2181  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: resources on: December 07, 2017, 02:39:01 PM
i am a bitcoin researcher and i want to know what are some security protocols/software which can be used to secure the bitcoin network from selfish mining attack..

You mean a 51% attack?

There's no protection against it ( atleast in the bitcoin protocol), other then that it is a pretty unprofitable thing to do in the long run, as it would probably create alot of panic, causing not only the bitcoin price to go down, but also the value that your mining equipment has, etcetera.

OR, did you actually mean the >25% attack?

There's some good resources here, (https://arxiv.org/pdf/1311.0243v2.pdf) in which various solutions are described, some have been implemented i believe, but most haven't.

Quote
There have been BIPS, Bitcoin Improvement Proposals, to lower the probability of a selfish mining attack such as randomly assigning miners to various branches when a fork occurs – or alternatively providing a threshold limit to which a mining pool can reach. This is the same as Governments trying to halt natural monopolies to allow competition.

~~~
Ethereum/ other upcoming PoS coins do however have some sort of protection against them, I had some good sources but i lost them.  Undecided
Quote
Ability to use economic penalties to make various forms of 51% attacks vastly more expensive to carry out than proof of work - to paraphrase Vlad Zamfir, "it's as though your ASIC farm burned down if you participated in a 51% attack".
2182  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is there a rule how many times to post or comment in bitcointalk in a day...??? on: December 07, 2017, 02:27:12 PM
I will try not to spam anymore. thank you for sharing information
Looking at your post history it might already be too late for that, but, i'm not the one to argue/decide about that.
Anyway, was the block you got on your other account permanent? If so, you shouldn't make another account to try and circumvent that, as that is also against the rules.
Permanent means permanent, you're not allowed to come back.
2183  Economy / Exchanges / Re: how can i upgrade my Bittrex account ?? on: December 06, 2017, 09:00:23 PM
Why not make your new bittrex account and made the same as your pasport if you can be still manage your account and transfer the funds from your bittrex account just transfer it to a new account verified. And only support can help you out with your issue better to wait for their reply and tell the story why you are not put your real full name and tell them for security purposes only and you didn't know that they will ask for passport..
But i feel that it won't work beucase they are always asking for proof.. There are lots of people who are experience of security issue with bittrex
Just like this thread https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2279977.0
Because @OP indeed might not be able to move his/her funds out, depending on what level the account currently is.
Alot of people ( from EU countries aswell, including me) recently got their accounts disabled, and i'm not sure how one would regain access to withdrawing the funds if you can't verify your account.
The "New" Status on Bittrex currently allows for an astonishing withdraw limit of ......... 0$! a day..
2184  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: 51 percent attack on: December 06, 2017, 08:35:18 PM
The concept is abstract.
To better visualize it, watch from 14:06 where they talk about double-spend, then 51% attack.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lx9zgZCMqXE
Thanks! If I understand it right, a successful attacker will have to win (solve the puzzles faster than other nodes) several times in a row and create a longer branch. After that all other nodes will follow the rule of extending the longest chain. Right?
"Other miners", yes, the nodes will automatically update/validate the longest chain ( as long the blocks are valid ).
You wouldn't be able to change the ledgers.
https://learncryptography.com/cryptocurrency/51-attack
Could you please elaborate a little on this? According to your link: "Realistically, an attacker would only be able to modify transactions within the past few blocks." How is that not changing the ledgers?
That's exactly what I don't understand. The ledger is distributed, and yet it could be altered by an attacker. Unless an attacker could hack everyone's computer and replace their ledgers with his dishonest version???
Because it can only choose to not confirm/confirm certain transactions, it CAN'T decide for example that all the coins should be sent to the miner's adress.
I would say that "modifying" is the wrong word, rather changing/excluding certain transactions..
These are some better sources:
I am new here and I would like to know: is that case leading to temporary banning or permanent one? I didn't see anywhere that one-line comments are counted as bad ones, well maybe in the case if their meaning is the same in every post, then it can be so doubtless.
It's not necessarily the fact that they're one-liners, ( although this does contribute imo), but rather that they contribute almost nothing to the discussion.
Things such as i described in my first post, "Thanks", "When airdrop".
And yes, this is probably a permanent ban, by the looks of it. I haven't actually seen a case where someone got a temporary ban, btw.
2186  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: How to access my Bitcoin Cash BCH on: December 06, 2017, 07:02:37 PM
To securely get your BCash, I recommend you to follow this:
1. Create a new BTC Wallet, let's name it {B}.
.........
That sounds like a good idea, why did I not think of that myself.  Embarrassed I still don't think the seed will show imported keys in Electron cash (why else would it have given me that warning) but at least I could try. Thanks!
