1061  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: You chose to "Be Your Own Bank" don't get complacent and scammed, I did. on: November 20, 2019, 04:15:15 AM
I know most people here are tech guys,
One very important thing to consider when dealing with bitcoin as an investment (which is what you are doing, as you are even lending it) is to really understand its potential performance in your portfolio and the risks involved.
An asset like bitcoin which may increase its 10-20% per day has enough volatility by itself. You donīt really need to lend it for 5% interest rate a year (which is almost negligible compared to nearly 300% gains, only this year). Lending also increases your risk exponentially.
If you want fixed interest rates, you should buy bonds. Exchange your bitcoin to your local fiat and get your 1-5% per year (depending to your country). Bonds are highly regulated and nobody is going to run away with your money (possible but highly unlikely).
Bitcoin lacks regulations, so anyone can runaway with your money and you can't do anything. Authorities probably can't help you, as your coins are probably in a company in another continent.
Lending is simple not worth the risk.
You do make good points here. Tech guy definitely doesn't describe me all to well. I would say 95% of what I've learned or sone with computers has been due to getting involved in BTC, and choosing to mine. I still have tons to learn, and am trying to find time to dedicate to getting better. That or I might start getting the "OK Boomer" from my daughter in a few years  Wink
I actually got into lending as a way to try and make BTC work for me in it's form without selling it and then converting. So far it's been a mixed bag, and probably not something I will continue to do in the future. -This Scam not part of that consideration. I also like to spend BTC when I can for purchases that would otherwise be done through PP or something like that. With a percentage saved always, as I do want to benefit from price increases in the future. I'm not yet convinced that it's sole purpose moving forward should be a store of value, I would hope that it could be a means to large scale purchases not needing to be completed within seconds or minutes, with other coins or systems designed for quick everyday purchases - A crypto commerce ecosystem.
You aren't wrong about the risks though, as 1 bad deal on lending can result in wiping out profits from 100's of deals depending on the interest rates you work with.
A very good post. Not always easy to say publicly "I fucked up"... Hopefully will serve as a warning to others and who knows... it might just save one person from being a victim!
Also, just FYI, the "Developer Mode" setting is in a slightly different location on Android and iOS versions of Discord... Android it is in "User Settings -> App Settings -> Behaviour" and on iOS it is "User Settings -> Appearance -> Advanced".
Refer here: https://support.discordapp.com/hc/en-us/articles/206346498-Where-can-I-find-my-User-Server-Message-ID-
That article also explains how to find "Server" and "Message" IDs. I could see the "Server ID" being useful to avoid being invited onto "fake" servers.
I added a link to your post in the OP. A similar article was how I figured out where to look for User ID's, obviously to late. I should have though to link it in, glad you thought of it. It's a must if you want to report someone on Discord for any reason so it's funny they tuck this info away in the first place.
Nice thread every bit of information out there helps.
I only sending money on Telegram et al. unless I'm 100% sure the person is trustworthy and 100% not an impersonator or hacked account.
It's funny because I had been contacted through telegram once and put the person to task to prove their identity, and it was who they said they were. In that case they were not a person I had met IRL, so that's where my guard dropped. Obviously this person wasn't someone I had met IRL, but did just enough to fool me, and had I done a few extra simple steps on my part this would have been avoided. Live and learn, help others learn at the same time. Wink

