1181  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: What do the larger farms know that I can't figure out? on: October 13, 2019, 04:01:53 AM
The only thing you are missing is that the newer models are boasting efficiency. With cheap power that's not what you need at the moment. You should be piling in gear like s9's or m10's some of the Avalons fit nicely as well.. Really dense gear with mid level efficiency is you friend with low power.

Any large farm buying the nexgen of gear are doing do slowly. Phasing it in over months, as it makes sense to increase the hashrate while not breaking the bank for efficient gear that doesn't offer them the same bang for the buck against their electricity costs.
1182  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: bitcoin mining tax breaks on: October 13, 2019, 01:23:10 AM
It really depends in where you are and what their regulations are around registering and classifying a business. Most of what you describe are universal write-offs for any business. Generally any expense incurred to earn revenue, tax laws come into play here for how to classify each.
Startup costs being written off for purchasing gear generally come as a depreciation of the asset. So an S9 from January of 2018 at say 3000 would have a depreciation of 2800 or so up to this point, if not the full 3000. If you ever did sell it you just have to reapply and count it as income.
Revenue in the form if coins or hosting would be tracked at the price the day you receive the reward. You likely will be selling all coins at first to pay bills and earn back some of the investment capital, so selling the daily reward would be your easiest bet first. This way you use that as your daily revenue. Hosting is easier to track as the price wouldn't fluctuate- peg it to Fiat.
If you want to hold some coins personally. Buy them from the company at the same price it would have sold for. Then you can deal with capital gains/losses personally.
Now you can hold through the company as well but there is a lot more work in tracking held coins value and price.
Best bet is to find a good accountant who understands BTC as an asset with fluctuating value. It helps a new inexperienced business tremendously to have a professional help you navigate this aspect of the business if you have no background yourself
1183  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: i wanna buy btc giving my paypal on: October 12, 2019, 10:11:52 AM
Here are a couple lists of escrows on the forum with reputation. Forum Trusted Escrow, Additional Escrow List with Ranking

Not sure who you are dealing with but using escrow for these transactions works and it doesn't. The BTC should really be held for a long enough time to ensure there will be no charge backs. Not sure who on these lists deals with escrow involving paypal but you can reach out to whoever you and your trade partner are comfortable with.
1184  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk.org collectible coin ideas & vote on: October 12, 2019, 10:04:39 AM
For every earned 1000 Activity and 1000 Merit, forum users could get for instance 0.22112009 BTC, symbolizing the date of Satoshi Nakamoto's greeting message on the forum https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5.0
Do you mean that this would be an ongoing reward, as opposed to a 1 time thing on the 10th anniversary? It would be extremely limited as I believe only 41 people currently have the merit requirement for that, and I didn't check but then it's down around 30 or so that meet the activity requirement. It just wouldn't seem very inclusive all around.

Honestly I just hope a coin gets produced and distributed to a nice range of users. Funded and with somethign custom would be amazing but that requires an extreme amount of time and dedication, although an error being produced would be just top notch imo. I'd hate to see them become to valuable as it would be disheartening to see these go up for sale after the fact. Either way looking forward to seeing how this plays out.

I'm shit at designs but would love to see something like a silhouette of a BTC guy and an elderly grandpa figure from behind sitting on a mountain made up of Altcoin names/abbreviateions mixed in with special dates for BTC and the forum both good and bad, names from the past that that helped get us here . Gotta include some of the disasters like Mt. Gox in the mix.

1186  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: WhatsMiner M20 to be delayed 2-3 weeks (edit) may be 5-7 week delay not sure on: October 12, 2019, 01:20:50 AM
I noticed 1 or 2 people mention orders had shipped on their Telegram. I've also poked at Yang a bit about just abandoning their customer base. I'm not sure if they will take the advice or not but I essentially told them, "Even if it's bad news you still need to be actively engaging and communicating with your customers" On top of that I pointed out that they can't abandon that telegram group for days or weeks as they were allowing it to become a spam filled mess.
Glad to see people receiving their gear, stings extra hard on delays when you are watching the Diff climb and your break even extend further and further.
1187  Other / Meta / Re: Trust flags on: October 12, 2019, 01:16:36 AM
But it might be better for the creation of flags to be tied to merit rather than activity.
No. Newbies get scammed too, perhaps even at a higher rate than more experienced members, and need to be able to create flags.
I'd say it's a given they get scammed at a much higher rate, it's the nature of inexperience. The system checks itself by requiring support so I definitely agree everyone should be able to create a flag.
It is kind of ironic that the most trust flags are held by people that fight scams. Fortunately they are all inactive. (so that part works as designed)
No that makes perfect sense. Flags are easy to create so everyone and their alts can spam that system thinking it serves a purpose. They don't realize it's less effective than spamming false Negative feedback, because they are unsupported.

