Just an update for everyone who doesn't couldn't get all their asics up and running.

I ordered 3 jupiters from KNCminer and they arrived last friday.  And my cowoker ordered 1 jupiter. 

These are great products once you get them up and running, but boy was it a painful experience.
The issues I had with them are below.

1.  The fans on the heat sink falls off easily.  When You hear things rattling in the box, you have to open them up and put the fans on the heat sinks properly.  And they use torx screw drivers so that was a pain in the ass, luckily I had a torx set around the house.  I had to open all 3 jupiter boxes to put the fans back on at least 1 of the heat sinks on each of the units.

I had only 1 unit with all 4 asic boards running properly the others did not report any status on the status page.  After resetting the fans, I took a closer inspection.

2.  On 1 of the asic boards, the serial cable (not the power cable) CRUSHED one of the pins on the asic board.  I took the unit off line and straightened the pin on the board and then the ASIC came on.  I was pretty happy about taht.

3. Another asic board on another unit, the asic board's serial cable was defective or had some impedance issue.  I swapped the 2 cables (the ones that were the same length) and brought that asic online.  At this point all my asics were working properly.

However One of my coworkers who purchased an jupiter as well couldn't get his controller board to power on.  The asics were all powered though since he saw the fans were spinning.

4.  My coworker debugged on the on board pins and realized that there was no power going in to the controller.  So he took apart his unit and looked at the soldering on the power connector and realized it was faulty.  He touched up on the Power connector solder and the controller now came online.  the man spent a good 6 hours on this.

These were some of the issues that came up.  I hope this helps some of the people having similar problems.

Wow, that's unfortunate and I hope mine do not arrive in that condition.

Couple of things.

Did you contact KnCMiner with all of the above information?

Did your coworker just void his warranty by soldering the board?  

 I got sick of debugging after a while and was considering an RMA, then I decided to look at the hardware instead of the software.  And that's how I ended up fixing them. 

My first email I told them about my problem and what I have already tried to fix, and they gave me some canned response about how to enable the cores, which I clearly told them I've tried it already.  So definatly no help.  After I fixed it I did tell them about how I fixed it.

My co worker likely did void his warranty but I doubt they'd know by looking at the board itself so I don't think there is nothing stopping him from sending the damn thing in if it was to ever break.

 

This sucks.  Completely unacceptable on a >$7k USD device.

To be honest I think people who are hosting their units getting around 380ish gh/s definatly have problem with at least 1 of their asic boards not working for some reason or another.  Though I had a small sampling size of 4 jupiters.  Only 1 worked out of the box ( still needed firmware upgrade though), the other 2 were doing 380 with 3 / 4 asics status with temps up.

A trick in debugging btw is let it run for a while then feel up the heat sink, the heat sink that's not warm means that asic is NOT hashing.

This is why you pay for hosting thru me, I give each box my loving attention/end of a stick till they work

Instead of them rushing out crap because you've got a couple of whining asses... it would be nicer if they could fix the problems and address QA and shipping issues. I know some of you are in this to make your money back this week, but for some of us, we would prefer our ASIC to last more than past the next difficulty change.

This reminds me of the pick two saying: price, quality, speed (time to receive product)

I don't think BFL every picked any, but I think KNC has great price, I'd just rather have quality than them tossing a bunch of half working shit in a box because avenger is crying.

All they need to do is run each one for an hour. Then they wouldn't ship crap. An hour is nothing, they could run it on their own account for all I care, if it means the rig I get works and isn't a box full of faulty boards.

From that last report it doesn't even look like they are visually inspecting them.

I'm with you, Quality control is everything...and all it takes is hiring an inspector and a little testing. Nothing to slow the process down significantly.

