can someone explain pool difficulty to me?

I have 12963MH/s from my one worker, and I set 9-16gh/s from the pool's dropdown menu and it says difficulty 8

my stratum proxy says also says

"proxy getwork_listener._on_submit # [0ms] Share from 'worker1' accepted, diff 8"

can someone explain what the benefit of this is? vs a difficulty of 1?

how does this effect my payout, how does it help the pool, pros cons etc

Difficulty just means you get bigger chunks to work on, which means you've less network bandwidth in use.

Not sure why you think it will be Invalid were Slush said he modified that block due to an earlier block that was missed.

Pool skipped storing the block #237278, unfortunately the monitoring didn't woke me up at night. To fix it and be as fair as possible, I added the block reward into round 18141 (closed by block #237286) and recalculated block rewards. That's the reason for such high block value of #237286 ...

just quoting where Slush explained why the payout is higher on this block

From the stats page, click on the block number and you will see that it's takes you to blockchain info confirming block is slush's.

Since the bitcoind patch we haven't had any invalids.

[EDIT] whereas if you click on the block number for an invalid, the blockchain info site states - Block Not Found - we haven't seen this since the patch - good job that man

See:
The adjustable difficulty is really for [high hashing devices] because those high-throughput devices would clog the server. By setting a higher difficulty, the machine deals with fewer shares but they are worth n*1 shares in [the pool's] stats.

Heh, google.com gives different results to google.co.uk - go figure.  First hit on .co.uk was the answer using that same search.

Yes google customises results of the searches according to the state and user. I hate this "new" option...

You could use https://startpage.com/ instead. Google results but 'neutral'...

Might be worth getting a UPS - will keep you up for half an hour or so - maybe enough to see you through short outages...
