1761  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: newbie question - bitcoin chess on: March 01, 2018, 08:16:57 PM
hey all,
i was wondering if someone can recommend a site where you VS someone else in chess for a bitcoin wager? would like to know if theres a well trusted one?
I also doubt these sites exist.

Not necessarily because of the crypto limititations/implementations, but rather because it is extremely easy to cheat.

You can emulate your game with a computer/bot that calculates the best moves in seconds. There's no way you can win from that as a human, and thus would you always make money. When there's money at stake i'm pretty sure most people would use that to their advantage.
1762  Other / Meta / Re: A radical idea to partially clean up sig spamming. on: March 01, 2018, 04:52:12 PM
I have an even more radical idea,

Simply disable everyone's signatures if they're of such great annoyance to you, (or if you're easily seduced by what people are offering through them).

Why would/should the administrators (which in this case comes down to theymos) scan EVERYONE's signature just to make sure some dumbass doesn't buy a product through a user's signature that turns out to be a scam? Where did everyone's common sense go?

The forum currently allows the posting of HYIP sites, there's even a dedicated board for it. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=207.0, and what i'm trying to say with that is; who's to determine what's a scam, and what is not?

One could argue that the product i'm advertising is used for money-laundering, while others could argue that it is a great tool to enhance your privacy (me!). What stance should the forum take? This will ultimately lead to the forum being biased towards certain products/services, which is something i personally really wouldn't want to see.
1763  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How to create a segwit wallet on: March 01, 2018, 03:24:39 PM
Hi am a  newbie, can anybody tell me how to create a segwit wallet because I see all the  members in the campaigns talk about it.

You can simply download the newest version of Electrum, and instead of generating a "standard" wallet, you generate a segwit wallet.

To check if you've done so correctly, go to your receiving adresses, and if they start with BC1, you're good to go.
1764  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What is SegWit? on: March 01, 2018, 02:14:11 PM
I am a Newbie and need your help as I want to know what Segwit is?
How do I get a Segwit address.
What do I need to do?

Segwit is basically a way of sending bitcoins while using less space then "normal" transactions, by replacing/removing (mostly) signature data, thus making them cheaper.

Quote
How do I get a Segwit address.

You can download Electrum, and once launched it will prompt you to either create a "Standard" or "Segwit" wallet, choose segwit, and voila, there you have it.

Other then generating the wallet, nothing.
1765  Economy / Digital goods / Re: I have 26 merits!!!! Buy it if you want!!!!! on: March 01, 2018, 01:52:34 PM
Well, he's got 250 merits. Must have done something really useful to the forum
or may be he got it in this very same method.

Not really. He was a Sr. Member when the merit system got introduced, and received 250 as "starting amount", like any other Sr Member.

Lowest bid is BTC.005.
Wasted senior account for .005 btc, so sad on your side after having a hard time to rank up on that level. Now I allowing you to give those merit to me as a free give away. lol. Anyway, hoping that you learn on this mistake and don't be greedy in money. Love on money is the root of all evils. No hurt feelings folks!

He was already red-tagged for account sales & spamming of signature campaigns back in 2017, See his Trust, so i doubt he cared much about his account in the first place with the current state it was in.

So how does this actually work, when I reach 240 activity and my merit is short do I make a post and ask members to provide me merit to move up to Snr Member or do I just hope and pray someone gives me 150 merits which is next to impossible to receive from users? Lets be honest this merit system is just like the DT0 where Theymos is in control and there is nothing you can do to get on it but to be friends with the guy, I wish to see only 1 person who went from Full Member to Snr Member or from Snr Member to Hero or from Hero to Legendary ever since this Merit system started, which I highly doubt has happened.

There's already a good amount of users who have earned enough merit to become Hero member, or Sr. Member. See https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;stats=topusersat
1766  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Hello, How Do Junior Members Upload Images? on: March 01, 2018, 01:16:56 PM
I had earlier removed the two images that refuse two show but they are back on my post now.

I see what the problem is now. You are trying to link images that are hosted locally on your PC.

http://file:///storage/emulated/0/Download/tokyo-3131978_1920.jpg is not a website or something bitcointalk can fetch data from.

You'll need to upload your image to something like Imgur, and then use that link instead of http://file:///

You did use the tags correctly, so no issue there.
1767  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Exchange fees for transferring coins on: March 01, 2018, 12:53:39 PM
Yes, they will charge fees for both trading to another currency (crypto or fiat) and withdrawing regardless of the destination.
Thank you for your answer.
I have a small selection of altcoins/tokens in my portfolio on different exchanges but I want to store all of them in one place from what i have read I shouldn't keep them on exchanges as they are not regulated and not 100%safe. What would you advice?

Depending on the altcoins you're holding, you could look into a multi-coin wallet like Exodus which supports over a dozen altcoins. If you still have altcoins that aren't supported by them, you could either use the wallet they recommend you to use, or look into something like Coinomi which supports over 64+ (!) altcoins.

