That might be how it turned out, but I'd say that not only are we not out of the woods yet, but also that there were several times in which it was sheer luck a nuclear war didn't start - the Cuban missile crisis comes to mind.

But there is something else you have to consider: even if not directly, these nations didn't stop fighting amongst themselves - they instead turned to proxy wars and other indirect means (though arguably no less significant for those caught up in them).

You are correct to say that we have had several close calls of nuclear war breaking out, however I doubt that either country likely has the balls to be the first to attack the other because of the probably consequences. I think most countries would be willing to get all the way to the brink of war, but would likely not want to cross the threshold of attacking another country with nukes.

Proxy wars are generally not as damaging to society and the world as a whole when compared to larger conflicts. Fighting is generally much more localized and done in places that are much less developed.

Sure, I don't believe anyone is crazy enough to push for a major nuclear war either, as I said above - but that doesn't change the fact that those close calls we've had in the past can still easily occur in the future; and we might not be so lucky next time.

As for proxy wars, coups, support of dictators, and whatever other means are used, they certainly aren't as immediately destructive as a major conflict would be, especially for those of us in a first world country that won't go through any of it. For anyone living through, sometimes, decades upon decades of these sorts of things however, I'm not sure they would necessarily care about the difference - dying at the hands of the local friendly dictator or with a bomb dropped on them by another nation, might not make much of a difference. Further, dismissing them as less developed and so not as important for society as a whole, ignores what part they could take, had they been given the chance. Finally, I see that line of reasoning as a sort of fallacy, in that it says that it's better for these types of policies to be followed, than a major conflict to occur - well, that ignores the obvious question: what is the reason for these conflicts to occur in the first place?

Forever alone

Your username reminds me of someone who has been watching too much Death Note (Naer ~ Near). Tongue

And what happen if during the month I change my state from full to Sr.? How they pay it, all full? all Sr. or they count the amount I did in each state?

So far, whenever a user was promoted in the middle of a period, he was paid at the higher rank - in your case, that means all your posts would be paid at the Senior Member rank, if no major changes to the campaign occur in the meantime.

Banned for writing "footbal" instead of "football".

Banned for calling soccer football.

Banned for breaking the thread, and further reported to the authorities for animal abuse. Tongue

(Ressuscitando Cheesy)

Well, it only needs to happen once... Tongue

But yes, this seems more like saber rattling, than anything else - it's always useful to have a scary "enemy" you can point to, after all.

I would argue that nuclear weapons/bombs have actually decreased instances of war. With nuclear bombs, countries are not going to want to go to war with other countries that have nuclear weapons as they are afraid that that the nukes would be used on them.

See how that since WW2 no two countries that both have nuclear weapons have gone to war with each other.

2267  Other / Archival / Re: Updated Overview of Bitcointalk Signature-Ad Campaigns on: August 15, 2014, 05:09:00 PM
Wasn't he the one who ran off with all of updown.bt's original sig campaign money?

He was running updown.bit and luckybit's deals at one point I believe until he got banned, don't know whether stole any money though.

That was what UpDown claimed some time ago - when howzar was asked about this recently, he seems to have denied it (from https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=738554.0):

I believe that next term, the pay module will change into pay per activity.  Also, howzar, why did they unban you? Huh  This thing needs Some trust between you and the person advertising you, and frankly, I don't trust you at all (and no one else should for that matter).

That might be the case, we are still unsure. I have been unbanned as I spent in excess of 3 months banned away from the forum. This much time has changed me. Why should no one trust me? I have never scammed anyone. Either way please do not discuss it here, this is not where it belongs. Thank you.

I believe UpDown.bt claimed that you ran away with some of the funds he provided you for his signature campaign (in the beginning).  I also remember you being banned for spamming users' PMs looking to buy their accounts.  Where exactly would you like me to discuss this? Roll Eyes

That is not a valid claim, I sent it and well okay, yes I did send several PMs, but as I have everyone else I did not SPAM them. I picked out a few accounts and did not spam everyone.

Nonetheless, I have come back changed.

Theres always a talk about the end of the world and use of nuclear weapons but it never happens.

Well, it only needs to happen once... Tongue

But yes, this seems more like saber rattling, than anything else - it's always useful to have a scary "enemy" you can point to, after all.

What happend?

Probably just some big players manipulating the price. Tongue

Anyway, you have a few other threads on this already, like https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=738249.0 for example.
2270  Economy / Economics / Re: Solution to poverty - Socialism or Capitalism? on: August 15, 2014, 12:03:43 AM
Some interesting thoughts here.  I find it all interesting as poverty only exists because currency exists... fiat or crypto the medium matter not.

Even if we went back to bartering or whatnot, chances are you would still have inequality - money is just another way of doing the same thing, but it's senseless to blame it for poverty.
2271  Other / Off-topic / Re: Scientific proof that God exists? on: August 13, 2014, 09:22:07 PM
How did the big bang happen?

Nothing turned into something?

Thats what evolutionists want you to believe, that the ONE time in history that matter was created out of thin air, it just so happened to create 98% of all matter that exists in the universe today.  If thats not a fairy tale I dont know what is!!!!!

