1701  Other / Meta / Let's finally remove Locked and Self Mod topics from the Marketplace on: May 24, 2019, 10:14:45 AM
I know this has been kicked around a few times, but I couldn't find a solid discussion around it and reasoning behind keeping this feature available to all. I've only seen a handful of threads that don't appear to be scammy by nature using either of these features in the Marketplace. When I say locked topics I'm only referring to being able to toggle the feature for bumping. I'm not even proposing an outright elimination of the feature, this could be a feature some users could be whitelisted for by Admins or Marketplace Mods. A good example of a whitelistable account might be brokers maintaining a large amount of items in 1 thread.

Maybe I'm missing something but it seems the bad far outweighs the good by keeping these features available for everyone, considering it's the go to move for Newbie accounts looking for a quick score. The few users who feel their topic will be spammed or they may be harassed can make use of the "report to moderator" function. The rest of the threads will be open to have reasonable questions asked and discussion to take place on this forum, considering this is where the Ads are placed. It will still depend on members to ask the right questions but I think there are plenty out there that patrol and will do just that.

There have in the past been concerns as well around these features empowering and protecting the potential scams themselves. They can spread false information about escrows gear and anything they really want with little recourse available. There is no way apart from leaving feedback and hoping people believe it or are not convinced it's frivolous through whatever means of contact these people use. I get it that it's still up to people to do their due diligence and they should catch these tricks, but unfortunately a lot of us learn the hard way. It's an unfortunate by product of the protections certain banks and cards have afforded us.

With the recent steps to display a warning based on DT trust to logged out users. I'm hoping we can take further steps to improve the Marketplace through transparency, functionality and safety.
1702  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Block Halving cout down on: May 24, 2019, 06:17:21 AM
Its not going to be proportional, even if it may look like that temporarily at first. You would be wise to start reducing your mining operation if you are already large (diversify your portfolio, invest elsewhere, or go solar/wind instead of pure asic mining purchases).
If bitcoin is 8k at the time of halving, don't expect it to go 16k next day, something like 12k or less would be about right.
That is without taking into consideration even more efficient miners rising that diff up. In the aftermath price might be even go down and kick a bunch of miners out (again). It is also wise to not spend everything, keep reserves. Don't live on the margin like most miners do, if you are unable to survive without a PPS pool administering your profits, then you are in trouble.
I think you are accurate to think the most profits will be made right before the halving, then assume some slump afterwards before things become attractive again, but not as much as the previous halving.
I might have agreed with you about reducing my operation instead of maxing it out if we were maybe 3 months away. Taking into account Diff adjustments and everything else I stand to have my little farm paid for well before the halving. This way I can weather the storm and see what happens. Not to mention I run free in the Winter for anything I can get into my house ~ 60 Amps. That was the part about being able to do something forever.
I definitely don't expect anything to happen over night but I'm expecting a weird 6 weeks with a lot of unknowns at play. I con't mine PPS and don't expect that to change anytime soon unless they choose to shutdown for some reason; which is unlikely. Diversifying is always good advice, even that though carries the same risks, I have a small spread of crypto and plan on keeping it that way. Either way we'll see what happens, I'm more interested in seeing the overall event and effect than worried about future plans.
1703  Other / Meta / Re: A long rambling post about trust on: May 24, 2019, 03:05:08 AM
[Full disclosure I only have the default set]
Anyway.... I have to ask how much it matters by itself without doing your own research.
I would consider making your own list you seem to have a good grasp of how the system should work for you.
If you do consider making your list, I would add both those names based on your cases for when you trust their opinion. The trust score is not some be all end all, I trust this person on everything every time. It just means that for the most part feedback they leave, is something you see the value in. Arguably they would mostly leave feedback in the areas you trust their opinion so it's valuable for you to see it. The same would go for excluding members who you see very little value in their feedback or disagree with how they choose to leave it.
Quote
So yes, the trust system is important. But, in the state it's in now you really can't rely on it without doing your own research.
Do we need to make this more obvious for newer people?
It really should only act as a bridge for people as they join the community to give the some insight into the risks at play or safer avenues to venture on. People over time should be able to draw conclusions like yourself above about who they trust and when, moving towards their own custom list.
Quote
Dave's logic behind making this feedback information more public and with more information attached to it. --> Anything we can do to help remove scammers is good. Anything we can do to make scammers lives more difficult is good. If a new person does not know and does not look to find out that's on them.  If they don't know and we do but don't tell them or make it difficult to find out, that's on us.
Counter argument --> We are not your mom. It's not our job.
I guess we make our trust lists for ourselves. We leave feedback as a reference for ourselves and to provide others with some insight. Some may not care about preventing someone else from getting scammed, and that's fine for them. There are plenty of people here who do, and ideally that will help shape the DT that newbies will see when they arrive. I don't really see it as a job maybe some do, I just leave feedback where I think it is appropriate as I come across situations.