Jaxx.io might also be an option, but i believe that they had security issues in the past.
1768  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Hello, How Do Junior Members Upload Images? on: March 01, 2018, 12:37:00 PM
Good day, Folks.
I just became a junior member but I don't know how to post images. Please help.

You simply use the following command with a direct link to a .jpg image. Like this, https://bitcointalk.org/useravatars/avatar_877396.jpg

Code:
 [ img ] [ /img ]
, however it might have been disabled for Jr members due to abuse, in which case you will need to buy the Copper Membership package, which can be found here, https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=credit;promote

Hello.
When I followed the direction above, the message didn't appear. Instead. I got a return message that stated: Bitcointalk.org image proxy invalid image.

Could you link me the post in which it said that you posted an invalid image ( or invalid link to an image), it could either be you messing up, or it could be that using [{img}] is simply disabled for both Newbies &&  Jr. Members, although i always thought it was only restricted for newbies..

Here it is: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2944450.msg30240657#msg30240657
I've quoted your post and scanned it for "img" tags but i couldn't find any.

Are you sure you added an image to your post? It really doesn't seem to be the case..
Also, you were able to quote my picture just fine, so you were probably doing something wrong on your side.

1770  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Sending Eth to ICO from MEW on: February 28, 2018, 10:17:26 PM
I have a question. I want to participate in an ICO. But this is on the ICO's site:

Keep in mind that in sending (ETH), you will need to designate a Gaslimit with no less than 70,000 Gwei

Normally, an ico says how much the gas limit has to be. But they use the word "Gwei" which normally refers to the price between 1 and 99 (see MEW). So what do i do?

Or they mean 70.000 has to be the total fee, but if i think of the formula [gas limit x gas price], a total of 70.000 would require a way too low combination of price and gas limit.
And if they mean 70 Gwei (see the comma) as price only, then it would also not make sense either because i thought you are not allowed to send to smart contracts with over a price of 50 Gwei or it would fail?

I'm not entirely sure, but upon reading some more about it, it is probably the total fee, or 70.000 ontop of the original transaction ( so that you have enough gas to execute the contract and receive your tokens..)

There's an article about it here, https://coinsutra.com/ethereum-gas-limit-gas-price-fees/ which covers it pretty well, although i'm not 100% sure this also applies to the specific ICO you are going to by from ( What's the name of it btw?)

Quote
i thought you are not allowed to send to smart contracts with over a price of 50 Gwei or it would fail?

Why would you be punished for using too much gas ( using higher fees?) that doesn't make any sense..?
1771  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What is the most secure cryptocurrency? on: February 28, 2018, 09:13:48 PM
A lot of people are saying deeponion. I agree but since the source code is closed and the developers are all anonymous. How much can we really veryify about this Deeponion?

That is the scary part.

A lot of people are saying it because they are being paid by them to do so. This thread has rather become a shillfest. As you said, you can't verify anything about them and i believe it is just a matter of time before something bad happens to them..

Also, Secure =/= private/anonymous. I don't get why everyone seems to think so.. Monero doesn't get any more secure by hiding how much your adress owns in comparison to Ethereum, where they do display your balance..
1772  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Diversity or Limit how many you use? on: February 28, 2018, 07:37:15 PM
Hi guys, I'm new to this and I'm just trying to get some research to make sure I don't end up tossing money away then, decide to jump off a building with a cinder block aorund my neck. So I understand a diverse portfolio is great, but how diverse should it be? 1-3? Or should I just indulge in my comfort limits? Any advice would help. Thanks in advance!

I personally would take what I can afford to loose per month or two and put this into one coin. Next time the same. So go on to 3 to 5 coins. Maybe start with 3. Then cycle through your coins with your invest. Read the news, check whats happen in the crypto world, stay calm if your assets going down.

But always do your own research what are you investing in! You wanne be investor and not gambler, right?

I always find it funny that people use the word "Investing", with cryptoCurrencies while in reality you are speculating on a currency. You buying the coin won't give you any influence over the people that mad it, (like the case is with normal stocks.)

Most of the coins other then Ethereum && maybe LTC and a few others ( although LTC currently with the low fees is also pretty useless) are currently (imo) very hyped up and nothing more then a whitepaper, the marketcap of these coins is extremely inflated and i feel like it's just a matter of time before some of these coins blow up ( in a negative way.).

1773  Other / Meta / Re: Deserved receipt of Merit on: February 28, 2018, 06:03:16 PM
Today I was looking at the forum for answers to questions of interest to me and drew attention to the fact that the forum is heavily polluted by various unnecessary posts and water in them instead of useful information.-snip-

Like yours...? You wrote an entire story when you could also use two sentences, not only that, you also formatted it in the worst possible way... Thanks for hurting my eyes...

Quote
I met many frankly silly posts that were marked +Merit and I do not understand why and who notes them, at the same time I met quite a lot of competently written, and most importantly useful posts that were not marked +Merit at all!!!