But it would be a bit of a logistical nightmare. Could I not simply enter the keys into Electron Cash just like I did in Electrum, or is that not possible? I have both my public and private keys.
Yes, you will only need a private key on which you had your bitcoin balance at the moment of the fork, and simply import that into Electron Cash, it should work.
Note that you will only see the bitcoin cash balance of said adress that belongs to the private key ( unless it is a MPK), and that you'll need to import change adresses etcetera manually aswell.
Why would it not work? Have you tried it yet? Private keys are ALL derivated in the same way, so it wouldn't matter if it is created in a wallet X 10 years ago, or in wallet Y 10 minutes ago.
Do make sure you're using the right electron cash, and that you're not running a scam wallet, (check the signatures of your download etc.) Otherwise all of your bitcoin cash AND bitcoin might be lost.
Thanks AdolfinWolf. No, I have not tried it yet. I made some stupid mistakes in the past and almost lost my bitcoin. That is why I want to make sure I don't make a similar mistake again.
The keys were generated with Multibit long ago. When I recently entered the keys into Electrum it gave me the message: Warning, imported keys can not be recovered using the seed!  That gave me the idea that the keys must be generated by, and somehow connected to, Multibit. And when I would enter the seed into Electron Cash, it would not see the imported keys. Does my reasoning make sense?
I could simply try it, if you think nothing bad will happen. I hope you understand why I am being very careful here, I got my bitcoin back and don' t want to jeopardise that again. Wink Is Electron Cash dedicated to Bitcoin Cash only? Can it in no way interfere with my bitcoin BTC?
If the seed was generated in MultiBit, then you need to import your BTC wallet using the seed in MultiBit. There you would get a list of all your addresses. You may then copy the Private keys of all the addresses with balances and use Electron Cash to import in a new wallet to claim your BCH.
If the developers of electron cash have malicious intent then they may get your btc from your private keys because it is NOT the official wallet by Electrum !
So I recommend you to transfer your btc to a new address, just to be on a safer side.
That won't work because the seed derivation method used by Multibit is different then the one Electrum uses. ( Correct me if i'm wrong)
So yes, your reasong does kind of make sense. You will either need to use something like this, https://bitcoin.stackexchange.com/questions/53419/how-do-i-import-a-multibit-hd-wallet-with-seeds-into-electrum, which is a lot of hassle without alot of reasoning, in my opinion.
or simply just import the private keys..
2187  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: How to access my Bitcoin Cash BCH on: December 06, 2017, 04:53:14 PM
With the help of some members on this forum I was able to retrieve my bitcoins, simply by entering the keys manually in Electrum. I can now send and receive bitcoins. I cashed in some of it and will keep using Electrum as a kind of savings account.
While I was entering the keys in Electrum I got the warning that imported keys could not be recovered using the seed.
After the fork of August 1 I also have a nice amount of BitcoinCash BCH. Is it possible to use a program like Jaxx or Electron Cash on another computer so I can use it for daily transactions? I don' t want to make a stupid mistake and lose all my bitcoin in the process.
I found a video on Youtube explaining how you could use the seed of Electrum and import it into Electron Cash to claim your BCH. But in my case that will not work: the key was not generated by Electrum but by Multibit years ago.
Any ideas/suggestions on how to solve this problem? I would appreciate it very much. Maybe there is another way I can access my BCH.
Why would it not work? Have you tried it yet? Private keys are ALL derivated in the same way, so it wouldn't matter if it is created in a wallet X 10 years ago, or in wallet Y 10 minutes ago.
Do make sure you're using the right electron cash, and that you're not running a scam wallet, (check the signatures of your download etc.) Otherwise all of your bitcoin cash AND bitcoin might be lost.
2188  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin and Bitcoin forks on: December 06, 2017, 04:33:56 PM
Hello,
I'm a bit confused about the whole Bitcoin hard forks and up coming forks.
As i understand it Bitcoin got Segwit but few supports it, why? This was big news and what i thought was going to make Bitcoin better/faster. Sadly Bitcoin is the same as before all the forks. Lightning network and other updates can be implanted to Bitcoin but that is not available right now, so why not start with using Segwit?
I thought we were going to have 3 hard forks. Bitcoin Cash, Bitcoin Gold and Segwit 2x. I recently heard of Bitcoin Diamond, Bitcoin God. Anyone can create a coin but can anyone also give Bitcoin holder "free money"?
