1841  Other / Meta / Re: How do I create one of those picture signatures? on: February 13, 2018, 03:38:08 PM
I see some people have a signature that is hyperlinked to their URL, how do you do this?

I believe http(s):// links will automatically become clickable once you reach a certain membership level, member i think?

It was  JR. Member at first for clickable links but i believe that got removed. ( Member + now.)

You might be able to circumvent some of these rank restrictions by buying the Copper Rank, although i'm not sure if that also works for signatures.. ( Does anyone know?) https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=credit;promote

1842  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What makes one exchange more attractive than another? on: February 10, 2018, 12:44:45 PM
for example we all though bittrex.com was a trusted exchange but a couple of months ago they scammed thousands of their users and robbed them out of millions of dollars worth of bitcoin and altcoins in total.
What happened after that? They still work as usual? I never heard about this before. I know that there are a lot of reviews online, but you can find some bad review for almost every exchange. It's hard for newbie to choose the good exchange.

Nothing really.

I also wouldn't call it robbing -- they simply had to adapt to new KYC laws ( Know-Your-Customer), which means that every customer/user on their site need to have a passport/ID added to their account, if you don't have it, your funds (like mine) are stuck, and only become accessibly after adding said ID.. There's been some outrage but there's still tons of people using them.

I don't think they have added claims that the funds are no longer yours after X days, -- right?
In that case it's not a robbery, especially if they announced the change and gave the old users a few weeks to move their funds elsewhere. If they just suddenly changed the rules I would not use them.

Well yeah, that's the point, it was rather unexpected. I believe they simply on one day froze all the unverified accounts, without any prior notice, see https://steemit.com/bittrex/@penguinpablo/warning-it-seems-bittrex-is-disabling-accounts-for-no-apparent-reason

If you're looking at competing USA exchanges, like poloniex, you can argue that they are indeed handling the same situation wayy better, giving users a lot of time to withdraw funds / upgrade their accounts..

Take a look here, https://www.reddit.com/r/Monero/comments/6qb5xr/help_please_somebody_help_me/, it states that a refund adress isn't necessarily at all in the first place.

I'm guessing that if you add a refund adress which asks for a payment ID you will somehow crash/interrupt their system.

The payment ID enables an automated system to recognize the transaction. Shapeshift will still receive the monero. You'll need to contact their support.

A payment id is optional, however in some cases it is very important otherwise the receiver may not realise you've sent money to them.
Cases such as sending Monero to an exchange, or situations where someone uses one address to receive many payments, a payment id is going to be necessary.
Generally though, unless the person/website specifically requests a payment id, it's not going to be necessary. General usage shouldn't require one.

So, it's indeed mostly exchanges that use these so they can differentiate/identify where the money came from.  ( When there's lots of anon tx's to 1 adress etc.)

I'm guessing that any normal desktop wallet won't have this enabled by default. (?)
1845  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What makes one exchange more attractive than another? on: February 09, 2018, 08:41:58 PM
I see that there are numerous exchanges like gdax and bitfinex, etc. but why should I use one over the other? I get it if one has lower fees but is there something else that would make one attractive?

Is it about the tools they offer? Is it the volume available?

Yes. I'd say that exchanges differentiate in a number of things.. There's tons of reviews available online to read about these things;

- Reliability, things such as having good servers, 2FA, cold storage for funds etc.

- Volume / Liquidity, how much is traded per day on their platform. -- https://coinmarketcap.com/exchanges/volume/24-hour/

- Lower fees/lower transaction cost, so things such as maker/trader fees, outgoing fees when making a transaction etc.

- What stream/"Ideology" do they support, think about the adoptation of segwit et al.

- The amount of coins they offer/what coins they offer.

- How quick they resolve support issues etc..

- Layout  + Tools, you might simply dislike how certain sites look, or miss certain tools such as Fib levels, or whatever.
1846  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: how does it works?!! on: February 09, 2018, 08:39:18 PM
i wanted to participate as a newbie in bounties , but some people say that it is better to stay active on forum for gaining rank and later get offers.
so what should i do?participate or not ? (translating job)

I don't see what the difference would be in waiting until you are a higher member to do a translation bounty? I guess you would seem more trusted, but that's rarely the case anymore, i for one wouldn't necessarily trust a Member over a Jr Member, etc.

It's not like you're going to be a better translator with a higher rank, right?
1847  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Security issue on: February 09, 2018, 05:46:04 PM
The question to those who have long been in the crypto topic. PC protection is an important part of monitoring different ISO and others, even if all the keys are stored on a USB flash drive.
How to secure yourself more than usual? Maybe there are some special antiviruses, or extensions in the browser from phishing and illegal mining.

