Repost from https://forums.nxtcrypto.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=530:

Thinking about vote weighting here:

One of the major issues with a voting system is deciding how to weight the votes.

As examples:

One NXT account = one vote will inevitably lead to the creation of zillions (or lots) of sock-puppet accounts purely for voting. Giving an account with 2 NXT the same voting weight as one with 2,000,000 is also unfair on larger stakeholders who have much more invested in NXT than the smaller accounts.

...

My proposal is:

One NXT = one vote, with depreciation of voting weight from a certain point.

...

Only problem I can see is that if a whale does want to unfairly influence voting they could split up his/her/its NXT holdings over multiple smaller accounts. However, this seems like a lot of work and would be visilble in the blockchain, if anyone cared to check.

Statement 1: there will be created zillions of sock puppet accounts
Statement 2: Creating hundreds of sock puppet accounts seems like a lot of work

?

Good point.

The difference is that with one account = one vote anyone can generate 1000's of sock puppets and get more voting power. Almost no NXT needed.

With a depreciating vote weight only whales will benefit from having multiple accounts, and they will have to not only create the puppets, but split up their NXT holdings into the puppet accounts to get extra voting power, which I'm not sure will happen on a large scale. Whales will still have lots of voting power anyway, and I don't think they will be willing to split up a 1 megaNXT account into, for example, 100 x 10kNXT accounts, just to get some extra voting power.

I might be wrong, but I can see very big problems with both one account = one vote and one NXT = one vote.
Depreciating voting weight may not be a perfect solution, but I think it will work better than the simpler options.

Giving an account with 2 NXT the same voting weight as one with 2,000,000 is also unfair on larger stakeholders who have much more invested in NXT than the smaller accounts.

One NXT = one vote will mean that the largest stakeholder will always win, and that anyone who holds less than a million NXT could just as well not vote at all. Not really fair on the smaller accounts, and as NXT gets more evenly distributed (and the price rises Wink ) there will at a certain point only be a few hundred whale accounts (from investors/early adopters) and zillions (or lots) of smaller accounts, some of which may represent a substantial investment of fiat currency for late adopters.

U cant keep everyone happy all of the time.

My proposal is:

One NXT = one vote, with depreciation of voting weight from a certain point.
This is meant purely as an example, so don't jump on my numbers:

Up to 10,000 NXT : one NXT=one vote.
From 10,000 upwards, reduce the voting weight gradually so that by around the 1,000,000 mark one NXT = 0.01 votes, and so on down until there is almost no difference in the voting power of a 5 megaNXT account and a 10megaNXT account.
This will allow everyone with a substantial NXT holding to have a certain amount of voting power, while reducing the ability of whale accounts to decide the results of all votes.

Only problem I can see is that if a whale does want to unfairly influence voting they could split up his/her/its NXT holdings over multiple smaller accounts. However, this seems like a lot of work and would be visilble in the blockchain, if anyone cared to check.

Thats it, let me know what u think. Like I need to ask.....

a nice article:
A New Wave of 2nd Generation Cryptocurrencies: NXT, eMunie, SkyCoin, EarthCoin
http://alunacrypto.blogspot.cz/2013/12/a-new-wave-of-2nd-generation.html

Found some distressing news about emunie developer https://ripple.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=5399

Seems he is a known scammer, but it is all third hand, so best if you make your own conclusions. Seems to be very suspicious that the presale was closed based on the reason that trolls took up too much of his time. Huh?

If anybody knows of a serious competitor to NXT, please post about it. Need to know what the competition is up to. At this point, I am putting emunie in the potential competitor category. Until there is an open beta and/or open src, it could all be vaporware for all we know. Has anybody here actually used the beta of emunie?

James

I'm going to conclude that eMunie (scam or not) is toast. Dead. Not happening.
Just read Fuserleers (eMunies lead dev/creator/lord of all creation) post here:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=412118.0

The tl:dr version is that eMunie will not launch on schedule because fuserleer is upset by the trolls.
It's a very bad sign for eMunies credibility that one guy can derail what is potentially a massive project because he's a bit upset by criticism.
(...)