The reason that the segwit2X fork got called off was simply because there was no dev team that could really make segwit2X work, or wanted to put time in it, and ontop of that a lack of general consensus/ community behind it. ( Something that bitcoin cash does kind of have)
This explains it quite nicely https://bravenewcoin.com/news/segwit2x-hard-fork-abandoned-what-happened-and-why/
2189  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: serious hardware issue efffecting my BTC wallet and retrieving my seg coins!! on: December 06, 2017, 03:21:11 PM
greets people,  here it is in a nutshell
I have a btc core wallet 64x and it needs updating via warning msg as its from 2015.
wallet is 137 weeks behind sync with chain,  HERES THE ISSUE:
the machine my wallet is on is suffering a integrated into motherboard gpu chip overheat thermal shutdown issue. it is faulty and causing thermal shutdowns as it overheats before my wallet will sync the last 137 weeks.
what I want to know is how or if I can get my seg coins btc cash, gold and I think now diamond also if I move my btc off bad box and then sync the bad wallet....
while trying to sync my doge wallet thermal shutdown lost my coins while sync.
do my coins need to stay on this wallet with this key do full sync before I can get my other coins?
if I move them to a hardware or other btc wallet will it still alot me my coin match?  it seems I need to try and pray for luck my wallet syncs before my hardware overheats due to the bad gpu...  I hope I explained clear.  I hate to even think of losing all my btc over a bad gpu...if I didn't need to get my matched new cash and gold coins it would be a non issue  how should I proceed
thanks in advance Dave
If you had the bitcoins there at the time the snapshot for said for was recorded, you simply need to export your private key out of your bitcoin core wallet, and put it into a software wallet such as electrumcash ( if you want to redeem bitcoincash for example)
There's dozens of guides on how to get your private key out of bitcoin core, so simply google that, or open the console in bitcoin core and do:
Code:
walletpassphrase "your walletpassphrase here" 600
dumpprivkey [your Bitcoin address here]
NOTE You only need the private keys of the adresses that had bitcoin at the time the fork occured.
Make sure you import the private key into the real wallet, always check the signatures.
2190  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Bitfinex latency on: December 06, 2017, 02:01:41 PM
Hi
does somebody as well have latency by using Bitfinex?
Doesnt matter if i try to open a chart nor my wallet. Sometimes its loading not the full page (parts of the website like the chart) or it takes really long.
I heard that at the moment a lot of people rushing the crpyto markets. maybe thats why.
They should upgrade their server maybe.
Nope, it's smooth as silk for me. It might be your own internet connection. Depending on where you're from and what your speed/bandwith is, could hugely impact on how certain sites are loaded.
Try running http://www.speedtest.net/, and see what your own ping actually is, it might be the reason.
2191  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Priv Key is being used in multiple places/wallet on: December 06, 2017, 01:43:14 PM
Is there anyway to know if your private key is being used in multiple wallets/platforms?
For example, if I have your priv key and imported that into my wallet, will you be able to know about it? unless I make a transaction of course.
No, i believe you won't. Since i could have your private key in an offline wallet aswell, until i sign a message or make a rawtransaction with it, you should/could not know if it is compromised or not.
Some desktop/web wallets might automatically make contact with a node, but that still shouldn't reveal you using private key X, as far as im aware. ( Unless you sign a transaction ofcourse.)
Regards,
First of all, excuse me if it is not the right way to get in touch.
I have a problem with an account which has banned me and I really do not know why, I have no idea what I could do wrong.
The fact is that I tried to contact me via E-mail but I did not get an answer and a week ago. I do not know if it's because of the language since English is not good for me and I use a translator to communicate.
If you would be so kind to see my case or tell me what I can do to recover my account I would appreciate it.
The banned account is the following: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=1143028
The username: Roliaz
Thank you very much in advance, greetings.
Your account was probably banned due to the piss-poor quality of posts it has.
90% of your posts consists of one liners either thanking someone for something they posted, or asking a developer if there will be an airdrop.
Both of these things are absolutely useless, ( you can find out most of these things with a simple google search  Roll Eyes), and contribute to nothing but your own post quality, which is why moderators ban these accounts.
2193  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: whether i can add my own altcoin on Coinomi wallet? Easy? on: December 05, 2017, 05:41:38 PM
Any cost any good tutorials?
I don't think that's up to you to determine, and i don't think that it is possible to do yourself, you will need coinomi to add it for you, unless you ofcourse want to hardcode your altcoin into your client-sided coinomi wallet, which seems like a hassle, and will only effect you, not the rest of the userbase of coinomi.
However, you can however manually add certain tokens of the ETH network, READ = https://coinomi.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/29000009779-how-can-i-add-a-token-that-is-not-in-your-list-of-200-natively-supported-tokens-
2194  Other / Meta / Bitcointalk TOS? on: December 05, 2017, 03:34:32 PM
Does bitcointalk have a TOS? If so, where? I don't recall agreeing to one while signing up/registering with this account, but i may have forgotten about it.
I can't find anything through google or bitcointalk itself either.