You need to draw a line between comfort of usage / risk of funds being stolen.

The best thing obviously would be to use a paper wallet/Ledger/trezor, don't use an old USB as they can still get hacked relatively easily/randomly break down ( in comparison with a trezor).

Not sure what you really mean by illegal mining, but i guess you could use something that prevents you from being keylogged. https://www.qfxsoftware.com/

And ofcourse make sure you have good/paid AV software...)
1848  Economy / Economics / Re: The USDT problem on: February 07, 2018, 05:40:55 PM
Tether doesn't add any value to the cryptocurrency world.

It's actually more useful then 90% of all the current cryptos in circulation, it offers a way out, when bitcoin is crashing etc. Like gold kind of is for the "real" petroleum dollar.

I don't think they can store such a value at a bank account, their whole business is shady and hard to explain. Also it was meant to be redeemable, means that you could transform them back to USD, which would cause your USDT to be destroyed, yet it seams no USDT was ever destroyed. Nobody would redeem it? Not even for curiosity? Suspicious, to say the least...

Sorry if I didn't properly explain myself, my point is about BTC markets. Due to this "magic money making machine" the market could be inflated and in the verge of collapse as soon as Tether collapses, a MtGox part 2.0.
Do you think this is a point of concern or the exchanges on "Tether steroids" won't be able to hurt the market?
While i agree with you that their operations are shady, ( I don't get why they won't do something like an audit by a third party). i don't see why a company as big as Bitfinex would risk losing all their users/customers for a couple billion, while their average volume is ~2 billion each day.

Also, something to note is that when they create/print the USDT and sell it ( for 1$ marketprice), it would automatically be backed 1:1  (although that would then be in BTC/other crypto and not $$, which means it could fluctuate alot).. -- right ?

There's an old audit report to be found here - > where there's an estimated backing of around 400 million? https://tether.to/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/Final-Tether-Consulting-Report-9-15-17_Redacted.pdf

do you know what armorydb.exe is? big thanks for replies...  Grin

Armorydb.exe is a/the process name of a wallet called "Armory", which can be found here, https://www.bitcoinarmory.com/

I believe armorydb.exe is the process of updating the blockchain specifically, and that the "normal" process is called ArmoryQT.exe

I see there is now a dedicated topic for reporting users for copy pasting.

I've found this gem a while ago,

Halloween update will be released on or before 10/31 and include a new Hexsylvania location on the world during the event which includes a new spooky biome, along with 8 Halloween Heroes, and new quests with specific rewards.
More ways to get the Heroes and Schematics you want.

Which is from a random fortnite update,

His post was both copied and extremely offtopic. Not sure if this counts for a ban though...
1851  Economy / Services / Re: [1 SLOT] ChipMixer Signature Campaign | 0.00075 BTC/post on: February 04, 2018, 10:05:35 AM
Payments for this week have been sent. You can view the payment transaction here.

1 open slot.
Sir, what is the reason for the open slot?
Take a look at the google spreadsheet, it looks like the user "GreenBits" has been kicked for inactivity ( since he only made 1 post.)

That leaves me wondering if there's actually a minimum amount of posts you should make each week, (which is refuted in the OP actually.)or if this guy was inactive for longer then just this week.
1852  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Repercussion of submitting into a scam airdrop? on: February 03, 2018, 05:00:01 PM
Well, it was bound to happen as I follow airdrops. The form looked good, the "secure" was GREEN and the data on the form seemed authentic. But, it was a scam airdrop requesting ETH donations for bonuses. Money gone, not a lot, but lesson learned.

Question- Can anyone get into my MEW with just my MEW ER20 wallet address? No private key disclosed, of course. Did provide, the usual twitter, telegram profile info. Should I worry about any other potential issues?

You're asking if someone can get into your MyEtherWallet with just your public adress? I wouldn't hope so, because that would mean that anyone that has access to a block explorer could get everyone's funds.  Tongue

If that's the only thing that you gave them, your adress, then there isn't too much to worry about. You might receive some spam email  ( if they're selling their userbase..). If you connected your twitter through an api ( gave them permission to do or see X, you should remove that. )

1853  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: public and private key on: February 03, 2018, 11:13:59 AM
Hello everyone is there any way I can generate my private ken on coinbase?

No. Coinbase doesn't provide customers with access to their private keys, which is the reason you should never use them as your main wallet. No keys = no control over your bitcoin.

