1081  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Protect your personal computer/smartphone - Save yours coins from hacking! on: November 16, 2019, 10:07:24 AM
My problem so far luckily hasn't been my hardware. I've been fairly cautious when it came to where I clicked and what sort of traffic I put my home network through. This was of course learned through the early years of streaming, then realizing the shit you could pick up.

I did start to invest in protection a few years ago, when I realized how much access my PC could provide someone with nefarious intentions. There was a discount version of Mcafee available at the time that allowed install on all my devices. I've stuck with it through the years, at first because I didn't end auto-renewal. I have found it to be to aggressive at times, even ignoring items that I whitelist, which was infuriating. I still don't use all it's features, but run a scan when I log onto any home PC, that I'm using for either a wallet, or other personal info. This is on top of leaving it online all the time on all personal PC's in the house. I let it scan anything I'm going to download. So far it's served me well.
I have yet to place it on my phone, but see that it is an option. I just never got around to it, and don't use my mobile wallet anymore for more than say 50$ I would be spending pretty much immediately.
I do have a mining rig that doesn't get to talk to the rest of the network. Mcafee doesn't get to run except when I tell it to, as it constantly deletes a GPU miner file, no matter how many times I tell it to leave it alone.
1082  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Spammed by 1Sats TX on: November 16, 2019, 08:25:02 AM
This is a non issue. It's exactly what people should be doing with their small inputs at a time when fees are low. Like the article said that the average fee wasn't affected, the only thing different here is that there shouldn't have been any empty blocks mined - They all should have had transactions available for miner fees. Some pools still mine empty blocks though so this period should have been an eye opener for those miners.

In the end if you needed to get a transaction through, you really just had to set it at a 2 sat/byte fee, then your transaction took priority over these. That is unless a pool was choosing these transactions in the blocks they mined. This could happen if they were consolidating or something, which is perfectly fine. The problem before was people congesting the system at their own expense with high fee, low value transactions. This does congest the network and cause people to pay more to get their transaction confirmed asap.
1083  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: The winter mining setup on: November 16, 2019, 07:38:53 AM
If I remember right Kano had a sweetspot setting for running a 741 in their living room. A lot of the older gear was easy to tweak to get it right to where you wanted it. Most people though only wanted the max hash. Now that they are either unprofitable or close to it, they make great little heaters if they were sitting around. I would love to run some of this gear in certain spots around the house, but it's not practical for me to do anything other than turn my basement into my furnace air exchange.

On that note, today we had a random power outage. I don't know the specifics of Transformers on a pole but what I could tell was a switch up there was open. We have new neighbors and are the end of the line so I'll blame them. It was nice having that extra heat in the basement as I just opened the door to let it flow up naturally and keep the kiddos warm while they played DS. Only took the utility company a few hours to pop out and repair, but in an old drafty house with one room gutted waiting for insulation I was glad to have an unseasonably warm day. Super happy I didn't have any hardware issues firing back up either.
1084  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Cryptotalk forum payment issue and many more on: November 16, 2019, 05:10:04 AM
Not going to lie, this is an issue with only posting somewhere to get paid for it. If that forum isn't providing engaging discussions or useful knowledgeable posts then what's the point really. You are at someone else's mercy there and they have "god mode" enabled. They can do anything they want, change the rules, or discontinue at any point. They can also choose to pay just enough people to keep things seemingly operating as normal. They don't have to answer to anyone, or leave up any comment with dissent to hide the shenanigans.

I'm pretty sure the sole purpose of that forum is to attempt to drive traffic, and advertising dollars away from this forum. Mostly because they didn't want to follow the rules, even their current campaign barely does that. So all you can do is decide whether it is worth your time to post there, and that includes if they continue to move the yardstick along to suit their needs.

