2021  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why is European Union Fundamentally doomed... on: December 13, 2014, 12:25:51 AM
Throw a 1000 years into the mix and at the end you'll have a believable union of the European countries. It'll take that long if not longer for the whole to assimilate its parts, the ingrained identities of the individual countries. A thousand years ago, it would not have taken that long because a thousand years ago, there were no video/sound recordings, images, internet etc to constantly remind people of their origins, traditions/culture.

I kind of feel like it's the exact opposite to what you described here. A thousand years ago it must have been fairly easy to use people's lack of knowledge about the "others" to further a sense of national identity and a sense of isolation, us against the world, that pretty much allowed rulers to enact whatever policies they chose to pursue, usually to the detriment of the majority of the population. Nowadays, that is much harder to achieve (though it still happens frequently enough) - but, in my view, harder to achieve not so much because people aren't aware of their origins/traditions/culture, but rather because they increasingly realize that that doesn't really matter; that whatever the differences, "we're all in the same boat".

2022  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Could bitcoin users get a piece of land somewhere? on: December 12, 2014, 11:58:51 PM
Own state creating would not be possible. But BTC users can implement BTC in some small country with the help from that country government. And then if people in that country would start to use BTC, government support - yes, after the time BTC can have great story. In reality this would be very difficult - in each country there are a lot of people - BTC implementation if funding is not state supported - cost a lot.

If I recall correctly, Ecuador was planning on creating a cryptocurrency that could be used as legal tender, earlier this year. They were supposed to start using it by the end of the year, early next year - anyone know how that is going? Of course it would be to our advantage if they adopted Bitcoin instead, but it seems like a nice step.
2023  Other / Off-topic / Re: Laser shooting umbrella !! on: December 12, 2014, 08:07:34 PM
It's a scam. They just stole the idea from the XKCD comic (http://what-if.xkcd.com/119/) and stole the video from a link in said what-if comic (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRbHDtPbHe0)

Well this may be a scam, but I heard that hoverboard is real. So I guess it may be technically possible as well.

What hoverboard? The Back to the Future style one? Smiley That one has several limitations the one in the movies didn't, but it sort of works - but how is it related to the laser shooting umbrella, considering it works in a very different way?

Anyway, it seems the indiegogo page for this has been removed.
2024  Other / Off-topic / Re: Can a man-made computer become conscious? on: December 12, 2014, 03:01:31 PM
I don't know if man will ever be able to create a fully "thinking" computer or not.
In order to do that I think we'd have to figure out a lot more about how we humans think in the first place.
So I don't believe any computer will ever become conscious.
As always, that's just my opinion.

You can't jump from a "we don't know enough to do it yet" to a "so it can't be done", without a middle step in there. Tongue

I dont know if man anc made a conscious computer   but if one day dat happens is not gonna be good for us
AI is not good for works too , lot of works gonna be cancelled  in the futur , for sure !
http://www.theguardian.com/science/2014/dec/02/stephen-hawking-intel-communication-system-astrophysicist-software-predictive-text-type

Insofar as the progress in this area frees people from simple, repetitive (and often meaningless) work, I'd say this is to everyone's advantage - or at least it will be, as soon as we get rid of the "live to work" mentality.

As to whether or not an AI would be a threat, I think it's harder to say than what people often assume. There is no guarantee it will share most/any human values, so predicting its actions might not be possible with any degree of confidence.
2025  Other / Archival / Re: Updated Overview of Bitcointalk Signature-Ad Campaigns on: December 11, 2014, 10:52:18 PM
how do i join and which is best?

Which campaign is best very much depends on how often you post, where in the forum you post, and the campaigns available at the moment.

If you make less than 50 posts a month, Bitmixer.io might be a good choice; there are no minimum post requirements, and you receive up to 0.01 btc per week. If you make between 50 and 100 posts a month, you might want to look at a fixed post campaign, which pays a set amount of btc for a set number of posts (for example, the LuckyBit campaign, GawMiners, FortuneJack, and so on). If you make more than 100 posts a month, you might want to join a pay per post campaign like Pocket Dice, or maybe wait a little for PrimeDice to return: in these campaigns, the more you post, the more you get, but they typically pay less per post than the fixed post campaigns.