The major forks for the BTC previously held by OgNasty will be liquidated sometime before the end of the year. When this is done, you'll see a bunch of BTC sent to 17RTT[...]. The forkcoins for the other BTC will not be liquidated soon.
Sounds like a solid plan. Thanks for the response. Maybe you can PM Ver to take it off your hands. Help him get rid of some of that failed Bitcoin core his customers still give him  Tongue
1063  Other / Meta / Re: The BCH value in forum wallets on: November 18, 2019, 09:33:42 AM
I love it. To be fair though, I'm sure theymos received one of those fancy little letters saying "we think you have something to do with crypto" or whatever the wording was, his was probably the nice one that said we think you have filed properly. I'd wager theymos has the I's crossed the the T's dotted, when it comes to paying what is required in regards to taxes for the forum. He does comply with the laws of the jurisdiction as required.
1064  Other / Meta / The BCH value in forum wallets on: November 18, 2019, 09:22:04 AM
I found myself looking over the forum wallet accounts this evening and thought it was worth an ask. What is the forums plan for the BCH that is available to them?
The forums main wallet - 19XTo6BHpPHSkW5cm183VrgEYpGjVJmQEt currently has 750 BCH available, which could be 23.4 BTC.

I never had to go through the experience of recovering BCH when the fork happened, but am sure that it is something that could be easily handled. So I'm not sure if I'm missing something or the plan has just been to hold BCH as well. This is also the minimum that I assume is available to the forum as there were likely some other hot wallet accounts that had smaller amounts available.

Granted I don't look into BCH often, and just happened to use blockchain.com, so I clicked in the BCH option for kicks. So maybe I'm missing something that is obvious to others.
1065  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: Is sharing number conformations required is a crime? on: November 18, 2019, 08:46:09 AM
Never used them but any exchange or service I have used always states the minimum number of confirmations needed before I can access the funds on their site. So I would just keep on them on every platform you can until this is resolved. I would take a quick read through their TOS as well and see if there is anything in there, then you can at least point it out to them as you push for the release.

For this to turn into a crime they need to steal the funds outright. Until then it's just a customer service issue. That sort of issue would lead me to not use them again moving forward, and pull any coins you might have there out.
1066  Economy / Reputation / Re: Vod is a liar. on: November 18, 2019, 08:37:55 AM
Believe it or not, OG was paid 6btc a year to provide that service that was terminated.
~snip~
I was sorry when I posted OG's known address on this forum, but no one cares.
Yeah I knew the agreement was .5 BTC/month not sure the payment frequency. It made sense at current pricing to reduce that. The only surprise I had was how long it remained in effect without reconsideration. That's changed, the cost is still about 66% of what it was at 4BTC/year just with responsibilities spread out across more members.

Known to some isn't known to all so I'm glad to hear that you felt remorse, I may have even read it at the time, can't recall. The problem is with how things have continued to carry on it's long been buried until you have stated it once again. I can't remember if I read the un-edited post correctly or not, but any claims about someone's character or behavior or perceived part in an organisation you disagree with would fit nicely into the type of thread I mentioned above.

