Calvin Abueva confirms receiving Japan offer, but says not biting - yet

Commissioner Marcial has to lift the suspension soon if he still want Abueva to play in the PBA, this guy already has an offer and for sure with a bigger salary, he has not entertain the offer yet as he might just want to play in the PBA.

“May alok ako, tinext ako nung kaibigan kong agent. Hinahanap nga raw ako sa kanya ng isang Japanese team,” said Abueva, who declined to identify the agent or the team that he said wants to approach him.

If they will listen to the fans, Commissioner Marcial will give us the good news, and it's nice to hear from Calvin that he would still prefer to play in the PBA but we know if he will get tired of waiting, he might bite the offer and his contract with the Phoenix will also expire soon.

This is complicated on the side of Abueva but i agree with his decision on not biting the offer. His contract with Phoenix will expire few months from now so he must not leave the country so that anytime they can talk with the management of the Fuel Masters and he must pursue for a long term one, maybe his as he is getting older. Being an import in Japan, he will get only short term contract with no guarantee of an extension. He should be loyal to Phoenix so that the team will give him good term, on the contract of course  Smiley.

Absolutely but if he doesn't have a choice for sure he will get the offer considering how big the amount he can get if he will play on japan and also it's a big exposure for him to play overseas for sure after that if he will get a good result there the PBA chiefs will allow him to play. He should really be loyal to phoenix but the question is do really need to do it? Its a business so best he should go on what's best for him.

You have a point, the level of competition in Japan could be different and they can just not renew the contract of a player if they don't like it anymore, so for long term it might be a disadvantage for him.

There are also rumors that they are targeting Terrence Romeo, so it looks like Filipino talents have become a world class talent already as other countries are interested to hire them.

All of what I said is coming from this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0U9IsLi2wEc ( it also tackles Thirdy Ravena's contract)

That's good for our players, they can showcase their talent outside the Philippines especially for young players.
Good example is Thirdy Ravena.

https://www.manilatimes.net/2020/06/26/sports/triple-pay-awaits-ravena-in-japan/735309/

here's what would interest you guys coming from the above article.

Quote
According to a 2019 article in Japan Times, the average base salary of Japanese players is $147,000.00 or P7,354,851 per year as of November.

In the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), the salary of a rookie is P170,000 per month or P2.4 million per year, P4.95 million lower than a Japanese baller’s salary.

So since Ravena is an import, he will not get the average, so probably he will earn more or less 1 million pesos per month. Isn't it nice.
This would also be a call for the PBA to improve their salary scale for the players as other countries are already competing with them.

Congratulations to Ranidel de Ocampo de ocampo, he is now back with the TNT after the retirement, but with a different role.

TnT reunites with Ranidel de Ocampo, tapped as part of coaching staff

His journey with the PBA will continue as part of the coaching staff. It's really good to see PBA players who can still have the work after they retire, just like Jimmy Alapag, now we have RDO working, also hoping that he will be a successful coach in the PBA just like Jimmy " The Mighty Mouse".

He doesn't need exposure anymore as he was already exposed  Smiley. He is visible to the Japan basketball community, that means they are watching PBA and all it's players in the league.

I think he need to be loyal to Phoenix as there might be no team interested on him anymore as he is very unpredictable lol. Phoenix was a better team with Abueva on board and they just need to exert more effort to tame the Beast.

very much exposed, we've seen what he can do and he is really a beast, that's why he is indefinitely suspended.
Maybe one of the reasons why he is still thinking as it's hard for him to be a beast in Japan, not his country so he might some problem.

he really wants to play, problem is he is still suspended and that's already over a year, so if his contract will be over and the suspension will not be lifted up, I think he will struggle financially and he might make a decision that is out of his plan, like taking offers from other league.

Good for him, his loyalty to the TNT or the teams under MVP gives him that spot.
We never know if a player has a coaching ability until they are already working on a job, so I wish him success as well.
ROD was one of the exciting players in his time, especially during his prime so this is a great reward for him.

Maybe this position opens up as they waive coach TAB, am I right?

There's a legal matters involve here, Abueva was still currently in contract with the Phoenix FuelMasters, so if Phoenix will keep him, there's nothing he can do but to wait until the contract expires, or maybe it's possible for him to sign outside if the Phoenix management itself will let him go, however, the way I see it, Phoenix  are still interested with Abueva as their team has improved during the times Abueva was playing with them.

