2241  Economy / Reputation / Re: Battle between titans. DT against DT, why? on: February 22, 2019, 06:25:46 PM
What you will find in most of these situations is personal opinions/feelings/vendettas.
A lot of those feedbacks could be taken as a note on how that Forum user operates or a characteristic of their forum use that people disagree with. If neutral trust showed under the profile as a 3rd number from the beginning people may have been more inclined to use that option, as a lot of those tags aren't related to a legitimate scam in the end, more often a perceived slight or injustice.

What I do like about it is that it has had people actually opening up the trust page to read through it, as opposed to just taking it as face value. Since the tweaking of the DT system though, as it was encouraged by theymos, people have been adjusting some of their feedbacks, as well as burying the hatchet to some extent.

That sucks. I'm interested to see how they respond, seeing as your issue is actually something failing, I imagine it will be rather quick. I never did hear back when I was trying to troubleshoot the lame board, but it may have been low to no priority as it was in spec.

Reading through Pangolin's support info, you may get away with only having to ship back the hashboard, but they might not have updated the information lately. Definitely better than sending the whole unit in for repair.

FYI, my total customs+duties on the unit (with the USD51 discount code) came up to CAD68. So all in all, very positive experience so far. I'll post an update once the unit has run for a few hours on wintery Canadian sunshine electricity.

Nice one of those low tax provinces, I get hit pretty hard on everything I bring in. Enjoy, so far my 2 have been pumping the heat nicely to fight the ridiculous cold.
2243  Other / Meta / Re: How can we protect Newbies from getting scammed? on: February 22, 2019, 05:23:24 PM
This has been a long ongoing discussion, the forum just hasn't taken any steps towards educating new users. I thought we were close when theymos solicited opinions on a welcome message, as far as I know that hasn't happened yet. I think that every new tab should have it's own welcome/how to pop-up when you first join, with the option to disable after 1 full activity period.

For instance: In messages "Exercise caution when receiving solicited or unsolicited advice in PM. Do not assume everyone has good intentions regarding advice/downloads. Public discussion is best apart from personal/private details" I would also have forum acceptable practices regarding the use of PM's under this message.

What I don't understand is why people don't apply the same common sense they do in real life on the internet as well.

In short people are stupid - at least we start out that way. We know nothing, but have an amazing capacity for learning. There's a few ways to do this through experience alone, can be a rough path but generally leaves a lasting impression. We can be shown/taught, welcome messages/warnings are a good way to go about this for people entering a new environment. I've always believed in trying to do more in helping/preventing, could be because I was one of those stupid people until I learned through experience.

Senior members should guide newbies and tell them what they should do and what to avoid to make their experience here pleasent and safe.
How to do that!... Senior members, should stop arguing about merit system, DT sytem,, and focus more on helping newbies and answering their quetions on boards like "Beginners & Help", "Development & Technical Discussion", "Bitcoin Technical Support"
However, it is not always up to senior members, newbies, also, should make an effort to learn how to secure their wallet, after all it is a new technology and you should learn a lot befaure starting using it.

There are plenty of members of all ranks out there offering legit advice and assistance. Not everyone is good at offering that advice or troubleshooting so personally I'd rather not see everyone lining up to "help". The problem lies in the naivety of a newbie, who gets scooped up by a scammer before someone with good intentions happens upon them. It's amazing how many people have coins but haven't learned how to secure them, especially after the FOMO of 2017.

2245  Other / Meta / Re: [Proposal] Enhance the requirements for ranking up to Member position on: February 22, 2019, 04:10:27 PM
I can't say that I'm really worried about the amount of "members". Considering it's a low rank with an easily attainable requirements those numbers look good for the past year, to me. When I look at your ratios for member/full member it makes sense to me. That is the first change from low requirement merit to substantial. 10 from brand new -> 90 required from member to full member.

So I'm obviously playing fast and loose with the numbers. With a requirement of 9X the merit required the ratio is nearly 9X the amount of "members" being created against the number of "full members". That's just what jumps out at me.