That's a great one. I remember when Diff adjustments first registered with me. Luckily it was a few months before I saw repeated double digit jumps. It was always explained but a link to solid sites that tracked it at the time would have been a great visual.
~snip~
That's a fair point but the thread isn't about consolidating that was just my experience. The link was so that others could go review and read information provided by a knowledgable person.

Now come on I'm sure you have an instance yourself you could share. Given the privacy nature of your reply maybe something along the lines of anonymity.
1189  Other / Beginners & Help / Misconceptions about Bitcoin and Altcoins on: October 11, 2019, 12:16:58 PM
So I'm a big fan of learning from ones mistakes and thought this could be applied in a different way. Everyone here started out with no knowledge of crypto and had to pick things up along the way, unfortunately not everything is useful, factual or complete. So I thought why don't we all take a minute and share some of our past learning moments, or misconceptions that once figured out were a "lightbulb" moment.
The goal here and reason for this board is it could be a fun and informative read for newbies to pick through. Best case scenario someone learns something, worst case scenario everyone points and laughs at your folly. Kidding, you won't see people pointing.

Consolidating inputs... huh, that's a thing?

So I'm going to start off. This still rings out in my head when I consider that I overlooked an opportunity to have adopted BTC much earlier. When I look into something I tend to dive in, multiple tabs open of explanations on the same point to try and encompass a full picture. Sometimes though, you find out later on these people weren't well enough informed themselves. I took a pass on carrying on with BTC, as I assumed TX fees would become astronomical with each additional transaction your BTC was involved in compounding infinitely without relief. Essentially the concept behind calculating fees and consolidating inputs, was lost and not properly conveyed through these articles. In my mind BTC would fail, as eventually those BTC would have so much history attached they would cost more to spend than they were worth.

Obviously a few years later the explanations had become better, and I realized that my particular issue was easily resolved. It still took me a while to figure out the best practices for this and I will link to a thread that covers it well. [OCT 2019] Fees are low, use this opportunity to Consolidate your small inputs!
1190  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Flag on Bounty_Manager on: October 11, 2019, 09:31:56 AM
Thank you for providing the screenshots to tie the accounts together. I have tagged the account and supported your flag. I'll try to follow the thread and any outcomes, if this is resolved please PM me.
1191  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Flag on Bounty_Manager on: October 11, 2019, 09:06:09 AM
I sent them a PM requesting they respond here. Do you have anything that makes it easier to tie the forum account to the account of the person you are talking with in the screenshots? I don't have time at the moment to go through it all and I'm not great at connecting those dots. If they log into the forum and don't respond here, I'll place a negative on the account until they do. I'll also do so for the open scam accusation if someone ties the forum account to the telegram chat.
1192  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Flag on Bounty_Manager on: October 11, 2019, 08:42:49 AM
First this is not a Meta issue, it has nothing to do with the forum. You should move this to Scam Accusations or Reputation depending on how you want to proceed.

You will need to provide proof of the arrangement you made. Provide as much information as possible. What if any response have you received from the Bounty manager? I didn't see anyone posting in the last page of the thread asking about bounty payments so,you may want to link to whatever thread there are complaints, if it's all of forum, tell them to come to your accusation thread. You will also need to be the primary by applying your own feedback and creating the flag seeking support.

