1521  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: How is the target value (PoW) determined? on: July 03, 2018, 05:40:57 AM
I understand that you begin mining a new block, I was simply wondering if miners were racing towards a single solution or if there were multiple possibilities. Very interesting, I hadn't considered that before.

Seems Merkle root was just a term I hadn't known, but I knew the information that constituted it.

I have a clearer picture now.

I just need to do more reading and research it seems like. Even my questions are malformed, and probably impossible to answer; I'm using the wrong terms and don't understand basic concepts.
1522  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: How is the target value (PoW) determined? on: July 03, 2018, 05:07:40 AM
I have to do some research on what a "merkle root" is. I am not asking about difficulty, I am asking about each individual blocks solution. Are there multiple solutions to a block?
1523  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / How is the target value (PoW) determined? on: July 03, 2018, 03:14:47 AM
I'm trying to get a more in-depth understanding of exactly what is happening within our protocol. I've mostly taken it for granted over the years, and lately I've been really attempting to understand what is under the hood. Understanding how mining works has been particularly difficult, but it seems to have boiled down to where does the target value come from? The "answer" to the "question" all of the miners are rushing to "solve", I cannot figure it out. I did attempt to use the search function here, read through the whitepaper again and can't seem to find my answer. I'm assuming it is in the source code, but I'm a bit incapable of scouring through it.

I think it has something to do with combining all of the transaction data (headers?) that is to be included within the block, and then the miner is solving for the data (nonce) that needs to be added to the block (transaction data) in order to create an appropriate sha-256 hash (X # of leading 0's, according to difficulty) to be accepted, is that right? The hash is unique and unpredictable, because of the information being added to a block constantly being generated (in a decentralized manner), through new transactions and timestamps; still right?

Would someone be able to create a block of exclusively transactions and information they have control over and have already generated a nonce for? Effectively solving an entirely self-created block (in advance) that would be accepted by the blockchain and allow you to reap the block reward. Is this prevented by accepting the "longest" valid chain? This may all be wrong, and foolish.

P.S. I know I can easily see the hash of a block, once solved, but is there any way or any record of the "nonce" or answer that lead to the hash?
1524  Other / Meta / Re: Another nullius is rising! on: July 01, 2018, 10:23:57 PM
Nullius hasn't even been around much anymore, have they? They left as quick as they went, at least I haven't seen them around much (not that I've been particularly checking). I believe that account was an experiment by someone renown; conspiracy theory activate!
1525  Other / Meta / Re: Why was my thread moved to "Off-Topic"? on: July 01, 2018, 05:02:12 PM
Which is exactly why I have reported the thread (again), after waiting multiple weeks for something to be done (since originally reporting the thread, and saying nothing) and locked the thread. Then I just opened this thread to ask if there was some reason that it has remained active in the marketplace, in case I was overlooking something. I sense animosity, which is confusing to me. Yes, the shitposter views are irrelevant, but the chances that a moderator hasn't seen it are near impossible.

Tell me you haven't seen the thread, please. Especially with all the scrutiny of Gleb, Bruno et al lately.

Other staff members have replied to the thread. Many prestigious members have merited within it, and replied themselves; this is not a thread that was discretely running under the radar with spammers.

It's been moved, so I wasn't overlooking anything, problem solved, question answered, thread locked.
1526  Other / Meta / Re: Why was my thread moved to "Off-Topic"? on: July 01, 2018, 04:37:32 PM
I will re-open this topic (or a new one) if there is no action taken against or explanation validating Gleb's thread to belonging in the marketplace. I got a response from a staff member, gave me a course of action, so I will see how it plays out.
1527  Economy / Speculation / Re: Time to buy on: July 01, 2018, 04:25:43 PM
Didn't realise you were not only an early adopter, but an early owner of significant amount of coins. Sorry to hear you were convinced to let go of them but am equally glad that you pulled through.

I've been around since the start of 2011 or somewhere around there. I had no clue about this forum back then though, and just had heard inklings about Bitcoin. Read the whitepaper, got extremely interested and started CPU mining. Then, I did get discouraged for quite some time from continuing onward with Bitcoin. I stepped away for a couple of years, discouraged and then came back and price had gotten way out of hand. Every time I would look, there would be a new opportunity with bitcoin. Now I am convinced, I am in it for the long-haul, I am keen on accumulating a significant amount of coins again.

Good to have you with us, and active in this community. Hope we're all still around years from now - regardless of where Bitcoin's price takes us.

Likewise. Fingers crossed that the price continues to make opportunities, even for those of us that have missed the first couple of rounds.
1528  Economy / Lending / Re: [W] loan of BTC 0.032 on: July 01, 2018, 03:32:03 PM
What you are offering as collateral is not something that most people are going to see as "valid". Vod has a pretty good post that is at the top of a stickied thread within this board.

Read here :

What is considered collateral?

Collateral is something that can easily be resold to cover the loan value plus interest should the loaner default on the loan.