Let's look at what happened to the Alaska Aces when they traded Abueva, they are not the same team as before, so it tells that Abueva is really a big asset that a teams needs, of course except his attitude, that can be changed I believe.

His journey with the PBA will continue as part of the coaching staff. It's really good to see PBA players who can still have the work after they retire, just like Jimmy Alapag, now we have RDO working, also hoping that he will be a successful coach in the PBA just like Jimmy " The Mighty Mouse".
He played on TNT when he is at his prime and the management knows what he can bring up to the young players of TNT. Well deserved IMO and I think its expected.

I just hope that more and more old players will be hired as part of the management of different teams especially those who played really well in their prime years so that they can teach their experiences to these young and talented new players.

Maybe this position opens up as they waive coach TAB, am I right?

As per the article, they made it clear that the exit of Baldwin has nothing to do with De Ocampo's arrival.

They are in talks with RDO even before the Baldwin's issue so I think he will be supposed to work with Baldwin as part of the staff.

But unfortunately, that won't happen anymore. Anyhow, RDO is a long-time Ka-Tropa and surely will help the team in any aspects. A stepping stone to his future coaching career if push through.

Yes he played in TNT but has retired as Merelco Bolts, anyway, the same owner but their best team was really the TNT.
It's another challenge for him, he was successful being a basketball player, now time to prove the world that he can also do the same in coaching.

I just hope that more and more old players will be hired as part of the management of different teams especially those who played really well in their prime years so that they can teach their experiences to these young and talented new players.

If they are interested and they have the knowledge or skills, then maybe they can work, but the coaching job are just limited, so there's still competition even in that type of job. How about the job of being a PBA announcer or commentator?

RDO's experienced playing with the system will bring them a good glimpse from how they've wanted to escalate the play. With him besides the coaching side he can easily guide players to do the right thing. Players who turned themselves to this career got a much better anticipation as they've got a on hand experienced with what the coaches wanted to see both from practices and actual game time.

Nice to see him with active participation after his retirement, this is indeed an opportunities for him if he wanted to pursue and become one of the head coach from this league.

Once you are part of the coaching staff, you don't wish to be just in that position until you retire, you also aim for improvement so probably he is also aiming to be a head coach, but for now it's still too early to think of that, he needs to prove first that he is an asset in the coaching staff and everything will just follow.

TNT soon would promote someone to coach the team as there's no assurance that Dickel would work with the TNT for a long period of time.
I know he wasn't the coach now but he is doing the job.

according to what you shared;

ONLY three PBA coaches have won Coach of the Year awards successively. One was Perry Ronquillo in his successful journey with the Formula Shell Turbo Chargers at the approach of the millennium.

This guy is good but unfortunately I wasn't so interested with PBA that time, I was just a teenager so I'm more into watching movies and listening music, especially the OPM which was popular that time, I am a batang 90's , but I'm not a fan of PBA that time.

The Classic Benjie, he was really good during his prime, I heard his name but I was not able to follow his games.
Who do you think is the better, the Father Benjie or the son KOBE Paras? Maybe it's hard to compare them since Kobe was not in the PBA yet.  Grin

This one is easy for me to tell who's better though i did not see Benjie Paras played live in the PBA Smiley. Per record, Benjie Paras is the only PBA players which hold the MPV and at the same time Rookie Of the Year award on the same year so he must be good. While Kobe Paras though for sure he will be in the PBA because of his name, won't be in the top 3 in the draft.

That's very impressive, honestly, I don't know that, man, you really know a lot about the PBA, how old are you if you don't mind?

On the other hand, the Kobe Paras achievement was only hype I guess, because he played in the US and people are hopeful of his success, failed and come back in the Philippines just like Aguilar, so let's see how his journey would be if he will get drafted in the PBA.

Lol but thanks for the compliment bro. Sorry but i have to "Keep You Guessing" about my age hehehe. Just a hint though, made a typo above as i did not saw Paras playing basketball live. I watched a lot of PBA games and commentators would usually mention that specially the "Dean" Quinito Henson. Also i played competitive basketball back then, as a matter of fact i'm a varsity in high school, not on team "A" though but that's the reason i'm really into basketball  Cool. 6'1" is my height if you would ask lol.

Got a feeling that his career in the PBA won't last long but i'm hoping that i'm wrong.
