I've just finished watching the latest Cyanide and Happiness. I think I prefer their version of The Legend of Zelda - short, and straight to the point. Grin

1962  Other / Off-topic / Re: If ethics were forgotten, what scientific advances could we be likely to see? on: January 14, 2015, 04:29:02 PM
I've had discussions about this over the years, and I'm always intrigued by the answers people give. Recently, I saw a similar question over at reddit, which made me think about it again, and maybe ask fellow Bitcoiners the same question, as most of the answers & discussions were trolling and you know Bitcoiners are suppose to be smarter than the average joe....(?)

So, please discuss.

Here's the one at reddit if you want to check out some responses: Link

Here are some snippets from the reddit post:

Quote
Human cloning.

Quote
Social experiments! This is the area that ethics retards the most as there is no real substitute for human experimentation. If we were willing to raise childern especially for controlled experiments we could generate enormous amounts of data on human interactions, under spesific circumstances.

Quote
If all ethical boundaries were removed we could potentially see the average life expectancy of the world go up

I don't know if anyone mentioned it in Reddit, but I think I saw this on a Cracked article some time ago: find out how the brain works. Without ethical limitations, you could perform invasive experiments to find out how subjects would react to having sections of their brain removed, or otherwise altered, and in some cases even do so in real time. This would affect a great number of areas: sociology, biology and medicine are perhaps the most obvious, but it would also likely be a huge step towards the creation of strong artificial intelligence.

What will you do now when bitcoin price is dropping like crazy and soon will reach 0?

Winter of bitcoin came earlier than I expected. Sell everything while you still can earn some money.

Will you find some better projects and ventures to invest in instead of bitcoin now?

No thanks. Smiley I doubt Bitcoin is "over", as you put it, or that it will even reach $0.000x. So, personally, I'll do what I've been doing all along: keep what I can in BTC, and try to get more of it when I can. Tongue

Anyway, shouldn't this be in Speculation or something?

also a good RPG with some betting options to get extra equipment, skills, etc. may be a good go. Seen so far a couple of ideas (e.g., based on game of thrones series), but they were still not good enough. It requires however substantial preparation of the story.

Dragon's Tale is a RPG with BTC but not really anything with battling or equipment.

I still haven't played it, but from the descriptions I've read so far, as well as from what I've seen of others' comments, I'd say Dragon's Tale is just a glorified casino; not so much an RPG, unfortunately.

But it could be interesting to play an RPG where you could use BTC to pay for items and equipment, and withdraw any winnings made during the game, be it from selling things, killing mobs, killing other players, or whatever. Smiley

Today I've learned that, when petting birds you should stick to the head - petting the chest or the back may be interpreted by them as a form of sexual stimulation. Cheesy

It is interesting to see how the attendance of this march by RF's Sergej Lavrov lead to a rebuke from Le Monde (one of "those" MSMs). They classified him as a "questionable person" and were saying something about absence of "freedom of mass media" (note the formulation!). They also bundled the head of Hungary Orban (he is guilty of not toeing the American line and doing what is best for Hungary):

I think this really is just another "let's bash Obama" thread by Wilikon. Tongue

But to follow your lead, I thought Wikileak's comment on the leader's attendance of the solidarity rally in Paris was pretty good:

And yes, a selfpromo, but seriously, my site is all about users winning! I only take a small fee from the winnings, but rest goes between users. And as I've mentioned previously, I was thinking of adding a chess type of game too, although it's not really related to the site. I will add "Battle Ship" type of game though.

Also, reason I haven't added chess yet is because anyone can cheat online with the moves. You can't do that with battle ship.

I'd think you can do that even with Battleship - it's just that the bot would be somewhat less effective, by virtue of the position of the enemy pieces not being known at the start. But such a bot would still tend to make the optimal move each turn, allowing its user to win a larger percentage of games than you'd usually expect. It reminds me of the recent news about the poker bot Cepheus (http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/speaking-of-science/wp/2015/01/08/meet-cepheus-the-virtually-unbeatable-poker-playing-computer).

As for Chess, and given the popular demand, you could still include it, while placing a warning about the possibility of cheaters using bots during the game. I'm not sure most people would be willing to bet in that scenario, but at least it would attract more users to the site, even if just for playing for fun, or among friends.
1970  Economy / Gambling / Re: what kind of gambling site do you feel the community is missing? on: January 11, 2015, 11:13:04 PM
[...]