To move it go to the bottom left and select "move topic"
1193  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [Question] Norman Rockwell Plates Any Interest? on: October 11, 2019, 07:41:41 AM
I found an article that lays it out fairly well. https://www.mlive.com/homeandgarden/2008/06/rockwell_plates_not_worth_a_lo.html
Nothing has changed in the 11 years since. My wife actually has a few around the house, she likes the nostalgic family scenes. She was shocked when I mounted them on the wall for her, then I said the mounting hardware was more valuable so Im not to worried. I got a pretty hard stare that day  Tongue
1194  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Bitmain is taking paypal !!!! on: October 11, 2019, 07:28:58 AM
8 months ago and my farm would probably have been full of Antminers. There have been a lot of times I've scrambled to get coins together or used coins I wanted to hold to grab gear, because wire transfers are shit for me anyways. I fully support any option that allows even a small amount of BTC to not be funneled into Bitmain, this is a nice Fiat on ramp imo. I do think it's just another way for them to push as much gear out the door between now and the halving because it will be a tougher sell convincing people to shell out BTC for gear leading into it.
With it being winter though it was almost tempting enough to grab some S9's.
I think most cryptocurrency investors/spectators are at least against Paypal. So kind of sad to see them accept this, but business is business.
You use the tools available though, and even if you can't stand something at times it is your best option.

1196  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: How to bypass KYC methods? on: October 11, 2019, 07:11:48 AM
Do not send fake documents for KYC. You are essentially forfeiting any rights to the coins should they choose to check, which I'm sure they will. I've never submitted fake documents, this day in age it's a terrible idea to attempt to pass off fake ID's. There are so many other options to get your hands on coins, if you don't want to use a KYC exchange. The Forums Marketplace for one has a currency exchange board. It will be tough to find someone to trust you for PP or something like that given your newbie account status.

P2P doesn't always come with a higher fee, some people are more than happy to go 1:1. I've never used it but someone was mentioning bisq as an option, which might work for you starting with small amounts at first. I've used Binance for a quick under $1000 purchase and would continue to do it, mind you I wasn't transferring Fiat, I was using crypto to buy coins.

Unfortunately it seems to be the trend that any business that has the ability to freeze your funds might just do so. It's a risk so be prepared to provide documents or take a loss.
1197  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: [HAVE] Bitcoin [WANT] PayPal on: October 11, 2019, 06:57:44 AM
What currency? USD CAD EUR. I'd be interested but I hate getting burned on PP conversion rates. Let me know and we could probably work something out.
1198  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Coinbase Locked my Bitcoin for 72 Hours. on: October 11, 2019, 05:48:25 AM
Never been asked for KYC upfront, when was this? My experience with them was 2 years or so ago I think, and it was actually fine.
I want to say 2018 sometime. Can't remember exactly what the circumstances were. I believe I was wanting to buy coins, or they had a promo. I'm not U.S based so it could have had something to do with that. It's been so long I can't remember for sure the what or why. It definitely wasn't just to use their wallet or anything like that.

Reading the first part of your post, that seems more inline with what I checked them out for.

They want photo ID to complete this withdrawal Right now but I don't want to provide the photo ID.
You mind telling us why you used Coinbase in the first place if you're not willing to submit KYC information? Not trying to be an ass here, but I thought identification details is mandatory with Coinbase if you're making buy/sell offers; and that big exchanges like Coinbase have been known to be demanding KYC information in the first place.
Yah pretty much I read op as “I want to hide in the shadows.”
At op either send a real id or stop complaining.
You simply need to understand coinbase is like a bank and needs real ids in many countries.  So if you don’t want to id yourself don’t and wait 72 hours. See if they force you to identify yourself after the time is up.
Maybe they will maybe they won’t.
If they were just using it as a wallet, should they really have to provide ID to anyone? If that's the requirement then take ID at the door, not when people try to leave.
1199  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Coinbase Locked my Bitcoin for 72 Hours. on: October 11, 2019, 03:50:31 AM
Man that sucks. I feel for yah, at least your withdrawal will process after the 3 day waiting period. Did they have anything like this in their terms that you are aware of? Definitely get off Coinbase, I never used them, when I did pretty sure they wanted KYC upfront so I don't think I ever went anything further than signing up.
Got the article from coinbase's reply to a guy with the same problem https://twitter.com/bitjefe/status/1178079211459923973
Hilarious, if you are sending to a new address... because no one uses different addresses  Roll Eyes .

I recently got he kick in the ass I needed to secure my coins more diligently, and avoid businesses handling them as much as possible. Pretty much from now on unless I'm comfortable never seeing the coins again, they're not going on a platform that can hijack control from me.