Some examples? If you think the person who gave merit is abusing it, you can report it and he/she will probably get tagged for merit trading or ( banned?)..

Quote
It would be great if there was an opportunity to put 👎 under those posts that pollute the forum

Not really. It would probably get abused by spammers/scammers/etc, plus it would probably be used to agree/disagree with people, which is pretty useless.

Quote
! if you have written a good post and think that it is noteworthy, publish a link to it here, I hope that it will notice. And also I want to address those who have sMerit, at least periodically come here and mark +Merit posts, which in your opinion deserve it! Help me collect good posts, and the people who wrote them earn earned +Merit. Only together we can make this forum better! Thank you all for your attention!
There's already tons of topics in which exactly this happens...

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2825523.msg28944688#msg28944688 < as example..

1775  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Looking for a job on: February 28, 2018, 03:30:17 PM
Are there a topic on BT with job offers ?
Unfortunately there's none (afaik).

If no, are there any sites, where I would have capability to find job in cryptosphere?
Yes, you can try the following (I can't vouch for any of the following platforms [never tried them]):

Actually, there is. Check out this thread here, https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2165225.0 and see if there's anything you might be interested in. There's tons of projects looking for ICO managers etc.

Things like this might be interesting for you, although i'm not sure how legit the projects/job offers are that have been listed there, so take care.
1776  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Help with ANN Topic on: February 28, 2018, 03:19:02 PM
Well in fact we have a topic, but without any graphics it looks poor https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2930270

And we have good comments about our ICO but no possibility to design good topic, at least for now while account is young.

Graphics/pictures have been disabled for newbies ( and Jr accounts??) due to it being abused. You can however buy a Copper rank, which lets you post them. I believe this rank was introduced solely for this purpose  ( Adding images in ANN threads etc.)

(Because that was/is the issue right? Not being able to post images?)

Buy it directly from here -> https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=credit;promote

More information about the rank can be found here > https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2385104.msg24371150#msg24371150
1777  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: What is normal running state of ./bitcoind ? on: February 28, 2018, 01:53:52 PM
I know if run ./bitcoin-qt, wallet GUI program started.

Then if everything is normal and fine, what will happen when run ./bitcoind?

Bitcoind is simply a so-called "headless" version of bitcoin-QT, so instead of a GUI (like Bitcoin-QT has) it has a command-line interface. So booting up bitcoind will give you a command prompt instead of the GUI bitcoin-qt provides.

I believe that there are no differences ( in terms of what commands are available, configurations etc) other then the GUI being different.  (or missing)

Some more information about the two can be found here > https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Running_Bitcoin
1778  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Source revision, Assertion `globalChainParams' failed on: February 28, 2018, 12:35:43 PM
Then instead of using the checkproofofwork function, copy out its code into your while loop and refer to the variables directly from within the ChainParams. This is simple programming debugging and troubleshooting, you should not need hand holding and someone to tell you exactly what to do.
Even after doing that, still debug.log says ReadBlockFromDisk: Errors in block header at CBlockDiskPos(nFile=0, nPos=8)...

Seems there is no hope...

Note that i am not an expert in coding and debugging, but this error
Code:
CBlockDiskPos(nFile=0, nPos=8)...
might have something to do with you having an invalid hash/nounce..

See this as reference; https://bitcoin.stackexchange.com/questions/60299/altcoin-creation-from-bitcoin-readblockfromdisk-errors-in-block-header-at-cbloc

But it seems that you've already read that answer, assuming you're leegod on SE?
1779  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Why wallet hacked on: February 27, 2018, 10:38:00 PM
Try writing down your private key twice on a notepad and storing them in separate locations. Don't save it as a file on your computer in case it is hacked or put in on a public forum. An external wallet maybe worth looking into.

What would that matter? if someone has your private key from location X, they would simply be able to take all your coins, it doesn't matter where you store them, and how many times. ( Unless ofcourse you use a multisignature wallet)

Using private key is not safe?I used private key but I was hacked all my assets are gone..what should I do?
I think private key is safe enough to protect a wallet from being hacked. Maybe you someone did steal your private key without you knowing it. Those coins that were stolen, consider it gone because there is nothing you could doi about it. Make a new a wallet and keep it safe next time.
The private key does absolutely nothing to protect your wallet from being hacked... *sigh* ^_^
1780  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Help! Electrum wallet file is corrupted. on: February 27, 2018, 06:54:42 PM
So what exactly happens when you try to open your wallet file in Electrum with your password, does it just closes itself, or?

Are you able to make & open new electrum wallets on your computer just fine? Also, what version was your electrum when you created the wallet? Take a look at this topic where someone posted a guide for fixing a corrupt wallet ( or how to derive the seed from it).  I doubt it will work though! https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=327119.0

(Make sure to backup your corrupted wallet file before trying, in case you mess something up)
