Mipsterz: a space for Muslim hipsters

(CNN)Ever heard of "Mipsterz"?

The term originated in 2012 with a small group of friends in New York who jokingly called themselves Muslim hipsters. Though they hesitated to form an official group -- "hipster rule number one: never self-identify as a hipster" -- Mipsterz quickly evolved into an online community, and the group has garnered international attention.

Much of that attention came in the form of a heated debate in 2013, amid the huge popularity of one of its videos featuring women wearing hijabs.

The video, shot in Los Angeles and New York, shows young Muslim women taking selfies, skateboarding, fencing and eating ice cream -- doing all the things that young people like to do. Layla Shaikley, the video's art director and one of the women prominently featured in the video, says it was meant to serve as a "self-biography" for people outside of their community.

The response to the video was passionate on both sides. Supporters applauded its depiction of young Muslim women expressing themselves. Detractors shamed the women for participating, saying the video objectified them, according to Abbas Rattani, producer of the video and co-founder of Mipsterz. Others argued that the video just showed Muslim women trying too hard to fit in.

"We're so incredibly obsessed with appearing 'normal' or 'American' or 'Western' by way of what we do and what we wear that we undercut the actual abnormality of our communities. ... And in all of this, we might just lose that which makes us unique: our substance," Sana Saeed wrote in The Islamic Monthly.

Despite the controversy -- or maybe because of it -- Mipsterz eventually made it out to the suburbs. Parents of Muslim children started reaching out to the group, Rattani says. Their kids felt foreign at times, the parents said, but after the video went viral, their classmates saw that being Muslim could be cool. Some even wanted to be Mipsters themselves, Rattani remembers hearing.

"Mipsterz has created a space where young Muslims can have open discussions, share their experiences and not be ashamed of who they are," Shaikley says.

Though the group's goal is not to address Islamophobia, "in a way, we are sort of combating Islamophobia by just being ourselves," Rattani says.

Thousands of Muslims and people of other faiths have joined the online community, which exists as a Facebook group and a group email list. But they don't all agree on the definition of a Mipster.

Shaikley describes a Mipster as "a young Muslim American just trying to find a space for themselves unapologetically ... reconciling multiple identities and doing it like a rock star."

Rattani is less comfortable committing to one definition, calling it "abstract."

"We don't take ourselves too seriously, and we love individuality."

The Mipsterz don't realize it yet, but they are secret agents infiltrating Islam. When the standard Islamites try to do violence against them, all they need to do is flip over to their Muslim training and take out the standard Islamites who are attacking them.

Islam doesn't do anything at all, whatever it may be. Islam can't do anything. It is when Islam gets into the hearts and minds of people that Islam does something. So, it is the people who are doing it, not Islam.

Smiley
If this were true, then there is nothing wrong with Mein Kampf.  There is nothing wrong with Justine, by the Marquis de Sade.  There is nothing wrong with cartoons of Mohammed.  There is nothing wrong with an order by a leader of ISIS to behead a hundred children.  They are all just pieces of paper or images on a screen, after all.

Not only what I said above, but the converse.

If this were true, then Islam cannot be "good."  It cannot be the "perfect religion."

Because it's just pieces of paper.  They cannot have attributes such as "good."  Only people can.

They consider themselves to be Muslims. What makes your authority on declaring them 'not Muslim' any different from them declaring you 'not Muslim' because you don't interpret the instructions the same way they do?

Many of the so-called Muslims attacks aren't even from Muslims and they just can't describe in Islam in their own way. For example, there is a verse which was released *at the time of war* which says kill people who spread mischieves and who come to attack you unless they are in peace with you. They just exclude the words after but and tell "look here, Qur'an tells to kill non-Muslims" etc... and they attack many innocents including Muslims. This is not the way even if they are claiming. Claiming but not following doesn't make one a follower. It is obvious they are doing it for their own gains especially political gains and non-Muslims are definitely involved. They are doing far different than what Islam actually tells. FYI, I am not the only one with the view "ISIS and other such groups are contradicting Islam", there are many others too. The problem is they are targeting people with less to no knowledge in Islam and/or people who are very poor and/or people who like to do these sort of bad things. They just brainwash people which is very hard to eradicate. Once brainwashers who tells to kill innocents with disinformation are eradicated, this problem is easily solved.