How you call in english a person who repeat anonimous accusations without checking them?

I understand that it is a real war with big money on stake but seriously how big thoughtless ignorant you should be to repeat such things? You don't get that it is attack on a real person damaging his reputation?

Here is Dan responce: http://forum.emunie.com/index.php?/topic/36-hi-im-dan/

Internet is part of ppl's real lifes. Recall it yourself next time seeing someone attacking NXT in the same nasty manner...

There is a lot of nasty attacks, blackmails on all altcoins with potential to surpass Bitcoin and change the world. There are real cyberattacks on dgex and NXT infrastructure and reputation too so you should see that this is part of something big is going on here.

If you want all of them to survive and be still free of take over / killing them attempts remember that we all are on the same board! And when one is attacked all of us are damaged and targeted.

Have U actually read Dan/fuserleers post on Bitcointalk?
I did, and what he himself said makes me very doubtful about eMunies future. If one person, in response to some criticism, can shut down a major project, then there is a problem with that project.

Look at the amount of criticism/trolling/hacks/DDoS attacks that NXT has gone thru in the last month. Has it been shut down by BCNext ?

I don't want to spread FUD and I am not going to start now, so just read all of the thread and make your own mind up.

EDIT: U will probably notice that I have made no accusations about Dan one way or another, he seems like a nice enough bloke.
I wish him all the best, but I'm not going to rush to invest in eMunie any time soon.

2165  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: GOLD BARS Launching 18th January 2014 on: January 12, 2014, 11:17:23 PM

Coin Information

GoldBars (also known as GoldBullion, GoldIngots, Gold  and TrueGold)
This new “Alt-Coin” is part of a brand new group of asset based crypto currency including SilverBar and PlatinumBar supported by real gold, silver and platinum.
We see Gold, Silver and Platinum......

So, er, how much gold have u purchased in order to support the currency?

Is that a rhetorical question?  Cheesy

I mean, zero is a number too, right?

It is indeed, but I had hoped that supported by real gold, silver and platinum meant that it was supported by real gold, silver and platinum.

Just like back in the 19th century, sweet.

I have an idea......why dont the GoldBars devs buy a shit-load of G,S+P, lock it up in a big steel box, and then write on a piece of paper that they will give a certain amount of gold (or S or P) to anyone with the piece of paper. We can then buy these pieces of paper from them.

So we exchange BTC for the piece of paper and then use the paper to buy stuff with. Much easier than carrying a computer down to the supermarket.

Lets call the pieces of paper "notes" or maybe "bigsteelboxnotes"

Still, it saves a lot of time and effort. Get scammed and lose all your money before the coin even launches.....good idea!
No having to mine or worry about market prices. Straight from money to no money in one easy step.

I've sent u all my BTC and my girlfriend, and her mother.
Can't wait for the launch.

Important question that just popped into my head:

Are we going to capitalise NXT or just use Nxt or even nxt ?
As u can see, i like the capitals.

I'll throw a poll up on Nxtcrypto for this, wait a bit......

I read that as "are we going to capitalise on Nxt"  Cheesy

Ontopic: I use Nxt all the time, but NXT makes it appropriately in your face. Just a bit harder to type all the time.

We are all going to capitalise on NXT.......mwaahhhaaaahhaaa!

Anyhow, put up a poll on nextcoin.org:

https://nextcoin.org/index.php/topic,2893.0.html

So if u care, get in and vote. I'm winning at the moment.....

We'll see a fork soon, some nodes run old NRS without AM support...

So we all need to get up to version 5.5, or are there older, AM-compatible clients?

watch out for scams with so called "2nd gen" crypto and IPO releases!

