At the end of the first innings, Sri Lanka led Ireland by 591 runs and four wickets. Ireland's batsmen will face a big test in the second innings against Sri Lanka. However, with the number of runs that Sri Lankan batsmen are collecting, Sri Lanka can have a hope of winning this match series.

All the Sri Lankan batsmen batted well, but Ireland stumbled early in their innings. Sri Lanka collected 591 runs for the loss of 6 wickets. They then declared the innings. I thought Ireland's batsmen would also be able to bat responsibly. But this is not the case. Ireland lost two of their batsmen for just 4 runs. Murry Commins fails to collect any runs. Andy Balbirnie returns to the dressing room with just 4 runs. If McCollum and Tector, who are now at the crease, do not play well, the Ireland team will face a big problem. Expect a big innings from Tector. Tector can be considered as the most experienced and talented batsman of the Ireland team.

Ireland already lost four wickets and only got 74. That is certainly not good for them. From now on, they will have to be in survival mode. They are still trailing by more than 500. And I also can quite confidently say that four of the very important players, that they had been back in the hut. I don’t see any chance for Ireland to even be able to draw the match. Sri Lanka is in a real dominating position.

There is a strong possibility that Ireland will have to follow on. Sri Lanka is most likely going to win the match by an innings in the end. It is likely that Ireland thought that this would be an easy track to bat on, and that it would be a pleasant experience. This is certainly not the case for them at the moment, however. In terms of their performance, they haven't done well. As a result, there is almost no chance that they will even be able to draw this test match.

It is my understanding that a lot of people are not expecting Ireland to go down so easily as I expected. However, I don't think they will be able to provide too much resistance.

In the one of one test match against Bangladesh, somehow the team performed well in the second innings and avoided the innings loss. This time scenario looks completely in favour of Sri Lanka and this gonna be a innings win for Sri Lanka. Only through experience the performance gets better and now Ireland is at the learning stage. Maybe over the years the team will play better in test matches.

@Sithara007 it’s a disappointing performance from the Ireland player’s, because I felt that they would at least put in some fight against the Lankans but they meekly surrendered the match. Lastly this abject performance shows that they’re yet to improve in this format, and those positives we saw earlier were only temporary and now their coach has to work on them a lot if he’s to improve their performance.

Now we will have same result in second test as well because we can't expect improvement in just few days from Irish batsmen on this surface under these conditions but still good experience for them which will help them for improving quality.

That's possible but left-arm orthodox Prabath Jayasuriya bagged a 10-fer and a total of 16 Irish wickets fell to spinners only, so there must be something for the spinners.

Anyway, an inning defeat is always a humiliation for the losing side but Ireland is new in tests so it's fine as long as they are improving their game plan against spin, we know spin conditions are challenging for even SENA.

There's nothing particularly exciting because this was expected. But I respect their impressive efforts as Sri Lanka won by an innings and 280 runs - congratulations to them! Their bowling and batting display was truly superb. Thanks to standout performances from Karunaratne, Kusal, Chandimal, Sadeera and Prabath Jayasuriya.

Ireland has yet to improve their game and they have a long ways to go. It will take time for the Irish team to improve.

I knew that the Irish team was not in good form, but their performance in this test match was just pathetic. I don't know whether it will be a good idea to have matches between such lop-sided teams. Some of their best players were unavailable for this match (Josh Little and Paul Stirling out due to T20 commitments, while Craig Young is injured), but if they can't have a full fledged team for the tests, what is the point in organizing such tours? And the torture is not yet over. Second test is set to begin by 24th April.

Yes there is no competition at all between Srilanka and Ireland, just a one sided contest. After this performance of Ireland I don't think they will be given more test against full test status sides. Ireland should have scored ateast 250 in both innings to have atleast a respectable defeat. Total score of Ireland in both innings is just 311. Lorcan Tucker is the highest scorer from Irish side who scored 45 runs in first innings.

Matches like these surely having bad impact on this format and host country as well which is not good sign but here no one can do anything because ICC is having his own agenda and things like these surely going to create problems even many are still believed WTC system is going to have positive impact, but we need few changes in test format which is important otherwise things could be brought more negative things Sri Lanka washed out Ireland in just 2 and half days with the biggest win for them and good practice as well.

Absence of players is surely also having his impact but as we are heading in this format now time for bringing changes or saying goodbye to quality test format both are on cards.
