Hi,
Trying to wrap my head around the way this payment system works. Do I have to mine here 'steady' and constantly to get rewarded or can I use this as a backup to my regular pool?
For example if Eligius goes down and it failsover into this pool, and I work here lets say for about 1.5 shifts. Will I we rewarded fully for the time I spend hashing here or does not sticking around somehow penalize me or lower the payout for the time I do spend here.
Thanks
BitMinter rewards you fairly for your share contribution. So whether you mine 'steady', or only occasionally, makes no difference. Your expected payout here is exactly what you would expect for the time spent here. There is no penalty (or benefit) in mining steadily, or mining occasionally, here. In other words, it is fair as you would expect. Because of the PPLNS share system, you will need to wait about 10 shifts after you STOP mining for all of your earnings to fully accumulate. Then, of course, another 120 blocks or so before your final payment becomes confirmed just like with most pools (unless you use the pre-pay perk).

One more question, am I correct to assume that the 'shift method' is superior to the PPLNS,N=24h: of triplemining. If I do some work there, but then leave without them solving a block in the next 24 hours after my departure, I get nothing essentially for the time i did work, as I was not there working in the 24hrs prior to the block being sloved.

Same problem exists here. If you mine for a shift, then stop, and the pool finds less blocks than average (or no blocks) within the next 10 shifts (20 hours or so), you will get less than expected (or nothing, in the case of no blocks found). That is variance; in this case, the 'bad luck' kind. Conversely (and equally likely), you can run into a bout of good luck in which the pool will find more blocks than average during that 10 shift period after you stop. In this case your payment will actually be more than expected for the work you put in. In the long run, variance/luck evens out. Which is why I was careful to use the term "expected payout" in my previous response. If you want/need to be paid for every share you submit, no more and no less, regardless of pool luck, your only option is to find a pool offering PPS (pay per share). You will pay a hefty fee for that (3%-5%). It's an option to consider, though.

I can't stay on again, bouncing to backup.... stratum, might be getting filtered IP changed again.
I didn't notice any attacks today. Maybe this is something else, or there was a small attack that I missed. Any error message? Wasn't getting anything other than it couldn't find the address... think there was some general internet flakiness going on, my ISP was out for an hour yesterday morning, then after that came back up, there was a handful of sites unreachable, and some very slow. Has been staying on bitminter overnight.

Most users are back on the main server. We have 300-400 users still on the backup server, and their hashrate is not showing on the website. They should switch over eventually. The DNS TTL is 10 minutes, but some network equipment just ignores this, so it may take a while to update for some users. Just keeps saying it's dead. Nothing's changed in the config has it?

Any better now? After the data center issue the ddos attackers renewed their efforts to attack the mining server. Some users have been having issues connecting during the attacks. The main thing is to not attempt to reconnect to the mining server too quickly over and over, which happens if you restart the miner many times. Host not found? Probably a DNS issue. Could have to do with your ISP outage.

Seems the las bit of trouble did hurt the pool as I thought it might ;-(
Ws around 418Th and since then is holding steady / slight bouncing around from 377 - 385, I'm almost afraid to think of what it will look like when the new equipments out around the end of next month.

Can somebody explain for me (or link to an explanation) the reason for the extra long shift that ended at 2014-01-03 02:10? I understand some server moves have been going on ... were we down for awhile? My bfgminer crashed at that time and I only submitted minimal work for that shift before I realized and came back up.

Yes, the data center outage caused mining to stop for a while and that's the reason we took longer to finish one of the shifts. Try the latest version of bfgminer, hopefully the crashing when being disconnected is fixed.

Ugh, last 3 days have been brutal with one thing and another, monster blocks, bitminter troubles, local troubles. Should be making about 0.07 BTC/day but 3 day total is 0.047 at bitminter, with only about another 0.03 at the backup pool.

I feel your pain! I am suffering the same. I have only made 0.05BTC yesterday out of the 0.1214BTC I should be making every day.

Yep - grim, grim, grim, over the last few days. Still, luck is luck so hopefully we'll see some green on the stats and a few nice quick blocks soon.

Seems o be holding steady around 375-380 which means we did lose some people / around 38th. Hope we can bouncee back bu that means an infusion of new miners. Also sucks we go from 12 blocks a day down to as of right now, 2 ;-/

Hashrate has dropped some. We are down to 6.5 blocks per day. 2 in a day can happen with bad luck, but it's not the new norm. The hashrate will go back up again.