1854  Other / Meta / Re: Question - answered. on: February 03, 2018, 09:47:03 AM
Then I leaned something new. I thought that if you don't post in the 2 weeks time span you loose the activity points for that period, but looks like they are accumulated with the posts even if you do not post for a longer period of time.
That's not true... Otherwise every newbie who registered back in 2011/12/13/14/15 would be a potential hero member now...

They are only accumulated as potential activity if you at least posted once in that two week period of time.

Code:
time = number of two-week periods in which you've posted since your registration
activity = min(time * 14, posts)

Here's more or less the formula.
1855  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Is the encoding of bc1 adresses the same as 1../ 3.. adresses? on: February 02, 2018, 09:59:38 PM
As title states, is the checksum for bc1 adresses the same as for 1.. / 3.. adresses? It seems that it isn't supported by sites like these

How can i verify myself manually if a bc1 adress is valid? Is it actually any different?
1856  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: PoW VS PoS on: February 02, 2018, 09:39:00 PM
Proof of work (Pow) vs Proof of Stake (Pos) , which one would you recommend  to earn handsome amount of profit. Please mention if there is any upcoming solid ICO that we can benefit from PoS or PoW.

PoW = Actual mining with hardware

PoS = mining through the amount of the marketcap/circulation you own.

Depending on what machines you have to mine, and what your electricity costs are, one might be better then the other. Note that i have yet to see a really big coin implement something like PoS..
1857  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin telegram group on: February 02, 2018, 02:25:46 PM
Please is there anyone who has the bitcoin telegram link so I can join the chat forum and the official group?

I don't think there's such a thing as a "official" Bitcoin telegram group, nor is there an official "Bitcointalk" telegram group ( as far as i'm aware.)

There are however lots of crypto groups out there, who usually give calls/advice etc. ( Beware that 99% of these are doing it to somehow benefit themselves, shilling/pump&dump etc.).

Take a look here for some good groups, which are related to BTC. https://tgram.io/
1858  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Cannot post? on: February 01, 2018, 09:29:35 PM
Hi,

I've joined bitcointalk for about 3 weeks, but I'm still not able to reply to any post, is this normal?

Thank You for the help.

No. You should be able to post/reply to threads/topics every 360 seconds with the rank you currently have.. Maybe there's something wrong with your browser/loading of pages(unlikely?), or your other account got banned?

Upon registering, did you had to pay a fee ( for units of "evil")? that might have something to do with it, although i'm really not sure.
1859  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How can I secure that my wallet is safe? on: February 01, 2018, 05:32:00 PM
Since I have no deep understanding of the possibilities of storing crypto-currencies I have some questions which I posted already in some other thread. However didn't get any answers so far.
Actually everyone recommends to use hardware wallets, however I have some questions regarding that topic:

1. Where do most people store there less known Altcoins? Since many of the Altcoins are not supported so far by the hardware wallets.

2. How can I be sure that a newly purchased hardware wallet was not corrupted from the manufacturer or a middle man who is selling the wallet?

3. If I use a software wallet, how can I be sure the file is safe to use? Is there a kind of checksum or any other good method for securing the file is safe to use?

4. If I use multiple software wallets on one laptop which I setup for wallets only and one wallet would be corrupted, isn't there a big chance to loose everything?

Thanks for your help!

original post:   Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Tips on how to have the most secure and safe wallet

1. Probably on the exchange that they bought them on ^_^, otherwise i'd look for wallets the dev himself gave out, or use something like Exodus, https://www.exodus.io/

2. Not sure with the trezor, but the Nano simply factory resets after trying the wrong pin a couple times.
https://support.ledgerwallet.com/hc/en-us/articles/115005161645-How-to-erase-my-wallet-or-reset-my-Nano-S-

3. You can check / validate the hashes, yes.

4. I'm not too sure.
1860  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How do I get a wallet? on: February 01, 2018, 05:25:37 PM
Is there any difference between coinbase, myetherwallet and blockchain? Which one is better in your opinion?

Yes. there is a huge difference. Coinbase is a service really, not a wallet. You never really have control over your bitcoin if you store them there, since they own the private keys.

MEW is pretty solid, but only for ethereum. Although i believe the official ethereum client has way more features then them.

Blockchain.info is a webwallet, they have no access to your keys, but neither do you (unless you export them, which is almost impossible. ( or derive the seed ofcours, which can be buggy.)
It also misses a lot of functionality if you compare it to something like https://electrum.org/#home