The way I see it, either Vod snitched to the IRS on our forums treasurer, who was holding a very large amount of the forums value, Or, Vod lied about snitching to the IRS on our forums treasurer..
That forum treasurer who is still our forum treasurer.. That OGNasty guy..
Who are we to tell someone how to act? I disagree with what was stated and the actions taken based on speculation but apart from that people are free to do as they please... in some places. Hell I have to go crawling to a government agency this week seeking their assistance, due to my own stupidity. The claims of reporting on Og weren't in response to any forum funds, and I may be messing up my timelines here but I don't believe it put the forum funds at risk.
1067  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Protect your personal computer/smartphone - Save yours coins from hacking! on: November 18, 2019, 05:58:09 AM
Steamtyme, maybe its time to try something new, most security programs offer 30 or more days trial, so there are no costs and risks.
Any reason in particular or just because of the frustrations that I had mentioned? Those have largely passed, and my Sub is up in 7 months I believe? I just want to make sure I'm not missing something glaringly obvious as to why I should switch maybe sooner. I will likely try out a few  trials next time around, just to get a decent idea of what is out there.
1068  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: You chose to "Be Your Own Bank" don't get complacent and scammed, I did. on: November 18, 2019, 05:47:47 AM
When I got back to the fake site, I was like "wtf am I doing?". I ended up reporting it and informing some people I know not to fall for such trick.
Yeah I wish I had had that moment, and early on definitely ran into a few situations like that. Usually though it was with a platform that I knew the ins and outs better, or with a non crypto payment that I understood fully what to expect.
You can click on the name with the right mouse button and a drop down menu shows up and there you have the option profile , click on it and there you have "Same server"
Click on it and it shows you the same server you use as the User you got the pm and you can see from where he is coming and server he use.
Most times i write in this server channel and report this Users to the Channel Mod or Admin so they get banned and other users know about the situation.
Yeah this was some of the small checks I did do, and just a complete ball drop on my part not going further or actually PMing or posting in the channel. Live and learn and forget those Satoshis, I guess.
Another thing I try to put under check is my emotions, particularly greed. If not probably controlled, greed will make you get scammed regardless of any principles or due diligence you do.
Yeah I've gotten good at not necessarily chasing the get rich quick schemes they are generally fairly flimsy and transparent. Where I must and will improve on is the helping hand shit I do, seemingly far to often. That is another easy way to prey on folks especially when impersonating someone.
You surely messed up, no doubt about that. But one more thing is for sure though, Discord should have more countermeasures to prevent things like this from happening. In my opinion, it's just not THAT easy to tell accounts apart especially if you're new to the platform.
~snip~
When even decently internet savvy people are getting scammed on your platform, you definitely know that you should do more things to prevent these things from happening. Hopefully Discord does something about this.
I agree, I was less than impressed with their canned responses to the situation. It was almost like they didn't read the first email, at least the second response gave me the info I was looking for. A direct inquiry line for the authorities to follow up on. I have and will continue to make suggestions to them about their platform, like having the User ID present and permanently visible under users profiles. That simple step would have stopped this in it's tracks, and my carelessness wouldn't have been my undoing this time around.

It's funny how little Discord has adjusted to what it has become. It's no longer just a gamer chat platform but is used by almost all crypto project launches to maintain a community server. Most platforms tend to see the problems that develop and attempt to mitigate risks through simple changes, them not so much. Either way the steps I've taken moving forward will ensure this doesn't happen for me again, and hopefully anyone who reads through this. Even if the discussion dies down here, I will continue to bump this topic every now and then just to keep people on their toes. Hell maybe  even make avoiding scams one of my [Info] videos.

Really it's still a loss, in the end it's a decent excuse to unload a bag or 2 of coins I had high hopes for that seem to be stagnant. Maybe the scammer helped me out, you know, less wallets to update and projects to follow.  Undecided
1069  Other / Meta / Re: Rule #34 perhaps - Multiple bump topics on a single board should be consolidated on: November 18, 2019, 02:53:48 AM
That comment[/url] was the first comment in my "consolidated topic", but it's GrumpyKitty we're talking about Tongue
I couldn't remember if something was said first or not, I guess that was more the GrumpyKitty seal of approval. Wink
Quote
Talking for myself, I don't really use daily bumps on my data topics anymore (and ironically I never used daily bumps on my "useful data"-topic), but I do like to keep updating several data-topics (and I know for a fact some users appreciate them or even look forward to them
Myself included, some of them, others are just beyond the level of what I want to know. Nightshifts Friday are the worst especially as it takes longer each week to get the Trust List viewer uploaded. I think quite a few of your get bumps form others waiting on them anyways, and yes once a week taking up a few spots isn't really to bad. I only pointed to you in particular as you had already made a great example of how a landing page could be utilized. I wanted to avoid calling out anyone in particular that had currently triggered this thought for me.
Quote
I could think of a rule to limit the number of bumps a user is allowed per day per board, but that's going to be terrible to keep track of and it's easy to accidentally violate such a rule.
I agree with you, this would be more trouble than it's worth. If it made it's way into a rule, if reported Mods, could just PM a user and notify them of the need to create a landing page topic.
1070  Economy / Reputation / Re: Vod is a liar. on: November 18, 2019, 02:31:05 AM
OK then - he kept his position and just got a substantial pay cut.
Thanks for joining in on the conversation.  What do you think of OG casually calling people thieves?
I would say it was more like a disproportionate pay raise that took place over years of growth for BTC. The current system is likely far more inline with what the original amounts were when OG was given that role in the first place. Either way, not going to go back and look through it as it has little baring on your deliberately misleading statement, as there was no termination of service involved.

