921  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Do you hate the PI's USB ports like I do? here is a fix for us miners!!!!!!!!! on: November 02, 2014, 06:42:12 PM

Which miners are you using?

Primarily HF boards =O ... those most recently gave me the most issues.
922  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Do you hate the PI's USB ports like I do? here is a fix for us miners!!!!!!!!! on: November 02, 2014, 11:13:40 AM
I notice you've not mentioned this, but were you using a powered USB hub?

Yes, I use powered hubs, yes Ive ensured that the pi is not being backfed power through the uplink port on the hub ( so yes Ive done the mod to the hubs ).

Ive tried almost everything one could think of in regards to the hardware side. Diff cables, modded hubs, .. etc..
The USB 1.1 forcing is the one change that made everything 100x better for all my miners.
923  Bitcoin / Hardware / Do you hate the PI's USB ports like I do? here is a fix for us miners!!!!!!!!! on: November 02, 2014, 08:45:24 AM
So, most of the miners Ive ever tried on the PI absolutely hate its USB ports.. Ive had stability issues, CRC packet tossing problems, LIBUSB timeout errors ... enough to drive anyone insane w/ a PI....

A year or go w/ some miners back then I remedied the issue by adding:

dwc_otg.lpm_enable=0 dwc_otg.fiq_enable=1 dwc_otg.fiq_fsm_enable=1 dwc_otg.fiq_fsm_mask=0x3

to my /boot/cmdline.txt file ... it fixed the issues at the time...

>> to today, Ive had issues w/ newer 'faster' miners. Like the ones mentioned above, on various different hardware.

Well, after wanting to throw all my pi's out or just putting 1 per miner just so they 'might stay stable' ... I just knew there had to be / hopefully was a magic setting that would fix it all....
The rest of that puzzle was solved today (hopefully, so far it is)...

add this to the /boot/cmdline.txt as well:
dwc_otg.speed=1

This setting forces the USB ports on the pi into USB 1.1 mode and I believe disables some other highspeed 2.0 features as well.

As it turns out, the PI hates having a USB 2.0 or higher port plugged into it, it causes enormous latency issues w/ devices(in the form of packet loss, the exact thing CGMINER complains about). Maybe it just hates USB 2.0 devices period, I dont know, but it really hates hubs.

After running my miners for an hour or so, ALL of those CGMINER complaints, USB timeouts, CRC packet tossing is now COMPLETELY GONE!!!!!!
This would normally happen once or twice every 10 mins, or 10 times every 10mins...was completely random. Now ALL GONE.

I would go so far to even say you could probably get away w/ a shitload of miners now on the pi w/ this setting. Enough till the CPU of pi starts getting maxed anyways =P

Im truely amazed by this... =)

I hope this helps some of you guys out.

NOTE: I hope the story is the same in the morning, of course, many hours later and they are just as stable =) ... will follow up on this. But for right now, Im extremely excited!

928  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is old 3.5 floppy safer than USB drive for cold storage? on: October 06, 2014, 08:55:48 PM
Bout as durable as a human head vs 50BMG...
929  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is old 3.5 floppy safer than USB drive for cold storage? on: October 06, 2014, 08:53:59 PM
No, FDD , definitely not ... these moddern FDD media dont last longer then a couple writes. Shit gets corrupted so fast.
This aint like the quality FDD media we had back in the 90's , today its all junk.
930  Economy / Speculation / Re: This is why the price of bitcoin is dropping on: October 05, 2014, 04:34:13 AM
I highly doubt thats the reason OP....

There hasnt been news on ETF's in months now... at least that Ive seen. Correct me if Im wrong.

I think its panic sellers & megamines dumping which Im fine with. Once we hit around $200 many miners, small time, medium farms & small farms will start powering down their crap. Once that happens its lower diffs for all of us. Expect this to happen even moreso once we hit sub $200 down to $100, it will be glorious.
Asic production will come to a halt & manufacturers will have dried up substantially under $100 ... the way it should be.