1704  Other / Meta / Re: Arranging Superfluous Speech Holistically Over Lengthy Episodes on: May 24, 2019, 01:43:16 AM
Not going to lie, it hurt my brain a little to read your post. I do agree completely though, if my common understanding of English hasn't failed me.
I felt for a while that the "Signal to Noise" ratio was trending in a positive direction, but it seems there is now more reputation smearing and back and forth petty arguments/grudges cluttering boards. Maybe it was always like this and the noise used to drown it out. I guess with this though the best thing to so is report away and see what moderators think about it.
1705  Economy / Reputation / Re: A bot started posting? on: May 24, 2019, 01:06:26 AM
Given that it's not some Brand New account I doubt it's a bot. They likely just copy pasted and posted on multiple boards. Bots do arrive quite often and do essentially the same thing, with shittier looking posts. I'd still report those threads as duplicates as you can't just spam the same post across multiple boards.

Here's a broker's post that had bulk 570's.
And another offering of theirs:

1707  Other / Meta / Re: Blocked account on: May 23, 2019, 09:05:06 AM
Did your "friend" receive an email stating they've been banned? If so there would have been a reason stated. The same email will tell them how to go about appealing it.

That's the likely answer as I don't see anything about password changes.
1708  Economy / Reputation / Re: How should this be interpreted? on: May 23, 2019, 08:25:33 AM
Depending on how they counted their week - again they are very vague. These 2 would have earned stakes for their twitter activities

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5052876.msg49069102#msg49069102

Then depending on time zones DarkStar_ and Bl4nkcode below that on the 6th could have also potentially counted. Even if only one of those 2 got one of their twitter actions right that still means someone had a valid "stake" in for the draw.

I believe they wanted their feedback reviewed for advertising on the Forum. They were denied last round

I personally don't like to tag someone if I'm not part of the transaction; especially if the aggrieved party chooses not to. In this case I think it was them working in their own self interests to try and get the negative trust removed and not at all with trying to rectify the wrongdoing on their part.

1709  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Looking to start up a mid-large scale mining operation in the US on: May 23, 2019, 06:00:24 AM
Speak of the devil, lol. Phil is who I was referring to with the Solar setups, seeing as you were open to moving. On the note of Brokers and cheap older gen gear, here's a guy. I was going through his offerings and found this.
Announcement: 130+ MW of "Behind the Meter" Land & Power Available for Mining
Might be something you are into. You can also see the offerings he has for gear in that thread or ask him if you do reach out.
1710  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: Im Looking For 300 Antminer S9/T9/T9+ in EUROPA on: May 23, 2019, 05:56:37 AM
Here's a Broker who has leads on a lot of gear. I found these two listings in their offerings that might work for you. You would have to discuss with him if Personal pick-up would be acceptable. Good Luck.

3000 qty Antminer S9 for Sale in Romania

600 qty Antminer S9 (13.5 Th/s) for Sale in Portugal
1711  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Current List of Competitive Hardware - April 2019 on: May 23, 2019, 05:39:24 AM
Thanks for the update, they've joined Halong and been moved to the final stop on the list. Anyone who has ordered gear recently can also fill in on what the USD price was I will try and update that in the next week. M20 will probably be the next gear update, they should be arriving to people in 10-14 days ~ better late than never.