In regards to the Ibminer insinuation, that's for them to sort out. There is no feedback I can see regarding any lost miners or reference to one so it would lead me to believe that a simple, "okay I fucked up and was thinking of someone else". Then here's the kicker something that seems so difficult for some people here to say, "sorry". I know earth shattering shit, don't know how I come up with it.

Honestly any thread you are both posting in seems to be more inline with our cliickbait society, and half truths/opinions presented as facts. It's more or less disgusting on a forum built around information and cooperation. I very rarely feel like engaging with you anymore, which is sad as I used to enjoy it or reading what you had to say. It just seems something needs to be said when you are going to lob softballs in a thread dedicated to calling you a liar.

My advice to both of you, take it or leave it - the latter more likely. Draft up a single topic with facts. No more no less, then present it on the reputation board. You have a lot of claims out there, some of which could be easily proven, some of which you don't have the authority to even attempt to gain access to, so they can't be backed up. They are simply talking points. Post un-edited, complete PM's or emails, or quotes to back up any claims you can prove.  Don't edit the OP, reserve the second post for linking to any future posts made in that thread to handle any other factual information presented. Lay out your entire case and let people make a truly informed decision on both of you.

1071  Economy / Reputation / Re: Vod is a liar. on: November 17, 2019, 11:38:00 PM
When was OG fired as a treasurer? I am assuming you are speaking about the forum.

Taking steps to secure funds in a multisig capacity and adding additional users to the list of treasurers entrusted with this role, doesn't fit any definition of fired I have ever heard.
1072  Economy / Reputation / Re: scam scare on: November 17, 2019, 06:56:08 AM
Good job listening to your spidey senses.
Not sure what it is about this week, but you may have almost joined a group of people who know better getting scammed. I am going to agree with TP on this that you should point TOM to this thread to discuss/offer up an explanation. Personally when something shady happens people need to speak up, to prevent potential losses down the line. Seeing as you are a Lender in your own right, it should have ended at them coming directly to you with no middleman involved, once you provided that information. Hell if the Loan was successful you could have tossed TOM some commission or something; neither here nor there. Just a possible scenario why there was no need for there to be a middleman in this deal.