That's the god of the gaps fallacy again - pushing the idea of a god to whatever gaps exist in our understanding of the universe. There is no reason to believe it will become true this time, when it hasn't ever before.
2272  Other / Off-topic / Re: Scientific proof that God exists? on: August 13, 2014, 07:46:43 PM
If bible, koran, torah and other holy scriptures are wrong this will not prove that there is no God. If there is a God there is no way we can prove his existence if he don't want to. Our civilization is still very young, still many things we cannot explained.

Sure, there is no way to prove god doesn't exist; but if we can continually make progress in our quest for knowledge without such a concept, why bother with it?
2273  Other / Off-topic / Re: What Song are you Listening To? on: August 13, 2014, 07:22:20 PM
funniest song/music video ive heard/seen in a long time

NSFW- http://youtu.be/RC-e5vs6NeY

That was pretty cool. Grin

I'm currently listening to Advent: One-Winged Angel, from Final Fantasy VII Advent Children (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAVwPR5E8wM - not the best for just hearing the music, but still nice).

EDIT: ah, here we go, music only: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmD478NnnoE.
2274  Other / Off-topic / Re: what do you do to keep fit ? on: August 13, 2014, 06:42:11 PM
You know, fasting... as in, not eating, or at least greatly reducing it, for some time. Tongue (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fasting)

I have no idea in relation to the acid though.

If you don't eat won't it make your body try to use minimum amount of energy as possible?
And that will make you not to lose wight...

Well, you can't really not spend energy if you're alive: keeping warm, breathing, fundamental cellular processes, etc, constantly require energy to keep on going, so some loss of weight will always occur, I suppose.

I had applied for this campaign on 19th JULY https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=291387.msg7920280#msg7920280  By correctly filling your form but I'm not on your 22nd JULY list! Please clarify!
If you're not on the list doesn't mean you're not enrolled.
I also enrolled before the 22th july and I'm not on the list but I still got my payment so you don't have to worry about that as long as you filled in everything correctly.
How did you get your payment if it isn't 17th yet?
Also @jump4ever did you submmit the second form blank? If not then you're NOT enrolled, if you did then you ARE!
Which second form are you referring to? I submitted this form http://bit.do/Primedice but have no idea about second form.

In that link you have access to two forms: one to register, and another to claim payment each month.

I'm not sure if this has changed in the meantime, but when most people here registered, after you clicked submit on the "register" form, the "request payment" form showed up automatically; it is this one he was referring to - you have to click submit in there as well, while leaving the form completely blank.

I know its full atm , Whenever you get a spot i'd really like one though
or if you dont get enough SR member.
I've added it to my sig anyways since i dont know any other signature campaign atm
so i really hope i can get a spot
Thank you.

You can see what other campaigns are available at the moment in the following thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=615953.0. There seem to be a few other campaigns with spots still available, like Bitstars which seems to have a similar model to this one, or PrimeDice which pays per post instead.
2278  Other / Politics & Society / Re: What good things has Obama had since he is elected ? on: August 12, 2014, 12:36:43 PM

I'm under the impression all that was already set in motion long before Obama came around, though he certainly did nothing but help it out, after getting into office. Still, what do you mean by "emails are disappearing with regularity"? Did I miss an episode? Smiley

IRS scandal emails most likely were destroyed on purpose since most IT managers agree that those emails would have been retained somewhere in the system due to redundancy.  It's statistically impossible for intents and purposes - yet Holder refuses to assign forensics to see what is occuring.

Now HHS says email regarding the botched ACA website have gone missing.

Basically you can't punish people if you destroy evidence.  If you throw away the guns, kill all witnesses & destroy any video recording... what bank robbery  Wink

It seems I really did miss those episodes. But that's no problem: I'm sure the ever helpful (and present) NSA has a copy of those emails somewhere... as well as any other agency/government that can somehow gain access to their databases. Roll Eyes
2279  Economy / Services / Re: EdenDice Signature Campaign | Earn Up to 0.1btc for 50 posts | Ref Links Allowed on: August 12, 2014, 12:02:20 PM
If i sign up here for example 22.8 and next payment is 12.9 and I make 50 posts, will I be paid 0.1BTC on 12.9 or must I have signature for whole month (till 22.9) and then you pay me on 12.10?

Thanks for your query. It seems the advertiser would like the full 30 days of advertising. I'll see how many slots go today - hopefully all of them - but if not, payments will likely be sent out daily after you have completed 30 days of posting ie sign up today and get paid on Sept 12th. Sign up on 14th of Aug get paid on 14th of Sept etc.

Guess I should have waited before replying myself. Tongue Still, it would probably be best to ask bitcoininformation to change the "payment period" to just "monthly" then, as it could be misunderstood otherwise.

Hilariousandco posted the following in the overview thread:

EdenDice (thread)
Payment period: Monthly on the 12th
Minimum posts: 50
Payments: BTC0.05 for Members / Full Members & BTC0.1 for Senior Members / Hero Members
Miscellaneous: Ref links are allowed and EdenDice gives 30% of its profits back to players

I will be running the above campaign on behalf of EdenDice and we're good to go.

The payment is always on the 12th of the month, so you'll always get paid on that date, provided you have met the prerequisites (50 posts minimum, keeping sig at all times, etc), regardless of when you signed up to the campaign.

EDIT1: Though, to be honest, now that I think about it, that will probably lead to a lot of people jumping campaigns (if places are available), just doing the minimum amount of posts as quick as possible, and then jumping out again.

EDIT2: Guess I was wrong. See hilariousandco's answer down below.