This thread, https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2526274.0, raised some questions for me, as to whether or not bitcointalk is legally binded aswell to remove my data, and if this was specified in the TOS for example.
Would be curious to know.
I use my bitcointalk account from my device. But my friend can use his bitcointalk account from my device??
You and your "friend" share a computer?  Roll Eyes
Anyway, this shouldn't be a problem, unless you're going to join a signature campaign / bounty campaign, since the managers might not find your story credible enough.
Bitcointalk.org does not prohibit the use of multiple accounts from one home/device/person, but it is highly frowned upon by some users of the forum, which is understandable ( signature spamming, cluttering up the forum with useless posts, account sellings, scams....)
Which basically means you can't get banned for the solely reason of having multiple accounts, but you could get negatively trusted.
2197  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Help! 2,9 bitcoin lost, no fee transaction on: December 05, 2017, 01:14:14 PM
Anyhow, bitcoins don't disappear, they have to go somewhere. If the transaction didn't confirm, and stopped being broadcast, it should have been returned to the original adress it was send from.
We imported the key in Electrum but the transaction or BTC is not there Sad only the first 'test' transaction is there.
Is there any other way to track the transaction so we can see what happened with it?
Thank you!
Do you still control your old address, check it
We did by importing the key in Electrum or i'm wrong?  only the 'test' transaction is found, the bigger transaction is lost.
Thanks for your time guys! If someone finds a solution i'll be happy to pay a tip.. Sorry for being such a noob..
Which key exactly did you import into electrum? The one where all the bitcoin was stored?
LoyceV mentioned that your bitcoin might have gone to a change adress, have you tried importing the private key of that adress?
2198  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Help! 2,9 bitcoin lost, no fee transaction on: December 04, 2017, 09:06:39 PM
My colleague and i had 3 bitcoins on an old wallet, we wanted to send them to a safer wallet last friday as soon as possible because his wallet was not up to date... so this is what happened:
- we tried 0,001 , and it worked, the transaction could be seen immediately on my other bitcoin wallet and got confirmed in 20 minutes.
- we tried -2.9775, my colleague accidentally didn't add a fee, he says it was not possible anymore to add a fee.  the transaction was never seen on my wallet, it was seen on blockexplorer as unconfirmed
- 3 days later the transaction is not to be found anymore on blockexplorer, or our accounts.
- my colleague his wallet is not sync so cannot acces his wallet, he need to leave his computer on for 30 days, almost impossible on his old computer, he says he never made a private key
- please help Sad
You're really not giving enouh data. What wallet are you using? What adresses were used, for the unconfirmed transactions?
Anyhow, bitcoins don't disappear, they have to go somewhere. If the transaction didn't confirm, and stopped being broadcast, it should have been returned to the original adress it was send from.
Also, every adress has a private key, so he does have a private key.
I'm assuming here that you guys were using bitcoin core, you'll need to EXPORT the private key which holds the 3 bitcoin, and import that into a wallet such as electrum.
To see which adress holds the bitcoins, try running
Code:
listaddressgroupings
Code:
walletpassphrase "your walletpassphrase here" 600
dumpprivkey [your Bitcoin address here]
This code is used to dump the private key.
Then simply download electrum from official sources and import the key. Voila, your balance should be there.
How to get into the console,
Quote
1. launch your bitcoin client as usual
2. click on 'help' in the menu bar (top right)
3. click on 'debug window'
4. select the 'console' tab
2199  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How long does it take to be a jr. Member? on: December 04, 2017, 08:21:03 PM
Hi,
I know that 30 posts are needed to be a jr member, but what is the weekly activity-limit?  Can i uberhaupt achieve this status in 1 week?
No. You will need to post in 3 different periods. ( Each period is 14 days) to gain 42 potential activity. Then you will need to make another 27 posts to achieve the Jr. Member status (Since you already made 3).
Code:
time = number of two-week periods in which you've posted since your registration
activity = min(time * 14, posts)
(your time is* =1)
Or simply post once a day, since that would gain the same result. 14 activity over 14 days = 1 activity per day.
So atleast 4 weeks, and then depending on when you registered, it could take an additional 2 weeks..
2200  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Can someone open my wallet by seeing the address on: December 04, 2017, 05:12:03 PM
For me yes, it is possible to open it because every wallet is vulnerable to being hacked or lost but the safest wallet is one that you control the private key.
Not really, unused adresses do not yet have a public key associated with them, ( in most cases atleast), leaving you with both the private and public key to brute force to get into the wallet, ( which is virtually impossible, since you don't have a starting point Y to start the bruteforce from.
Note that even with the public key it still would cost an absurd amount to crack the private key, but it would/could theorethically be possible.