Bitcoin has a long road ahead of it at this point. The foundation is still being laid for adoption & general use.
The way I see it, we are just finished w/ the .com bubble of Bitcoin, now begins the true growth which is longer but more mature.

That is, unless USD completely implodes on itself in the next year taking out other major world currencies with it, then Bitcoin will easily hit the moon for that reason alone.
But, I have a feeling USD will take another 10 years, at least, before it reaches that.

So, heres to keeping the faith in Bitcoin alive as we enter its next era of true innovation 'beneath the radar' of press & hype and all this bullshit weve seen this year.
931  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How Low Does Bitcoin's Price Need Get to Make People Stop Believing? on: October 04, 2014, 07:00:05 AM
One thing we do know for sure is eventually all fiat currencies go to 0 , I for one strongly believe Bitcoin will always be worth more than that =)
932  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How Low Does Bitcoin's Price Need Get to Make People Stop Believing? on: October 04, 2014, 06:52:18 AM
Believing in what? ... that Bitcoin works as advertised? FYI... Bitcoin works long as the price is greater than 0!!!!!
But at 0, it loses function to move value around easily... at which point someone will buy some up or it will go down in history as pehaps one of greatest inventions regarding currency this decade and past century by a small group of the only smart people left in this world. LOL...
933  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why do You Trust Bitcoin on: October 03, 2014, 09:08:54 PM
The whole point is .. its trustless....

Well, technically till someone has over 50% of the network hashrate, then you gotta trust them. =P
Thats probably its largest shortcoming.

It doesnt matter who created it, its self sustaining(long as its being mined), fully open source and takes a true majority of participants to change ANYTHING about the way it works. Not even the devs have ultimate say in how it works. The devs simply propose changes and if over 50% of the network agrees to use the new release, those changes go live.
If it were closed source, then yes there would be major cause for concern.
The motives for its creation are obvious since its open source... After inspecting the source you can see for yourself exactly how it works, see if theres anything 'seeecret' happening behind the scenes. Since its been peer reviewed thousands upon thousands of times, its safe to say bitcoin itself functions as advertised.
Leaving the final motives for its creation: to get rich(at the expense of noone and only if it succeeds) & to provide the world w/ a monetary solution that benefits everyone.

But other than that... it just fucking works, its the only 'everything laid out on the table for all to see' software thats actually never been "hacked" .. well except for its early days when it was freaking alpha and had little / no net worth =P

Hell even "closed source"(everything is behind closed doors) banks / cc systems(modern monetary systems) etc.. cant claim that feat.

When you think about it, its quite fucking monumental.
934  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Ready to admit bitcoin is a failure? on: October 03, 2014, 03:13:01 PM
OP: Ready to admit you obviously dont understand Bitcoin at all?!
The problem doesnt lie w/ Bitcoin, it lies with; human nature & how weve all been brainwashed by current monetary systems that have been in place for a hundred years.

Just because its price is going lower due to pure speculation driving it, does not mean its a failure.
Last I checked the blockchain is ticking away, it doesnt care about price or speculation ... it just fucking works, BEAUTIFULLY. So nothing w/ Bitcoin has failed.

Bitcoin still functions as to move value around the internet(around the world) at blistering speeds weve never seen in any currency(completely decentralized), no matter its price point. Well, long as it aint $0.0000000000000...
Its true price point will be determined by how many people actually want to use it for doing just that.

Wait till key world monetary systems start crumbling.... people might actually wake the fuck up and realize theres been something better for years and use it.
935  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: STOP BUYING MINING HARDWARE on: October 03, 2014, 06:12:55 AM
People wont stop till the price hits around $100. Then shortly after diff will come crashing down. Then there will once again be a huge demand in hardware =O ... its a cycle that happens over and over.
Also people are stupid, you know like those who own apple products.. thats kinda like foolish mining hardware purchases(at a huge loss mind you) that the 'masses' are doing now.

