I'm just wondering how this will change the dynamics of the forum - will we see people chasing merit by posting in areas that are full of high-ranking members (merit sources) in the hope of advancing? This could have the unintended effect of lowering post quality in what are usually high post quality areas (technical discussions etc).
Not a positive or a negative really, I'm just interested to see how merit will develop.
Apologies if this has already been mentioned - I can't bring myself to read through all 44 pages of posts!

So can I...continue posting, ooooor?
Only if the next post of yours is revealing all of your alt accounts. The gangsta's eyes are always watching.
Top to bottom? Ok, so there is
exus, HCP, anakrea, iqi94, franky1, Fattcatt, glennmatthews, Xynerise, hilariousetc, alexanderisora, Coding Enthusiast, TheQuin, curiosity81, SM23031997, peterparker9191, onleines, Dario3000,...
Oh wait, that is not the list of my alt accounts, that's the list of merit I've given. My bad.

Interesting idea. So this merit system is similar to a social media like correct?

I like the idea because it will make it harder for individuals to farm and sell accounts.

Now they sell not only accounts, but merrits as well

Exactly. They just upped their price tag and kept the competition out.

I already don't like the way clicking on +merit takes you away from the thread.  Can you please have it open in a new window?
Agree 100% with this.  A new window, or maybe just code in a little box next to the post where you can type the Merit you want to give and then hit Give or something.
Instead of posting you 100% agree, you should have given me 100 merit.  Smiley
Press your middle mouse button when trying to open a link to open it in a new window. Problem solved.
I don't really see why clicking "+Merit" should behave differently than "Report to moderator". I indeed use my middle mouse button most of the time, but when I click it normally, I don't want to see a new Tab opened.

So can I...continue posting, ooooor?
Yes, keep posting Smiley I was just curious, nothing more. I won't sue you!

Is this a bug?
Deena (Activity: 84; Jr. Member) has 0 Merit.
HoundRogerson (Activity: 70; Member)) has 10 Merit.
I assume HoundRogerson's status is correct, and Deena's is wrong. Is this a bug or a leftover from the negative merit points earlier?

This might not be fair for new people, I don't know if others will ever consider to give merit to newbies. Guess I had to been registered here like 1year back to get some kind of "good" positions. Juniors and newbies are often treated poorly and seen as funny guys around, not taken seriously.

Totally agreed and you have got 1 merit from me because of it.

I've been in your position hundreds of times and getting to Member was pretty hard. Trying to give always something useful to the community it's not easy but at the end of the day we have to agree with the merits system. I see tons of nonsense posts, adding little of nothing to the conversation just to rank up and even more stupid threads about stupid things like"Is Bitcoin good for your throat?"

Jokes aside, keep working and you will rank up. It will be harder, but if you are good, you will get where you want.

Probably. A new user may try to collect 10 points by writing a large number of posts there. It will be hard, but not impossible.

Wow, begging for merit in the merit announcement thread. Thanks for that! I just laughed so hard I shot the chocolate milk I was drinking out my nose.

You have framed an historic moment. The first merit-beggar begging right in the middle of the Temple of Merits! We can now expecting Merit-Begging to become one of the major standard behaviors of the forum, until it will have to be forbidden, just like begging for coins.

You keep bringing up the "abuse".
How are they going to abuse you? By ignoring you? That is an abuse?

Using the power to unlimited merit your friends (or alt accounts) while other users are withheld from receiving merit points, while they may post equal or even more qualitative posts, I call abuse, yes. It is again, like the trust system, subjectively determined by a few chosen ones.

Who exactly is abusing it this way? Don't be shy, spill the beans.

Also, given that sMerit is effectively pointless after Legendary status would it not be worth considering making it only giftable to ranks below legendary, that way it at least encourages the progression for some of the lower ranks? Granted some legendary members will want to accumulate it as an accolade.

Legendaries can (and may be more inclined to) spread sMerit to others, so it's not pointless.

I think you perhaps misunderstood my point, I am well aware the Legendary ranks will have much sMerit to spread around compared to other ranks. My point is that once you have reached Legendary rank you have nowhere left to go after that, if someone then gives you some merit, it is effectively wasted on your account.

That's not quite correct. I still get 0.5 sMerit for each merit, and I will spend those sMerits.

Not easy to sell merit points, anyone can check from where you got merits and it will reveal identity of merit giver and if it's look suspicious can be easily caught.

Thank you for your intention anyway Smiley Your answer actually proves my point. It will take an endless time for anyone to get the Merits necessary to rank up, since sMerits are so extremly deflationary. Every time someone sends sMerit half of them get "burned". If you send me 10 sMerits I will get 10 Merit + only 5 sMerits that I can use myself. This means sMerits supply will soon get down to zero. So again, an endless time to rank up might be not a rethoric figure but a precise depiction of reality. I understand that there will be a few "elected" ones who will be able to create limited quantity of sMerits out of thin air, but whoever they might be, how will they use their power of choice? I hope this will not lead to a sort of feudalism in Bitcointalk, that would really spoil any pleasure to be here for any person with some dignity.

You seem to be in good spirits about it. Am surprised you're not pissed like all the others that just missed out. I mean 4activity away from becoming hero! that must sting some? Shocked

Well, I AM pissed off for missing out the Hero Memberhip for 5 days and 4 activity, but I have a style in my way of being being pissed off, and BTW I have stopped long time ago to take even life seriously - life is NOT a serious issue, it's an overrated gadget Smiley

I think you’re assuming status helps only scammers. Jumping in ranks helps you get on a sig campaign and determines how much money you make. No one will “check where you got merits“ if you're not trying to scam them.

So far the new system is not thorough, I think it is necessary to introduce changes into the new rules that will keep the fight against spam, but will not block the development of ranks.

If you want to be a merit source:

Collect TEN posts that have not received nearly enough merit for how good they are, and post quotes for them all in a new Meta thread.

Can someone show an example on a curation of 10 posts that qualify someone to be a merit source?

If you want to be a merit source:

Collect TEN posts that have not received nearly enough merit for how good they are, and post quotes for them all in a new Meta thread.

Can someone show an example on a curation of 10 posts that qualify someone to be a merit source?

I think the OP in this topic indirectly did a pretty good job.  Roll Eyes There's some more correct examples to be found by simply browsing the meta section.