All you can do is if you truly believe they will operate above board is message the Admins requesting features like you stated are missing, and request clarification on why posts where moved. Phrase it like you just want to help improve the user experience or something. I'm not signing up, not even when they launched the big giveaways. I like to post my useful information here where it actually seems to help and be read/discussed. This was true when I didn't receive anything for posting here either.
1085  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Somewhat Clueless Old Fart With Some Equipment on: November 14, 2019, 04:45:59 AM
Not much that can be done, the T9 is the only gear that will mine BTC. You can check this guide out that is fairly universal for mining in general and getting started. First time/Small miner reference for getting started. It's pinned to the top of this board. For trying to make a profit, do you live in a cold climate? That's really the only way to avoid being in the red on this hardware, you can run them in the house to offset your heating cost. That or a garage or shop you heat.
I don't know what the profitability is on the L3+ (Litecoin) or the D3 (Dash), but there are people whi might still buy them on ebay, or the forum here. Marketplace -> Computer hardware this would be your best bet at getting some BTC or other coin for them if that's what interests you. The tough sell is that you don't know if they are operational without the power supplies. On that front though you can find supplies for them easy enough, as there are a lot of people offloading gear and PSU's mostly because newer gear is shipping out as an all in one product. Mostly for the sale or purchase it will also depend on what country you live in.
Hope that helps.
1086  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Bitmain sues ex-employee for allegedly IP theft on: November 14, 2019, 04:36:27 AM
I'm going to have to read up on this more, but I've seen a few discussions pop up on it. I don't think he was arrested, I believe he was brought in for questioning, in regards to the accusations. There are a few Ex- Employees that left Bitmain, and started direct competition, all of them had some sort of a strict non-compete clause in their contracts that were in effect for 1 year from the time they left. One of these employees is the founder of I want to say Poolin pool, which launched fully operational with lots of hashrate I believe exactly 1 year after the fact. For the gear side of it though, if the last thing this guy worked on for them was the S9, it's a tough sell to say it's the same thing when they stepped it up to an entirely different chip size, 10nm as opposed to the 16 nm I think.
There is a lot at work here and it will be interesting to see how it all plays out. Funny side note is that the MicroBT gear points to Poolin pool by default when you receive it. Old friends against a common enemy.
1087  Other / Meta / Re: Respond to thread without bumping, and report to followers on: November 14, 2019, 04:06:43 AM
For instance, I'm hesitant to respond to an old thread because I'm afraid that bringing it to the front for the entire forum could revive some low-quality discussion from people that had not participated in it originally.
Who's to say they won't bring in a fresh perspective or a quality opinion that could drive the discussion further. If you only want to address certain members from a topic then you might as well PM them your new thought/idea on the matter and discuss it there. You can also follow my previous suggestion in creating a new topic, and still PM users you think may be interested.
In the end I'm in the corner of - If it doesn't warrant discussing with anyone who reads it and forms an opinion, then it doesn't warrant being posted. Every topic and post has the potential to generate spam, low quality responses don't let that stop a deserving discussion from being started or re-ignited. Just report the garbage.
1088  Other / Meta / Re: Newbie Welcome video on: November 14, 2019, 03:32:49 AM
~snip~
You're very welcome, happy to help [especially when it comes to doing stuff for a good cause].
Thank you once again, I will take some time and sort through the resources you have provided. I'll be in touch when I decide to start on the next video. I'm going to play around with some of the workarounds you've given me and keep my eye out to see if I can cheaply get around my current hardware limitations. Good ol Black Friday/Cyber Monday - more of a 2 week event these days - could help with that.

Just to add on to the previous suggestions, have you considered making videos on tutorials regarding bitcoin or crypto itself? You could quite possibly become one of the better crypto based YouTubers given your progress. Are there any other issues you're facing with which the community can help you out?
Never really considered trying to become a crypto YouTuber, if the videos get picked up all the better - more chance they help some folks out. My next video is actually less forum related, because I found myself seeing gaps in my plan. I was going to dive right into securing your account and realised there are plenty of people who don't know how to sign messages or how to properly download a wallet that you can do so from. So while I'm no expert, and must admit have taken liberties with actually verifying signatures myself before downloading wallet software - I am working through those problems as if I were a newbie to try and create a well rounded series on that. Then I can proceed with signing a message and forum account recovery.
In a different life I would probably take a weeks vacation and just lock myself in the house with some tunes and jam through these learning as I go and redoing them to improve multiple times. For now it will just be a slow steady grind in my freetime - generally after 10PM and whatever learning reading I can do on the job.

All I ask of the community is if you see a deficiency and have some insight into how I can improve upon it point it out and offer any guidance you have. So far it's been great and I appreciate everyone who has taken the time to contribute their opinion in any way.
1089  Other / Beginners & Help / [INFO] Video resources for newbies getting started on: November 12, 2019, 12:40:12 AM
I am going to use this thread as a final landing page for all video resources I create regarding the forum. The idea here is to help newbies get started on the right foot starting out in the forum. There are also some things that may be of use to veteran forum members. There are plenty of pitfalls that members fall into and it is my hope that these videos will help you avoid them and become productive members of the forum.

Getting started with a new account - This video covers account creation, finding the rules and understanding stickied threads.

Post formatting - This video covers using the edit button, as well as trimming quotes.

