a lot of lobbying to get ETH re-instated on the exchange. (I know this because I was one of the people lobbying for it to be listed).

I suspect that they will be focusing on scaling issues and upgrades before any more base-markets will be added.

It is only recently that they started to get on top of their support delays and I think their focus will be on improving that.
2010  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Cryptopia Cryptocurrency Platform Services and Development on: May 26, 2018, 08:03:23 AM

UPDATE: Cryptopia API has glitches during couple last weeks, your issue can be provoked by experiments of Cryptopia team. I have got today same behavior of GetBalance as you. CancelTrade broken too.

Sorry, but I am glad to not be alone with this issue. I have heard back from cryptopia support three times.

All three times I am told to check their API documentation and that you "just" dont send any parameters to get all balances.

So for the fourth time, I know rejected the "solution" on their support page and await some useful information.

Since you encountered same issue, it's 90% a problem on their end, right??

Lets pressure Cryptopia a bit, so they don't slack around telling people they have no API issues when its a goddamn shit-show making trading bots with their API.

API:

Cryptopia recently changed their public API which is probably why they said to check the API documentation.
That was announced here: https://support.cryptopia.co.nz/csm?id=kb_article&sys_id=c977970cdb8ed34032a664a14a9619fd

The main change was restricting the request limits.

"markets" parameter restricted to 5

https://support.cryptopia.co.nz/csm?id=kb_category&kb_category=afc245c8db3193001fd0787dbf961990

Websockets:

Cryptopia has also just deployed some changes to the way they push their exchange data to users' browsers.  Users with bots making use of undocumented and unsupported websocket to receive exchange data will no longer receive data in the format they did previously, and will most likely need to modify their bots to handle this. If you encounter this please keep in mind that it is an undocumented feature and they do not guarantee it or the data it provides.

They are planning on providing documentation in future and official support for websockets. Currently it is an unsupported feature.

If you have trouble viewing the API documentation please log out of your Cryptopia account. An expired session token will cause an error page to be displayed.
2011  Local / Beurzen / Re: Btc op Exchange laten staan? on: May 26, 2018, 06:38:49 AM

Gdax is verzekered tegen hacks. Maar niet je eigen account op Gdax.com .

Looking at this thread and the witchcraft test I think Lauda might be in trouble.

1. Is the suspect a woman?
2. Does she have a pet?
3. Does she have a wart?
4. Is she irritating?
5. Is she weird around your kids?
6. Is she old?
7. Has she stopped going to church?
8. Has she threatened you — and then it totally came true?
9. Have you seen her spirit in your house at night?
10. Has she confessed?

Charges could be dropped by a relative’s defense in a trial by combat, or by twelve people swearing an oath of the accused’s innocence.

You can burn the witch alive in order to save their soul.

None of the referral links work anymore - they are to dead ponzi scams.

I probably have some dead links to ponzi scams out there that tricked me into thinking they were legitimate companies. This is not conclusive that they were knowingly promoting a ponzi or scam. Sometimes you just don't know any better and get taken for a ride. We live and we learn.

Running and participating in ponzi scams is illegal in a lot of jurisdictions.

Was he running a ponzi scam? It sounds more like he was trying to make some goofy marketing opportunity work and it turned out to not be all that he bargained for. I'm not defending their actions, but based on the evidence you've presented I don't see much to suggest malice or intent.

He is an active promoter of multiple ponzis over a number of years with thousands of downstream recruits.

I've taken your comment on board and to ensure not to even accidentally breaking a rule have moved the claims unrelated to the start of the thread to another board where private information is allowed to be posted. But yeah - all the info so far was sourced from Bitcointalk so there is nothing new. It is better consolidated there - it was getting a bit messy.

I thought posting personal information was against the rules around here and grounds for a ban.

At this point you are not making your "Scam accusation" any stronger. You are only acting maliciously and pedantic. This thread has turned into OP giving mdayonliner free advertisement for their referral links.

Not too good at spelling, either. Now is as good of a time as any to start improving.

All the "personal information" is not personal information because it is publicly displayed in many of his posts and freely available in the public domain.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3759887.0 Almost all the info that can be considered personal is contained in that post.

Nothing new. He challenged me to post more - which I haven't done yet. I do respect privacy and some things I will not post.

Ok, since you can’t find the error on your own screenshots, I’ll have to ease away the effort from you: check the “received in the last 120 days”. TXs between May 15th and May 10th are exact duplicates. See it now?

Bringing me into the discussion by being the most red marked in your post is, I can assure you, not going to help your case at all. I tend to be rather calm with situations, but this kind of gets on my nerves.

The now personal vendetta you have with other forum members should stay between you. If to defend your case you consider that dragging a third party by passer into the discussion is of any use, you’re wrong.
I actually glimpsed on previous days through parts of the accusations and replicas that you referenced. To be honest, I don’t really get my kicks from reading them and consider them childish as soon as the heat goes up, thus I stop reading them. The forum posts should be constructive and not a Peaky Blinders sidewalk fight.

Objectively, the problem is down to the following:
-   Account Farmers do exist.
-   Merit abusing does exists.
-   Both are difficult to prove, even if there are suspicious indicators.
-   Rule enforcement on account farming does exists (but I bet only 5% of the forum know which cases of alt accounts are valid and which prohibited).
-   No formal rules exist on Merit Abusing. Semi-formal steps may be taken in the shape of red tagging, but there is a contradiction between the (non) formal rules that don’t prohibit it explicitly, and the DTs which don’t have a clear guideline nor uniform criteria (I may be wrong here).
-   And then Merit has to be earned, being reporting suspicions cases one of the mechanisms, extending the initial course of action below DT level.

Formalizing rules and case set scenario guidelines, while difficult to elaborate, would help. Defending yourself by attacking others, and increasing font size doesn’t really.
There goes my lunch-break...

Yes I see the error now. Two screenshots joined in the wrong place.

- I disagree with users getting tagged unless it is blatant and deliberate.
- I am sorry that you feel dragged into it. It is not my intention. The only person I'm trying to get to change is mdayonliner. But he just doesn't seem to get it.

- users should be notified and not quietly tagged and talked about without their knowledge.
- a thread rather than tagging the user in feedback. A polite message rather than ridicule. (Unless you want ridicule and abuse to be the standard of the forum)

- if there are going to be rules about it then it should be clearly stated when you place merit & before you place merit. Not some vague rules that are not even in the FAQ. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2766177.0 Topic: FAQ: Everything you need to know about forum 'activity, account ranks and merit