 Games Muslims Play

Given Islam's violent history and the unfavorable contrast of its oppressive practices against 21st century values, Muslims are hard-pressed to repackage their faith in the modern age.  Some of its leading apologists have come to rely on tricks involving semantics and half-truths that are, in turn, repeated by novices and even those outside the faith.

This is a document (which we hope to improve on and expand over time) that exposes some of these games and helps truth-seekers find their way through the maze of disingenuous (often blatantly false) claims about Islam and its history.

“If Islam were a violent religion, then all Muslims would be violent.”

“Other religions kill, too.”

Muhammad preached 'no compulsion in religion' (Qur'an: 2:256)

The Crusades

“Muhammad never killed anyone.”

The Qur'an Teaches that all Life is Sacred (Qur'an 5:32)

"Muslims only kill in self-defense.”

The million dollar wager that "Holy War" isn't in the Qur'an.

"Verses of violence are taken out of context."

"Islam must be true, because it is the world’s fastest growing religion."

"The Qur'an can only be understood in Arabic."

Once brainwashers who tells to kill innocents with disinformation are eradicated, this problem is easily solved.

Except for the fact that the Koran has numerous explicit texts which these 'not Muslims' are easily able to work from.

Besides, let's not ignore the elephant in the room or, rather, the rape of a small child. How can any organised religion claim to be empowering and honouring and non-violent if the one person at its very core married a six year-old little girl and, if he didn't do before he certainly did later, raped her at age 9.

You cannot possibly defend somebody who raped a 9 year-old little girl and you certainly cannot hold them up as being the exalted human that Islam requires you repeatedly declare him to be.

Your prophet marries and rapes a small child and your religion approves of this.

Don't cite 'cultural differences' at me, either. It is indefensible and to pretend 'things were different then' is a reasonable way to compartmentalise the appalling nature of the crime, is to absolutely ignore the reality that at no point in the history of our species is an adult raping a small child justifiable or excusable.

I said you that website spreads disinformation. Anyway, it's your choice whether to believe that disinformation or not and you are free to do so. It's very bad when people deliberately do such things.

Rape and sex at will is different. Also the exact age is unknown, however, it is said to be between 9 amd 12. It is also known that sex was after she reached puberty. Please don't mix rape here.

In the HISTORY of the world, who has KILLED maximum INNOCENT
human beings

1) "Hitler"
Do you know who he was

He was a Christian, but media will never call Christians terrorists.

2) "Joseph Stalin called as Uncle Joe".

He has killed 20 million human beings including 14.5 million were starved to death.

Was he a Muslim

3) "Mao Tse Tsung (China)"

He has killed 14 to 20 million human beings.

Was he a Muslim

4) "Benito Mussolini (Italy)"

He has killed 400 thousand human beings.

Was he a Muslim

5) "Ashoka" In Kalinga Battle

He has killed 100 thousand human beings.

Was he a Muslim

6) Embargo put by George Bush in Iraq,

1/2 million children
has been killed in Iraq alone!!! Imagine these people are never called terrorists by the media.

Why

Today the majority of the non-muslims are afraid by hearing the words "JIHAD".

Jihad is an Arabic word which comes from root Arabic word "JAHADA" which means "TO STRIVE" or "TO STRUGGLE" against evil and for justice. It does not
mean killing innocents.

The difference is we stand against evil, not with evil".

You still think that ISLAM is the problem

1. The First World War, 17 million dead
(caused by non-Muslim).

2. The Second World War, 50-55 million dead (caused by non-Muslim).

3. Nagasaki atomic bombs 200000 dead
(caused by non-Muslim).

4. The War in Vietnam, over 5 million dead (caused by non-Muslim).

5. The War in Bosnia/Kosovo, over 5,00,000 dead (caused by non-Muslim).

6. The War in Iraq (so far) 12,000,000 deaths
(caused by non-Muslim).

7. Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine, Burma etc (caused by non-Muslim).

