ShapeShift started to use mixin and had to stop due to problems.

Coming soon there will be a service that allows BTC -> XMR transfers supporting mixins 3+ by default and payment IDs.

Would it be difficult to make, for example, buy ppl running xmr.to? Now xmr.to does xmr->btc, but the reverse service with strong take on privacy and anonymity, could also be useful I think.

about zerocash. This is what can be found on the website

Quote
How does Zerocash work?

Zerocash extends the protocol and software underlying Bitcoin by adding new, privacy-preserving payments. In doing so it forms a new protocol that, while using some of the same technology and software as Bitcoin, is distinct from it. This new protocol has both anonymous coins, dubbed zerocoins, and non-anonymous ones, which, for purposes of disambiguation, we call basecoins. In contrast to Bitcoin's transactions, payment transactions using the Zerocash protocol do not contain any public information about the payment's origin, destination, or amount; instead, the correctness of the transaction is demonstrated via the use of a zero-knowledge proof. Users can convert from basecoins to zerocoins, send zerocoins to other users, and split or merge zerocoins they own in any way that preserves the total value. Users may also convert zerocoins back into basecoins, though in principle this is not necessary: all transactions can be made in terms of zerocoins.

There are some issues with this protocol

1) fungibility: by introducing basecoins, payment processors, exchnages, governments etc can force you to use these basecoins. When you use the zerocoins, you are flagged by default. Basically there is no difference when you use the ConfidentialTransactions-Sidechain or coinjoin.
2) zerocoin transactions will probably be larger, so people will try to avoid paying the fees by making as little zerocoin transactions as possible
3) due to the fact that eventually only people who want to hide a crime will use the zerocoins, it will be possible that when you get coins out, there is a possibility to link those coins to coins that were put into the zerocoin-pool. So it's tricky... Be aware of this or you'll use your anonimity.

compare this to XMR:
1) when mixin 0 isn't possible anymore (soonTM) all transaction outputs (except the minted coins) are mixed by default. So you can't be forced not to use mixing.
2) because all tractions will have a minimum mixin, you can't avoid paying the fees. Paranoid people pay more for higher mixin.
3) everybody uses mixin, so it's impossible to detect money flows on the network

I do not agree with the bolded.. It's the same argument we use for why xmr or other privacy tools are important.. Why do you claim only criminals want to use zerocoin?

I just bought some. Think will rebound to its proper price of 200-220K within the next 36 hours and stabilize there until the end of the year. Any speculation on the dip? It was certainly notable.

From action in the lending market it very much looks like a large amount of short selling, as noted earlier on this thread. That might be manipulative (trying to force margin calls on leveraged longs) or it could be people overreacting to the ZeroCash stuff, or something else.

Thanks for this info. I am not full time on this just now, so this may be off. Anyway, I don't believe any ZeroCash has any effect. My previous unglamorous explanation was miners, but they don't need to short in order to cash out   Wink

The market looked weak and ready to break down. Somebody forced the invisible hand. This might prove a good move if 180k becomes a resistance, but was a lousy move if we bounce back.

Having been immersed with the long term stuff lately, it just looks funny this little game.

^^^Kind of agree, I'll always take a look at XMR and it's been consistent. A quasi-dump flash dump looks orchestrated where (at lease on Polo) all other markets suddenly when into the and XMR just too off. Calling in the shorts might be it as well. In any event, I'll see if my guy was right, not wagering too much into it.

Somebody got some cheap XMR, not sure how they pulled it off - Monero is in good shape relative to its most direct competitors. Agree on above .002 soon.

Suggestion for accepting monero for tutanota has been made:
https://tutanota.uservoice.com/forums/237921-general/suggestions/9968298-accept-monero-xmr-for-donations

Please support it, if you want.

28 votes and counting.

150 votes already.
Hopefully we can get to 200 :-)

162 votes now

I also asked the Boolberry community to help vote for Monero!

Tutanota has already responded!!!!

Still vote for us if you have not done so already

This is what happens when we work together as a group. Sounds like they just want to make sure that many of us use Tutanota (we do) before they accept Monero. I understand the desire to stay anon but maybe we should send them some emails from our Tutanota accounts just to prove we use and like their encrypted email service.

Hello Monero users and a warm welcome! Smiley We are happy about your interest in our privacy-focused encrypted mail service. We build our features based on the needs of Tutanota users. May we kindly ask, who of you has already switched to Tutanota as your main email service? If you haven’t yet, you may try it right away: https://app.tutanota.de/#register
Happy encrypting.

Thats at least some good news after watching polo today :-)

I've been tutanota user for a while, and am happy with their email service. Google just announced their new spying feature for gmail users, so its perfect time to look for some email that actually respects your privacy and anonymity.

Any speculation on when will Monero have a useable and bug-free GUI wallet?

Have you tried lightwallet? That one works and is maintained afaik, though unfortunately MoneroX is not and apparently no longer works.

Quote
No exact date, but just a range estimation: weeks, months?

As far as the Monero Core GUI, I would say not a few weeks. We have to finish the 0.9 release process and then a few more items on modularizing the core code (called "libraryize" on the development goals document), and then integrate the GUI.

Update: I've tried yesterday with the old binaries and worked fine. You just have to stick with the old ones and not update to the new one/new database. FWIW, the developer seeks for someone to hand the project over. It's a nice GUI, maybe it's better to integrate this one than building one from scratch.

I suspected a pissed-off NXT/VNL/NAUT/DASH shitcoiner wanted revenge for their scam being exposed, and simply borrowed almost every available XMR to dump short.  We should be thanking them for the CH33P C01NZ.

I do the same thing to DASH once in a while, if its price looks more irrationally exuberant than normal.   Cheesy

The reason is mostly consistent interest for 18 months. There are usually coins with more interest at any given time but they tend to burn out quickly.

Coming soon there will be a service that allows BTC -> XMR transfers supporting mixins 3+ by default and payment IDs.

If also it was developed a tor hidden service it would be good alternative to shape-shift, for the more paranoid ones:-)