I wouldn't worry about being wrong. Someone brought you a shady deal, refused to sign messages to verify their account inline with forum practices. There is no harm in having them come here and offer up their side of the story. If it's above board it's nothing more than a deal you weren't comfortable with and everyone moves on.
1073  Other / Meta / Re: Rule #34 perhaps - Multiple bump topics on a single board should be consolidated on: November 17, 2019, 06:21:10 AM
What about the specific discussion around the topics, they would all just land up jumbled upon in the main consolidated thread.
No not really. The consolidation thread only serves the purpose of providing a landing page for the topics themselves. This could be a locked topic that the OP has and bumps daily or when they have the time, or it could be an open topic that has it's own discussion about what people want to see created maybe. This thread links to all others. The individual topics themselves would be where any actual discussion should it happen takes place, that is on topic for that thread.
1074  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [4+ EH] Slush Pool (slushpool.com); Overt AsicBoost; World First Mining Pool on: November 17, 2019, 05:17:49 AM
They might not want to generate empty blocks, they might not even be trying to. They just are.
-Dave
This could be the case but it's still a poor excuse not to improve. Their entire service is based on mining blocks and the transaction/rewards to be as profitable as possible for their miners. Transactions are the biggest reason for a miner to choose a PPLNS pool, so not doing everything possible to avoid empty blocks is just letting down your clients. On the flip side of that Miners exist to process these transactions, so if there is even 1 in the mempool it should damn well be in the block. I haven't been on slush for quite some time, but I think the problem has been they are big enough they don't care. There have been a lot of complaints about things like the merged mining rewards, and nothing has come of it. Unfortunately a lot of people just get complacent and don't reevaluate often enough, and if they are still make mad bank on the fees for the blocks mined without facing any real consequence where's there incentive to improve.
1075  Other / Meta / Re: Copy Paste detected on: November 17, 2019, 05:03:04 AM
On that note you can also just use the report to moderator button. Report the post and then link to where you believe the content was taken from in this case the post. This has worked for me in the past, just clearly explain you are reporting plagiarism in the text box.
1076  Other / Meta / Rule #34 perhaps - Multiple bump topics on a single board should be consolidated on: November 17, 2019, 04:40:33 AM
It would be something similar to this rule already in place.
30. Similar marketplace items must be listed together.[2][e]
Except that it is for all boards and is for topics like: [tips],[Ref], [Guide], [Help] or anything that falls into those categories with out the same heading. Since merit a lot of users have gone the route of creating helpful informative guides. the problem can be that they have multiple topics that don't necessarily generate a lot of discussion. The bump is totally within the current rules, but can overwhelm a board if you have say 3 users with a couple topics each.
I know I have a few out there floating around. Some made it into Pinned topics which was awesome, some I just reference when I see a post that could benefit from reading through it. What I am proposing is that users who have multiple informative style topics they want to keep relevant/visible should group these within a single reference thread and bump that topic daily. An example would be the B&H board where you then leave it open to mostly newbie questions or discussion threads, but still have a place for these informative topics.

I am only really noticing this more now, but do recall a comment from Lauda in regards to LoyceV some time ago. I can't recall if a comment was made prior to this but they do express the nuisance they felt it caused before consolidation. This would essentially be the format users should use when they have multiple topics on a board, it's just easier to suggest it to someone if it makes it's way into a rule/guideline in the same fashion as multi-posts or deleting old bumps.

[overview] LoyceV's useful data on Bitcointalk

I'm glad you were able to take something away from this. Glad you haven't fallen victim and hope this helps keep that streak alive.
You didn't say how this person (or the person you thought they were) knew about you having coins,
They would have known through the server. Not that I had any coins per say but that any member could have potentially had some. It's crypto related. On that note I do also discuss BTC and crypto with people irl. I will also continue to do so, I won't let fear prevent me from spreading information to potential new users. I just won't go letting my guard down again.
I think at this day it's better to just assume that everyone is going to scam you, and then you try to prove to yourself that they don't in fact hold such intention.
It is a good point, and not something I will be forgetting again. They really just got lucky through a combination of circumstances, but that's all it takes.
You weren't stupid. You just didn't have your defences up to the standard on this occasion and they probably got lucky with their timing as well.
For me that is what was stupid. It's not being hard on myself I just like to state it as a fact for this situation. I appreciate the kindness though and am glad you find the tale of warning useful.
1078  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Scam Alert, new type of HYIP! Cryptslots.com STAY AWAY AT ALL COST!!! on: November 17, 2019, 02:14:33 AM
The problem is that no matter how many times we write our bad experiences, scammers will come with something else.
Why? Because there is nothing to bring them down. They can get away every time they do their scheme.
Maybe a tracker in a transaction or a bug-"back money"... Tongue
Well one can only hope that it at least helps a few people avoid making the same mistakes. I love that you can at least joke about it as well. Could you imagine the amount of scams the "back-money" bug would create. We could call it something like PayPal, that's kind of catchy  Wink
1079  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Scam Alert, new type of HYIP! Cryptslots.com STAY AWAY AT ALL COST!!! on: November 16, 2019, 01:20:25 PM
Fuck, sorry to hear. I just documented my own tale of being scammed... unfortunately it is also fresh. Glad to see you did the right thing in bringing it to light so others don't fall into the same trap.
This is exactly what i try to do, to leave it behind and move on. I'm dissapointed though with myself because i'm not a newbie and i act like one.
Best thing to do, including the disappointment. It helps in not making the same mistake again.
1080  Other / Beginners & Help / You chose to "Be Your Own Bank" don't get complacent and scammed, I did. on: November 16, 2019, 12:55:14 PM
So the short of it is. I got complacent, and was just outright stupid. I have been scammed before, when I was brand new. Since then I've avoided and called out countless scam attempts. The difference was they came at me in an expected fashion through platforms I was more than familiar with. This was a little different in that it used some social engineering, and was on a platform I use but not to often. I'm also sure I've either met this person, or they know the person they impersonated rather well. I am choosing to write this for the following reasons, of what I think everyone should do when they get scammed/robbed etc. I knkow this is not a new method, but hopefully this snaps it back to the forefornt of peoples minds if you were starting to slip as I did. Being distracted and busy are no excuse, to drop the ball.

