They earned it by making customers whole after the hack. Their U.I. is well designed, albeit unusably slow on most modern platforms (tablets and phones). I just wish they would acknowledge receipt of that deposit I made a year ago...
It is a sad sad thing. I have also lost pretty much all the XMR I ever held. I don't know where any of it is any more. I hate to imagine how much money has been potentially lost to untraceability. . And to the bottom the the sea. Salt water is so bad on hard drives. If you believe XMR will gain some serious value in the future (distant or near), then the rational move is buy it back. The good thing is, XMR is pretty much -50 % from last year's trading area when it seemed to tighten towards 0.004-0.0045 area, bitcoin is also -50 % so in total fiat value it is down roughly 75 %. It is like buying dollars on quarters.

I thought my paper wallet was safe but I had no idea what happens to thermal printing when left in the car on a hot summer day. That's why XMR is going up now. So many lost coins!

Seems like there is a business opportunity to create some hardware that are more secure in cases of the most common damages.

My backups are on two identical cds (yes, compact disks) in pdf form created with Moo's offline wallet generator. I also have the seed written down with 3 words randomly added in that only I'd know don't belong.

I've never been a fan of Fib Retracements and personally don't even think TA works all that well for crypto but... it sure does look nice at the mome. https://i.imgur.com/ei09pkB.pngLogarithmic chart.

The chart indeed looks beautiful. It is easier to sell XMR for noobs when they see a chart which is rising in a nice manner.
There is 100 % increase in the number of coins ahead of us before the minimum block reward kicks in. A year ago the same number was hundreds of percents. That is the message XMR can potentially be a good hedge against inflation and therefore might be a good choice for storing larger amounts of wealth into XMR. I am personally expecting some larger buyers (large buyer= wants to pour hundreds of thousands of dollars into XMR) to be attracted by the community and the coin. That gives a nice prospect for Monero's future valuation. My estimate is, Monero has no one who owns large portion of their wealth in XMR (people have set artificial boundaries on their Monero holdings) so there is pretty much quite nice room for price and marketcap growth coming as people will realize XMR is not that risky investment anymore and they are ready to re-adjust their portfolio to less risky Monero and that pushes the price always to the next orbit.

We are a bit OT but I wouldn't trust the CD's for very long- they deteriorate over time - you must recopy every year. oh, and I wouldn't tell anybody how many random words you used ( or that you did it at all) to anybody

I probably wouldn't trust the literal 100-year marketing claim but maybe for more than most other digital media? I'm still going to say paper is best though. Just don't make the same mistake I did and use a thermal printer. Hand write the seed words.

Were they worth more than the $600 I lost using localbitcoins to deposit to my Paypal account a couple years ago? Painful lesson but my loss was tolerable and worth charging to experience.

Indeed, I also lost all of the "cheap" xmr I accumulated during the late 2014 era. Little pieces of paper have a way of disappearing, and I really need to learn to stop reformatting my hard drives whenever I want to build a new rig. Or labeling them.

Well I must say that literally the dumbest error would be to avoid duplicating my feat to not mine Monero in the first place, although it afforded me the luxury of not losing my keys[1] but pardon me if damning by faint praise is no consolation. [1] Locking those inside my car seems to be a habitual rite of passage for me. Hey since it seems everyone irretrievably lost their keys, no problem if we ignore Monero now since there won't be any further transactions. Btw, I've heard they employ lie detector tests and medically induced hypnosis before proceeding to the water boarding for stubborn cases. Shouldn't we in all due honesty adjust the coinmarketcap to 0 as well? P.S. this post is a test of your logic skills.

CD-R and DVD-R are a disappointment for long term storage. Imho paper wallets are meant to stay on.... well... paper.

Since we're all fessing up to stupidity over storage, I lost most of my cheaply bought Monero - more than 90% in fact in a bizarre gardening accident.
I can't bear to think about it. Trying to swing trade back up, but it's a hell of a write off.