The other thing people dont realize is that buying BTC directly rather than mining it... helps its market price go up.
Buying mining hardware then cashing out only fucking puts downwards pressure on the price, but like I said above....once it crosses a certain lower price point, its great for all miners because of the decreased diff that follows =)
936  Economy / Speculation / Re: 2014: The Worst Year for BTC? on: October 02, 2014, 07:11:37 PM
Price wise, it hasn't been great at all. But as far as adoption and growth, I think it's been very positive. The long term trend for bitcoin continues to look positive.

Guess it depends on what side of the fence you sit on. If you sit on Bitcoin just hoping its price point skyrockets, then yes price sucks for you. But, if you hoping price goes down so you can stock pile more.... price has been awesome for you this year..
937  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why consumers are not adopting BTC on: October 02, 2014, 07:10:31 PM
People need to realize that consumer adoption will be fueled & driven by the failure of major world fiat currencies.
As long as fiat remains deceivingly 'stable', noone will give a shit about how corrupt the monetary system is and how fucked in the ass they are getting by banks / cc's etc...

When banks start crumbling & fed starts hyperinflating our currency ... people will finally wake the fuck up and want out of the 'scam' and a decent amount of them will want btc & to use it.

Till then everything is just driven by speculation of traders.

So just, Waaaaaiiittt ffoorrrrr iiiiitt.............

I wont disagree with this but it just admits that btc doesn't have any of the incentives for the consumer until the crashes happen.

Actually, incentives are there, people just dont realize it. Everyone sees the 'news' about bitcoin which is mostly portrayed as bitcoin being evil .. by the press. I think as a community we get spoiled by how fucking easy it is to move 'value' around the internet using bitcoin, that alone is an incentive.

That is an incentive for US not for the average dudes.

Its an incentive for EVERYONE, the OTHERS dont realize this incentive at all.

People dont like change and sometimes it takes horrible circumstances before they realize the true value of what was sitting right in front of them the entire time.

940  Economy / Speculation / Re: 2014: The Worst Year for BTC? on: October 02, 2014, 05:53:37 PM
Worst year? are you talking price or adoption?
Because as far as price goes, sure its one of the larger declines, its like been a really slow bubble pop year =P
But last I checked the price is still above the most recent bubble($266) and definitely above its lowest of $0.

Adoption has been quite impressive though, more vendors jumping on board, services popping up like wildfire, governments taking it seriously, etc...

The way I see it, we are entering its more mature growth cycle. Its quite similar to the .com bubble. There was huge hype around the .com bubble which ultimately lead to a massive round of losses... but shortly after is when innovation & real value was being created for the web, now ".com's" are worth more than they ever were - meaning what was once just a hype driven bubble, has steadily grown into something used by everyone, everywhere, everyday...

We are at that very beginning of perhaps, but true & real innovation for crypto... is my guess.
So, the above is what bitcoin always has going on for it 'behind the scenes'

The only thing that will cause it to go super high in any short / midterm will be the complete implosion of major world fiat currencies, primarily USD. Once it gets inflated into the sky, at incredible rates, people will be 'cashing out of USD / other fiat' into some other form of safe haven. Bitcoin has become part of that 'safe haven' realm in such occasions. The secondary effect of this failure, will be more people seeking other ways to transact outside of USD ... bitcoin fits the bill for this really well.

Basically, what it comes down to.
For there to be true demand behind bitcoin's price ... the critical mass has to WANT to use it as an alternate currency. What will get us there quicker is us in the community who actually give a shit about what Bitcoin offers the world, actually getting off our asses and 'spreading the good word' about it. What will get us there REALLY FUCKING FAST, will be world monetary systems failing every day.

So, either the community decides to take action, which some have(hence is part of the reason why bitcoin is used as much as it is today and responsible for a decent chunk of its price point) and spread the word OR the community continues to sit back and wait for the demise of major world currencies. Of course, theres doing both =) ... which I imagine some of us are!