First, feel it. Let it piss you off or do whatever you need to get through it. I tend to take things in stride and normally would have just grabbed a cold one, or burned a little something. Due to a lifestyle change I'm rolling with for a bit, I couldn't do either, but I prefer not to stew on shit. What's done is done. You now need to do the responsible shit.

Swallow your pride. You got ripped off, but that doesn't mean the next person has to. It might make you feel better to just keep it a secret between you and the degenerate shitbag that now has your funds but you're only helping them. To be honest you've already done more than enough for them, so no more free favors. That's what this is, I'll give a small tip on how to find the unique identifier that doesn't change with account names or anything else on discord. It's an account ID number which for some reason isn't shown by default.

Finally, though it seems futile file a police report or whatever option your country has for a cyber crimes unit. Will this recover your funds, don't count on it. You will likely just feel a little more stupid, hopefully for the last time. What it can do though is lead to bringing down these scam operations... eventually. In my case they used Discord, so there is a chance they slipped up and with plethora of information Discord tracks on it's users - fingers crossed - they will be tracked and charged with Fraud. Not a big win, but might help someone else down the road.

Maybe this is the finally, but say good bye to your coins. Ignore what they could have been or what they are. It's a loss, but also a valuable lesson. So I'd prefer my loss to be a lesson to many others.

How it went down. Most scams come at you trying to promise big gains, in one way or another. These are easy to spot. This person came at me through Discord PM, impersonating someone from a small server I'm a part of. My first mistake was allowing random PM's, I have since disabled those. If someone really wants to talk they can post in the server. Second mistake was not checking the photo well enough, I usually check it on mobile, and being complacent and just plain stupid I didn't notice the sizing difference, or I just chaulked it up to "mobile" version. Then I didn't actually look through the users of the server to notice this duplicate, I got close but dropped the ball at a half assed attempt to vet the account. Then came the ask, this was the one I was most likely to fall for, no big gains, a small offer of "interest" in helping out in a tight spot, with what they needed. Small stupid story about coins being held up that they needed for a customer and couldn't access from the exchange while not being near their home wallet.
Yeah I know, dumb dumb right here.
It became clear over the next couple days that there were countless excuses, and that I F'd up. I had that sinking feeling shortly after sending the coins, like did I just do that. At that point it's to late. Again we choose to be our own bank and need to remain vigilant.

So for now I am taking the steps of shame and reporting the issue; discord is all but useless in providing canned answers but I have a ticket open and documentation regarding the incident. They now have a duty to work with the authorities and provide what little factual information they have gathered. Now if you use Discord here is how you find an account ID - this number cannot be changed and is used for filing complaints. It is the only identifier that cannot change regarding an account.

Go to User Settings -> Appearance -> then toggle on developer mode. This allows you to right-click their profile and copy their User ID which can be used to verify them.
Edit: See HCP's post here for additional information on finding "developer" mode settings and additional discord Id's for servers and messages.

So again in summary - Don't be stupid like Steamtyme was. You can perform due diligence a hundred times and forget it once, the result is still lost funds.