After you decide which campaign you want to join (looking at the OP might help here), go to the respective thread, check if there are open spots and the relevant campaign rules, and post your entry details there.

EDIT: bitcoininformation beat me to it. Tongue
2026  Other / Meta / Re: Poll locked to account or IP? on: December 11, 2014, 09:19:06 PM
So are you telling me : if you want you can vote again and again ? It is very very strange  Huh .

I don't know whether I can. As far as I remember I voted only twice in a poll.

   ~~MZ~~

I haven't created many threads with polls so far, but if I recall correctly, the OP can reset the poll if he wants - could this have been the case? Were there many other votes cast the second time around (if you voted twice in a short time frame)?
2027  Economy / Services / Re: ➫ ➬ Lucky Bit Signature Campaign ★ Earn up to 0.1BTC every month ★ Closed - FULL on: December 11, 2014, 02:14:36 PM
i prefer the previous management...

when a slot became available i read <open>

that'z all!!!

That is still the way it works; it just so happens that the campaign is currently being reorganized, as stingleword detailed in previous posts:

There is another reorganization applicable today. Just like last time, existing enrollments are unaffected. If you are a Member and you enrolled prior to 08-12-2014 you will still be paid 0.05BTC when you qualify. New enrollments as of 09-12-2014 will fall into three brackets:

0.1BTC for Senior Members or higher. There are 20 of these slots, and all signatures are available.
0.05BTC for Full Members. There are 15 of these slots, and some signatures are available.
0.025BTC for Members. There are 10 of these slots, and you must use the original signature.

As 0.05BTC slots are vacated, the rank of the person being paid (or disqualified!) will determine the slot that opens up. If that person is a Full Member at the time of evaluation, a single Full Member slot will open. If that person is a Member, then two Member slots will open. Once the ten Member slots are open, things go back to normal again.

[...]
I went over the enrollment lists and realized I have a small problem. There are currently only three Member-rank enrollments, but i need five of them to be vacated before the reorganization is complete. Using this math, two Full Members are going to get screwed out of an opening.

Well, I promised I wouldn't do that so I won't. I also see what appears to be two Full Members that will reach Senior status before their enrollment completes; those slots could be freed up to Member status so that is what I will do. OP updated with information.

2028  Economy / Services / Re: Highest Rate 0.12BTC for 40 Post. | Jr. Member accepted!CoinPiler Sig Campaign. on: December 08, 2014, 06:21:56 AM
Can we please ask some mod to mark this thread and add 'SCAM CONFIRMED' to the title? Or close it or do something that will be visible on the first sight.
Mods don't label scams, unfortunately. The onus is placed on each user to exercise due diligence.

Actually, they have done so in the past - don't know if this has changed in time however, perhaps given the amount of scams always going on. Take for example: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=337343.

It is pity every one is attracted by the appealing title and click this link, waste their time to read this.

And we're not helping by bumping up the thread to the front page. Tongue
2029  Other / Off-topic / Re: Someone really doesn't like furries :( on: December 08, 2014, 06:13:58 AM
Reading through the news this morning, this article caught my eye, and reminded me about these forums' favorite furry

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/chi-19-hospitalized-thousands-evacuated-in-gas-leak-at-rosemont-hotel-20141207-story.html

"Several thousand people were evacuated from a Hyatt hotel in suburban Rosemont when an “intentional” chlorine gas leak at a convention led to 19 people being hospitalized early Sunday morning.
...
Technicians decontaminated the area and after conducting several tests deemed the area safe within about two hours. People were allowed back into the building around 3:30 a.m. Some conventiongoers, some of whom were dressed up as animal characters, stood outside of the building. Hundreds more were escaping the chilly weather at other buildings.

The annual weekendlong convention, which celebrates art, literature and performance based around anthropomorphic animals, draws thousands of people every year, according to the Midwest FurFest website."