Just a reminder that this thread serves a running reference to the Hardware Available. This is not a general discussion thread, use the links provided in the OP for each miner, or wherever is suitable.
1712  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Block Halving cout down on: May 23, 2019, 04:58:03 AM
I see the halving differently. I mine, and used the last 3 months to essentially max out what I can do from home. I wanted to get as much gear up and hashing as I could before the rewards are reduced. I've never been through a halving before and really don't know what to expect. I am planning on trying to accumulate as best I can but there's always a need to cash out at least a portion of my rewards. This will either be a catalyst for a proportional price increase, or drastically change the Mining landscape. Either way I will have some cold months where I can mine forever.
1713  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [GUIDES] on Bitcointalk. Index thread (until there is a dedicated subforum?) on: May 23, 2019, 04:20:35 AM
No it took me a while to find LoyceV's thread, seeing theymos's made me want to search for it. Hope that clears things up.
My fault as I was searching through Meta and the pages of Ban appeals, then through their Created topics which tend to load a little slow for me tonight.
1714  Other / Meta / Re: [Ban Appeal] bill gator on: May 23, 2019, 04:15:42 AM
How do you feel about the idea of statutes of limitations on plagiarism cases? I think punishing somebody for a one-off offense done years ago (talking like 3 or more years ago) is a bit too stringent and the current plagiabot running around is a bit out of hand, leading to the banning of people for a mistake committed in 2014. Maybe the query or the rule should be tightened a bit. Just my opinion.

Glad to see theymos's action here. It does show that there are still people looking over cases and reviewing the circumstances; much to the dismay of most of the complaints out there. The rest is for the "Trust" network to sort out for itself.

I don't agree with easing up on what the Bot is searching. If someone made the one mistake years ago, then they are receiving leniency, we've seen it for so many people now. If it's happening now instead of 4 or 5 years ago, probably better for them; as it's not a permaban. Had it happened then they would be Ban evading and there is no case for them to complain if they get caught. Anyone receiving these bans should just serve the time and wear the signature with gratitude, for their second chance.

Edit: I said this elsewhere and sums up my feelings fairly well.

~snip~
For me personally this situation shows poor judgement on their part, but needs to be reviewed based on each case. If they have anything less than this reaction:

I have no problem with my “I’m an idiot and fckd up” banner. I’d have accepted much worse.  I deserve it, and so does anyone else who had or will be issued one. We all make mistakes in life, it’s about acknowledging them, getting back up, correcting your mistakes, moving on, and doing better.

1715  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [GUIDES] on Bitcointalk. Index thread (until there is a dedicated subforum?) on: May 23, 2019, 03:17:48 AM
Here's a nice guide theymos created [Guide] Decent mixing methods. Also the perfect opportunity to give this thread a much needed bump, took me a while to find it.
1716  Other / Off-topic / Re: Looking to be mertied? Come here on: May 23, 2019, 02:06:42 AM
~snip~
I only checked the first one but the OP is only looking for posts that haven't been merited yet. You may want to look through your other good posts and try again.

Nice initiative KY, not sure if it will stay here in Meta there used to be a lot of these floating around, most got moved to off-topic or some other board. Best of luck spreading out them smerit (spendable maybe sendable) I believe you've actually earned 369 and have shared the wealth a little.