- The best collateral is another crypto-currency, such as Ethereum (also written as ETH).  Coins must be moderately traded on multiple exchanges.
- Some digital wares such as domain names can be considered as long as the user cannot recover it.
- Small valuable items that can be shipped though the mail - i.e. gold, silver, iphones, etc.
- Large items, such as a motorcycle or guitar can be used if you live close to the person giving you the loan.  Try localbitcoins.com

What is not considered collateral?

- Merit.  Bitcointalk Merit is not a commodity and is not meant to be traded.  Asking or doing so may get you negative trust (Trade with Extreme Caution!)
- Items they want to sell.  They don't want it back, so they will default.  It's scammy unethical behavior and will lead to negative trust.  Check their recent posts!
- Items not in hand.  Don't trust a user that promises to give you something *when* they default!  Tracking numbers only show something has been mailed - it could be an empty box.
- Future income.  You can prove you'll make xx coins in the next few days, but nothing forces you to send those coins to pay your debt.
- Identification.  So what if they can prove who they are.  Are you going to spend more money and time taking them to court on untested legal grounds?  You'll probably just walk away, like everyone does.  ID is useless.
- Games codes or similar.  To verify the collateral you need to use the code, which destroys the collateral.  Consider this a purchase, not a loan.  (Post in Digital Goods instead)
- Most new alt-coins or alt-coins that trade for satoshis are not good collateral as they can become worthless overnight.
- Most pre-coins/tokens are worthless, or may take significant time to be worth anything.
- Paypal should never be used - they are anti-bitcoin and will rule against you 100% of the time.  Escrow can't even help, as paypal charge backs can come over six months later!
- Most valuable online accounts can easily be recovered by social engineering (the user contacting support to say they were hacked, and regain control of the account)  Examples:  Steam

I would suggest you attempt to sell something or provide valid collateral; not a godaddy account that you can easily recover.
1529  Economy / Speculation / Re: Time to buy on: July 01, 2018, 03:05:11 PM
I remember turning off the miner on my crappy laptop back when it was only mining about .5 BTC per day. That $50 laptop could've made me extremely comfortable, if all I did was leave it doing what it was doing. I just didn't feel like it was "worth it", at the time.

Bitcoin is not a nervous, short-term or frantic game; we are playing for the future.

Give it until around 6-12 months after the next halving so mid 2021 & you’ll talking about probably seeing $50,000 for 1 bitcoin.

Does anybody have a little comparison chart on-hand that shows the price of bitcoin around/during block-halving? I feel like block-halving has consistently been a skyrocketing time for the price of Bitcoin.

The corporate bobos don't do anything unless the magic mirror tells them that it is okay.
1530  Other / Meta / Re: Why was my thread moved to "Off-Topic"? on: July 01, 2018, 02:37:10 PM
I just can't imagine that this has gone under the moderators radar. Do threads only get handled if they are reported? Their thread has been operating since the beginning of March, with thousands of views and over 100 replies.

Plus, I swear I did report it a few weeks ago and nothing was done about it; I might be wrong, but I assumed it would've been moved with the rest of the similar threads.

I had to re-open this, because now I am confused about the rules of the marketplace, yet again. I'm not trying to ruffle any feathers, I just want to understand what is going on.

I have just reported the thread, and I'll let some time pass. Will probably end up locking thread again. Seems like opening a new thread would've removed a lot of valid context, though.

1531  Other / Meta / Re: Why was my thread moved to "Off-Topic"? on: July 01, 2018, 02:05:48 PM
Ask your participants to bookmark your threads and check them every few days. or were you guys trying to increase your own post counts and get paid 0.00075BTC per post while farming merits legitimately?

I would happily continue my sMerit review thread if it were in any manageable section. Off-Topic will allow my thread to receive no positive attention. As I have said, there have been about a dozen replies to my thread since it has been moved and 80% of those replies have been multiple users Copy + Pasting my earlier posts within that same thread.

My campaign doesn't pay out for Politics and Society posts, but I would happily operate my thread from within that board. I just want there to be a full understanding about why it happened, what made it happen and how to move forward in a productive manner without stepping on toes. I can't follow the rules unless I understand them, so your assumptions are pretty pathetic when that's all I'm trying to do. I would still post in the Beginner's and Help section if my campaign chose to not pay those posts. I would happily allow my sMerit Review thread posts to not qualify for payment, but all I ask is that it is in a reasonable section and I would happily maintain and operate the thread equally as I do now.

Just because your entire outlook on this forum is "How many pennies can I scrounge together today?" and "How many jimmies can I rustle?" doesn't mean that anybody shares this pedantically shallow worldview. Even throughout your post, most of it is whining about being kicked out of the campaign and that someone in the staff clearly has it out for you. You're blatantly upset about the money, when you should be more worried about your reputation and how your shady actions are affecting other people. You're self-proclaimed, bigot and beggar; how do you expect to be treated beyond that? You were funnier before it became malicious, digaran.

Locking thread, as I've gotten input from Staff that explains my original question.

Moved it to Games and Rounds as it's essentially just a giveaway. I'm really not sure why we need these threads. If you want to merit posts then give users merit but people shouldn't be creating giveaways for it.

No. Meta is for forum issues and doesn't need clogging up even more with people begging for merit constantly.

If it doesn't involve a bitcoin payment then it doesn't belong in the Marketplace.

