I disagree that this new system widens the gap between cheaters and honest users. It appears to make it harder for shitposters to rank up. So in the long run quality posters should benefit by having fewer competing cheaters.
Ok, simple question: Can you guarantee that people who (subjectively) deserve merit will get it and can you hinder people from buying/trading merits? That's what I meant by people who don't exploit vs. cheater. I'd think that there are more people who don't try to exploit than people who cheat but any way you look at it, you punish those who make a few valuable posts every time nobody recognizes them. Those who buy just buy >> gap gets wider.

I just translated the thread in the Spanish local section, you can find it here. Well done! That should earn you merits.

i'm walking around btt, reading, watching and can say that this merit system changed this forum forever, and not at the good side. today it is absolutely another place, not that was yesterday. Today it is a forum of one little group Hero's/Legendary's and their 'sixes'. Very bad... If i would be Satoshi i will never more enter this place. it is really disgusting to watch that what was happened in last days... And i don't care if you some hero fanatic will give me "red trust" for this post. Coz i'm writing now from thousands of people, who are scared by this little group of 'nobodies' which means themselves like "gods...
We are all PEOPLE, do not forget THIS
Not totally agree with your ideas. The forum have been spammed recently with tons of shitposts by farming accounts. Therefore, it should be cleaned somehow, and Theymos did it. Personally, I don't think the current solution with recent released merit system is a perfect one, but it is truly a good one. This one will inspire users to post high-qualited threads. However, I also think that there should be two sides, which users can depend upons them in order to ranked up their levels. (1) Increasing their merit points by their own activities, such as one or two merit point for each week will be automatically allocated to each account by the forum. (2) Getting gifted merit points from others for their good-qualitied posts. That's is the current aproach of merit system. Please give me merit if the thread is meaningful and contributive one. ^^

It is a problem indeed. In the same way (1) you found those three useless posts from that guy which rightly didn't receive any merits, (2) you can find, if you're willing, three or more excellent posts made by some other guy which didn't receive any merits either even if he deserved.
Find them, point me to them, I'll merit them (or you can merit them yourself, you know?). There already are several threads by people that are looking to be pointed towards good posts so they can give merit as rewards. Lutpin is talking about people like me, go to my thread and submit them; there are multiple people watching my thread and meriting posts within it. Good posts will not go unnoticed with very minimal effort. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2819141.0There you can submit your posts, another's posts if you feel they are undervalued and we will merit them accordingly; I will even go back through and provide extra merit to posts I feel I have enough merit to give them their due.

You are free to leave and create an own forum to prove you can do better.
Basically nothing has changed, there are no posting restrictions at all, so stop complaining!
If there were an alternative most of us would be gone already probably. At present however Bitcointalk has a monopoly position. And the crypto scene shouldn't belong to only a few, but to all of us.

Does this mean I won't get legendary until I get 1000 merit? I was going over 1030 activity next week (still hero at 1022 before the merit system).

I've said before it's harsh for Hero members with over 775 activity to get only 500 merits, and your case is the worst I think! Yes, you'll need 500 more merit points to be Legendary. I'll go through your posts and grant some merits if deserved.

If there were an alternative most of us would be gone already probably.
There are multiple alternatives to Bitcointalk. Here are a few examples: bitco.in/forum, forum.bitcoin.com, r/Bitcoin, r/btc, And the very many other Bitcoin/Crypto related subreddits. Hell, there's even the many Git repos of Bitcoin related projects or the dev mailing lists or Slack/IRC channels if you want to be technical. You even mentioned wanting to fork Bitcointalk a few days ago, well here's the software. Or maybe you'd prefer this one. The truth is that the majority of people are on this forum because you can't earn money from any of those alternatives. I absolutely welcome the idea of those people, those only here for money, fucking off and moving to another forum to spread their shit. I sincerely hope that the merit system is a step towards this. I think that people who say this say it because it's convenient. You have a million and one other options for conversation, if that's what you really want - but it's so much easier to complain about moderation, or the systems in place on one than actually try to be a part of the other. Right?

I like this new system, as I prefer quality over quantity. It just seems like there are no merits in my local thread yet I guess there aren't a lot of high ranking members there that are regular There they would be extra useful as those posts generally don't count for signature campaigns even if they are high quality. This way there would be some reward for posting high quality posts in local threads. I am not sure if I would be eligible to be a "source" of merit points that I can bring to my local thread as I have only been here for few months and I don't want to be greedy.

Thanks for links to different forums. However, if I leave Bitcointalk forum, I have to start from zero at another. So sad to imagine the scenario like this.
And please, pray tell, does it matter about where you start from if you are going to a forum for good conversation? Granted there may be some restrictions in place, but I can't imagine that these are anything worse than what you went through to start posting here. So why did you go through it here? Oh wait, I know. Because your rank was directly monetized, and that is something that you can't get on other forums. So why bother, right?

I'm sure that's the case for most people: they're here for money. But, to be fair, this is the most popular bitcoin forum by far. Going to another forum (or worst, creating a new one as suggested by others) is impractical because there would be to few people there. We could say BTT has the monopoly. (Do not take this as I'm supporting the spammers, I'm just saying what I just posted)

What about Legendary members who now have the same Merit as those who have 1,000+ less activity than they do? The system is not perfect, but nothing stops Theymos from tweaking it later.

It may be the case that this forum is the most popular, however that doesn't necessarily mean that there would be too few people on others. Other than perhaps bitco.in/forum, each of the sources I posted there has hundreds/thousands of users that you can converse with about whatever subject takes your mind. I would certainly say that that is more than enough people to have a decent back and forth, and I personally have had extremely good times on forums with much less of an active population.

Haha I was going to take it personally but you have only 952 more activity than me, so I'm sure you don't mean me But seriously, we can't rank up so it affects us far less than unholycactus. Maybe a change should be made if another rank is created soon at 2,000+ activity and 2,000+ mertis or so

I did not suggest to create a new forum, I just got fed up by his whining. If he does not like the new rules he should leave and/or prove he can do better. I mean there are now post restrictions for members with lower ranks. He is just pissed, because the cannot earn that much anymore.