Next difficulty will be very close to 400M or perhaps a bit over it. Your estimate is way too low. This will be a jump of +50%.

your theory seems to be true though..  my one board with the dead die runs significantly hotter than the rest and that is with it hashing at 75%

can't see anything with the eyes that stands out, and while it hashes at 75% not really worth it to keep shutting things down to fudge with it for now

maybe RMA it when KNC gets out of the woods

me too have a completely dead die but all my fans where in place (i've checked while unboxing).

this happens for the two jupiters I own. (so one bad asic slot ech jup)

the common thing is that both the "flaky" asics are marked with a #3 stickers.


edit1: i've asked to hno (OrSoC eng) on irc channel it there's a relation between number on sticker and quality and he said a "weak one", but he didn't say everything he knows imho (and I can understand him)

Oh, you cant blame Avenger for holding them to their confident promises that they made over and over. That is their mess completely. They seem to think that one rig displayed on 30th Sept. hashing over the spec is worthy of claiming ALL rigs are similar. A great many aren't close to spec. We didn't pay for a lucky dip. ALL rigs should meet the min stats.

If anything I said meant diddly squat to KNC, they would have been in full production over the weekend.

It seems all they are doing now is cutting corners upon cutting corners, anything to save some money. While their customers lose theirs. Unadulterated, ruthless greed.

As work day is now over in Sweden, earliest I am likely to see my unit is now Wednesday (and I very much doubt that). So since the 15th October, I will be down ~8BTC (currently $1,402) in lost mining revenue. I'll never see that back, thanks KNC.

Not for me. All my boards have #1 on them. Three of them now on their way back to KNC via a RMA return.

Im trying to bridge the ethernet connection on my computer so I can login to my Mercury unit.
But I dont know what IP to hit in order to get into the config.

So say I directly connect my Jupiter to my laptop via ethernet, does anyone know what IP the machine will try to assign itself and what Windows might give it. Say if I try to bridge ethernet to ethernet?

1. undo the bridge
go to your connection properties on the laptop(of the actual internet connection, not ethernet), and turn DHCP ON under the ipv4 settings. assign it an ip address.
2.download advanced ip scanner, and prep it to scan the range you just used on the laptop.
3. cold start the miner.
4. Run the IP Scanner.. it will show knc after it finds it...takes about 30 seconds. you will need to scroll down the list to find it.
If it doesnt show right away, scan again right away.
once you have the IP, type it into chrome address bar, use admin/admin, and go directly to the networking page to program your IP in before anything else, or you will have to sniff it out all over again if you reboot for any reason.

IMPORTANT: remember to turn DHCP OFF (uncheck the box)on the miners GUI Networking page before you attempt to save the info.

Might try to get bridging working on an RPi but there's work to do on the truck, on the car, on the pumphouse roof, and a cold front is heading south this way, not to mention adding tantalum caps to the Merc Asic module and testing.

Drat, dropped my whole network again.

Tried bridging RPI with wlan0 and eth0 on same network 192.168.1.0/24.  I had been using the RPI for a mining proxy but shifted that load to another.  Stock RPI.  Added a Cisco USB 802.11g adapter and it came right up and was assigned an address.  Added route "route 192.168.1.x (the eth0 IP) wlan0".

Then I woke up an old WinXP Home laptop having an address on the 192.168.1.0 network but plugged into the RPI eth0 port.  On that I added a route "route add 192.168.1.y (RPI wireless IP address) eth0" and I could ping that address.

When I ran "route" no options on the RPI it showed a route with the computer name of the WinXP!  So, the RPI had communicated with the WinXP laptop.  But when I tried pinging the gateway of network 192.168.1.0, which of course is 192.168.1.1, it failed.  I wasn't getting forwarded on the RPI.  

So on the RPI I tried "sysctl -w net.ipv4.conf.all.forwarding=1" which I got from here (http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=52246) but it still didn't forward.  so I tried going to a separate net as he had done, changed the eth0 port on the RPI to 192.168.2.x and tried to add a route between the two subnets on the Cisco E900 router but that's when my network crashed.  Have it up now and still trying.

you might try staying off the 192.168.1.0... just use 192.168..1.1 for gateway, and 192.168.1.(2-245)for clients. the only one with DHCP on should be the server

Web server is down, pool is up. Pool is what matters however I'm sure they are aware of it and are working to remedy the web server.