This about sums it up.

Re-opening the thread, because now I am confused. Gleb Gamow has been running a thread in the Digital Goods section for quite some time.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3055943.0

This doesn't fit the criteria for something fitting for the marketplace; as far as I can tell. Can someone help me understand why this thread is allowed to continue within the marketplace?
1532  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [WTB] Gold & Silver on: July 01, 2018, 01:54:49 PM
I'm going to lock this thread back up and shoot you a PM, Blazed. Bitcoin price is so low that it makes me wince to even think about it. I'd probably only be interested in a single roll, to get the ball rolling. I'm just a starting collector, don't want to get in too deep and catch myself with less BTC than I'd like.
1533  Other / Meta / Re: DING - ranking up - DOES THE MERIT SYSTEM ACTUALLY WORKS? on: July 01, 2018, 01:50:34 PM
I'm speaking of everyone, including you, digaran. We are a community, what role you play within it is your own choice. What you are speaking of does not exist. You always have an excuse for why everyone else can succeed, except yourself; this is an extremely sad victimhood mentality. Theymos is actively seeking merit sources for Non-English boards, since the beginning of the implementation.
1534  Economy / Speculation / Re: Time to buy on: July 01, 2018, 12:59:51 PM
BillyBobZorton, you know it's funny, because when I was writing up this thread I was thinking back to countless posts of yours that are saying exactly what you are saying here. Needless to say, you were on the mind when I was writing up this thread.

You've gotta start sending me advice via PM, or something. Following you around the forum feels creepy.
1535  Other / Meta / Re: DING - ranking up - DOES THE MERIT SYSTEM ACTUALLY WORKS? on: July 01, 2018, 12:49:39 PM
Proud of you bud. You say that most people will likely not care, but I think it is imperative that we receive testimonials from users such as yourself; users that have come, started at 0 merit and worked their way through the system as it was intended. It enables all of us to get another look, or test-case to see how the merit-system is working and the type of users it is pushing "to the top".

Reading through your posts (quickly), it seems like you genuinely just enjoy your time around here. Posting pictures, making jokes, and just generally having an enjoyable experience. You learn when it is time, lurk and make comments that are fun to read.

Keep it up, we do care, we're a community and we've been here for each other for years.
1536  Economy / Speculation / Time to buy on: July 01, 2018, 12:35:06 PM
Everyone that has just recently hear about Bitcoin at the ATH of $20,000 has been asking me consistently, day after day, "What happened to Bitcoin?", telling me "Prices are down!" and questioning the security of Bitcoin without fully understanding anything about it.

For anyone that actually gets discouraged by this kind of talk, let me just remind you that back in 2012 I had hundreds of BTC and I let everyone around me (family, friends, teachers, etc.) convince me that Bitcoin wasn't going to go anywhere and that I was wasting time. If I had only listened to myself, rather than what everyone else was telling me I would be an extravagant millionaire. So now, my response remainds the same each time I am faced with these concerns.

It is a great time to buy BTC, don't miss another opportunity. I no longer try to explain Bitcoin to people, and simply refer them to the whitepaper; if they are unable or unwilling to read through that, then there is clearly not enough interest to warrant a serious conversation.

Has anybody else regretted their decision to liquidate a large amount of BTC back in the day, been discouraged by those close to you in regards to BTC, or have any thoughts on my million-dollar lesson?
1537  Economy / Digital goods / Re: Amazon refunds on: July 01, 2018, 12:23:58 PM
I would be careful when you are dealing with users like this. There is negative reputation on their account for a reason. Please, do your research on what kind of reputation this user carries around prior to dealing with them. Also, please be aware of the risks involved with this kind of service.

These people take advantage of the kindness of Amazon customer service in order to fraudulently claim a refund on your item. I would be careful, because what you are doing is illegal and can get you in some trouble. Participate at your own risk.
1538  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [ANN] Bitcoin Penny™ SILVER on: July 01, 2018, 12:21:10 PM
You should consider doing a raffle for the very last Silver Roll. I know that I would grab a ticket (or two), and I can't imagine that there would be too many holdouts. The tickets would go rather quickly, and it might be a fun and interesting way to get off that last roll you have on-hand.
1539  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: 17 inch macbook pro on: July 01, 2018, 12:18:22 PM
Are you specifically looking for cash, or do you have any interest in trading for another item? I've been in the market for a budget laptop, for business use and I've mostly been putting off the purchase because I have a couple high-end laptops that just need a new screen or keyboard. I've been too lazy to repair them, so I'm thinking this might be a good lay-over laptop in the meantime.
1540  Economy / Goods / Re: ORIGINAL CRYPTO COIN GEAR! on: July 01, 2018, 12:13:47 PM
I agree with the user above me. I've been working on designing shirts, and trying to get a decent selection going for any interested customers of cryptocurrency apparel. What you have presented though, is simply a self-promotion for whatever project you are working on. There is no reason for anybody to purchase this shirt from you unless they are particularly interested in your project (which I have never heard before). The design is not iconic, it is extremely simple (which isn't bad, necessarily). My suggestion, would be try to appeal to a broader audience, and definitely try to get more relatable designs.