At first I thought this was about the emerald green cat that has been spotted in Varna, Bulgaria: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzDZMykh9bQ. Turns out the cat has been sleeping where it shouldn't: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/11273506/Mystery-of-emerald-green-cat-spotted-in-seaside-resort-solved.html.

Anyway, who is this forums' favorite furry? Smiley
2030  Other / Off-topic / Re: Bitcoin is satanic and Satoshi is lucifer! My uncle claims! on: December 07, 2014, 10:28:49 AM
a belief is just that - a belief
It is very common place to present theories and less disputed but unproven hypothesis like the big bang and particularly a lot theories in psychology (but other sciences aswell) as facts in popular science and they are beliefed as such.

Many people take many theories as actual fact. I bet almost everyone reading this takes A LOT of theories as actual proven facts which they are not.
Actually most of what you belief based on science is not real - most of what is propagated is actually only theories.
Theism is the same - just a theory and some people take it as fact.

So why does it matter how plausible the theory is?

I think the huge following of the scientific cult is as sheepish as the religious folks. They are sometimes even just as radical. Scientific radicals and extremists. Yes, they do exist a lot but are not perceived in that way.

Well, as I said, to me it matters because it has actual, practical consequences; those are vastly different points of view, and people's actions (or lack thereof) will, in no small way, be influenced by how they perceive the world to work. The exact details of their views are less relevant, I think, but let's not forget that if you are scientifically minded, you can then proceed to explore further and refine your views (and perhaps contribute in a meaningful way to society while you're at it) - an option not open to a closed, set-in-stone view of the world that religions typically offer.

Which brings me to the next point: comparing scientific theories to theism seems to me to show a basic misunderstanding of what a scientific theory is. Would you care to explain how theism could possibly fit the bill?
2031  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: New Exchange - We need your suggestions! on: December 07, 2014, 08:41:08 AM
How about Neteller? [...]

As in Paypal, there is also the risk of chargebacks with Neteller - plus, they have apparently gone so far as to block people using their accounts to buy/sell bitcoins (and I think they explicitly prohibit this under their ToS). Still, I would also like to see Neteller and Skrill integrated into new exchanges somehow.
2032  Other / Off-topic / Re: How do you earn money online? on: December 07, 2014, 07:48:25 AM
Yeah, but becoming a brain surgeon is easier said than done.

Well, that kind of depends on point of view, right? If you have the right tools (axe, large club, etc.), and if the vict... patient is not expected to survive, you could technically call yourself a brain surgeon - of course, very different kinds of people will pay you to perform that type of operation. Tongue

Can you show me where fools with axes are paid $500,000/yr? If it was easy, I'm sure many people would have done it.

...that was (my attempt at) a joke. The fools with axes would be hired killers, gangsters/mobsters, debt collectors or something like that (too many movies, I know). Tongue
2033  Other / Off-topic / Re: Bitcoin is satanic and Satoshi is lucifer! My uncle claims! on: December 07, 2014, 07:33:58 AM
if you "believe" anything at any point you're just a sheep. You don't know shit until you actually sat down and looked at the experiments and studies carried out in detail. Not even then you know a thing. You actually need to repeat experiments to really get to know. Knowing is not such easy, lazy as believing/blindly following/have the illusion to know what you are programmed to by the system/read the summary secondary literature (mental weakling status).
You wouldn't believe how much biased and corrupt shit is propagated by some intelectuals (high priests) and people buy it and repeat it to others just because that other reputable seemingly intelligent and studied gentleman said this would be so.

Knowing a thing is rare. Believing is the commen thing. So why not believe in Jesus or elves or what ever you want to believe in if you believe in science aswell? It's the same metal weak shit. Believe in science or religion is the same same on my watch.

It comes down to: philosophy is where the real value is
(philosophers know this: science is a child of philosophy)

this goes offtopic now though.

bottom line: nothing more hilarious than people sitting on the high horse looking down at those irrational spiritual/religious people because they themselves are so much better and so rational believers in science. You're the same religious nuts, you morons!