Forum Feedback - An overview of the feedback side of the trust system

I am going to lock this topic as it is only intended as a resource. I will do my best to bump it daily to keep it visible. Here is the thread where I launch new videos for review, as well as take suggestions and critiques.
1090  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [AUCTION] Corrosive Creations copper and brass Jokers! 1 of 2 on: November 11, 2019, 07:52:33 PM
They're beautiful. I want one.
Seems to me you are answering your question right there. It's not like you have one sitting on your wall, and you are allowed to admire your own work placed on a new medium. Just my thoughts on it. Good luck everyone.

Also agreed, these are beautiful pieces.
1091  Other / Meta / Re: Respond to thread without bumping. on: November 11, 2019, 05:28:02 PM
I think that a useful feature in this forum could be the ability to intentionally respond to threads without sending them to the front page and without notifying respondents.
Such feature already exists in image boards like 2chan already implement this feature since long ago. It can add incentive to discuss older threads without the fear of 'necro bumping' and also when users want to respond to a thread critically without promoting it via bumps.
Now I think it'd be nice to allow for users to choose if they'll bump a thread.
I have to disagree with the underlying idea. I think it's up to each individual to decide if their post has enough substance to warrant bumping an old thread to the forefront by rehashing a discussion. Sometimes things have changed good or bad that definitely warrant a necrobump to bring this relevant information back to life.
The point Upgrade00 fits this as well. If the information is worthy of necrobumping then it should be worthy of restarting the discussion for anyone who notices it. You can also post a heading that you have necrobumped the thread and explain why, if the purpose is more of a PSA or FYI style post.

The other option is to create a new topic that centers around whatever you wanted to add to that discussion, and link to the old thread. The problem here is if the older users are still active they don't get  a notification in "show new replies to your posts".
1092  Other / Meta / Re: Newbie Welcome video on: November 11, 2019, 05:10:51 PM

- You should use better tags [try to add the "title itself" into your tags, not just a few words for each tag]

I can make you [for free] an overlay with your donation addresses [not in an annoying way for viewers].

I suggest using "OBS [free and open source]".
- Easy to learn and it's flexible enough [you can improve the quality of your sound a bit as well].

- If you can record and upload in 1440P,
Thanks for all the suggestions they are really helpful. I'll go back over the videos and drop any and all tags I can think of. Anyone can feel free to suggest some as well for me to add in.
I'll definitely look into that OBS option, I haven't had much time, but thanks to your suggestions I think I'll work on leveling up my skills a bit before I create a new video.
I'll see what I can do about uploading in 1440P. This is where a lack of knowledge hurts me, as I hadn't even considered adjusting anything to improve the video quality. I'm sure it's somethign I can do easily, if not I'll come back with questions, lol.
The sound issue may be an issue with the PC, and voice recording setup I'm using. I'll check out that software and play around with some of the videos I have currently over the next week or so to see what sort of improvements I can come up with.

I really appreciate the banner offer, and would definitely include it in the videos. Thanks again, I've found your suggestions and offer to be extremely valuable.

A small suggestion to OP, if this video was posted on Beginners section, then more newbies would have benefited. Can you post this video in Beginners section?
I will post a topic there today, for these 2 videos. They are a good start, and likely won't be redone or edited in anyway in the foreseeable future. I also haven't heard anything problematic that makes them less than valuable, so I'm comfortable unleashing them further. Glad you like them.

Edit: Beginners and Help topic created - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5200715.0
1093  Other / Meta / Re: Newbie welcome video - 2nd video -Post formatting posted for review on: November 08, 2019, 10:33:42 PM
Thank s for the input. Yeah I'm tough to pin down for a solid collaboration, but am always open to suggestions advice or ideas people want to see implemented. That's a big reason why it's important for me to drop them here first for critiques people have.

I will definitely cover the merit system, it would be hard not to. I was kicking around a few ideas on the best way to approach it. So keep an eye out for it. I will likely do it after this account recovery/proof of ownership vein I want to dive into this weekend. It's going to involve an aspect of actually obtaining a legit version of Electrum ~ just what I'm mostly comfortable with and have some knowledge on, still learning myself. I just want to make sure I don't put anything in there that could be used to burn a newbie in the space in the future - unsafe or inaccurate download information.

With that though community input will be able to tell me if I F'd it up well before it gains visibility.

I'll look into that software as it would be nice to have a few more options for improving the quality of the video, just have to make sure my ancient PC setup can handle it, and will likely stick with the inexpensive/free option. I paid for a year of my capture software which was fairly inexpensive so I'm going to try and keep costs down as much as possible. I appreciate the links though.
1094  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: NovaBlock, The Most Profitable Mining Pool on: November 08, 2019, 10:26:37 PM
Thanks for the answers. I'm glad the review is what you were looking for, and appreciate you clarifying some points. I'll keep an eye on the pool for sure, as it's nice to see the willingness to shift directions to better serve a customer base. Best of luck in continuing to grow and build.

