But then similarly, it is only a question of time before someone transfers all your money out of your online checking account. Which can also be frozen, the funds confiscated, their availability limited, or their value discombobulated by non-market forces.

Aslong as bank is solvent that is ok It would seem that you must search far and wide to find a bank that is truly solvent these days, however.

I won't buy a hardware wallet until I'm satisfied the hardware designers have earned their pay.
That means using custom circuits that minimize the need for turing-complete components and formal proofs of correctness.
Until then, I don't see them as being appreciably better than my air gaped Armory offline laptop.
While you might have a point about the price of the Trezor, I'm more of the mind to get these types of much needed open source projects out sooner than later so that the community can start hacking away to improve them. The Trezor is pretty darn good.

Aslong as bank is solvent that is ok huh? if someone moves your money out of your haxored bank account, good luck getting the bank to put it back. also, i'd say that it is a good idea to distribute one's BTC across different, well-vetted storage solutions.

Uh, the bank WOULD do that. In fact, if you have a check stolen ("irreversible payment") and someone steals it and cashes it, the bank can reverse it months later. People seem to not understand that the central banking system runs everything, and any monetary payment through a bank (NOT wire, though wire can also be reversed) is reversible.

The bank must put back the money its codb for them.. Why else would we give them our money to feel cool? Again unless its unsolvent..

Actually, gold is just gold. Its just been worshiped as the best proxy for exchanging things the longest. But make no mistake, the idea of putting "faith" in gold is no different than putting "faith" in something like bitcoin. It's an idea competing for followers. Nothing more, nothing less. How many people believe in it, embrace it, write books about it, develop industry and education around it and develop a full working economy around it is what takes it from an idea to global proxy of exchange.

Faith isn't the best word. You don't need faith to use them because you have faith In the science behind them and the experts that certify them.

I never saw gold and Bitcoin as being competitors. At least when viewed from a personal perspective. They complement one another. They have some very key elements in common with one another (chiefly, and absence of counter-party risk) but in other ways they are fairly different. Obviously Bitcoin is much newer and less well understood. Evolutionary life-cycle forces make Bitcoin much more risky and volatile. That is fine. More than fine, actually, and there is certainly a place for such a thing in my portfolio. I am delighted that such an item exists and exhibits the counter-party risk profile which is especially important to me.