Sure, science does take more work than most people are willing to put into it, and abuses do occur; on the other hand, you have peer review - it's far from perfect, but works. On that note, simply dismissing science "believers" as being just the same as religious "believers" is silly, in my view. Those are fundamentally different points of view about the how the world actually works: in the former, you "believe" the world can be understood, and that, that understanding can then be used to control it and shape it to our needs; in the latter, you believe you are at the mercy of a creator, and whatever happens, happens because of an arbitrary, unfathomable "god willed it so" (depending on the fairy tale of your choice, of course).

In this sense, I would much prefer people to at least have some basic understanding and interest about the world around them (and, who knows, maybe even contribute to that understanding), rather than giving it all up and go live alone in the mountains somewhere waiting for their favorite savior (or whatever).
2034  Other / Off-topic / Re: Bitcoin is satanic and Satoshi is lucifer! My uncle claims! on: December 07, 2014, 04:07:26 AM
I belong to an Hindu family but I am not a very religious person and I believe in science and tech more than anything!

you are saying it yourself but you are unaware.
you fail to see what most fail to see: science has become a substitute for religion - the professors and (corrupt) scientist are your priests.
Maybe that solves said dilema?
Science in reality is no substitute for religion or spirituality.

No doubt some people treat science like a substitute for religion - but in reality, it's so much more than that. You don't need to, and honestly shouldn't, blindly trust what scientists and professors tell you; you can look into their answers for yourself, and upon finding any mistakes or gaps in that knowledge, add to those answers until a better model of how the world works can be constructed from the whole process.
2035  Other / Off-topic / Re: Is Far Cry 4 the best yet? on: December 06, 2014, 10:21:08 AM
I was playing this recently and figured that it was almost the same but realised it is but better. The environment was much improved and the animals crazy... I think this game should be 2014 best.

I haven't played Far Cry 4 (or any of the others for that matter), but I found Zero Punctuation's review of the game to be quite funny: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/9930-Far-Cry-4-Review (Far Cry 4 - F**k Eagles). In it, he complains mostly about the game being Far Cry 3 ++, not being able to play as the protagonist's parents, boring game play, and eagles. Cheesy

2037  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: [SCAMMER] Quickseller/ ACCTseller sold me a hacked account on: December 06, 2014, 09:06:13 AM
I have not been able to get it in a signature campaign since (the intended use). Therefore, I cannot make my investment back.

You still can. All negatives you've received are untrusted so all signature campaigns are still going to accept you.

So this isn't a valid arguement.

That's a pretty broad generalization; different signature campaign managers look for different things in their participants, but I wouldn't be surprised if most would be weary of accepting someone with what is potentially a stolen account - I know I would be, and would likely rather not have anything to do with it, in order to avoid it reflecting negatively on my campaign.

EDIT: but give it a try zedicus - LuckyBit is currently open. Smiley

Strong people might understand. That's not the point. The point is that there is no strength strong enough to stop death, the resurrection and the judgment.

Smiley

Your quote was partially correct, I've crossed out your errors influenced by your religious drug addiction.

I sort of disagree with your correction; I think even death might one day be stopped - at least natural deaths due to old age, as well as those caused by diseases. Once we know enough about how our bodies work, we should in theory be able to rejuvenate and repair them (of course, even if possible, that is still far, far away in the future).

[...] and those who a few hundred years ago that believed the earth was flat believed an error of fact. They still where wrong in their belief. Just because you don't believe something does not hide you from the truth

No one has seriously believed the Earth to be flat since the times of the ancient Greeks. And more to the point, what makes you believe your god is real, and not one of the other tens of thousands of gods? Also, out of curiosity, is it so hard to imagine yourself not needing to believe in any of these fairy tales to go on living?

If I don't believe in your god, I don't face resurrection or judgment.

My god (flying Spaghetti Monster) can make earth in less than 6 days, and it certainly doesn't need a day to rest.

Your god is weak.   Smiley

I just wanted to let you know that I will be eating your god at lunch time today. Tongue