Overall I think things have improved drastically, especially thanks to the people out there breaking up merit rings and eliminating account farms in swaths. So for these actual stepping stone ranks I'd leave it as is. I personally would eliminate the jr. member rank. This would allow people a good amount of time to be actual newbies, take the time to learn and participate while they wait on merit or activity depending on the user. Obviously anyone can still go and get the copper membership if they need to.

Yes, I asked blacklisting from DT1 and DT2. It works only for DT1.
Errr...on side note, you might want to PM klintay, I see some strange DT negative on your trust wall.

Okay cool, well in the unlikely even tin the future I wind up on DT1 I'll figure something out to make us both happy. For now I'll just keep your feedback relevant to me in case you do get dropped entirely from the system.

To my short lived but very serious trust issue of this morning. I saw it but as I just finished up a night shift and was eagerly awaiting the sweet relief of sleep; I did something crazy... let it go until I had time to check things out and deal with it. It wasn't my issue necessarily so I figured I would deal with it when I had time. I was more worried about the apparent memory loss I was suffering as I couldn't recall having made a 3.5 BTC trade in the middle of the night.

Looks like I don't have to bother doing much, they is free to use his  feedback as they see fit; regardless of how inaccurate it was. Was glad to see that in the time it took me to write a 7000 page post with no punctuation on the failings of DT and how I hate the internets get a few hours of shut eye that they system functioned as intended IMO.

Thanks to everyone who checked into this, whether action was taken or even just an investigation -nothing wrong with being thorough- as it did free up some legwork on my end. I might reach out to them but I doubt it, at most I'll leave a neutral documenting this interaction, as it's personal/opinion not necessarily trade related; apart from the false risked amount.

Well for now the pillow beckons, just thought I'd take a few moments to chime back in properly.

Hijacking over.
2248  Economy / Reputation / Re: Remove marlboroza (me, me) from DT2 on: February 20, 2019, 12:57:05 PM
Blacklisted on request

Sorry I'm a little slow on the uptake at times. Does this mean that marlboroza was blacklisted by theymos upon requesting it? Hope so as they shouldn't have the title/role forced upon them.

I'll also feel better about my inclusion so I can see their ratings, while not contributing to forcing DT upon them.

Awesome. I'll take 2, connect them to your nipples,~snip~

Don't forget some good quality clamps, don't want it sliding off now.

2249  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mining Giant Bitmain Posts $500 Million Loss in IPO Financial Filing on: February 20, 2019, 12:42:58 PM
And exactly the launch of the BM1397 that is going to "outclass" as they say the not even 6 month old BM1391 is one reason I think it's not the R&D costs alone that made a 500 million hole or if indeed that's the case prepare for another larger one.
If the costs for the 1391 were to blame for the deficit in Q3 the newly launched 1397 will also leave its mark in the Q4 as it would make simply no sense to develop them both in Q3, wouldn't it?

It definitely could. Hard to say how they went about trying to achive their most efficient design. They may have ran the R&D simultaneously, or started on the next design immediately after the last. All I'm saying with this is that it would have been a huge chunk of upfront cost, and a very likely factor in the difference between profits and loss between quarters last year.

Quote
And...the 500 is losses, not costs for R&D so this has not only taken in all the profits from other activities but it has dug a hole, and now they are most likely going to experience lower profits from mining (probably only half) and around the same development costs.

You right, everything slowed last year slowly and steadily as far as hardware and mining profits. What is surprising is that all the way into October apart from 1 Diff adjustment it was rising. This had to take a tole on them as much as everyone else; but they still were pulling in a good amount of revenue from their pools and cloud mining business. They are well diversified to earn any way they can off people. For whatever reason people still point miners there for daily payouts, and rent hash off them, it just wasn't enough to overcome their total expenses; whatever they were.

Quote
Would the same miners that stayed away from the s9 or the competition (the m10 for example) in September buy now when profits are at an all-time low and drive up income from mining gear sales?
Not really seeing anything like in the hashrate....

