1821  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: February 05, 2014, 09:02:01 PM
I am completely updated, used the 5.11 blockchain on my home nodes, rebuilt from scratch on the VPS. Seems to work fine in both cases....

So could everyone else update to 5.12, please ?

For the rest :

Take some chill pills, guys. We've made a hell of a lot of progress over the last couple of months. There are always going to be moments when things dont go quite as we'd like them to and people start to get grumpy and take it out on each other.

So relax a bit, we are still ahead of the game and heading in roughly the right direction.....and almost as a unit.

Heres a quick re-post from me from last night, seems appropriate to put it up again:

Now that I've caught up with this thread, and it's almost bed time for the Evil one, I've got a couple of non-coding points to make:
(love the code talk, btw, I can smell the big-brain coding skills from here, it's the smell of success!)

Great job everyone, these last few pages of juicy dev talk are giving me the first nxt hard-on this february.
+1

Voting:
NXTvote.com looks tight
Damn right on that, having nxtvote up and running will make decisions around here a lot easier and probably fairer.

Most important bit: CfB and BCNext:

We've always known that CfB wasn't going to be around forever as NXT dev-in-chief.
He's a talented guy and without him, NXT would not be what it is today.
But we have a lot of talented guys (take a bow, everyone) and more coming in every day. NXT will carry on without CfB and will still be a success. We got thru 4 days without him last week, and made some good progress in that time.

It's easy to see guys in important roles as irreplaceable leaders, but the truth is that anyone can be replaced.
So stop looking at him like he's the Messiah, he's just a very naughty boy.

BCNext has good reason to be Mr. Anonymouse, look at the amount of pressure that gets put on Dan/Fuserleer from eMunie. Every time he sneezes, eMunie catches a cold. He definitely doesn't want to be the Messiah....
With BCNext in the background, communicating only with mysterious prophesies and complex code, the NXT community is forced to step up and build almost everything we need ourselves, which makes NXT a lot stronger than if we always had the option to turn to BCNext and ask "What do we do now, Daddy?"

Ask yourselves this: if CfB was always going to be here, and BCnext was actually present and working, what would NXT look like now ?
A massive community, or 2 guys working and a 1000 watching?

Last point:
Get on with each other, ffs, save the fighting until we are on our island paradise in the Maldives.....we can build a Thunderdome!

1822  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: February 05, 2014, 06:15:07 PM
Fixed a critical bug. Everybody should upgrade immediately.
So my paranoia wake up.

What is the bug?! Do I need to decompile pair of sources and do diff and than do analyse just before upgrade?
Do you try to hide something from evil hackers? I think they are first who do analysis on decompiled sources...

Don't waste ur time, it will be fully disclosed anyway.

Shouldnt this announcement be in big bold red letters all over the place? How do you expect everyone to upgrade due to a critical bug if you don't make it seem serious and disclose the matter nonchalantly.

let me:

Upgrade to 5.12 NOW, please.

There, much less nonchalant....
1823  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: February 05, 2014, 06:11:10 PM
fee: 0.1

Only few will continue to forge for 0.01 at today's price, plus it's cheap to spam the blockchain.
Lower the fee again when price rises above 10$.

+1

Voting for 0.1 NXT fee. See achimsmile for reasons....

Hmmm...i like the drama of gold on black, but I can see your point. Maybe slightly too Evil....
I'll have a fiddle with colours if i get some time later on.
Any feedback on text or layout ?

Text and layout are fine. Good readability, especially for a sticker with those dimensions.

Personally I would make a sticker with the color scheme of the nxtcrypto site.
Keep everything in the same style, so that it's easily recognizable, for now at least.

Wouldn't it also be wise to choose one logo as THE logo? The "think green" one is especially pleasing and clever:

- It promotes eco-friendliness
- It shows it's a coin currency  Wink
- nxtcrypto.org is mentioned
- It has those NXT symbols

And it's very distinct.

I'l have a fiddle around tonight with PornShopPro and come up with some alternate designs.
I'd like to be able to get some stickers to the guys on the Berlin conference, so we need to get a move on
Feedback, guys, feedback...need to know what people think of the stickers before I commit to printing up a few 100.

1824  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] [NEX] Nxt Reimagined on: February 05, 2014, 05:54:02 PM
So this is the MAIN development thread, FC ?
It's a little bit busy for my tastes, I'll come back when it's quieter.
1825  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: February 05, 2014, 11:36:42 AM
Guys:
Been waiting for a good bumper sticker design, got bored and did one myself:

279mm x 76mm, when printed.
Would like feedback on it, might be good to have it in the hands of the guys at Berlin conference if it gets the green light

Leave your feedback on the marketing thread here on BTT:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=412243.530
or on Nextcoin.org:
https://nextcoin.org/index.php/topic,3540.15.html

Going to bed now, really.