I would really like chess as long as it can be against humans and not robots. I think we have most of the other games already.

Chess would be a great idea. Would be easy to make 1v1 matches and tournies. Only issue is that you would always have to wait for someone else to join the game to play and if person had to leave early there would have to be some penalties.

Unfortunately, those wouldn't be the only problems with chess, and other similar games - particularly as money would be involved. As sherbyspark alluded to, bots would be a bigger issue, as they provide a huge advantage, and their use, in one form or another, is virtually impossible to prevent.
1971  Other / Archival / Re: Updated Overview of Bitcointalk Signature-Ad Campaigns on: January 11, 2015, 06:53:49 PM
The Luckyb.it signature campaign is again undergoing some changes: less slots are now available, only Full Members and up will be allowed in, and payments will be increased. Grin

The new table entry, and detailed information should now look like this:

A|Luckyb.it|fixed/monthly|0.125|0.125|0.125|0.075|x|x|x|50/m|-|N|

Luckyb.it (Thread)
Payment period: Monthly, one month after signing up.
Minimum posts: 50 posts per month.
Payments: F: 0.075BTC per month, S/H/L: 0.125BTC per month.
Escrow: No.
Miscellaneous: Maximum participants: 15 Senior/Hero/Legendary Members, and 15 Full Members. To enroll, you must have made a recent bet on the site (up to 7 days old), and provide a link to the Bet Browser page of the bet.

Source:

[...]

So, here's what's happening. The 0.025BTC slots are being removed entirely and there will be a 120-activity requirement to join the campaign. Since there is a budget imbalance, I will need to reorganize the remaining slots. This means there's going to be some jockeying again, but we've been down this road a couple times so it shouldn't be too much of a hassle, and there's good news at the end of the road. The reorganization process will be effective IMMEDIATELY and works like this:

● Users registered on or before 11-01-15 will be honored as advertised (0.1BTC or 0.05BTC).
● Senior-level payments will be increased to 0.125BTC. There will be 15 of these slots.
● Full Member-level payments will be increased to 0.075BTC. There will be 15 of these slots.
● Available 0.05BTC slots are immediately upgraded.
● 0.125BTC slots will become available as existing enrollments are paid.
1972  Other / Politics & Society / Re: When will wealth difference rules of court be officially acknowledged in the US on: January 10, 2015, 05:59:39 AM
NEVER!

Why would this every happen in the US, a democratic and capitalist society? It goes against everything the country was built upon!

I'm not so sure it really goes against anything the country was built upon, at least looking at the views of the "founders"; but regardless, it is already, and has been for a long time, the status quo.

probably never, the gap between richest and poorest has been growing for some time with no end in sight

Precisely. Which goes to his point that, as that is in effect the state of affairs, society might just as well recognize it and move on - I disagree we should go about it that way, as stated in my previous post, but it seems a fair point to make nonetheless.
1973  Other / Politics & Society / Re: When will wealth difference rules of court be officially acknowledged in the US on: January 09, 2015, 05:45:25 PM
Such as, legal action against somone some number of times less wealthy becoming illegal.

I don't think we should look at it that way - abuses would still occur, those less wealthy would still be at a disadvantage, and so on. I would much rather the legal system wasn't pay to win at all. Tongue
1974  Other / Off-topic / Re: Cryonics - Why not? on: January 09, 2015, 03:52:26 PM
What about the soul? I'm not even talking about the concept Christians believe in, but it has been proven that our bodies have certain energy that disappears after death. We have to remember that our memories are stored in our brain cells and accessed by energy impulses, so it's possible these cells keep the images only as long as the impulses are flowing, thus people, who were revived late sometimes suffer from amnesia or became disabled.
IMO there's very high probability that these people will be just empty shells after revival.
Nobody has proven that such energies are this so called 'soul'.
There's none.

That's true; but I think what he is saying is that the normal processes that keep our brain working - and by extension perhaps our memories, personality, and so on - would be interrupted, leading to damage in whomever is revived from this state. As far as I know, our brains don't exactly shut down, even during sleep or unconsciousness, so that doesn't seem inconceivable.