They would I think. Hashrate follows the market so we have been in a pretty steady decline for a while, this has made mining more profitable than it was in September of last year. So all of this gear is looking good right now, so much so that some competitors had begun to raise prices. The big boost to Bitmain at the moment is that they sent out a ton of coupons hoping to push a massive amount of hardware sales starting Feb 26. assuming BTC stays below 4400$ (can't recall for sure). They also have BitDeer cloud mining running hard since December, they have different tiers for what Gen miner you run and charge the maintenance fee based on that. This gives them the ability to possibly earn off the maintenance fee by actually using the efficient gear and charging for the inefficient.

When it comes down to it it's hard to know how the actually account for their held/stored coins; or when they dump some to raise liquid capital. They may be in no trouble at all and simply pull from a reserve when they need the cash. Like I said before it will be interesting to see what their next couple fillings look like.

While poking around it looks like Canaan decided to try for an IPO in NY, they let the HK application lapse. There was next to no information about it from the little I read but that's another one to watch in the coming months.

Have there been any more reports of issues with the PSU's. I'm kicking around the idea of an S15/T15 not to sure yet. I'll have to do some more more testing but I believe I've seen my lines hit above 240 when testing after installs.

I did have to have a check back to see what there APW7's were rated at to see if I felt like risking it, but they were rated up to 264V.

My decks arrived a few days ago, and were packaged great for the journey. Haven't had a chance to open them up and admire them yet.
Still eyeballing that auction, gotta see if I can swing another deck.
2253  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mining Giant Bitmain Posts $500 Million Loss in IPO Financial Filing on: February 20, 2019, 04:31:34 AM
~snipped my quoted text~

September ended with BTC at 6500 and Bshit at (lol, had to double check ) at 550$.
So if they did lose 500 in the 3rd probably it's way above 750 or even 1 billion for Q4.
What matters is the long run and if they did start loosing that much probably the entire profit has evaporated till now.

~snipped my quoted text~

The s15 was announced in November and it took Bitmain more than two years to launch a new miner, so I really doubt they had spent most of the money on research and development just 4 months earlier.
Probably they had it ready for production even at the start of the year.
Second, I doubt the booming sales for it, the hash rate shows that prices have made a serious dent in miner sales (we're at August levels right now).

As far as their losses for Q4 they could still afford to hemorage another 500 Million and break even on the year. If they ended the year at break even with 2 efficient chip designs that blow the competition out of the water they're starting ahead in 2019. We'll just have to wait and see in their next filing how Q4 went. While I don't doubt they were struggling with liquidity for a bit, I think there sales team cut the right deals/discounts at the right time to being an influx of cash in.

It may have been 2 years to launch a completely new design, but they did continuously tweak/rebrand that previous model. Also they sat at the top of efficiency for that chip size as far as they were concerned so no need to redesign what's working. It was really only early 2018 that any of the hardware companies started pushing for 7nm designs, the S15/T15 chips themselves were announced in September, so that Q3 could have been a lot of the first run costs. Here we are just as few months later and they have another chip launch.

I do think hardware sales still picked up for them, while people weren't expanding and growing as fast they were still upgrading to newer more efficient models while prices are low. Hashrate is a hard indicator in the hardware sales, as a lot of people/mines tried to hold on as long as they could last year in hopes the market turn was around the corner.

also. seems the article cant do maths

think about it.
imagine you get $500 one week. $500 second week. then you have to buy groceries and rent the third week. would you go to your spouse and say "i declare a $500 loss." or would you say "i stil have $500 after 3 weeks"

Okay glad I wasn't the only one reading it that way.  Love the example
2254  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: New buildout with buysolar has entered stage 2. on: February 20, 2019, 03:29:56 AM
Hope you don't mind me bringing this over here.

What really hurts me is now I have to think for four people with 575 of my 617 th.
Vs two people with 120 th forces me to be very conservative   With the big chunk 575 th.

I'd say you've deployed a pretty good strategy overall. Good mix of gear, couple different coin streams, and I believe you use a few pools to balance variance. I'm going to assume all parties involved have been happy with your deployment to date or you wouldn't be growing so fast in this market. Do you have any one off gambles going anymore? If I remember you used to throw at Johnny's, and another that had the block finder rewards from time to time.

