Just so it's clear - the black components you very clearly see here:

<snip>

EQUALS

The numbers you see next to the words "Temp":

<snip>

These components are about 2 to 3 inches away from the chip and the temperature reading is 58C  Shocked

Can you even imagine how hot that chip is in it's core?

That far away from the chip, the readings are almost useless.

But as I said, it was done by design. KNC hiding their shitty engineering.

I think you are only partly right.

In the jupiters the temperatures listed in that screenshot are the VRM temps, note that there are 8 seperate and different readings.

The temperatures listed in this screen are the ones from the sensor nowhere near the chip

Look at those temperatures  Shocked

I said that the temp monitoring components were far away from the chip because KNC probably knew there would be overheating issues.

Maximum operating temperature of the BMR46x series is 125 C.

http://archive.ericsson.net/service/internet/picov/get?DocNo=28701-EN/LZT146435&Lang=EN&HighestFree=Y

Elenelen, when you get a chance could you please read the numbers on the two black 8 pin packages near the side of the board and post them here ?

You are right. That is why those chips shown circled in red in the original post are not used for core temperature measurements.

What do you propose they are measuring way out there on the edge of the board?

What makes you think they are temperature sensors ? And why would there be 2 ? Let me guess … they are measuring each others temperature ? LOL

Lets get a read on the part number on the chip before we speculate further.

I had checked it in the past, they are temp sensors.

VRMs of Ericsson, say 125C as max but they shut down way before, at 100C.

I had blown at least 3-4 of them because of overheat.

Nowhere close to 125C as mentioned by the manufacturer.

i urge all neptune miners to not use the grey thermal pad n metal thing on top...i'm willing to guess that this will fry out your vrms way quicker...i left that grey pad on my nov. mods and oc'd it and the smd caps are now almost black...so imagine what this will do to your unit with even higher power vrms and heat...just a warning to ya'll

Take my warning as just that...upto you to figure out what is best for your unit Smiley

I concur.... and remember same. those things act like blankets
It may be best to remove every one of them, and re-attach the plate so it DOES contact ALL VRM's with paste
Die-electric compound on all the pci connections may save you trouble as well. http://www.amazon.com/Permatex-22058-Dielectric-Tune-Up-Grease/dp/B000AL8VD2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1403372942&sr=8-1&keywords=dielectric+compound

Here is a datasheet for a typical remote diode temperature management/fan control IC.

http://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/lm96063.pdf

Note: "The LM96063 is remote diode temperature sensors with integrated fan control that includes remote diode sensing. The LM96063 accurately measures: (1) its own temperature and (2) the temperature of a diode- connected transistor, such as a 2N3904, or a thermal diode commonly found on Computer Processors, Graphics Processor Units (GPU) and other ASIC's."

These type of devices typically integrate with an on die thermal diode.

On the issue of BRM46x thermal design constraints, the spec says 125 C. Not 100 C, not 105 C. Looking at the data sheet, it looks like the device temperature is reported via the PMBus and may also be subject to configuration via a configuration file:

"This product is designed with a digital control circuit. The control circuit uses a configuration file which determines the functionality and performance of the product. The Electrical Specification table shows parameter values of functionality and performance with the default configuration file, unless otherwise specified. The default configuration file is designed to fit most application needs with focus on high efficiency. If different characteristics are required it is possible to change the configuration file to optimize certain performance characteristics. Note that current sharing operation requires changed configuration file. See application notes AN307 for further information."

Is anyone having problems with Neptune's shutting down due to thermal issues or is this yet more FUD being spread by haters and envious ne'er do wells towards KNC ?

I am so curious to know how many of those finally left their Datacenter ,er ,warehouse for delivery.
Well this guy got his:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=170332.msg7415397#msg7415397

And then bitcoinorama xstr8guy got his
http://forum.kncminer.com/forum/main-category/hardware/46873-first-received-neptune

No wait, he was just talking about the first guy.

So on record we have a massive 1/1200 shipped.

Once again, well done knc for not misleading customers and completely keeping the misleading bullshit commitment lying you made 2 days ago to ship all Batch 1 this week.

We salute your integrity!

I had my team span out to all the UPS/FexeX ports and steal any boxes coming from KNC.

If those are in fact temperature management/fan control chips they are almost certainly sensing temperature via connection to an on-die temperature diode. See my earlier comments on how these temperature management chips actually work.

I figured you'd be lurking somewhere nearby RoadStress … you are never late to a KNC FUD party and your merry band 'o gentlemen can not be far behind. Now that we have OKAVNGR and RS in play, where is the raskul when you need him ?

If we want to start discussing bitcoin miners that you could cook breakfast on, lets start with that howler the SP10.

There is no way to read anything on those VRM-boards: completely covered with the aluminum plate.

For quite sometime I ran the system in factory-default: but 3 of the boxes have high temps on the first VRM (about 106 C). This is partly because of the position of the boxes in my server-room (re-arranging them gives high temps on other devices), and partly because the aluminum plate isn't pressing equally on all the VRM's (especially the first VRM on all boxes has problems) >> So I screw the plate tighter on that side (which worked quite well).

Still... I have tuned down a few VRM's to 450 Mhs instead of 475, for the time being (I will buy some additional Fans to solve this).

That's not easy at all. ... This because the large aluminum plate has an |_|_| shape (3 fingers).  The middle-finger is holding the Tower, the rest is shaped over the VRM's......  removing the plate, needs some other plate to fasten the Tower.