I don't get all the dark themes.
It makes it look, well, dark/evil/bad/star wars

Personally I would make the theme MUCH brighter. Give it a light airy look.
One of the USP's IS green / lightweight after all.

Hmmm...i like the drama of gold on black, but I can see your point. Maybe slightly too Evil....

My usual post and run technique:

The nxtcrypto.org forum can be improved massively by changing the style to prosilver in the control panel.
Default style did my head in, did not like.
Hopefully we can get the default changed,
(thanks to optical and others for the tip, btw)

I got bored waiting for someone else to come up with stickers, so I mades this:

Used Marek's logo, hope he doesn't mind. Its bumper sticker format, so it'll be 279mm x 76mm when printed.
Could I have some feedback on it soon ?
Be nice to get some to the Berlin conference guys, if it gets a positive reaction.

Dude: U changed the color on the top bar !

Did that take very long ?
U must be the best dev in the whole wide world....

I'm sure there's other changes too, not just the colour on the top bar.

FrictionlessCoin: we see the change in the top bar, and I think I speak on behalf of the community when I say it's an improvement, but are there any other changes in this client compared to the default NXT client? The blocks in the screenshot suggest it is running on the NXT block chain, not the NEX one, and the addressing scheme seems unchanged.

This is only an Alpha version of the client.   This will evolve over time so that it would be substantially different from what you are familiar with in the Nxt world.
So your Alpha nex client only differs from the default NXT client by having a different color on the top bar?
Have u made any other changes ? Port assignments, maybe?

Edit: the unlock website authorisation key looks a bit confused about its position, FC, maybe u could put it back.

Yes...but if u accessorise with a bigger chainsaw, it has a slimming effect.
1830  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [NXT] Community nominations to the funding comittee on: February 05, 2014, 12:25:59 AM
On a slightly different point....

snip!

..agents.

By separating funds access from funds allocation, we remove the need to know about anyones identity. I want to make sure we hear ALL the best ideas. Let the best idea win. Who cares about what the passport of the person who has the best idea is???

If we lose a SINGLE person due to ID requirement, that is one person too many.

If a committee member misses a vote, we just give a warning. Three warnings and then off the committee. Simple, easy, no ID required

James

Fair enough, my offer will remain open if it's ever needed for anything in the future.

Hi,
you have a hard life because of that aspegner (or something like this), so it is harder to fit into the community and stay there without emotional breakdowns. If sometimes noone supports you, it doesn't mean we all hate you. Someone doesn't understand, others don't won't to argue... I hope you will be fine. As was said, you can always go outside, read some nice book to relax Smiley

and a +1 to salsacz.

Somedays you eat the bear, somedays the bear eats you....

Stay, u are doing good work.

Bro, we are all going to get some flak sometime. I seem to remember getting some from u.......but that's not important. Grin
I see u as a dedicated NXTer with talent and skills to bring to the community.
So stay in the game.

If u get criticism, either accept it (if its valid) and change your game or, if it's just FUD, tell it to STFU.

Anyhow.....STAY!

On a slightly different point, ie real-world identities of the committee members, in case they decide to make a run for Costa Rica.
I'm assuming that everyone is happy to provide ID/address/telephone nr information to a few trusted individuals, but not to the entire community. Yep ? But who do you trust with your ID info?

I'm prepared to act as one of the ID verification agents, both to check that committee members ID info is correct and to store that info in strict confidentiality unless needed in the event of a problem.

We'll need to work out procedures for this, for example to set conditions for the release of ID info, and to establish an escalation procedure if one of the committee members gets up to something dodgy (or just goes away suddenly, like CfB and his appendix recently)

I'm also completely OK with revealing my ID details to anyone who stores their ID info with me.
Think we will need 2 or 3 ID verification agents, in case one is not available for whatever reason.

Let me know what u think, and also think about proposing some other people as ID verification agents.

1836  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: February 03, 2014, 10:50:13 PM
and how its supposed to do to move all the people from one forum to another ?
? ? ?

Quantum Tunneling.

Or we could hire a big truck, it is a lot of people.

(Seriously, we just open threads on the new forum, with a link to the old forum threads. People will use both forums for a while, then, hopefully, everyone will slowly move on over to the new.)

@Damelon: yeah, I really like the BTT thread layout. Nextcoin is almost as good, but nxtcrypto just doesn't do it for me.
1837  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: February 03, 2014, 10:30:17 PM

First marketing thing to do should be to use a specific forum for NXT instead of creating multiple threads on this bitcoin forum.