I believe that if all these so called devs are so confident with their creations and are asking for investments prior to having anything to show but a few paragraphs selling a dream, then DO release some of your information as well as LEGIT contact information other than a account name on the forum!

ANYONE WHO BELIEVES IN THIS PLEASE QUOTE AND LET MAKE MORE AWARE SO THEY DONT FALL PREY TO POSSIBLE SCAMS!

Chill, bro, this is an attempt to catch a scammer, not to float yet another "2nd, 3rd, 4th...generation crypto-currency".

So have u guys called in ........da da da daaaaa......rickyjames yet?

BTW, I like the idea of tracking down Visacoin, hate the idea of cloning NXT.
How about offering all of the Visacoin investors/victims the chance to transfer their recovered funds into NXT at a discounted price?

Enough negativity, on to NXT:

@Asianprepper et al:

NXT must be NXT, not next, not nextcoin, not lovelyjubblynextcash....

It's NXT, and has to be NXT, for one simple reason: google NXT, then google next. See the difference?

And yes, Damelon, Pin, we do need to get on over to Nxtcrypto (or even nextcoin.org) forums more. This thread is driving me mad, and i'd like to have a wider spread of smaller threads covering important topics.

From a sales/marketing perspective... I think that calling Nextcoin by "Nxt" instead of "Nextcoin" is a huge mistake.

Nothing kills adoption faster then "confusion".  Calling something "Nxt" is confusing as hell.  I know u commented on my video once n asked me to use the term Nxt instead of Nextcoin n it took several weeks before I realized what you were even talking about.

I think we should have stuck with the term "Nextcoin".

Instead of relying on fancy names to promote Nextcoin, we should be focused on making solid features on Nxt and make it as user friendly and easy to understand as possible.

This is one area that is still lacking in the crypto market despite the fact that we have dozens of different currencies.

people who are already in the crypto currency market can figure out and understand what "Nxt" is… But people new to the crypto currency market will have no clue (unless they do extensive research) to even know that Nxt is a crypto currency.

Confusion is not good for public adoption...

Nextcoin would be just as confusing, because Nxt isn't a coin, or rather not just a coin. The "coin" is part of the larger system.

I clearly understand that nxt is not a coin.  What do you think people will find when they search for "what is nextcoin?" vs. "what is nxt?" on google?

Right now, the only people that know nxt is a crypto are people on these forums... in order to get massive adoption it's important that the non technie public can "instantly" recognized the term we use.

Do you think people will understand "nextcoin" easier or just using the words "next"?

I understand we want to differentiate ourselves from btc to show that we are unique n different.  We can do that by making nxt easier to "use"  rather then using a fancy name that does nothing but causes confusion.

I've known and invested in btc n cryptos for a yr now n still did not know what "next" was when I heard n saw it for the first time... however, i instantly knew what the term "nextcoin" meant the first time i heard it.

Imagine how a new public user would think when they first hear the term "next".  don't put urself in ur shoes. put yourself in the shoes of a new non techie user.

I think that the problem with having "coin" appended to NXT is that NXT is not just intended as a crypto-currency, but will become an entire eco-system built around the blockchain.

Calling it Nextcoin will give the impression that it has no more to offer than BitCoin, DogeCoin, CatCoin, RonPaulCoin... (etc, etc)....when in reality there is going to be way more to NXTthan simply pushing money round the interwebs.

I've been doing my best to help out here, mostly because I believe in NXT and its community. But I'm not exactly holding a lot of NXT and I have a VPS to feed..... (got 9000 at the mo, over 2 accounts and DGEX)

Thank u very much, bro
2176  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: NXT coin - A total scam? on: January 11, 2014, 02:12:58 AM
Rofl hard.....NXT may have an initial distribution issue, but there is no way that it can be called a scam coin.

And, funnily, almost all of the "problems" with NXT that the FUD trolls are screaming about could also be found in another dodgy crypto-currency that some dude called Satoshi threw together in his kitchen 5 years ago.....and she/he/they/it also pre-mined (or very early mined, more accurately) around 1 million of those dubious Bitcoins.

