Less than 7% of merits awarded are to new topics. Isn't that a surprising statistic?
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4181253.0

Well I guess Post Number is referring to the post number in a topic, it does not mean new or old topic.

For example 6.81% of the time opening post got merits

and for post# 501+ i guess this is due to mega threads like Wall Observer, if we exclude this, I'm sure percentage will be much higher on opening post.

I think it is often a good idea to remove outliers from statistics. Wall Observer would be a good example along with this thread and the April Fool thread that distort the OP end.

As long as you don't start any posts you won't have any merits even 2+ years actively replying in this forum. Is this right?

Nevermind. I did some research and found users that have merits with them after 300+ activity without starting a thread. With this,

Is there an activity threshold that creates some default merit?
Or is my question doesn't make sense?

Yes; when it was introduced everyone got the minimum merit amount for their rank to start off with.

Yeap, this is basic principle of statistics. Outliers might lead to mis-interpretation of statistical analysis, and should be remove or truncate to create a sub--dataset of outliers to make further analysis on those abnormal cases.
This is why I proposed zentdex to use Mean +/- standard deviations, and Median (Interquartile range) in his analysis.

Of course, new topic means post number 1.
I wasn't referring to a topic which wasn't discussed before when I said new topic.  Smiley

I think there may be a slight misinterpretation of my data here: The "1" column represents posts that are awarded sMerit, being that the OP post in this case. This has happened on 6891 Ops, that is, is 15% of posts awarded any sMerit at all.
The numbers on the graph show the number of posts that got merited in that position, but do not show the aggregate of sMerits received.

I think it is often a good idea to remove outliers from statistics. Wall Observer would be a good example along with this thread and the April Fool thread that distort the OP end.
That’s true in most contexts. Nevertheless, Wall observer and Ann threads that receive sMerit on posts numbers 500 and above are not outliers but rather more a norm in their section/subsection. From a global overview's perspective  I think it's correct to keep this data.
Since this specific graph does not aggregate sMerit, but counts the number of posts awarded in that position, the April Fools thread OP counts as 1.

I think that tagging may be appropriate in particularly obvious cases, or particularly egregious cases involving hundreds of merit points and several posts. But generally you should start out by assuming good faith, and only change that opinion as the evidence really piles up. Tagging someone immediately after an instance of apparently-inexplicable meriting is too trigger-happy IMO. Even if it is a case of illegitimate merit, even hundreds of illegitimate merit points are not much of a problem IMO, so you have to ask whether it's worthwhile to possibly make a mistake by tagging someone who is merely suspicious.

I think merit system emplement for reduce spamming and shitposting from the forum. If abuse or misuse merit system on shitpost and they are not punished, so what meaning of upgrade with merit system ? If abuse , trade and buy sale merit so what is benifite will get from this system ? Some one getting 50+ merit on replay of ANN and some one 0 merit even he make HQ quality post.
I think you need upgrade this system again to make it more useful.

Certainly, we can see improvements and changes to the merit system in future.

In my opinion, success o a large forum is dependent mainly on the good members there. It is responsibility of genuine members here not only to make good posts but to also report abuse of forum rules including those related to merit.

Since this update was put into gear I have seen much less drive in anyone to post on this forum. Not only did you absolutely butcher the chances of ranking up within a couple months of being active, but you made hundreds of people leave and no longer use this site. It is nearly impossible to gain 90 merit because gaining merit to give out is so damn hard.

I've only received 2 merit points to give out over the time the system has been implemented. It literally will take over 6 months minimum to gain 90 merit on this forum unless you are super known. This basically created a monopoly for the already highly ranked users here on the forum. Waiting for the day for you guys to either remove this system, or make it more balanced.

I had to agree with your comment, there should be some tweaks for the merit system and system to be implemented for monitoring of merit abuse. It would be nice if there is demirit button for such kind of merit abuse scenarios.

When I looking to the stats of merits, I have found that most of the recent top merited replies coming from [ANN] treads. That is not the sole purpose of merit system implementation as far to my knowledge. It will leads even more people for those treads and shitposting.
Check these stats Top merited recent replies and decide how the merit system manipulated by ANN treads.

I haven't noticed that the forums have become less active, although I agree that ranking up is to hard currently. My expectation is that they are considering balance updates; although it is taking a while.

Learn to read before posting would be the best thing you could do. In this instance, you have found the thread where everything you could possible want to know about Merit is explained but rather than start off by reading the OP you posted to ask.

Some users are able to give "merit", based on how much merit they have been granted already. If these users feel like giving someone merit, they can. Ideally, if you post quality content, a user, with merit giving potential, will give you merit. Smiley

That's a pretty nice update but it has some shortcomings, how will those users that a Merit sources see all post and give out merits to them?
This is a big challenge as everyone on this forum will want to rank up... At least to Full Member rank.

I think the merit system should be designed in such a way that you get Likes for your comments and a particular number of likes will equal to a certain number of merits... say 10Likes = 1Merit.
By so doing, everyone stays happy and the forum stays active.
And thus, some people will get 1000 merits in a month.
People can create thousand of account and like his/her own posts. So, the purpose of merit will go in vain again.
Current merit system is really a good one. Just put some efforts in order to having knowledge, not for having merits. Will get merit automatically.

I think the system is very good, but it depends on the individual who runs the system well, sometimes there is a decent but not got a reward, but there are also posts that do not deserve a reward, so go back to the account owner.
so the new rules will encourage account owners to further improve the quality of posting, if you want to get more merit.

I agree with everything. But I think there are some things to upgrade or modify. First of all, I think we should give subordinate members the right to get one Merit per day at 0 Merit by default, so that they can give them useful posts. Of course, to get rid of the malicious one, you have to make 1 Merit disappear after a day (ie your Merit is initialized).
Instead, it would be a good idea to increase the number of Merit conditions in the condition of raising the member rating.