Just a heads up with those coupons are you sure you can go higher than 300$ for the T15, checking the "coupons" tab on the Bitmain product page for the T15 it says 300$ or less. I'm pretty torn on what to grab myself at least I have a few days to ponder it over, and here I thought I was done buying gear for a while.
2255  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Bitmain Release new 7NM Chip and Antminer S17 & T17 on: February 19, 2019, 02:42:40 PM
Well I'm not sure how the de minus is calculated, when coupons are involved. Bitmain did just dump a lot of coupons into accounts, up to 395 for a S15 and 300 for the T15.

Definitely changes things a bit, and makes me think these units may be closer than we think.

^^

Well put, I do hope that your programming example rubs off on some of the newer members that may be finding themselves on DT. I must say I've been surprised by some of the members I've seen making it in, not that I make a point of who's what. Just that some seem to think they have to prove themselves once there, or be completely rigid.
2258  Other / Meta / Re: Why were my threads moved? on: February 19, 2019, 12:36:41 PM
So here's a free bump and a little more info as to why I feel you should at least receive a response. The quoted post below shows that dogie has been a long time active member whose posts are really substantial and useful, so much so that this is used as a reference to one of the unofficial rules of the forum #24.

It occurred to me that I should write a little about this in case anyone's wondering about what dogie's doing, or why other people are getting banned for somewhat similar activity:

Ads are typically not allowed in posts (outside of the signature area) because they are annoying and off-topic. It is especially disallowed to put ads or signatures at the bottom of all of your posts. Except for traditional valedictions, which are tolerated but discouraged, signatures are for the signature area only.

However, if you are using the forum as a publishing platform to host something really substantial and useful, selling ads in that substantial work is allowed. To be eligible for this, your post must be in a topic that you started, and your post must be substantial and long enough to make the ad seem entirely insignificant. If in doubt, ask me.

I'm still flabbergasted that this has taken so long to get a simple response/explanation. Either move the threads back, or move all other review/setup threads to the same location. Maybe there's more to it, if so just drop an explanation.

While here, if you don't mind me asking why did you stop making review/setups?

2259  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mining Giant Bitmain Posts $500 Million Loss in IPO Financial Filing on: February 19, 2019, 10:37:47 AM
R&D really takes a huge price off of a company's profit, though once complete and applied on next products with improved capabilities and specifications, it pays off big time. This is true on every company on the tech industry and not just Bitmain, so I guess their newer line of miners are the reason for a huge chunk of losses on 2018, but see this getting turned around once the first batches are shipped.

Agreed, with their current Miner already back on top for efficiency they'll be raking in the BTC/Cash pretty quick. If this next Chip design hits specs as well, they'll be back to flooding the market. Obviously time will tell on the reliability of those machines but at least in the short term their investment in the design is over, and it's time to show some strong returns. It would be interesting to see how things look after Q1 2019, this way even if Q4 2018 was shit (likely with the BCH drama), they'll have some hardware sales helping offset this. I'm guessing this time they'll report right up to the day as opposed to leaving a quarter for the next time. That is if they want the IPO to gain traction.

Not to mention they pulled in a bunch of people with their re-branded cloud mining.
2260  Economy / Reputation / Re: A question about hacked/sold account of @Apriand on: February 19, 2019, 10:18:43 AM
Actually that account doesnt really hacked, but i get chaeted about that account. I was busy that time, and need money to pay my loan with Parodium. Then someone call me in telegram (he is from my country) to help me. He give me little money to pay back my loan but he want that account under his control for a month. all deal and he call me almost everyday, but after a month my account not back to me and he runaway, all social media (telegram and whatsapp deleted by him) and i lost my account. May be he already sell thats account, but i sent pm for apriand about who control that account also no respond.

Well the thread linked in OP takes you to the above post. I snipped out the relevant part where I  read what led to my post.

At no point did I say the account was sold by Parodium.

I mentioned that the original account holder "apriand" either took a small loan/payment from whoever (off forum member via telegram) held/took the account to repay the on forum loan from.
