If you get the bug, like i did, it starts with the on hand GPU's and goes up from there. But if you want to make any real progress you will have to be talking in at least Gh/s not Mh/s. I agree with the USB approach. Great way to get started. Welcome to the pool!

I just started this today, and to be honest I have no idea how this really works. I have been mining since around 1 pm (almost 6 hours). I have a NVIDIA card (4 gig) gtx 680 FTW, which shows to be getting between 114-117.6 Mhash, however my account info only shows 80Mhash. I also notice the more shares (currently 420) I have the lower my estimated reward drops.

 80MH/s sounds about right for a high end Nvidia, hope you got free electricity or you will be paying a lot for the bit dust you mine. good luck   and welcome to the pool.

Hopefully it won't up my bill much, but if so I guess this will just be an occasional thing.

You should consider at least just starting with a USB block erupter. For $30 you can get 300mh/s and don't need to worry about burning out the GPU. Back in early November a USB erupter was $10, either way it's better than beating on the GPU, assuming the computer has some alternate uses other than mining...

I would say getting an ANT Miner is a better option, they don't cost a great deal more but they have a much better hashing power.

I just bought the blade eruptor, but you feel the ant minter is better?? Can I run one of each at a time?

Yeah they are, they aren't too much more cost wise, but run at 1.6 ghash/sec by defaul but can be over clocked, I have mine running at 2ghash/sec each.

You can run them side by side yeah. I use minepeon on a raspberry pi and the cgminer and bfminer in peon doesn't support the ants out the box so you have to re-compile it to include the driver but its easy enough.

I got the bug, like you did, and it happened just like you said, but I started with the cpu's just as the gpu's got going.

Yeah, we'll be going the usb route, I'm thinking 2 ant miners and 2 erupters (for starters) in the next week or two and hopefully work our way up a bit more as we go, and just occasionally use the gpus for a little boost from time to time.

Run the GPUs if ya want. It is an easy way to decide if ya like what you are doing. Even USBs can be a losing proposition, but it is a foot in the door. There is more to life than just profits. Have fun and enjoy what you are doing. There is enjoyment to be found by some in just seeing their hashrate grow from adding new equipment over time. And then, there is the race to increase your hashrate faster than the difficulty rises. This is a losing game but it can be addicting.

That's the plan We'll start somewhat small and I'm hopeful work our way up, we just need to get our feet wet before diving in.

My first software used was GUI miner, and I'm not a techie either. Just jump into bfgminer and figure it out, a living brain is a learning brain. You will get good at everything through failing fast and getting mistakes out of the way early; GUI miner is a mistake, learn and move on, faster the better.

I think I put in the wrong password in Multiminer as I have been mining for 2 days and have nothing to show for it in Slush's pool.

It asks for my miner name then password. I used the password for the site, but am thinking I was supposed to use my password for my worker.

Does anyone know which one I am supposed to use?

I still haven't messed with multi-miner, but I did buy his app because I plan to try it out. Typically (always) you will put the worker info into the mining software, and don't worry about making it strict, worst-case scenario is someone accidentally aims their miner at your worker account (very unlikely though). Also, make sure you use correct pool URL. Then go to Slush>my account login and make sure the "last share at" column says "0 minutes" for that worker and shares etc are accumulating.

I like the set up and ease of use for multiminer. I have also used the bitminter software as well.

There are several others that I just cannot figure out.

I am not sure how to change or update the "Last share at" setting. I tried to use the EDIT button, but there was nothing there to change.

When setting up the pool settings in my miner would it be:

just wanted to share this experience:
cgminer 3.8.4  did not work well with these things, i use bfgminer 3.10 right now. so far my HW Error rate dropped from 65%(!) to 3.2% (still dropping)

Do you mean the USB Blue Fury or Red Fury or the bitfury based boards (there are quite a few of those including Drillbit and others)?
Both the latest cgminer and bfgminer support the USB miners, and some of the boards.  I also use bfgminer 3.10 with some of these and cgminer 3.10 with others.  What sort of hash rate are you getting?  There is a support thread for for the Blue/Red Fury at  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=319419.0

I don't know the miner count for these (check mining support threads, and https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Avalon#Cgminer_status_page), however  HW should be the hardware error count.  A small percentage (say less than 5%) is probably ok, but if it is high than too many of your shares are not effective and you need to find out why (power supply issues? cooling? settings?).