That was weird: seems like he's eating himself (and seen again here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0_fVzTJO-8). It all sort of reminds me of a scene in The Silence of the Lambs, where Hannibal Lecter feeds a guy his own brain. Cheesy

1976  Other / Off-topic / Re: If you had a time machine... on: January 08, 2015, 05:09:39 AM
I learn fast, besides a free society would only be full of opportunities. I mean do you know what "freedom" means?

I know its an extremist concept in these statist days, but it actually means I could do anything until I dont hurt anybody.
That means no monthy extortion or racket payments called taxes, no 2000 pages of laws and regulation, no begging for permits to the statists, no tyrranical dictators or bandits ruling over us. Free agoric anarcho-capitalism, a true and free voluntarist society.

So at worst case I would just make myself a rod of fishing and then go sell the fish on the street.

At best I would see what the trends are in the market and I would become a billionaire without paying any racket to the statists.

I don't want to put down your sense of self-reliance here, but it seems to me that you are severely underestimating how much society will change in the coming 100 years - barring any great upheaval, that is. You might be tempted to look back 100 years to help in making such a comparison, but that's likely not enough; perhaps 200 or 300 years would be more accurate.

You might call it a free voluntarist society on the surface, but underneath, you will probably have but a tenuous grasp of the culture and social norms of the time. How would you even interact with other people, when most would see you as a lunatic from another age? Further, technology will certainly have advanced far beyond our expectations: Facebook mark III? Try global telepathic messaging systems, or whatever. Tongue And even if things like genetic engineering haven't become commonplace by then, you would still be far removed from it all. In other words, a poor, destitute person of that period, having at least been born and experienced beforehand a portion of such a society, would have far better chances at a decent life than you, or most any person from this period, I'd think.

Also, even in an anarcho-capitalist society, land would still be owned by someone - at least the developed portions. So, if you actually found someone willing to deal with you, and you somehow had something they'd be interested in, wouldn't you still have some form of rent associated with your use of the land to sell fish, services, or what have you, as well as for accommodation? Perhaps not state imposed, perhaps better, but taxes by another name, nonetheless?
1977  Other / Off-topic / Re: How do you earn money online? on: January 07, 2015, 11:13:42 AM
Signature campaigns Smiley

How much do you earn per month, if that's not a secret?

If you're considering joining a signature campaign, you can see an overview of the currently running campaigns in the following thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=615953.0.

As laitela mentioned, Bitmixer.io pays 0.0007 btc per post, for a maximum of 50 posts a week; but if you don't really post that much, you might want to look at campaigns that pay more btc for less total posts instead - LuckyBit, for example, pays 0.001 btc per post, for 50 posts a month.
1978  Other / Off-topic / Re: If you had a time machine... on: January 07, 2015, 10:13:05 AM
I would go to 2100, hopefully by then the Keynesian ponzi scheme will end, and a true free and voluntarist Austrian-Economy society will welcome me where there would be no tyrants to rule over us.

Out of curiosity: assuming things go as planned, and that close to a century has passed, what would you actually do for a living? At the current rate of technological development, wouldn't you risk being hopelessly obsolete in such a society? Tongue

To anyone going back in time to buy massive amounts of bitcoin you'd throw the balance of buy/sell's off and make changes to the price too early perhaps preventing us from ever hitting the peaks we had. Wink

Quote
In chaos theory, the butterfly effect is the sensitive dependence on initial conditions in which a small change in one state of a deterministic nonlinear system can result in large differences in a later state.

Not only that, but it could also prevent or otherwise dissuade those that would eventually promote and create infrastructure for Bitcoin from ever doing so in the first place.

It's funny that you can see everyone's logged in time on their profile

Total Time Spent Online:    2 days, * hours and ** minutes.

I leave a tab open of this site sometimes by accident when online doing other things though, does that factor in or not?

No, I don't think leaving a tab open while logged in counts towards your total time just by itself - only if you are actively interacting with the forum, by visiting new pages, posting, and so on. But you can easily test that, if you want: leave a logged in, open tab with the forum in the background for 10 minutes, and then check to see how much that increased the counter. Tongue
1980  Other / Off-topic / Re: I know there is no such thing as 'free energy' but what if it was possible? on: January 03, 2015, 10:13:20 PM
This is going to sound really stupid, but our own bodies give us free energy every day we wake up feeling refreshed.

But you do need to eat and breathe, for your body to work and have energy available - so it really isn't free energy either.

besides throwing an extremely low current arc, what good is it?