Buy NXT now and hold. If i'm wrong, come round my house in 5 years time....

Or u could check out Visacoin, if u want an actual, real scamcoin. U can still invest....

Maco is asking a ridiculous amount of NXT as a bounty.
So i'm saying no to his proposal in its current form.

But: an Android app would be useful. If Maco is willing to release it to the community, see how it works, and then recieve a reasonable bounty based on his apps performance, I might be more sympathetic.....

Now wouldn’t it be great to have something substantial before the start of a media campaign.

As of now I think nexern will have a client within three weeks.
Maybe you can work together with nexern and put it in a nice package.
And I agree with Klee we need the white paper.
Don’t know what others think about priotorization but imo:

1)   Stable running servers and software
2) white paper
3)   A nice looking client
4)   Media campaign

and if possible before the end of the month Grin

Until those issues are resolved, though, I believe that all the marketing savvy NXT folks should start making a BIG STINK out of the fact that NOBODY has been able to find a flaw yet in the other topic!  Who knows? ...such marketing stunt could continue all the way till April 3!!!  Grin

You know, I've been reading that thread with NO knowledge of code whatsoever with the intention of being able to write about it.

So far the only angle that presents itself to me is "people are doing  Huh, about  Huh, but apparantly all is still  Grin. There is some  Roll Eyes going on, but CfB has went  Tongue and  Wink, so all is probably well"

I'm so out of my league there that I feel like I'm a toddler that's been admitted to university.

Yep, I'm with u there. Any code more advanced that a 3 line .bat file makes my brain go into Homer S. mode.

But I did read the bug threads, and it seems like a case of "no news is good news".
Lots of smart people, some of them very anti-NXT, have taken the code to pieces and can't find any show-stopping problems. Yay  Grin

I'm thinking a bit at the moment about marketing, and it seems to me that we need to take a "big bang" approach at a certain moment in the near future, just drop a massive, co-ordinated marketing bomb on the world.

The first 2 things we need are:

1) A truly stable and idiot proof client for Windows and Mac.
2) Simple, reliable exchanges capable of handling serious trade volume.

Once we have those 2 things up and running to everyones satisfaction, then we drop the marketing bomb and watch the world run to NXT......

The bomb needs to consist of:

Press releases, both to the web and to old-school news sources (TV, print, radio....)

A publicity stunt (like the idea from 400 pages ago of giving 1 mega-NXT to Max Keiser)

Giveaways, guides and promotions for the new NXT users.

Publicity materials and giveaways, such as stickers, T-shirts and other swag

I'm gaing to be having a chat with some marketing guys in the next few days, see if I can turn my vague ideas into some sort of real plan. Might open a topic on nxtcrypto for this later in the evening, got to go AFK for a while.

Tell me what ya think, anyhow.

@Damelon.....the mimes are coming.

And now I really am going to bed

The walkthru above is very helpful, but there are a couple of points to pay attention to:

I had to install Java, obviously, but then had a problem with Windows not recognizing Java commands at all.
If u get the error on the cmd line of "Java is not recognised...blah,blah..." u will need to edit yr path variable as explained here:
https://forums.bukkit.org/threads/how-to-fix-java-is-not-recognized-as-an-internal-command-or-external-command.139263/

Make sure u edit the web.xml file to allow all users. (Otherwise u get "the Matrix has you" on connection.)
Here are the lines in question:

      <init-param>
         <param-name>allowedUserHosts</param-name>
         <param-value>127.0.0.1; localhost; 0:0:0:0:0:0:0:1;</param-value>
      </init-param>

change to:

      <init-param>
         <param-name>allowedUserHosts</param-name>
         <param-value>*</param-value>
      </init-param>

Thats it, thx to Pin for inspiring me to get off my ass and Baimangal for the guide.

Onwards and upwards....