This long thread isn't easy to follow, and now you re creating more around ?  Huh

+1^100000

I have said this for weeks now. Let's start using the forum NEXTCOIN.ORG where we have 4500 active members. Why the hell are the main decisions still being made in this neverendingthread that is more disorganized than a crackhead?

Actually it should be nxtcrypto.org - if everyone moves there, members will come. Best to use a forum that is independent.

I agree with this completely and have brought it up several times why we don't post on nxt's forum instead of btc forum.

What do you think a new user/investor's first impression is when they arrive at nxt forum n it's a deserted ghost town.

I highly recommend we chose one centralized nxt forum n everyone post there.  Since nextcoin.org is own by dgex.com i suggest we post on nxtcrypto.org just to eliminate the conflict of interest. also, since no one wants to use the name "nextcoin" (except myself), i propose we use nxtcrypto.

Also, it would be helpful if people discuss marketing/promotion in it's own thread instead of discussing it in the development thread.

Trying to have the longest alt coin thread btc talk is not gonna have a long term benefit for nxt.

Tai Zen

+ lots.
This thread is doing my head in, tbh. It's getting a lot harder to stay on top of current events, and we even have poor old Damelon spending hours per day just on summarising the damn thing.

It could easily be split off into 4 or 5 monster threads on one of the other fora, instead of one Godzilla thread like now.
And think about the situation 3 or four months down the line, when we have 10x (100x .....1000X) times the current users.

It is a very impressive thread, though. Someone should get hold of backups and save them for our grandkids....or make a book.
1838  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [NXT] Community nominations to the funding comittee on: February 03, 2014, 05:19:21 PM
One note (I think it's obvious): we should strive to put those people on the committee, who don't have large pet projects of their own.
Which is one reason I don't want to be nominated.
I'm still going to try to reach some sort of concensus agreement about the green marketing aspects of NXT.

My nominations (at the moment) are:

Tech Committee:

Davethetrousers
Anon136
Wesleyh

Infrastructure Committee:
Opticarrier
laowai80
ferment
rickyjames (as a reserve?)

Marketing Committee:
Salsacz
Uniqueorn
Utopianfuture
Joefox
Nifty
Tai Zen

<head rises slowly from trench, looks around cautiously...>

Is it safe to come out now ?

This is just gonna be a very quick post, then back into my nice safe trench to get some work done.

I was stupid. Sorry,
I really thought that if i proposed a carbon-offset project that had almost nothing to do with the C02/anthropogenic global warming issue, that we could both promote NXT and do some good in the wider world. Reforestation and cleaner cooking tech for the developing world, how evil is that?

Well, we all saw how that turned out. I think that, as a European, I really don't get how divisive this issue is for the US.
I know that if I walked into a marketing meeting in any Euro-based business and made the same proposal, everyone would yawn and tell me that they'd done that last year and could I come up with something original. It's just so not an issue here......

But I'm not going to give up on the core idea: get some good publicity/marketing for NXT via green issues and/or doing good things.
I'm  going to go thru all of the feedback I've had, (positive + negative) and see if we can work something out that keeps all sides happy.
Or close to happy. I'm willing to discuss every aspect of my proposal, given some constructive feedback.

If anyone still feels the need to call me a mealy-mouthed, environmentalist, commie Al Gore on a mission to guilt trip everyone for being human and steal all of your money to give to abortion clinics, I'll be back on in a few hours. Save it till then.........
1840  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: February 03, 2014, 03:01:52 AM
That went well.....not!  Huh
I'm now going to re-post the carbon-offset proposal with all of the GW-related material censored, which was only about 10% of my original post.

I think you should scratch your carbon offsets in favor of something less controversial. A proposal for subsidies to provide free abortions to the less fortunate? It will probably be less divisive.  Cheesy

Imagine the marketing opportunity if we had abortion clinics that accepted Nxt as payment.  Grin

That sounds like a laugh, but no.

Heres an idea....someone else come up with a marketing project that can have as much of an impact in terms of free publicity (if handled right) as mine and I'll listen. Might even read it.....

Hey ED

I think your idea is great, but I do think its an ace to be saved in our sleeves. We will always be low power. Bitcoin will always be high power.

I have an idea for marketing, low cost, and will be directly trackable so Sgt RickyJames will be able to determine the (agreeably valuable CPC)

I have Wesley working on a faucet, QBTC sent me graphics, but I need a graphic designer to help put together the cards.

Please have a read and LET ME KNOW you think

https://nextcoin.org/index.php/topic,3441.msg32673.html#msg32673

I like it. Damelon has a promising link with some design dudes, maybe he could get these sorted out as a priority.
Now i really am going to bed, I'll have a better look later in the am.
