1061  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon Gen2&3 ASIC users thread on: June 05, 2014, 02:08:14 AM
On a different note, Is the only way to control Avalon3 ... w/ the rpi image(firmware)?
Or is there a cgminer / bfgminer build I can run on my own rpi image?
Thanks

Btw, after testing a bunch of h80i's and the h80i clone from coolmaster I have to say my new favorite cooler is the Cool Master Glacer 240L, its a dual radiator system and has a nice big pump for the cooling head.

What are you able to do on the Hab w/ an H80i? ... clocks / temps?
1063  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: The Habanero Project - Batch 2 Shipping June 9th, $850 on: June 03, 2014, 03:58:51 PM
Since the price dropped, may consider buying one.
Whats the best way to cool these again? I dont got all day to read through entire thread =P
Also, whats average hashrate w/ said good cooling?

Thanks
I am averaging a solid 700 on properly cooled boards. I've tried a couple different coolers. The best performance is on one where I used a CoolerMaster 240L with some upgraded fans. It will do 700GH pretty easy with temps below 90. Still tweaking and will post up more details when I get them dialed in.

If I used a 80i .... what do u think I could expect from it? Does the smaller setup make a ton of cooling performance difference?
The benefit of the bigger radiator is that it's easier to get enough air through it to cool the chips. The double radiator has (all things being equal in fin density) twice the surface area of the single one, so you need less airflow to get the same cooling effect. Not only that, but since you need less airflow for the same cooling but can use twice as many fans they can run much slower. I have a Habanero with a Swiftech H220 (similar to a Glacier 240L with a bit slower pump and much slower (55CFM vs 86CFM) fans) running behind me in my office right now, and while it's only running at 800MHz it is very quiet  and visitors don't even notice it running until they see it as ask what it is. Similar cooling with an H80i would require a much louder fan.

Now, if you can get a good price on an H80i and don't mind the noise you can use a massive fan to get good performance. I don't think that the tradeoff is worth it though, unless you're really space constrained. It's usually only another $20 or less to get the double radiator.

Awesome, thanks for explaining. On that note, you think the performance of H100i would be similar to the glacier 240L?

Can we get some hashrate / power consumption proof #'s ... I saw a group buy a while back where GEN3 products were severely overrated in their specs. As in they used a ton more power & hash speed less than stated.

Also, 114$ shipping / module is quite expensive!!!! Any way to get that lowered?

I have two modules running for about 2 weeks now. Easily working on a Corsair 750w psu @ the 500mhz speed (not sure wall consumption, my meter exploded). Hashrate is a bit lower then advertised when looking at poolside. I get about 530-550gh with both modules @ 500mhz.

Did u order from ehash? how quickly did they arrive? (u in the US?)
Also, whats ur HW% @ that speed? Whats your cgminer rated MHSav? I assume ur modules are the 290GH ones...
How loud are they?
1067  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: May 30, 2014, 07:11:58 PM
Question for yall, if I buy just a avalon3 module .. can I run it on just an ATX psu & rpi as controller?
I dont need the rackmount case right?
Im confused cuz I dont see where the power plugs into he module....

Also, anyone purchase from ehash.com? (avalons supposed direct store)

The single module has the interface you plug the main connector , pcie and EMS from your psu (ATX power supply) to power it. But yeah some kind of power distribution board would be nice to keep things tidy if you have a dozen single modules.

yes

link to the interface https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/File:Avalon2-single-modular-connector-front.jpg

Can anyone confirm the speed & power consumption being close to what they claim? I remember reading on this forum someone bought a bunch of GEN3 avalon stuff and it was like 2/3rd the hashrate at double the power consumption vs what it was rated. I want to try ordering a single module, but not if its that horrible.

Also, is ehash.com reliable / fast shipping?

$1m / day?!?!?! thats absolutely fucking insane! I sure hope thats true...

That shoots the myth of people just hoarding ... painfully in the ass!

Go Bitcoin GO!

This is going to fucking OWN! ... BITCOIN is going to fucking OWN!, well it does already but even more so once companies of this magnitude begin to embrace it! Bitcoin to the masses!!!!!!!!! GO GO GO!

Im excited, cant ya tell?

too high? anything 2% and lower is a gain....
Also, naw, the wire mod allowed me to go from 913 to 925 at same or less HW%

What?
Okay, have it your way Wink

That is .25% ... vardiff calculated =)

So the calculation is (HW * vardiff) / (Diff1A + Diff1R) * 100

Ok but you must be avare of making extra inductance on the board after that.

I barely know anything bout electronics, I just know this type of mod has been attempted on several multi chip ASIC designs in the past. So, wanted to try it on gblade.
Its helped a bit, just not as much as Id hoped =)
So, all in all, w/ the wire mod & bridge mod, Im at 925mhz .25% HW avg across all my blades.

Good job, buddy...

Bridge mod = VMOD1...Correct...?

ZiG

Yeahp, I think =P ... lol, its the one where u close to 2 x 2 solder pads and it brings it up .1v

Why you put that wires there?

If theres a better place.. Id be willing to try =P but dont think there is.

I still have no idea why at all you put that wires on board?

Oh an attempt to minimize voltage drop across the chips.
Cuz theres a .05v difference between VRM area & chips.

@GenTarkin please post pics of the wiremod

@racebyu very thin layer of super glue is how i attached all my heatsinks.

Ill try to do that =) , maybe Ill put on some bigger wire... but 18AWG is gonna be harder to solder on these small contacts, specially since all I have my hands on is stranded 18AWG.

Stranded is BETTER, General... Grin

Ha it is? psh well.. I just tried 18 AWG stranded copper wire, was using 20 AWG solid before.
Voltage went from 1.255 to 1.258 =P ROFL!

I guess, at this point, would have to run many upon many wires ... not worth it =(

update here, I attempted the wire mod from the VRM SMD yellow cap to both the middle(on one blade) and furthest(the rest of my blades) of the 3 ASIC caps(same type of cap) on both +/-

Results arent as great as Id hoped.
The middle one , while working great for the first 2 SMD caps in the ASIC area .. didnt really help the last cap much.
So the last 3 blades, I connected the wires to the last cap, this worked better for all 3.

1.3v for VRM cap - doesnt change of course.
Results:
stock: 1.24-1.235v(first to last) for middle caps
wiremod: 1.255-1.255v(consistent for all 3 now) for middle caps.

So, it helped a bit, HW error dropped a bit at same speed.
What I dont get is why the voltage didnt go up closer to the VRM cap of 1.3v =(

Solder joints look good.
What I used: 20ga copper wire, solid core.