I definitely understand the point about your fees, I know there is a large risk to pools running a PPS+ payout structure, so hopefully there is enough interest from your larger miners to run a PPLNS pool.
1095  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: How to wire your s17's and t17's diy on: November 08, 2019, 01:12:31 PM
Love the DIY Phil keep it up. Just for clarity sake it might be nice to toss in a picture of a completed unit. I was trying to sort out what's what following the links and, obviously not running these it took me a few minutes to figure it out. Could you not overcome the warning for higher power machines by stepping up to a higher gauge power cord and/or splitter as needed?
1096  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: LoyceV's Beginners guide to correct use of the Trust system on: November 08, 2019, 12:51:55 PM
I've been trying to think up a video to add to my list for "trust" and "feedback". I actually bumped it further back, after account recovery in my plan as I felt it deserved more time and thought than a lot of the subjects I'm trying to cover. My plan does entail so far linking to your topic for the in-depth reading on the system for people beyond my video. It works well, as I've felt we've had the same ideas, and thoughts on problems people run into confusing the 2 systems. It's probably 2 weeks away, but when I get a rough cut together, I'll PM you if that's fine to get your opinion.
1097  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Question about unspent transaction. on: November 08, 2019, 12:39:33 PM
I only just recently started trying to tinker and use my wallet properly. Long overdue, but have now used this "freeze" feature a couple times and wish I had delved deeper into the Electrum features sooner. I came across this while trying to sort out specifying a specific change address, found what seems to be the only option for that on an older forum post as well, using the Pay to many feature. Still haven't played with that to much but it's next on the list.
Is coin-control for unconfirmed UTXOs implemented for electrum, i.e. can you freeze them individually? If not, you could make an Issue on Github and ask them to fix/implement/etc.
Appreciate the bread crumbs.
1098  Other / Meta / Re: Newbie welcome video - 2nd video -Post formatting posted for review on: November 08, 2019, 10:22:15 AM
Thanks for checking it out, was hoping to get a bit more feedback on it so I've updated the thread title. This wasn't the most important topic, but seemed like a logical progression. I agree this is somethig that members of all ranks can struggle with.  I think I'm going to start down the account security/recovery vein next. I will keep your idea about individual boards in mind, hopefully enough people watch the first video and get the idea from reviewing the rules topic.
1099  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon A10 series announced on: November 07, 2019, 07:25:53 AM
Who did you buy them through? Wouldn't have been direct from Canaan, I believe they are still MOQ 60. Is this from an official distributor or a re-seller? The gear that is hitting 35/36 TH are still falling within a 5% range which is how all gear is sold to be +/- 5%.
Canaan wouldn't have a database of you as a customer if you bought from someone else so it makes sense they need you to identify a few things. For the most part their gear has been the most reliable for years, and their support is usually top notch. So while it may be frustrating to have gear not working as expected, if it's their responsibility they'll work with you to make it right. You just might have to ship things back to China for repair, which is in the terms and service for RMA, this is the same with all hardware companies; Bitmain may still service gear in the US not sure.
1100  Economy / Reputation / Re: Steamtyme - A Legendary Attack helicopter on: November 07, 2019, 06:40:37 AM
Well I must admit I've been looking forward to this day for some time. I honestly thought I would be one of the members who waits until the bitter end of the activity requirement.

Today I'm a Mudda F'in Legendary member. Sorry but I gotta mention the merit system, because hell it does feel good to know that I not only put in the time... well a lot of time in general, much more than just the required activity per period. I also upped my game in posting and the content I put out here on the forum. Thanks to that system I've seen that others also find what I bring to the table to have substance. I think I've gone through a ton of changes, and honestly grown as person to some extent, it's hard not to let this place change you.

Over the course of this journey I get in my own head from time to time, I've always had this issue. I go through periods where I engage less in the discussion or friendly banter, as I feel it can be perceived as spammy, or bumping up my post count. I didn't come here for the Sig campaigns, but I have taken advantage(not maliciously obviously) of the opportunity they present, I always saw it as I'm here posting anyways. In doing that I felt an extra obligation to think before I post respond or joke around. Then there are the weeks where I'm not as worried about the perception and just go for it posting whatever whitty- to me anyways- response I come up with, and in that I've had a blast interacting with a lot of members here.

Maybe I'm wrong but I feel like this is one of the last things I had to experience that is open to all members. It feels good.