8. In Cambodia 1975-1979, almost 3 million deaths (caused by non-Muslim).

"MUSLIMS ARE NOT TERRORISTS
AND
TERRORISTS ARE NOT MUSLIMS."

Please remove first double standards on Killings.

Genghis Khan was not a Muslim. He was a Tengrist, with strong influence from Buddhism. Genghis Khan reigned in the 13th century AD. At that time, the Mongols were not Muslim or Buddhist. A part of the Mongols became Muslims later (mostly the Tatars and the Bashkirs), while the Eastern Mongols such as the Buryats and Khalkha accepted Buddhism.

Actually, Genghis Khan was basically shamanistic. It seems that he was very spiritual. He DID, apparently, consult both Muslims and Christians, as well as other religions, at various times. He seemed to be quite liberal with religious freedom among the people he ruled.

For example, there is a verse which was released *at the time of war* which says kill people who spread mischieves and who come to attack you unless they are in peace with you.
Yeah, *at the time of war*, they are *at the time of war* right now, don't you know?

No, they are not. The war they are doing is not allowed by Islam and in fact, I don't know whether it should be called a war. They are just killing many innocents and Islam always has said don't compel anyone to become Muslim and don't hurt people who are in peace with you. Most of the people they killed haven't done anything wrong to them.

Rape and sex at will is different. Also the exact age is unknown, however, it is said to be between 9 amd 12. It is also known that sex was after she reached puberty. Please don't mix rape here.

Now you're just being an apologist and you are also ignoring the commonly accepted fact in Islam that he married Aisha when she was 6 years old and had sex with her at 9.

That it has to be said he waited until she was 9 years old before he 'consummated' the marriage, as though that somehow makes it any less repugnant, is still a tacit acknowledgement that he is a child rapist.

An adult having sex with a child is raping them because a child is incapable of informed consent, even if a child has been conditioned to believe that it is something they want to happen it is still an adult abusing their position of trust to care for and nurture a child in order to satisfy their own selfish and grotesque sexual urges.

Child rape is about power and control and no sexual act by an adult to a child can be described as anything else other than a gross abuse of the significant power the adult has over a child.

Stop trying to down-play the reality that your religion celebrates a middle-aged man who had sex with a little girl who was 9 years old.

There, I have written it twice so you know not to simply ignore what I am saying to you. A hand-wavy, "yeah, well, she was probably at least 11 or 12 so, you know, totallyokbecausehewastheultimateprophetright?

ISIS and other such organisations do kill Muslims but you are right. They ain't Muslims.

Well, once you change humanity, please let us all know.

Meanwhile, I have found this interesting analysis of "Games Muslims Play."  It would seem that every one of these logical errors has been presented in this discussion by Muslim advocates.

I said you that website spreads disinformation. Anyway, it's your choice whether to believe that disinformation or not and you are free to do so. ....

I understand your point of view, however when one defends dogmatic beliefs, the defenses will fall into well defined categories because, well, they are defenses of dogmatic beliefs.

The above list is certainly a good rendering of the commonly heard defenses of Islamic beliefs, including those which you propagate.

You are missing two points

 - Sex is not rape if it both is willing to do.
 - A human is a child when he/she is under the age puberty. Once a female child is mature, she can give birth to a child. I understand you are talking in general but it is not a fact.

Actually it is not a good list.

 - "Muhammad never killed anyone.”

Wrong.

 - "Muslims only kill in self-defense.”

Wrong. Swahabas fought for self-defense and that was the common argument. This is twisting. That argument can't be used to tell Muslims only kill in self-defense because there are bad people in Muslims too.

 - "The Qur'an can only be understood in Arabic."

Wrong. The common argument is translations from Arabic is often mistranslated. Qur'an can also be understood in other languages but when it is translated, sometimes mistakes are there. Changing that sentence to Qur'an can be understood better in Arabic.