If you don't find enough people dropping quality here, just randomly start reading threads and don't be shy with the merit button. I tend to go out and read through all sorts of random threads in an attempt to spend them as fast as I can earn them. Doesn't always work as I find some later but forget about them by the time I earn more.
1717  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Looking to start up a mid-large scale mining operation in the US on: May 23, 2019, 01:53:57 AM
I haven't fired up a large facility but your biggest problem at the moment is going to be the Tariffs in the US, they are absolutely killing you guys on hardware prices right now. I believe it's something like 25% maybe 27.6 I'm not positive, but it's why a lot of people have held off on upgrading their equipment. Figuring out what and how you'll buy it may be more of a numbers game after you've talked to the power company, you may be limited on what they will provide your site. You might also decide to consider other countries like Canada, some provinces offer very appealing rates and have large farms already in operation. This may not be ideal though I'm not sure how hard it is to relocate internationally.

In regards to everything else , I lean towards finding the fastest way to get up and running even if this is only at a fraction of your end goal. So Ideally you will find a building up for sale considering you have the capital and don't need to borrow. Otherwise you are operating at the whims of the "Owner" - I've seen one hosting facility get burned this way. You may want to narrow down the areas you feel you can get a decent power deal, then search for property in that region until you find a place that has it all. I'll check around and link back but I have seen a few people posting "farms" for sale in the marketplace but those offers may have expired. Another option you may want to consider is getting into the Crypto/Solar arrays. There is a member here who has been expanding at a great pace by doing this as they are in a state with very good Solar rebate programs. Good luck.
1718  Economy / Reputation / Re: How should this be interpreted? on: May 23, 2019, 01:33:04 AM
I actually read through this thread about a week ago while following feedback references. Without to much reading of it your tag made sense. I agree with QS on the lack of professionalism they brought to this giveaway promotion mostly due to transparency. Even if this is a language issue, it is the promoters responsibility to ensure they are accurately communicating in all languages they choose to operate.

When I read the additional requirement for week 2 my interpretation is that it only applies to the stakes regarding "forum account entries" - This means that to earn the stakes from placing the Sig ad and Banner ad for each forum you need to have made 10 posts on that forum. This is separate from any other stakes earned from telegram and twitter. (Which is where you would have been due an entry)

For me this would fall into the realm of Negative feedback for a few reasons -
  • I feel they did not honor the second round of the giveaway whether this is poor communication or what. They should have rewritten the entire giveaway requirements for round 2 to be clear.
  • From what I can tell they were a newer Mixer and Account promoting it - Not hard to giveaway 1 phone to make everything seem great then start scamming hard ( Not an accusation just a consideration)
  • Lack of communication afterwards

I'm very fluid with my feedback and would work with them to find a resolution in everyone's interest, at most going to neutral and explaining past problems with their giveaways. I'm not sure how many people did the twitter or telegram campaign but perhaps hosting the giveaway with those who qualified based on our understanding of their stipulations.

Better late than never, but I wanted to post a few photos of the coin. Glad to have it, and the kids love the glow in the dark. Really nice piece of work, tough to get a really good glow in the dark pic.

1720  Other / Meta / Re: Any managers lost good posters due recent mass ban? on: May 21, 2019, 06:32:07 PM
If this is true and those currently using the accounts are going to be held to account for the plagiarism of the farmer, we might as well ban account sales, even if you can’t prevent all of them. I don’t think it is reasonable to expect someone to check for plagiarism when they buy an account, or even know how to effectively check. This way if someone is banned for plagiarism the farmer did, there wouldn’t be an injustice because they should have been banned for using the purchased account anyway (or the purchased account should have been locked).

I don’t think it would be difficult to generally tell if a person in good standing had purchased their account after the time of plagiarism.

While I'm not opposed to account sales being banned. This line of thought might become peoples next attempt at a get out of Jail free card. Even if they were banned moving forward it wouldn't change where we are now in dealing with these past infractions. They bough the account and if they weren't going to do their part to ensure the reputation they were buying was clean they can deal with the consequences of it. See it can go both ways, they bough the account and rank for the benefits, they can deal with the negatives as well, I don't see an injustice here. Buyer beware and whatnot.

On that note, seeing as these appeals can be made to Moderators, they can admit to their account being a bought account without further repercussions, such as negative feedback depending on when it was purchased. In case they bought it after it became an unacceptable practice, as it's still allowed based on forum guidelines.
